"Hell of a Summer"
There are a few jokey gags, but the laughs that this camp slasher film needs are nowhere to be found.
Besides the method and style of the murders, one of the best parts of a successful slasher movie is an inventive, or at least reasonably good, motive for the bloodshed. That’s one of the crucial things that “Hell of a Summer,” from co-directors Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard, is missing. The dumb motivation of a camp slayer paired with uncreative kills makes this a big misfire for the genre…

8 shows to get to know me. tagged by @thehitchikerdude :)
supernatural 😔 (self explanatory) (gave me brainworms at 13 AND at 20)
please like me. i legitimately watch this like once a year and sob through the last 2 episodes every time.
black sails. show of all time. a story is true a story is untrue. wough 😵💫 have never been able to fully rewatch this show
the oa. watched this in april 2020 and SOBBED for 2 straight hours after finishing the second season because it was cancelled. its SO good and SO sexy (the house in s2 that eats people. my god....) and SO beautiful. forever mad it got cancelled because the cliffhanger makes me so crazy (i simply love when actors play themselves in things). jason isaacs
murdoch mysteries. well this show is not good (and is somehow still running) but i was Obsessed with it in middle/high school which has to count for something
dispatches from elsewhere. this show made me so crazy i genuinely believed the characters were going to walk out of my television screen and into real life. v funny and v heartfelt and also richard e grant is there to monologue at the camera
taskmaster. its fun! i love watching comedians fail to do tasks. shoutout to the guy on youtube who's uploading the new seasons :) also the new zealand and australian versions are v good
halt and catch fire. i watched this while i was quarantining in a hotel for 2 weeks and joe macmillan is the character of all time. keot yelling HE'S A PERSON at my laptop screen because he's real to me
tagging @taros @liapher @bettysweep @blacksails2014 + @werewolfcafe ❣️
#um. realizing a lot of these are pandemic watches. but i don't really watch that much tv and they're the ones i think about a lot.#murdoch mysteries would not recommend but truly. julia/murdoch slowburn of all time. EYE remember when they couldn't be together bc she was#married to that doctor. EYE was there when he said they could get a divorce and then was like nevermind i don't want that actually. EYE was#there when the doctor husband got murdered and everyone thought it was murdoch. EYE remember murdoch was discriminated against for being#roman catholic and not protestant. EYE was there for the republic of doyle/murdoch mysteries crossover event. and when arthur conan doyle#was there and wrote a sherlock holmes story about murdoch. truly stupid show#isabel.txt#honourable mentions to alias grace (the best canadian tv show ever made. sarah gadon was so incredible in it and everyone should watch it)#and the exorcist which took over my life for 6 months in 2017-2018 even though it scares me so so bad. rip ben daniels i've watched some#truly terrible things because you were in them

so there is some interesting things happening in the replies of this and suffice to say, labeling all this and even saying predstrogen is complicit in discourse is extremely unhelpful if there is a call to unity. tma and tme is bullshit and doesn't exist. all trans people, and to an extent everyone, faces oppositional sexism. if unity is really what we want, it's important to acknowledge how we are all affected by O.S.
two lovely companion pieces summing up oppositional sexism:

https://juliaserano.medium.com/on-male-socialization-and-the-trans-masc-versus-trans-fem-discourse-14bccb196a63
fwiw to the 2nd poster i agree that there should be unity, but please don't throw the woman that this incident is about under the bus at the same time
Dave is catching me up to the latest tumblr CEO news and uhhhh what is happening ?????

Embracing The Sweat
It Is Our Ony Form Of Emancipation “Your bike is a discovery; your bike is freedom. It doesn’t matter where you are when you’re on the saddle, you’re taken away.” Doug Donaldson I’m back in the saddle again. youve got a lot of really great thoughts on a transphobia and homophobia, tbh more critical thinking than most people on here, and i was wondering how much you knew about the theory of rapid onset gender dysphoria/if youd be comfortable sharing your thoughts on the ridiculous idea
It was explicitly invented by transphobes as a means of delegitimizing trans identity, and that invention was backed up by a "study" in which the person running the study never spoke to any trans people or to any professionals providing care for trans people, only spoke to the parents of trans minors, and those parents were specifically recruited from forums for anti-trans parents.
The paper which supposedly coined ROGD was taken down for a while and corrected. Further studies have found no basis for ROGD.
What's really interesting is in the cache of emails which became public earlier this year from a former detransitioner there's a paper trail which pretty clearly indicates that the term was actually created on a very heinous website called 4th/wave/now (forgive my anti-search slashes, these people are awful) well prior to the study.
Hey, you want to guess where the parents for this study were recruited from? If you guessed "the one where the term was invented," you're right!
But wait, there's more!
It appears from the journalistic work done by Mother Jones, Jude Doyle, and Julia Serano, that this term was created by an anti-trans activist who works extensively with right-wing think tanks and who went to great lengths to hide that she invented the term.
Jude Doyle:
Finding anti-trans narratives that would “sell” to the general public was a constant concern for this crowd, and Shupe says it didn’t much matter if the narratives were based in fact or not. Marchiano, for instance, eagerly watched the spread of the ROGD theory — “[transfeminist writer and researcher Julia] Serano has already written a takedown,” she exulted in one August 2018 email. Shupe suspects Marchiano’s role is larger than the public knows: “Marchiano never explicitly said she is the inventor of ROGD, but the evidence points to her, and she’s listed as a contributor to the [Lisa Littman] study on PLOS One,” she writes to me. “My ‘opinion’ is that Marchiano and the 4thWaveNow folks are behind the ROGD study, and Littman merely fronted it for them to make it appear unbiased.”
Jude Doyle again:
On July 2, Shupe sent Marchiano a link to Jones’ blog post telling her “you’ve upset Zinnia again.” (Shupe had a tendency to send Marchiano news of ROGD, and to attribute the theory to “you” — that is, to Marchiano — whether Marchiano was explicitly named or not. In the communications I’ve reviewed, Marchiano does not reject the attribution.) Marchiano responded by saying that Jones had done something to “make her nervous” — namely, she’d dug up a blog post about ROGD that Marchiano had written under her own name.
Julia Serano:
If all of this is true — that Marchiano ran YCTP and invented ROGD — then it would follow that Marchiano was also likely skepticaltherapist, the supposed parent of a trans child who invented the idea of “transgender social contagion” in the first place.
Julia Serano again:
Also on March 15, 2016, at 6:07am (so very early in the day, likely before the aforementioned YTCP piece is published), skepticaltherapist posts her final comment on 4thwavenow before mysteriously disappearing. In a reply to someone named Starrymessenger, skepticaltherapist says: 'I wanted to mention that this month’s Psychotherapy Networker is focusing on trans youth issues, and the tone of each article is uncritically celebratory — lots of mentions of “courage,” and “bravery.” You may need a subscription or at least an account to comment, but I have so far.'
At the time of this comment, "Lisa" is the *only* person to have posted a comment on this particular Psychotherapy Networker article, as the 2nd comment doesn't appear until later that evening (7:30:15 PM on March 15th; both 4thwavenow & Psychotherapy Networker appear to be based in the U.S., so the should be only a few hours apart, if at all). Therefore, "Lisa" and skepticaltherapist must be the same person.
Did you catch all of that?
This is a fraudulent "diagnosis" explicitly invented by an anti-trans psychologist who at times has used sockpuppets to manipulate online conversations, claimed at times to be the mother of a trans child, or maybe it was her friend who had the trans child, or maybe she just knew somebody who just randomly decided he was a trans boy after going on tumblr. (Boy, does Lisa Marchiano hate Tumblr, lol.)
After inventing this diagnosis and pushing it on a forum for parents who don't like that they have trans kids, Marchiano then approaches a different researcher and uses this other researcher to launder this term, launching it into the verbal stratosphere, while explicitly working with right-wing groups who used this "evidence" to manufacture anti-trans bills. This list of right-wing groups and individuals includes the Alliance Defending Freedom, the "American College of Pediatricians," -- not to be confused with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the legitimate organization, ACPeds is a fringe right-wing group.
They literally made all of this up, this idea that transmasculine people specifically are being "infected" by online sources, and then they laundered it through a shitty study and tried to hide the laundering they did, so that shit like this can happen:
The president of the American Principles Project, a member of the coalition, recently told the New York Times that his group’s goal is to eliminate all transition care, starting with children because that’s “where the consensus is.”
This isn't about protecting children or any bullshit like that, and it's not about this fallacious "disorder" because it doesn't exist -- and they know it doesn't exist. They know it doesn't exist because they were the ones who made it up.
Like... what else is there to say? It's like if I made up Purple Big Toe Disease and claimed that all people taller than 5'10" and born on a Tuesday have Purple Big Toe Disease and should not be able to buy aspirin, because it's G-d's plan that people who have Purple Big Toe Disease should not prevent themselves from feeling the pain that G-d has planned for them, and then I asked someone to write a paper about PBTD and pretend I wasn't the one who made it up so I could point at the paper and be like le gasp, PBTD is the number one problem! We need to stop everyone over 5'10" and born on a Tuesday from being able to buy aspirin! And then some dude in South Dakota starts writing up bills in consultation with a bunch of Evangelical lawyers to deny basic health care to people over 5'10" and born on Tuesdays.
If it sounds fucking ridiculous, it's because it is.

Are there any non-fiction you can recommend for people who are fascinated by your blog (especially the elements of dark eroticism, morbidity and horror)?
🖤 love that you are loving!
i will try to stick to non-fic (also refraining as best i can from re-recommending texts from previous asks but there is of course bound to be some overlap): - The Severed Head: Capital Visions, Julia Kristeva -> read about Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for Salomé (x, x)
and supplement w Baudelaire's Une Martyre "in which the narrator lovingly contemplates the beauty of a woman's severed head at rest upon a nightstand"
- Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs, Deleuze - The Sadeian Woman: And the Ideology of Pornography, Angela Carter - Aesthetic Sexuality: A Literary History of Sadomasochism, Romana Byrne - Perverse Desire and the Ambiguous Icon, Allen S. Weiss - "Must We Burn Sade?", Simone de Beauvoir -> read also about Erzsébet Báthory, the Bloody Countess. supplement your readings with Borowcyzk's Immoral Tales (1973), Julie Delpy's The Countess (2009), Alejandra Pizarnik's La Condesa Sangrienta and/or, if you have the stomach for it:
Lorna's death in Hostel Pt II (2007), inspired by the Countess^
- Anaïs Nin's diaries + Henry and June - Abject Eroticism in Northern Renaissance Art, Yvonne Owens
Hans Baldung Grien "gave powerful visual expression to late medieval tropes and stereotypes, such as the poison maiden, venomous virgin, the Fall of Man, 'death and the maiden' and other motifs and eschatological themes, which mingled abject and erotic qualities in the female body"
- Satanic Feminism: Lucifer as the Liberator of Woman in Nineteenth-Century Culture, Per Faxneld - The Library of Esoterica's Witchcraft - the biographical Taschen on H.R. Giger's oeuvre—biomechanical, Lovecraftian-tentacular fused limbs, bodies, systems, overtly phallic/yonic symbology, darkly psychedelic... very much fantastically erotic; I have my eye on the 40th Anniversary Edition
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/48f170e09fd050ca55db22356b0fd558/816b327d34f8153a-74/s540x810/3f682022327b1840c9407798e759376c1439c826.jpg)

Giger, as we know, having designed the xenomorph from the Alien (1979) series to have an intensely sexual evolution:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/709825fa802eb47e23e1bd151c1a74ed/816b327d34f8153a-6e/s540x810/ef400542f62d4b3959a4bace08024063831d1d70.jpg)
- DEFINITELY read about+explore ero guro (see also: Bataille's L'histoire de l'œil / Story of the Eye! though it is fiction)
brief introductory articles here and here but it's truly so rich and decadent... delve into it!! film, lit, manga, history, so on... -> watch Nagisa Ōshima's In The Realm Of The Senses (1976) too
- if you can read French by any chance, Le Corps Souillé (The Soiled Body) by Eric Falardeau looks incredible; if not, this excerpt alone is delightfully provocative even in isolation - similarly, L'espirit de plaisir: Une histoire de la sexualité et de l’érotisme au Japon (The Spirit of Pleasure: A History of Sexuality and Eroticism in Japan) by Philippe Pons and Pierre-François Souyri is something I'm hoping might see an English translation
^an excerpt from an interview with the authors
- The Art of Cruelty + The Red Parts, Maggie Nelson - Crucial Interventions: An Illustrated Treatise on the Principles & Practice of Nineteenth-Century Surgery, Richard Barnett - The Butchering Art, Lindsey Fitzharris - Death, Disease and Dissection, Suzie Grogan - The Theatre and Its Double, Antonin Artaud - Men, Women, and Chainsaws, Carol J. Clover - House of Psychotic Women, Kier-La Janisse - The Monstrous-Feminine, Barbara Creed - Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers, Sady Doyle - The Lady From The Black Lagoon, Mallory O'Meara

ok chat the poll is over time to reveal the answers
someone is killed in a giant microwave - YEAH season 12 episode 1 murdoch mystery mansion. the potato cooking room was at first a hypothetical presented in an earlier season that murdoch made a reality during the designing of his house ! someone then used the room to kill someone inside uh oh
sigmund freud's gaydar - YEAH season 15 episode 12 murdoch on the couch. sigmund freud, who's at the station house because of a threat to his life, reads henry's letter addressed to george and believes it to be a letter for a lover. when henry brings this up to brax and watts later, they don't contest this ! (in fact claiming this was the only thing he was right about) was going to make a joke about how he was like i know what you are but he actually seemed like genuine and objective with it honestly what the hell was up with that.
re-enactment of the last supper with dead bodies - YEAH season 9 episode 4 barenaked ladies. to make a poetic point about guilt and betrayal, someone kills some people who they think have wronged someone and electroplates them in the poses of various figures from the last supper.
one of the main characters kills jack the ripper - YEAH season 2 episode 2 snakes and ladders. a serial killer on the loose suspected to be jack the ripper is in toronto, and in a fight with him in the morgue, julia kills him. she is understandably shaken by this and the end of the episode she dances with murdoch because she’d like to be held <3
sherlock holmes meets arthur conan doyle. yeah they meet each other - YEAH season 6 episode 4 a study in sherlock. due to childhood trauma, there's a guy in toronto living as sherlock holmes :)) murdoch is frustrated that he won't believe that sherlock holmes isn't real, so to convince him, he invites arthur conan doyle, who happens to be visiting toronto, over.
reincarnation is real - YEAH season 6 episode 11 lovers in a murderous time. cant believe yall forgot this one this was one of my fav episodes the first time i watched s06 but anyways. two people bear a striking resemblance to two doomed lovers from many years ago, and the woman has visions and dreams of memories of details she can't possibly know ! they're reincarnated lovers. whoah
pig flies - YEAH season 6 episode 1 murdoch air. james pendrick, flying his test craft in the race for the world's first controlled air craft, tested a harness by using a dead pig as a passenger. was reminded of this one because in a s15 episode the brackenreids were laughing abt something and margaret said "when pigs fly!" and brax was like "i've seen that happen actually" <3
murdoch invents uber - NAH. murdoch does not invent uber. the closest we get to uber is not murdoch's invention but george and henry with henry's cab :) this lie kind of falls apart when you consider that murdoch's inventions are almost always technological innovations, while uber is. a business. and murdoch doesn't even like cars.
murdoch dies in a tub but only temporarily - YEAH season 5 episode 10 staircase to heaven. murdoch investigates a death within a club (one member being emily) who compete for a chance to "die" to see what the afterlife looks like, dropping them as close to death as possible and then reviving them, and murdoch tries it out yeah 👍
murdoch beats up santa claus - YEAH season 17 episode 9 the christmas list. in possibly his most out of character episode, murdoch suspects department store santa claus of theft and tries to arrest him in front of the children, then when santa resists, murdoch beats the shit out of him
#huzzah for our batshit insane show#murdoch mysteries#the last time i watched snakes and ladders and staircase to heaven was a while ago so the details are fuzzy on those ones

9 books i plan to read in 2025, as tagged by @kittymannequin @kshaar @sarahlancashire 💕💕💕
1. The Turn of The Screw by Henry James - technically i have already read this one, but this was TOP of my list to read for this year so it deserves its spot. i first read this ten years ago while i was at uni and absolutely loved it, then the story got new meaning with mike flanagan’s adaptation. very understated, but very charming. there is nothing like that final line, for me, i think i've thought about it at least twice a day since i first read it. and it's always good to see the new year in with a cheeky haunting.
2. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - because we’re apparently on a flanagan theme, but i’ve wanted to read this since watching his adaptation and i started it just the other night. i’m right at the very beginning, but i can already tell i’m going to love eleanor and theodora to pieces.
3. We Have Always Lived in The Castle by Shirley Jackson - i meant to pick this up last year but just never got around to it, and it’s since been recommended to me by two or three people, so it’s high priority (after a little break after hill house; i prefer not to read authors back to back unless it’s works from the same series). i’m really looking forward to this one! i loved shirley jackson’s sense of humour in The Sundial, her characters are so interesting and off the page, really excited to read more of her work this year.
4. Salt Slow by Julia Armfield - i’ve already read the first short story in this collection, and while it’s a very different feel to her novels, her voice is there. hoping this tides me over until her next release. (shaking, twitching, rattling the bars of my cage, etc.)
5. How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix - leftover from last year and waiting in line on my bedside table to be picked up, i’m determined to get to this one quickly. i’ve read no more than the first sentence, which is hilarious, so i’ve high hopes and crossed fingers.
6. Eyes Guts Throat Bones by Moira Fowley-Doyle - a more recent recommendation but i literally cannot stop thinking about the title it's haunting me. it's in my walls. really looking forward to seeing what this is all about.
7. I Await the Devil's Coming by Mary MacLane - she's been on my radar since reading Plain Bad Heroines, i meant to pick her up last year to see what she was all about, but i'm determined to get around to it in 2025. very intrigued.
8. The Upstairs House by Julia Fine - i can't remember where this one came from, i have a feeling it was a rec from somebody, but i'm really on a haunted house kick at the moment and this sounds about perfect. high high hopes for this one.
9. The God of the Woods by Liz Moore - definitely saw a goodreads friend reading this and pinched it for my to-read, but the synopsis sounds sooo fun and terrible. it automatically reminded me of On the Savage Side (and actually a bit of Sharp Objects too), whether there are any real similarities, but mysteries surrounded by teen girls and the woods are always right up my alley, so. :)
and tagging, but no pressure: @kpgimpactor, @butimnotasexyrussian, @lesbiangracehanson, @jmflowers, @robinyourcreator, @lizmitches, @xekstrin, @tahthetrickster, @vrylium but if you see this and you want to partake then i'm tagging you too and you must tag me in your post i'm so nosy!!
#long post#i already know i'm not going to do as well this year as i did last year purely numbers wise - because i could read at my desk last year#while it was very quiet. this year i won't get the opportunity lmao#but still! really looking forward to delving into these and finding more weird house books that i can torment my brother with
