Willem Greve wins the Rolex Grand Prix inside The Flemish Masters.
Tumblr media
The Rolex Grand Prix, the show’s height group, was the culmination of the Dutch Masters, the second Rolex Grand Slam of the calendar month. The Major, the last of the four shows in the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping to honor the initiative’s ten-year anniversary, did so with a flattering festival on Saturday night looking back over the shows from the previous decade.
Fans were eager to see if Richard Vogel, the latest Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping life competitor, could win back-to-back Majors in his quest for the sport’s best prize, a task that would require a dramatic field of riders, including the latest European, World, and Olympic champions, who were all hoping to win this prestigious Rolex Grand Prix.
Martin Fuchs, the following to go, was the first to learn Louis Konickx’s extremely built program, and he was the winner of the CPKC ‘ International’ Grand Prix, presented by Rolex at the CSIO Spruce Meadows’ Masters ‘ Tournament. The most of any animal in the group, Leone Jei, is his support, who has jumped eight clears in the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Majors.
World No. 2 is the next addition to the main area. The flying Frenchman Julien Epaillard was another to pass the 14 mix program, keeping his hopes of becoming the first European horse to win a Major dead. 1 Henrik von Eckermann and King Edward ensured there would be a jump-off with a perfectly judged distinct round. Seven riders from seven different countries were in contention for the jump-off, including German rider Marcus Ehning and the” Dutch Horse of the Year” Harrie Smolders, who lit the residence crowd on fire. Only two more combinations of the remaining riders made it to the second circular, with some of the competition’s favorites like Steve Guerdat and Richard Vogel unwilling to join the special list of riders.
Fuchs set the pace with a distinct in 35.11 hours, but von Eckermann and King Edward immediately took the lead when they crossed the line in 33.74 seconds, making it clear that they were the leading pair in the world. Glows produced a very soft round, but the grief came when he was 0.92 seconds slower. The crowd roared back. Sweden’s victory appeared to be on the line, but French rider Willem Greve and his sea stallion, Highway TN N. O. P., with their perfectly vetted round, won in the final round. only 0.04 hours ahead of the other. Greve thus won his second Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Major as well as a first for the Netherlands, making him the life candidate ahead of the CHIO Aachen in July.
The French horse stated:” I have to squeeze myself – it is amazing. Thoughts may adequately express how I feel. For his bravery and culture, I am so appreciative of my horse. The background here is amazing, and it honors me to be included in the list of winners. It means a lot to me to get in front of my home crowd. To win at The French Masters is a dream come true because I’ve been a part of it since I was a young child.

second rotation (i.e., last third of the finals field):
Israel: Daniel Bluman on Ladriano Z. withdrew/scratched.
Belgium: Jerome Guery on Quel Homme de Hus. two rails down. no froth or gape that i noticed - i think he’s in a more-or-less regular bridle.
Sweden: on Catch Me Not S. looks somewhat hyperflexed before the round. some gape and froth. one rail down, but inside the time.
Germany: Phillipp Weishaupt on Zineday. drop noseband, gape. head tossing between some fences. i only jsut noticed how little Zineday is - he reminds me of a Welsh pony in some ways.
Netherlands: Harrie Smolders on Uricas V/D Kattevennen. going in a Micklem. froth, a touch of gape. just barely over the time. lofty jumps.
Ireland: Cian O’Connor on Maurice. boy’s got bucks. two throatlatches on the bridle. bit of froth and gape. extra little kick over some of these jumps. one second over, knocked two rails.
USA: McLain Ward on Ilex. kind of a tight frame before the round starts. buck! oh i really thought they were gonna knock the wall. nice save. elevator bit with converter reins. separate martingale and breastplate. Ilex put a lot of air between him and the jumps.
France: Julien Epaillard on Dubai du Cedre. mare! also in a hackamore. he’s really holding her back to the jumps - she just wants to go. clear and in time. her ears came forward when the crowd started applauding it was pretty cute.
UK: Scott Brash on Jefferson. love his kinda lopsided blaze. he’s got a narrower face than i expected; almost a baby face. blinkers. drop noseband. little bit of gape to some fences. one second over the time.
team jumping final!
Mexico pulled out bc of a veterinary issue - good for them! this course is really cool to look at, both technically and aesthetically. there’s a combination of liverpools into a rollback that i know must be a hard ride but is just so fascinating, and i’m a little in love with the pink vertical (i know it's supposed to be about fashion, but i'm getting cherry blossom vibes). the course designers put a lot of work in and it totally paid off.
Israel: Robin Muhr on Galaxy HM. less arguing about speed this time, but still gaping when asked to slow down.
Sweden: Henrik von Eckermann on King Edward. nose-fly-net thing, and his noseband looks really wide, which is what threw me before. apparently he also goes barefoot (except rn. he’s got glue-ons for the Games) which is very cool. much better round, way more forward.
France: Simon Delestre on I Amelusina R 51. thin noseband, and what looks like a shadow roll underneath. never seen that before. they’re drifting right on most of these jumps. some gape. converter reins. clear, just outside the time.
Ireland: Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz. this gelding is so pretty. blinkers. still can’t figure out this bridle - it looks like a bitted bridle and a hackamore combined. two throat latches and converter reins. fussy with his mouth and i think a little froth.
Netherlands: Maikel van der Vlueten on Beauville Z. some head tossing/shaking between jumps, but no froth or gape. one second over the time, and one rail down. otherwise a nicely handled round.
Belgium: Gilles Thomas on Ermitage Kalone. nose fly net. sliced that second jump. two rails down; they’re inside the time. Some froth.
UK: Ben Maher on Dallas Vegas Batilly. mare! nose fly net. froth. little bit of head tossing/shaking in the turns. a second and a half over.
USA: Laura Kraut on Baloutinue. more pets for the boy before they start. the breastplate and martingale still look separate. under time, but one rail down. the closeup of them before the round shows very few stress lines on Baloutinue’s face - i’m impressed.
Germany: Christian Kukuk on Checker 47. happy buck (shows off the dapples on his legs too). some of these turns are Tight. little gape, little froth. also under the time, but one rail down.
Israel: Ashlee Bond on Donatello 141. Donatello is Ready To Go. fast fast round - she’s a quick rider, and he’s spicy today. froth. something like five rails down; all that speed did not work in their favor.
Sweden: Rolf-Goran Bengtsson on Zuccero HV. i think his coat is the coolest in the entire field. elevator bit with two sets of reins and froth. lots of air from this guy. i think he’s in a Micklem or adjacent bridle.
France: Olivier Perreau on Dorai d’Aiguilly. mare! elevator bit with converter reins; some head tossing and gape. this girl knows her job: they’re the first pair to go clear and in time!
Ireland: Daniel Coyle on Legacy. mare! such a pretty bay. hyperflexion before the round, froth. these mares are getting shit done - this is the second pair to go clear in the time.
Netherlands: Kim Emmen on Imagine. he’s only 11. okay. i thought he was older bc of how grayed out he is. some froth and gape/champing. elevator bit with two sets of reins/pelham. clear in the time. kind of love his plain bridle.
Belgium: Wilm Vermeir on IQ van Het Steentje. almost-fly mask. i can’t tell if this is a bitted bridle or a hackamore; two throat latches. a buck at the end just because.
UK: Harry Charles on Romeo 88. i’m sorry, the rider's name is the most british to ever british. still don’t like this combined/stacked noseband situation. two sets of reins, either a pelham or elevator bit. froth and gape. clear and in time.
USA: Karl Cook on Caracole de la Roque. mare! and an opinionated one at that (so, the best kind). worst topline of the lot - obvious atrophy in her neck/withers. goes in a hackamore - it’s awesome to see bitless in the Olympics. clear and in time - fastest round so far, actually.
Germany: Richard Vogel on United Touch S. regular old bridle. love to see it. one rail down, but in time. otherwise boring round (that’s a good thing).

‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands – March 10, 2024 – The Dutch Masters CSI 5*, the first Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Major of the calendar year – culminated this afternoon with the show’s pinnacle class, the €1,000,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*. The Major, which was the final of the four shows within the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the initiative did so with a fitting ceremony on Saturday evening looking back over the highlights from the past decade.
The energy in the Brabanthallen was electric as fans waited with bated breath to see if the current Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping live contender, Richard Vogel (GER), could claim back-to-back Majors in his pursuit of the ultimate prize in the sport – a quest that would not come easy with a sensational field of riders including the current European, World and Olympic Champions all hoping to claim this prestigious Rolex Grand Prix.
Second to go – Rolex Testimonee and winner of the CPKC ‘International’ Grand Prix, presented by Rolex at the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament – Martin Fuchs (SUI) was the first to master Louis Konickx’s exceptionally built course. His mount, Leone Jei, has jumped eight clears in Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Majors, the most of any horse in the class.
The next combination into the main arena, World No.1 Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) and King Edward ensured there would be a jump-off with a perfectly judged clear round, whilst the flying Frenchman Julien Epaillard (FRA), was another to clear the 14 combination course and kept his hopes of the becoming the first French rider to win a Major alive.
At the halfway point, seven riders from seven different nations had secured their place in the jump-off including the ‘Dutch Rider of the Year’, Harrie Smolders (NED) who set the home crowd alight, and German rider Marcus Ehning (GER). Of the remaining riders, only two additional combinations proceeded to the second round with some of the competition’s favourites such as Steve Guerdat (SUI) and the live contender Richard Vogel (GER) unable to join the exclusive list of riders.
Returning in the same order in which they jumped in the first round, it was Fuchs who set the pace with a clear in a time of 35.11 seconds, however, his lead was quickly usurped by Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) and King Edward who showed why they are considered to be the leading combination in the world, when they crossed the line in 33.74 seconds.
The crowd roared to life as Harrie Smolders (NED) produced a super smooth round, but heartbreak came when he was 0.92 seconds slower.
It looked like it would be a Swedish victory, but last to go, Dutch rider Willem Greve (NED) with his bay stallion, Highway TN N.O.P. produced an expertly judged round to beat the World No.1’s time by just 0.04 seconds. Greve therefore not only claimed his first Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Major but also a first for the Netherlands, and become the live contender ahead of the CHIO Aachen in July.
Speaking on his win the Dutch rider stated: “I have to pinch myself – it is unbelievable. Words cannot describe how I am feeling. I am so thankful for my horse for his courage and his mentality. It means so much to me to win in front of my home crowd – the history here is incredible, and it is an honour to add my name to the list of winners. I have been coming to The Dutch Masters since a was a small child, and so to win here is a dream come true.”
Final Results – €1,000,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*
1) Willem Greve (NED) & Highway TN N.O.P. – 0 / 0 – 33.70
2) Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) & King Edward – 0 / 0 – 33.74
3) Harrie Smolders (NED) & Uricas van de Kattevennen – 0 / 0 – 34.66

third rotation:
noticing a red mare trend in this field and i am Here For It.
Venezuela: Luis Fernando Larrazabal on Condara. mare! lovely liver chestnut. came in Ready to Go, and used all of the prep time to get a look at the brighter jumps. girl’s got hops but she doesn’t particularly want to use them - not that i blame her, it’s hot. three rails, one foot in the water. drop noseband.
Spain: Sergio Alvarez Moya on Puma HS. also looking at the bright jumps. all but stopped for the plank wall but they cleared it! three rails down, one time penalty. the commentators were calling this a training round/experience by the end and i’m inclined to agree.
France: Julien Epaillard on Dubai du Cedre. mare! here’s the other mare in a hackamore. came in fast to the double combination but handled it beautifully. Epaillard is really having to work to keep her steady. double clear - six seconds under. spicy mares with plans are kind of my favorites.
Portugal: Duarte Seabra on Dourados 2. another one eyeballing the plank and slanted walls. gape and froth. nice round, two rails. two sets of reins.
Saudi Arabia: Ramzy al Duhami on Untouchable 32. mare! blinkers? she’s fresh and raring to go. froth and gape. double clear. She’s amazing - made it over every jump handily.
Syria: Amre Hamcho on Vagabond des Forets. withdrew
Austria: Max Kuehner on Elektric Blue P. lots of gape between fences. drop noseband. neat round, only one rail.
Japan: Taizo Sugitani on Quincy 194. combined noseband, blinkers. nice wide turn to the plank wall; gave them one of the best approaches i’ve seen so far. two rails down, one time penalty.
Greece: Ioli Mytilineou on L’Artiste de Toxandra. lighter bay with a cool blaze. two sets of reins. not terribly pleased about being asked to collect. three rails down.
USA: McLain Ward on Ilex. nice walk-canter transition. throws a buck in after the second fence. completely unconcerned about the humidity - the one benefit of being based in florida. nice clean round, knocked the last fence.
Argentina: Jose Maria (jr) Larocca on Finn Lente. getting a look at the plank and slanted wall before they start. quick ride, one rail down.
Netherlands: Harrie Smolders on Uricas V/D Kattevennen. micklem adjacent bridle. lovely jump on this guy. storming around the course like no one’s business. double clear.
Belgium: Gregory Wathelet on Bond Jamesbond de Hay. alright yeah i laughed at the name. hackamore? hackamore! he’s fun to watch. double clear (seven or eight seconds under). threw some bucks/crowhops in after the round.
Switzerland: Martin Fuchs on Leone Jei. drop noseband. weird, half-stumbled? step in the triple combination but they made it through. double clear.
UK: Ben Maher on Dallas Vegas Batilly. mare! nose net. hyperflexed before the round starts. gape and froth. completely misjudges the last wall - her hind legs drag right through it. no other penalties. there’s almost ten people putting the wall back together - speed is of the essence, clearly.
Australia: Edwina Tops-Alexander on Fellow Castlefield. red ribbon. rattles both fences in the double combination but doesn’t drop them. nice ride, if a little slow. two rails down.
Ireland: Cian O’Connor on Maurice. oh my god why do you have him cranked back so far (before the round). double clear. throws a buck in after the round.
Poland: Maksymilian Wechta on Chepettano. red ribbon. another wide turn to the plank wall and a nice approach. arguing about speed into the triple combination. under time, but three rails down.
Thailand: Janakabhorn Karunayadhaj on Kinmar Agalux. mare! hell yeah SEAsians. red mare, and she’s spooking at something. blinkers? froth, champing. shadow roll. ducks the double on the first go. racks up a ton of rail penalties, eliminated. for how wild and spooked Kinmar Agalux was, the fact that they kept trying is pretty impressive.
Germany: Phillipp Weishaupt on Zineday. tight slice on fence 3. drop noseband. one rail down, under time.
Estonia: My Relander on Expert. fantastic course up until the first water. Something about it wigs Expert out, and she lets him have a look before electing to retire on course.
Chile: Agustin Covarrusbias on Nelson du Petit Vivier. gape and froth. a little sticky feeling in the first few fences. not the smoothest ride - knocked six poles, racked up a few time penalties.
Brazil: Stephan Barcha on Primavera. mare! love her tiny stripe. She’s looky - the last several have been. maybe the shadows? two sets of reins. girl’s got scope. double clear.
UAE: Omar Abdul Aziz al Marzooqi on Enjoy de la Mure. buck! lots and lots of scope. went clear, just barely (literally half a second) over time.
showjumping individual qualifiers here we go:
Israel: Isabella Russekoff on C Vier 2. Micklem (or adjacent) bridle. pretty lighter bay. he spooks (or ‘spooks’) shortly after the final fence.
Canada: Mario Deslauriers on Emerson. that turn to the ‘bonjour paris’ wall is Tight. in time, only one rail down. Deslauriers has been doing this forever so that really doesn’t surprise me. double reins on an elevator or pelham bit.
Lithuania: Andrius Petrovas on Linkolns. Linkolns decided something about that jump or the course was not worth it and Petrovas retired. good for him!
Mexico: Andres Azcarraga on Contrendros 2. dropped a stride before the water and still cleared it - horses like that are the best. first double clear round! and an extra little buck.
Sweden: Henrik von Eckermann on King Edward. Oh that’s right he goes in a nose fly net thing. King Edward is Going today - “jumping out of his skin” yeah you’re right. definitely saw Eckermann grab mane.
Spain: Ismael Garcia Roque on Tirano. drop noseband. lots and lots of air on Tirano’s part. only one rail down.
France: Olivier Perreau on Dorai d’Aiguilly. mare! some froth i think. this girl is here to Get It Done. knocked a rail on the last fence. elevator-type bit with converter reins.
Saudi Arabia: Abdulrahman Alrajhi on Ventago. ah a kicker. tapped a rail but went clear and in time. froth.
Austria: Gerfried Puck on Naxcel V. okay i’m sure those fly mask things are blinkers but i can’t get a close enough look to confirm. drop noseband. much discussion from this pair - Naxcel has his own plans it seems. elevator-type bit with two sets of reins.
Japan: Eiken Sato on Conthargo-Blue. red ribbon. Disagreements after the water and over the red vertical. drop noseband, elevator-type bit with double reins. retires on course.
USA: Karl Cook on Caracole de la Roque. mare! one of the two mares going in a hackamore. her topline still bothers me. double clear. every time i’ve seen this mare she gets shit done.
Netherlands: Maikel van der Vleuten on Beauville Z. came in a little wiggly to that second jump (we’ve all been there). only one rail down and a 70 second course.
Ireland: Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz. would like a better look at that bridle. they are tearing through the course in style - no rails in 73.35 seconds.
Belgium: Jerome Guery on Quel Homme de Hus. converter reins. one rail down, four seconds under time.
Switzerland: Edouard Schmitz on Gamin Van’t Naastveldhof. quick buck as they get going. two rails down, four seconds under.
UK: Harry Charles on Romeo 88. always interesting to see which horse’s manes get braided for showjumping and which don't (Romeo 88 doesn’t). the double noseband situation bothers me, and also it seems like you could just use a flash. blinkers. double clear. some bucks just for funsies.
Norway: Victoria Gulliksen on Mistral van de Vogelzang. Mistral has things to say about the rein contact - tons of head shaking between fences. froth. double clear.
Australia: Hilary Scott on Milky Way. mare! pretty gray. i don’t think she has a throatlatch. knocked two rails - one in the double combination and one in the triple combination.
Poland: Dawid Kubiak on Flash Blue B. shadow roll and hackmore. blinkers maybe? two rails down.
Denmark: Andreas Schou on Napoli VH Nederassenthof. Schou’s shoulders look a little slumped as they come in - kinda odd, for how much we worry about our posture. maybe i'm seeing things. knocks a rail on the last fence.
Germany: Christian Kukuk on Checker 47. buck. pretty dapples. two rails, i think.
Brazil: Rodrigo Pessoa on Major Tom. i’m not going to make a built-in sponsor joke. or a Space Oddity joke. i’m not. lovely jump. double clear. i think Major Tom is the third? horse i’ve seen with his fly bonnet tied to the noseband so it won’t flap.
UAE: Salim Ahmed al Suwaidi on Foncetti VD Heffinck. froth. Micklem adjacent bridle. lots of praise after the round. four rails down.
Israel: Robin Muhr on Galaxy HM. two rails down. interesting how there are so many dark bays/blacks in dressage but considerably fewer in jumping.
Canada: Erynn Ballard on Nikka VD Bisschop. mare! big bold blaze. entered the ring fairly quietly. extra little kick over the jumps. i like this pair.
