265 - Brideshead Revisited
Tumblr media
We all know that Oscar fawns over costume dramas of literary adaptations -- or so we tell ourselves when forming predictions and one with a whiff of prestige arrives. In 2008, director Julian Jerrold delivered a new adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited with an up-and-coming young cast paired with Dame Emma Thompson as the devoutly religious Lady Marchmain. With Matthew Goode as the social climber Charles Ryder and Ben Whishaw and Hayley Atwell as the siblings he romances, the queer-inflected drama earned modest reviews and box office, with Thompson an outsider Supporting Actress contender through the season.
This episode, Thompson joins our six timers club and we discuss our love for the then-emerging Whishaw. We also look back at Goode's career including the misbegotten Watchmen film, Atwell's career outside of Marvel, and the surprising amount of time that has passed since Thompson's last nomination.
Topics also include Brideshead riff Saltburn, pneumonia terminology, and 2008 queer cinema.

Becoming Jane (2007) dir. Julian Jerrold, D.P. Eigil Bryld
Irony is the bringing together of contradictory truths to make out of the contradiction a new truth with a laugh or a smile, and I must confess that a truth must come with one or the other, or I account it as false and a denial of the very nature of humanity itself.

Steve Hall, who retired from the CIA in 2015 after 30 years of running and managing Russia operations, said that the substance of the lies and alleged false statements documented by Mueller paint a broad picture with serious implications.
“In my view, those lies — what was lied about and under what condition the lies were told — contribute to a counterintelligence pattern that has begun to emerge pointing to senior members of the Trump team being involved with the Russians,” he said.
They lied to the public for months before Donald Trump was elected — and then repeatedly after he took office.
They lied to Congress as lawmakers sought to investigate Russia’s attack on American democracy in 2016.
And they lied to the FBI, even when they knew lying was a crime.
In indictments and plea agreements unveiled over the last 20 months, special counsel Robert S. Mueller III has shown over and over again that some of President Trump’s closest friends and advisers have lied about Russia and related issues.
On Friday, Mueller laid out a new allegation: that longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone lied to Congress and obstructed its probe of Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign. What Roger Stone’s indictment means for the Russia investigation
Trump and his associates have dismissed the serial deception as a sideshow that has little to do with the central question of the Mueller investigation: whether his campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Russia.
Following Stone’s indictment on Friday, Trump attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani scoffed, “Another false-statement case? God almighty.”
But it is unclear if the special counsel shares that view. While Mueller has not accused any American of criminally coordinating with Russia, the lies meticulously unspooled by his prosecutors over 20 months have not been mere quibbles.
They have documented various falsehoods by Trump advisers that masked efforts by people in his orbit to develop inroads with Russia and leverage that country’s hacking of Democratic emails.
The remaining question — for both Mueller’s team, as it works on a final investigative report, and for the American people — is why.
Did the president’s men lie to protect a still-hidden dark secret about the campaign’s interaction with Russia, engaging in a broad effort to obstruct the probe — one that included perhaps even Trump?
Did they lie to avoid diminishing Trump’s victory by acknowledging Russia played a role in his election?
Did they each lie for their own reasons, taking their cue from the president — who has told many whoppers of his own, including about Russia?
Trump’s former campaign chairman, deputy campaign manager, former national security adviser, personal lawyer and a campaign foreign policy adviser have all been accused of lying to investigators exploring Russia activity.
In their new indictment against Stone, prosecutors said he lied to Congress about his efforts to learn about WikiLeaks’s plans in 2016 as the group was publishing Democratic emails allegedly stolen by Russian operatives.
Stone falsely told Congress that he never discussed his efforts with the Trump campaign and never asked intermediaries to communicate with WikiLeaks’ founder, Julian Assange, Mueller’s team alleges.
Stone has denied the charges and promised to fight in court. “Perjury requires both materiality and intent,” he said on CNN Friday night. “There is none.”
“Secondarily, where’s the Russian collusion?” Stone added. “Where is the WikiLeaks collaboration? Where’s the evidence that I received anything from WikiLeaks or Julian Assange, and passed it on to Donald Trump or the Trump campaign?”
Trump echoed that message himself.
“Greatest Witch Hunt in the History of our Country! NO COLLUSION!” the president tweeted after Stone’s arrest.
Legal experts noted that the alleged lies are significant in their own right.
“Time and time again, elected officials and government officials have exhibited a belief they simply can say what they want in a high-profile investigation, and do so with impunity,” said Jacob S. Frenkel, a former attorney in the independent counsel’s office now in private practice at Dickinson Wright.
Some Trump friends said they are confounded by Stone’s alleged actions.
“If he had told the truth as alleged, there wouldn’t have been an underlying crime,” said Christopher Ruddy, chief executive of Newsmax. “There would have been no crime. They would have had to try and find other stuff.”
The Stone indictment does provide new details that nod at one of Mueller’s central inquiries: trying to determine whether anyone in Trump’s orbit coordinated with Russia or WikiLeaks.
In Friday’s filing, prosecutors lay out efforts by both Stone and Trump campaign officials to learn more about what WikiLeaks had in its cache in the summer of 2016 — actions that occurred after Russia had been fingered as a likely culprit behind the theft of the Democratic Party emails that June.
Still, the mounting false statements charges collected by Mueller do not speak to the question of criminal coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia, some analysts noted.
“I think there is some theory under which you could include them in such a conspiracy, and I wonder why not,” said Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney. “Is it that they don’t think the evidence goes that far? Is it that they think this conduct does not amount to a conspiracy to defraud the United States and it is instead dirty, political tricks?”
Hall said the country needs to take step back from a narrow conversation about the political and even criminal ramifications of each Mueller indictment. “We’ve got to be looking beyond who gets a parking ticket or even a few years in prison,” he said. “What about the bigger picture? This was Russia, attacking the United States.”
The deception by Trump advisers that has led to guilty pleas so far does have a common throughline: Much of it centers on their interactionsabout Russia.
Trump’s longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen admitted lying to Congress about efforts to build a Trump real estate project in Moscow during the campaign — at a time when then-candidate Trump claimed he had no business ties to Russia.
Cohen also lied about seeking help on the lucrative project from one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest advisers. Trump had said no one in his orbit had contact with the Russian government.
Former national security adviser Michael Flynn admitted he lied — first to Vice President Pence, then to the public and finally to the FBI — about whether he had spoken to a Russian envoy in December 2016 about sanctions imposed by President Obama as punishment for Russia’s campaign interference.
That lie came as investigators were working to understand why Russia, whose top foreign policy goals include undoing U.S. sanctions, fought so hard to help elect Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos has admitted lying about his contacts with a professor who gave him early warning in April 2016 that Russia held thousands of Clinton emails.
Prosecutors have said former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has continued to lie even after pleading guilty to two conspiracy charges, which included lying to the Justice Department. His latest lies, they have said, involved details of his campaign interactions with a Russian employee who the FBI has assessed has ties to Russian intelligence.
As they wait for Mueller to finish his investigation, Democrats in Congress are likely to focus on the president himself and what he knew of the lies.
On Friday, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, tweeted: “Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, Rick Gates, Michael Flynn . . . What did the President know and when did he know it?
Some legal analysts said the charges do not appear to be building to a criminal case against the president.
The lying “certainly alerts you to the possibility of kind of obstructionist conspiracies,” said James M. Trusty, a former Justice Department organized crime chief now in private practice at Ifrah Law. But, he added, “at the end of the day, it looks like people are making independent, individual choices that are landing them in hot water. I think it’s the kind of thing that the Mueller probe doesn’t want to ignore . . . but the indictments themselves aren’t moving the case forward.”
The number of lies documented by the special counsel could also undercut Mueller’s efforts to make a broader case by hampering the effort to sort truth from fiction, some longtime Trump associates said.
“In Trump world, everybody lies. Everybody doesn’t tell the truth. At the end of the day, they are all lying. I don’t know how Mueller can believe anybody,” said Louise Sunshine, a longtime executive with the Trump Organization.
Trump allies say the president knows that many of the people around him are not trustworthy — and believes he can use that to his advantage if any of his onetime aides attempt to pin their wrongdoing on him.
He has instructed Giuliani and his other lawyers to question the credibility of anyone who attacks him, according to White House aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations. After Cohen, Trump’s longtime personal attorney, pleaded guilty, the president on Twitter called him a “rat” who “makes up stories.”
Sam Nunberg, a former Trump aide, said he believed that people around Trump lied to investigators because they were trying to make sure their version of events lined up with lies the president was telling to the American people.
“They all conspired,” he said, “against themselves.”

Becoming Jane
Tumblr media
[3.5 stars]
As his follow-up to Kinky Boots, Julian Jerrold produced this bit of snarky reflection on Jane Austin’s early days. He was also immensely helped by Kevin Hood and Sarah Williams’s clever adaptation of Austin’s life to show us the budding 16-year-old author and the events that launched her into history. The pair both managed to both mirror her works and riff on the known history.

“Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” movie review
Tumblr media
Jerrold Tarog, a great director, decided to create a “work of fiction based on facts.” Heneral Luna was released last October 30, 2015, while the film Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, was last September 5, 2018. His two films made a big impact in Philippine history most especially to the people who know their stories based on history teachers and books that have been read and studied. These two characters were not well known but they both made a big impact in saving the country from the Spaniards and Americans. Heneral Luna, portrayed by John Arcilla gave justice to our very own Gen. Antonio Luna. I felt his anger towards the government and that even though trials came up and people backing down on him, he still fought for the country. He knows what is happening on the government, but freedom and independence were the ones he only thinks of. He even tried to step down as being the General but knowing that the people need him, he just cannot leave his people behind. Arron Villaflor as Joven Hernando also played well. He is a calm loyal servant to Gen. Luna even if he knows that danger will come his way. Emilio Aguinaldo was portrayed by Mon Confiado, for me he was not that a good actor to portray Emilio Aguinaldo. Mylene Dizon as Isabel was also good and she was really in character during their scenes. Nonie Buencamino portrayed Felipe Buencamino as an annoying businessman. Ketchup Eusebio as Capt. Janolino is one of Luna’s faithful servants. Gregorio del Pilar, Paulo Avelino was also seen in the film but did not make a big impact on the story.
The film Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, was played by Paulo Avelino, and also directed by Jerrold Tarog. This film is a sequel of Heneral Luna. The film Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral was slow-paced, unlike Heneral Luna. Goyo goes with the flow of the story and is a very calm general. Unlike Luna, del Pilar was a very charismatic ladies’ man and everybody’s favorite. Paulo Avelino was suited to be del Pilar because he is a calm and charismatic guy even in real life. Many people idolize and look up to him as well. Carlo Aquino as Vicente Enriquez and Rafael Siguion- Reyna as Julian del Pilar was Goyo’s confidantes. They were with Goyo in everything he does and the two actors were very good at being a sidekick of Goyo. Carlo Aquino showed in the film how he was loyal to his friend and his own general. Even if Goyo was already killed, he did not stop and surrender until his colleagues told him to do so. Gwen Zamora as Remedios Nable Jose was what Filipina woman was expected to be during those years. She was very Maria Clara like what expected. Zamora’s face was also fitted as that kind of character she portrays. Jeffrey Quizon as Apolinario Mabini was very good most especially that he should deliver his actions through his dialogues since he was not able to do a lot of gestures for he cannot walk. His dialogues really struck the attention and it was full of emotions. Mon Confiado was also in this film as Emilio Aguinaldo. He was very evident in this film unlike in Heneral Luna. Empress Schuck as Felicidad Aguinaldo was also in this film.

O’Rourke appeared at Extreme Election Night 2018 where he faced Ted Cruz (TX-American Patriots) in one of the Senate Medallion matches.
REPLAY: Extreme Election Night 2018- O’Rourke vs. Cruz
Cruz back in the ring. The referee starts a 10 count on Beto who’s slow to remove himself off the barricade. Pelosi and Schumer run over and pull him back. Then they escort O’Rourke back to the ring with the referee hitting 7 on the count. Beto back in and runs right into a front kick. Cruz covers…one…two…Beto grabs the rope.
Cruz goes top turnbuckle.
Colleen Crowder: WHAT IS HE DOING?
Johnny Suave: CRUZ UP TOP!
Cruz leaps off and cannonballs down onto Beto.
Johnny Suave: CANNONBALL SPLASH AND THAT COULD DO IT!
Colleen Crowder: NOOOOOOOO!
11th MINUTE Cruz hooks the legs. One…two…THREE! The referee immediately calls for the bell.
Johnny Suave: THAT’S IT!

SENATE GROUP ALSO VOTES DOWN TRUMP’S SECURITY EMERGENCY DECLARATION Last week, the Progressive Alliance-led House Group voted down CEO of the Political Universe Donald Trump’s (NY-American Patriots) security emergency declaration.
Earlier today, the American Patriot-led Senate Group did the same thing.
The big question now that everyone is asking is will Trump veto the measure or…oh wait, he already did.
BLUE AND RED BRANDS UPDATE Loose Cannons Unleashed is three weeks away and the card continues to take shape.
Charlie Blackwell (American Patriots) wrestles the Ultimate Social Justice Warrior (Progressive Alliance) for a shot at Champion of the Political Universe ‘Red Solo Cup’ Ray McAvay.
Also this weekend, Big Labor (Union Jack Taylor and James the Auto Worker) will face Weapons of Mass Destruction (A. Banks and Kirk Walstreit) at Loose Cannons Unleashed.

NICHOLAS TARKOWSKI WILL RETURN After coming to PCW’s Park City, Kansas show to dig up dirt and being put to work by Dawn McGill, it appears Jerrold Nadler (NY-Progressive Alliance) is giving Nicholas Tarkowski a second chance. Tarkowski will be at PCW’s house show in Jamestown, North Dakota to try his luck again. What diabolical plan does McGill have in mind for the Nadler aide.
COLLEEN CROWDER/GUILD OF LOW-LEVEL REPORTERS UPSET WITH McGILL As expected, Crowder, ‘Low Level Reporter at CNN Trying to Make a Name for Herself’ Sharon Johns, and ‘Low Level Reporter at the Washington Post Trying to Make a Name for Himself’ Dan Miller were furious at McGill over the banning of the Post, the Times, MSNBC, and CNN from covering PCW shows.
How furious are they?
The guild are boycotting the next PCW show…
…even though they are already banned.
CROWDER ALSO UPSET WITH NEW PCW WOMEN’S CHAMPION Crowder also expressed her displeasure over the two women who faced each other for the PCW Women’s title repeatedly last week- ‘Queen of the Trailer Park’ Lani Harlot and Yosemite Samantha.
Yesterday, she reiterated what she’d said on Sunday night: both women did not have the requisite qualities to be called a champion and weren’t the role model that young girls should look up to. Crowder again stated PCW tried to put bright red lipstick on a pig by foisting Harlot and Samantha onto the public as the best candidates to be the Women’s champion.
THIS WEEK ON PCW EXTREME POLITICAL TV -No Colleen Crowder this week. Who steps in to be Suave’s co-host this week? -We find out what kind of trouble Nicholas Tarkowski can get into. -The Bi-Partisan Dream Team (Blue Dog D and RINO-The Wonk Machine) and Weapons of Mass Destruction II (Frank Bomb and Newt Tron Bomb) debut. -‘The One Man Anti-Hollywood A-Lister’ Stone Chism defends the PCW Title against ‘American Citizen’ Kevin Scott in the main event.

Movie Review
Disclaimer: The following contains spoilers, subjective compliments, criticisms, and interpretations of the blogger about the message of the film. Any of the photos used in this blog were included for educational purposes only.
GOYO: Ang Batang Heneral
(Goyo: The Boy General)
[SUMMARY]
The movie “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” follows the life of the young general, Gregorio Del Pilar, during the emerging colonization of Americans in the Philippines during the late 1890s. It introduces Goyo as a famed general who enjoys a false sense of peace following the death of Luna, and then he eventually flees with Aguinaldo and his brigade, as they’re pursued by the Americans. The movie is the second installment of Jerrold Tarog’s war trilogy; the sequel to the movie “Heneral Luna” who also talks about the fate of the strict general of its title.
[OVERVIEW]
CHARACTERS:
There are recurring characters in the movie such as:
Gen. Gregorio del Pilar, the young general
Joven Hernando, the young journalist turned into photographer of del Pilar’s troop.
Lieutenant Garcia, the patriotic sharp-shooter in Heneral Luna.
Maj. Manuel Bernal, the loyal comrade of Luna
President Emilio Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, and Gen. Elwell Otis
There are also new and significant characters to look-out for in the movie. To name a few:
Gen. Alejandrino, Maj. Ortiz, Col. Vicente Enriquez, Col. Julian del Pilar, Remedios Nable Jose, Felicidad Aguinaldo and Lt. Manuel Quezon.
[CONS]
THE TRAGIC FATE OF GOYO
The producers gave justice to Gregorio del Pilar’s reputation as a hero. However, it was not emphasized to the point that I had to watch the film over and over again to notice the subtle heroic attribute of this general. Yanni Roxas’ movie review in Bulatlat.com states that this movie “killed whatever greatness there is in del Pilar by focusing on his foibles and flaws even before it could show him in some heroic exploits”. And at some point, I agree. To me, Goyo’s image became a dog of Emilio Aguinaldo, a leader whose youth seemed to go against him, a conflicted person fighting his inner demons. Good thing, he had his moment of introspection, a change of heart, the night before the devastating battle on Tirad Pass. I just find it sad and sorry for Goyo because he never had a chance to redeem his heroic reputation because he was shot dead right away.
Tumblr media
“I know that the responsibility given to me is tremendous. But I feel that this is the greatest moment of my life. What I’m about to do is for my country whom I love.  There is no greater sacrifice.” – Goyo
PRODUCTION VALUES:
PORTRAYAL: I have no complaints about the acting. However, it would’ve been more accurate if the accents of the characters were emphasized.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: The color-grading in this film is dull compared to Heneral Luna. For me it signifies the frustrating plot of revolution.
Another thing to take note for improvement is the unstable camera work in the scene when General Goyo and Colonel Vicente were going to Don Mariano’s house to congratulate Colonel Julian on his promotion as the military governor of Bulacan.
Tumblr media
Even if the upstairs scene was meant to be shot that way for artistic purposes, I think it is not suitable to use for such scene. That scene has a poor camera work that is distractive and unpleasant to look at. From what I usually observe in foreign movies, that “moving and shaking” style of camera work is meant to reveal the point of view or the eyesight of a character involve in the scene. If that’s the case, then the messenger boy should’ve been there walking behind Goyo and Vicente to justify the purpose of moving/shaky camera work. Other than that, the rest of the scenes that involves unstable and shaky camera work are understandable and tolerable.
POTENTIALLY OFFENSIVE CONTENT:
Note: This film contains offensive language and violence.
Language. There is frequent cussing in the dialogues, and 1 scene with a Filipino soldier mocking and insulting two indigenous people.
Violence. The movie includes 1 torture scene, series of gun fights, and exposure of blood and fatal injuries.
[PROS]
CLEVER TITLE
The title of the movie literally translates “Goyo: The Boy General”, and for me it is well-thought of to the point that it reveals everything significant in the movie. Cleverly, “goyo” is a Filipino term that means “to be played fool”. And later on, in the movie, we can see how this term doesn’t just applies on the ladies Goyo had duped, but also to the Filipinos whose negligence caused failure to the revolution.
The use of the word “boy” instead of “young” hinted the very essence of this movie. Boy, as opposed to man, is commonly described to be childish, playful, naïve and gullible. Throughout the movie, Apolinario Mabini convinces himself that maybe it is right to call the negligence of Filipinos as childishness.
DRY BUT WITTY HUMOR
There were several scenes in the movie that made me smile, laugh and even face-palmed because of the character’s stupidity, yet I won’t deny that this movie is low-key funny.
Tumblr media
CUTE SCENE. Julian and Vicente pushes Joven to mingle with some ladies in Dagupan.
In this scene, Joven proved me that he is an adorable dork. I find it funny how he can’t understand the impertinent replies of the lady (since it was spoken in the dialect on Dagupan) and yet he still politely conversed with them.
Tumblr media
WITTY SCENE. General Alejandrino and his comrade attended a dinner with Otis and McArthur.
The part where General Alejandrino fakes his mention of an order stated in the Philippine Constitution. ”Nasa Constitution ba talaga yan?” “Huwag kang magulo. Hindi ko din alam”. This proved me how clever and to what extent the Pilipino would do just to escape the face of problems.
Tumblr media
FACE-PALMED. [just see it for yourself] The price of arrogance.
Tumblr media
FUNNY. Goyo, Julian, and Vicente went out for midnight swimming. featuring Joven the chaperone/look-out. This scene proves how naughty and reckless they are. Grown-ups acting like little boys.
Goyo:“Last one in has no balls”
Julian (referring to Goyo): “First one in’s an asshole”
Tumblr media
ANOTHER FACE-PALMED MOMENT.  “Kam Amerikans welkam!”—Lt. Garcia
It’s fun until karma strikes back. Arrogance won’t do good.
ROMANCE
Unlike the former installment, the movie features the love life of Goyo as a significant part of his story arc. By just watching, we can say that the romantic element in this movie is dull and tragic. Some viewers commented that the romantic scenes were just fillers and weren’t really necessary in the progression of film. But I say, the romantic scenes in this movie weren’t really intended to give off kilig to its viewers— the scenes were intended to symbolize the dilemma of Goyo as a general of high position, and as a young man with any ordinary man’s interest.
In the film, there are two significant women in Goyo’s life: Remedios, his current love-interest, and Felicidad, the sister of President Aguinaldo, his former lover. Felicidad is a personification of Goyo’s past that is fueled by principles. She had seen him in his troubled times. She knew he is vulnerable. Remedios on the other hand, is a personification of Goyo’s future that is filled with ideals. The discourse these women had on the market while buying mangoes speaks of their characters—Felicidad values existence while Remedios likes to choose what’s best.
LINES WITH IMPACT
Dialogues:I kept on replaying the brief conversation between Gen. Alejandrino and Maj. Ortiz during the settlement of troops. Alejandrino said, “This isn’t about victory anymore, Ortiz. This is all about saving what dignity we have left”.
Also, there are noteworthy lessons in the conversations of Uncle Miguel and Joven like: “Men are moved by two levers only: fear and self-interest” and “Learn from their mistakes”
Voice-Overs: I was captivated by Joven’s messages to his father. It was used as a creative tool to narrate and impart lessons throughout the movie.
The most remarkable part in the movie is when Apolinario Mabini started reading his letter to Marcelo del Pilar, while flashes of significant events are shown. It is like drawing a conclusion to all the morals in the story. I love the part when he said: “But I’m beginning to believe that they are right to call us children.” along with the scene of Lt. Garcia’s young son helplessly running away from the Americans.
PRODUCTION VALUES:
Script: I just love the choice of words. The conversations were not over-the-top. It felt satisfying to hear the character use pure Filipino language. It sounds poetic but at the same time it made me feel a sense of colloquiality because of the way the actors deliver their lines. The delivery of dialects was good. I noticed that from Clara of Dagupan, and the Ilocano dialect of Lt. Garcia.
Casting: For me, the production team did a great casting. Though there are people who detracts Paulo Avelino for the role of Goyo saying “he’s too mestizo, kayumanggi si Goyo” nonverbatim. I think he fits the role well because his charm comes out naturally, and he expresses the internal conflict of Goyo without looking so obvious and exaggerated. Further than that, I commend how they chose actors not by popularity but by the skills. It’s a good thing that the appearance was also considered because it adds up to the impact of the character. Mon Confiado, with his flat top hair, looks really similar to Emilio Aguinaldo.
Acting: The actors did great in portraying their characters. The film showed me no small roles. With their intense acting and on-point facial expressions, the slow-paced plot of the film is brought to life. I would commend Arthur Acuña’s portrayal of Manuel Bernal. Even if his role is not as big as the protagonists, he made it so intense that makes it remarkable. Also, I enjoyed Alvin Anson’s portrayal of Gen. Alejandrino. Quizon’s portrayal of the “brain of the revolution,”—easily one of the best parts of Heneral Luna—continues to be stellar and Mabini in fact delivers some of Goyo’s best lines along with audience surrogate Joven Hernando (Arron Villaflor), the photographer’s assistant from the first film.
Cinematography: Creative. I commend how every frame captures the mood and implies message to its viewers. Also, the drone shots of Mt. Tirad are breathtaking. I don’t mind if some part of the landscape is graphically enhanced, after all it is meticulously and skillfully done. The establishing shot which shows the time and place were on point.
Musical-Score: I love the part when Goyo reads the letter from Remedios below Mt. Tirad— the music (which I think is an instrumental arrangement of Susi) intensifies the mood of the scene. I would also commend the soundtracks they used in the movie. The lyrics of the OST Susi (composed and interpreted by Ben and Ben; with musical arrangements by Miguel Guico and Jerrold Tarog) suits the message of the movie well. It’s like the song is directed to the life of Goyo itself.
The song interpretation of Bato sa Buhangin by Glaiza De Castro in the ending scene gave me goosebumps! It startled me a bit because I was disappointed and dissatisfied by the ending scene of Remedios, then suddenly Glaiza sang out of nowhere without instrumental intro going on.
GOYO:ANG BATANG HENERAL VS. HENERAL LUNA
If Heneral Luna had the catchphrase: “Mga kapatid, meron tayong mas malaking kaaway kaysa sa mga Amerikano: ang ating sarili.” (Brothers, we have an enemy bigger than the Americans: ourselves.)
Goyo has “Tandaan mo kung sino ka.” (Remember who you are.)
A DIFFERENT FLAVOR:
Since this film is less intense compared to Heneral Luna when it comes to action scenes, it is a challenge for the producers to make this film interesting. One thing they included to add thrill is the series of flashbacks and imagined internal struggles.
THE EDGE:
If Goyo succeeds in anything, it is in humanizing the patronized young general Del Pilar. While stories portray him as larger than life, the film grounds his exploits firmly in reality, even his womanizing nature. It’s wonderfully researched and—despite giving the disclaimer in the beginning that it uses fictional elements to deliver a cohesive narrative—gives audiences a better glimpse into the life of one of the country’s heroes. It gives its own version of events, such as sticking to the contention that it was Remedios and not younger sister Dolores who was Goyo’s true love.
[CONCLUSION]
At first, I was frustrated at the progression of the film—I think it was lousy and it didn’t really meet my expectations. Then I watched it for the second time around hoping to subvert my negatives and find the bright side of the film. I decided to focus more on the lines and the complexity of the characters. As I delve deeper on its plot and dialogues, I realized how significant the point they are trying to imply on its viewers. This film doesn’t just want to please our eyes—the movie encourages us Filipinos to ponder and reflect on our current situation from what
It is not just about the life of the young general Gregorio Del Pilar— the entire film, slow and plodding as it is, is a well-crafted argument against the selfishness of the men who shape this nation. Mabini narrates that it is only in fighting, in dying as a soldier, that Aguinaldo may regain his lost honor and prestige. But as the disgraced first President stares blankly at the sunset over Malacañan, he mutters that he has already given fealty to the United States. It’s a chillingly familiar refrain: A leader who seems to favor another country over his own. Mabini laments that perhaps the Americans were right, after all—that we are but mere children trying to fight a grown man’s war. He says that Filipinos ignite with passion very quickly, but burn out just as fast. It’s a terrifying reminder that the Philippines may be doomed to follow the lead of people who put their own interests above the country’s.
Note:
Though the film is a stand-alone type of movie, I suggest you go and watch Heneral Luna and Angelito first, respectively, before watching Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral in order to clearly understand what’s going on in the movie.
Heneral Luna is the first installment of Jerrold Tarog’s Philippine war trilogy that was launched last September 2015. It lasts for about two and half hours.
Angelito is a short film uploaded in TBA Studios’ and Globe PH’s YouTube channel. The short film, which lasts for only 21 minutes and 12 second, serves as the bridge to the two movie installments.
“Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” has a screen time of almost 2 hours and 30 minutes including the intro and credits.
It is a must-watch movie for those who loves historical films. I highly recommend it to those who wants to know more about the Philippine history.
To those who haven’t watch any of the two movies yet, it is already available on Netflix.

House Judiciary Requests Documents From 81 People And Entities, ‘Cause There’s No Harm In Asking, I Guess?
Tumblr media
Jerry Nadler thinking of 81 people he’d rather be sitting next to, probably. (Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images)
There is a world where both Democrats and Republicans work together to conduct a reasonable investigation about a massive international conspiracy to influence an American election. There’s a world in which they work tirelessly to impeach or otherwise hold accountable the government officials who participated in that scheme.
That is not the world we live in.
Instead, we live on this plane of torment that can’t burn to the ground fast enough. Republicans spent two years in power trying to obstruct any serious investigation into Trump’s activities. Now the Democrats are in charge and a real investigation is taking place. But stupidity can still not be avoided.
The House Judiciary Committee released a list of 81 people and entities that it would like to see documents from. The request is overbroad, and I think I’m being a biased hack who is too charitable towards the Democrats by merely calling it “overbroad.”
Here are some of the people House Judiciary would like to just… turn over papers because they were asked:
* Jay Sekulow — Trump’s personal attorney. * Julian Assange — currently living in exile. * Don McGahn — Former White House Counsel * Federal Bureau of Investigation — Sure, why not? * Michael Cohen — I think we’ve covered this? * General Services Administration — GTFO of my face with this
House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler suggested that these requests would be backed up by subpoenas if the documents are not voluntarily handed over. I think he means to say: “subpoenas, which will in some cases be fought tooth and nail for years or until the Sun swallows the Earth whole.”
Nadler is entirely too smart to think that this list is actually a thing. Some of the people on the list have entirely reasonable privilege arguments to make. Like, ALL the privileges: attorney-client, executive, work-product, investigative privilege — to the extent that’s a thing. Even people with bad privilege arguments are certainly invited to make them, if they are ever even served with a subpoena.
You can see the full list of requests here. I, too, would like to see documents from all these people. While we’re at it, I’d also like to see what the FBI has on who killed Biggie and Tupac. But the notion that all these people or entities, or even most of them, will just hand over documents willingly is foolish.
Nadler knows all this. The television says that House Judiciary started with a list of 150 people and had to whittle it down, and I have to believe that Nadler was one of the guys in the room trying to explain to his colleagues why putting some of the people on this list is dumb. It’s a flashy list, and it puts Trump on notice, to the extent he wasn’t already, the the House is coming for his entire allegedly criminal enterprise. I’m sure that’s what some Democrats wanted to do.
I’m just not sure the list of 81 people and entities even counts as “news.” It’s more like writing down your list of three wishes just in case a Genie ever pops out of your thermos.
Let’s keep our eyes on the ball. The next shoes to drop need to be Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg and Trump secretary Rhona Graff. They need to establish further basis for investigating the Trump children and Jared Kushner. Those people are on the list (except for Ivanka, weirdly) and we should focus on them. An open-ended document request from “Department of Justice” (I’m not making that up) is just NOT a serious step towards exposing the truth.

“I really thought it was a bit of a waste of time, driving out to Disney for the audition, as I really couldn’t imagine they’d cast me.” [But director Julian Jerrold was taken by Joel's "everyman quality" and selected him for Charlie.] “I got to the set for the first day of shooting and we were doing the scene in which I give a speech to the factory workers. I was shitting myself. I was really nervous about doing the accent and worried that I was going to get found out and sacked...That was the biggest fright for me."--  Joel Edgerton recalling how his agent sneaked him into an audition for 'Kinky Boots' without revealing that he was Australian, and his terror when he got the part and had to deliver in an authentic Northampton accent

Becoming Jane
The flick is led wonderfully by Anne Hathaway (Serenity) and James McAvoy (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) in the Austin and Lefroy roles (actual age of the actors aside). Lefroy truly existed, and there is evidence of their deep affection and end to their story, though the script does take liberties in order to give more power to Austin. The change is forgivable given the purpose and the difficulty in doing a comedy of manners from the late 1700’s in modern times.
The duo are supported by a great cast as well. With Maggie Smith (Sherlock Gnomes), Julie Walters (Wild Rose), James Cromwell (Dante’s Inferno), and, in a small but pivotal role and his final performance, the late, great Ian Richardson pitches in as well.
And then there were other emerging talents such as Anna Maxwell Martin (The Bletchley Circle), Lucy Cohu (Summer of Rockets), and Laurence Fox (Inspector Lewis). Each provided a foil for Hathaway and deepened the tale.
Now, all this effusive outpouring aside, it is still, at its heart Austin. Not my favorite. I loved the verbal banter between Hathaway and McAvoy, which they delivered well. They also made a credible couple. They even managed to agonize in ways that helped make the challenge of the times (romantic attachment vs. duty to family/semi-arranged marriage) at least clearer, if not entirely palpable. But the base issues just never quite grab me as I just find it all so frustrating, even if accurate to the period. This came close to helping me settle into the realities a bit more and feel the story, but there is still a good deal of assumption about what the audience already understood and accepted. But adding to the positives, it is also sumptuously filmed.
If you like Austin, you’ve probably already seen this, so I don’t need to tell you. If you are roped into seeing it, as I was, it honestly isn’t all that bad. It will never make my top 10 movie list, but it might easily make my top 3 Austin/period piece list. So, that’s something.

Who Might Argue the Case Against Trump in the Senate Impeachment Trial?
When the U.S. Senate begins the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump, a handful of lawmakers from the House of Representatives will act as prosecutors to lay out the case against the president.
Those “managers,” as they are formally known, will likely be appointed on Wednesday when House Democrats transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate.
Here are some of the leading candidates:
JERROLD NADLER
The House Judiciary Committee chairman, 72, has been a Trump antagonist since he opposed a Trump real estate development in Manhattan decades ago as a New York state assemblyman.
Nadler’s committee crafted the two articles of impeachment against Trump, which were approved by the House on Dec. 18.
ADAM SCHIFF
The House Intelligence Committee chairman, 59, has been a leading figure in the impeachment inquiry that preceded the vote.
Schiff spearheaded an investigation that featured testimony from U.S. officials about Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, both in private and on national television. He also been a favorite punching bag for House Republicans.
A former federal prosecutor, he represents a district in the Los Angeles area.
HAKEEM JEFFRIES
Jeffries, 49, is considered a rising star in the party and a potential future House Speaker. Representing a district in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, he was the top House Democrat behind a bipartisan criminal-justice reform bill that Trump signed into law in 2018.
VAL DEMINGS
Demings, 62, is the former chief of the Orlando, Florida police department. As a member of both the Judiciary and Intelligence committees, she has been involved in the impeachment investigation for months and knows the case against the president well.
ERIC SWALWELL
Like Demings, the 39-year-old Californian sits on both the Judiciary and Intelligence committees. He briefly ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
A former deputy district attorney, Swalwell is described by aides as being close to Schiff.
JAMIE RASKIN
A former constitutional law professor, the 57-year-old Maryland Democrat has played a prominent role on the House Judiciary Committee. Raskin, whose father was an aide to former President John F. Kennedy, filled in for Nadler to shepherd the articles of impeachment to the House floor.
RAJA KRISHNAMOORTHI
Krishnamoorthi, 46, was born in India and came to the United States at the age of 3. He worked as a state prosecutor before he was elected in 2016 to represent a district in a Chicago suburb.
During the impeachment hearings, Krishnamoorthi came to the defense of one of the star witnesses, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, who faced insinuations of disloyalty because he was born in Ukraine and emigrated as a child to the United States.
“From one immigrant American to another immigrant American, I want to say that you and your family represent the very best of America,” Krishnamoorthi told Vindman.
ZOE LOFGREN
Lofgren, 72, has deep experience with impeachment.
She began her Washington career as a House Judiciary Committee aide when it held impeachment hearings against Republican President Richard Nixon in 1974. Elected to the House in 1994 to represent a Northern California district, she has served on the Judiciary Committee while it drafted impeachment articles against both Trump and Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1998.
PRAMILA JAYAPAL
An outspoken progressive, Jayapal, 54, became the first Indan-American woman to serve in Congress when she was elected to represent a Seattle-area district in 2014. She was a civil-rights activist before she was elected.
JOAQUIN CASTRO
A member of the Intelligence Committee, Castro, 45, also chaired his identical twin brother Julian Castro’s presidential campaign.
He was first elected to represent his San Antonio district in 2012.
