Bette Davis - The First Lady of the American Screen

Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis (born in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 5, 1908) was an American actress who is one of the most prominent of the 20th century, making her "The First Lady of the American Screen."

Coming from an English family, Davis got a part as a chorus girl and made her Broadway debut in 1929 after graduating from Cushing Academy. One year later, moved to Hollywood to test for Universal. She got a contract, but her first films were unsuccessful.

She joined Warner Bros. in 1932 and had her breakthrough in Of Human Bondage (1934). Even after losing a legal case to cancel her contract, she became a celebrated leading lady. A period of decline in the 1940s was redeemed with her role in All About Eve (1950), often cited as her best. Her final years were marred by ill health, but she continued acting until shortly before her death from breast cancer in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France at 81.

Legacy:

She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice: Dangerous (1936) and Jezebel (1939)

Was the 1st person to have 10 Oscar nominations for acting and set a record for the most consecutive with five

Nominated for three Golden Globe Best Actress: 1951, 1962, and 1963, and the Primetime Emmy Award in 1979 and nominated in 1980 and 1983

Nominated for the 1959 BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actress

Won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 1937 Venice Film Festival

Won the National Board of Review Best Acting twice in 1939 and 1942

Won the Photoplay Awards - Best Performances of the Month in Jul 1939 and Dec 1950 and the 1963 Most Popular Female Star

Listed by the Motion Picture Herald as one of America’s top-10 box office draws in 1939 to 1941 and 1944

Co-founded the Hollywood Canteen in 1941

BÄSTA JULKALENDERN TOURNAMENT: OMGÅNG 2

Nu är den här, nu är den här (underbart att du är där klappa pappa samma mamma)

Lite tankar om omgång 1:

Jag är lite besviken att 2007 inte vann. Tycker personligen att En riktig jul är bättre än LasseMaja (tycker faktiskt hela LasseMajas franchise är överskattad). Men men.

Nu i nästa omgång kommer både 2022 och 2023 vara med. Nu när 2023 har över halva julkalendern sänd kan det vara enklare att avgöra om den är bättre eller sämre mot den den möter.

Flera som blev oavgjorda, vilket gör att båda kommer vara med i nästa omgång.

Det var en som inte var oavgjord, och det var mellan Pelle Svanslös och Greveholm. Däremot, fick jag flertal protester angående detta, då det kändes orättvist, och därför går båda vidare... men bara denna omgång! 90-talet har helt enkelt för många bangers, så båda får gå vidare för denna gång. Här är grejen dock: Skulle båda gå vidare skulle de möta Greveholm 2. Och det kändes lite slag på näsan för Pelle Svanslös att möta två Greveholms på samma gång. Så vad gjorde jag då? Jag kunde gjort att Greveholm och Pelle Svanslös inte var i samma poll längre. Dock, vilka skulle de då möta? Då hade jag behövt placera om flera andra också. Och... jag är lite mer kaotisk än så. Jag bestämde mig... att de fortfarande är i samma poll, men att de byter position med en annan julkalender... så nu möter dem...

TROLLTIDER.

Innan ni sätter upp era högafflar: Min plan med detta är att jag vet att två av tre är giganter, och om de möter varandra nu kan det jämnas ut. ELLER, så blir folk så indecisive att de bestämmer sig att rösta på den som, självklart är populär, men kanske inte gigant på samma sätt. Vad jag säger är, detta kan leda till ett krig mellan Greveholm och Trolltider, och sen segrar Pelle Svanslös som the underdog. Eller inte. Kanske Pelle Svanslös leder hela tiden och det blir kalabalik! Eller så vinner Trolltider eller Greveholm istället, men bara en av dem! Vi får helt enkelt se! JAG ÄLSKAR KAOS.

Kanske kontroversiellt att en "större" julkalender kommer åka ut i omgång 2, men är det inte också lite roligt när det blir mer oförutsägbart vem som kan vinna?

Detta är den enda gången jag kommer göra sånna här ändringar i omgångarna. Från och med nu lovar jag att alla kommer hållas på samma plats i turneringen som innan.

På Luffen i Beverly Hills / Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986) [__] 📜 Inte en av Bette Midlers bästa. Mer märklig än bra.

F��r första gången på många år kände jag faktiskt för att se en och annan julfilm kring jul. Vet inte om det var en effekt av att jag jobbade i år. Anyways, vill man klammra sig fast vid julhelgerna ett tag till kan man testa se "Christmas Getaway".

Danish Loki

To contextualise how Loki is thought of in contemporary Danish culture (as opposed to Anglophone and specifically Danish because I don’t want to speak for Swedes and Norwegians), I’ll go through some Lokis from Scandinvian art, then some popular culture Lokis from Denmark.

Now, have a couple Þrymskviða!Lokis where Loki is way more chill about what’s happening than Thor.

Valhalla, comic, 1978-2009

A comic based on the Poetic Edda. Hugely influential on the Danish conceptualisation of all the Gods, particularly visually. Apparently inspired by a newspaper comic called De gamle guder (The Old Gods) from 1941-41 but I haven’t been able to find any pictures of how Loki is depicted in that. Probably at least part of why Loki has mostly been depicted with black hair ever since. Unsure what, if anything, the relationship to Marvel!Loki is.

This movie personally forms the basis of my childhood impression of the gods, including Loki. Buddy cop dynamic between quick-tempered Thor and manipulative Loki.

The other basis of my impression of the gods before I read the Eddas or anything. In the Nordic countries, we have a tradition of shows (usually for kids) that run one episode a day from December 1st to Christmas Eve and have some Christmas-y theme. This was a ridiculously popular one that took it’s inspiration from Norse Mythology (loosely so, but it’s still a lot more accurate than Anglophone depictions tend to be, so...)

Loki is a central figure. The plot starts off when two modern kids discover him chained up in a nearby cave and are eventually manipulated into removing his chains, setting off events that will lead to Ragnarok. By the end of the story, though, Ragnarok is prevented by redeeming Loki.

This version contains the same inaccuracy as Marvel!Loki in that Loki claims to be Odin’s adoptive son rahter than adoptive brother -- still, this is just Loki talking. We can be generous and just assume he was lying for sympathy. It’s not a big point like in Marvel.

What people who watched it as kids remember best about this Loki, though, is his, uhm... revenge song with fur bikini back-up dancers.

Valhalla, live action movie, 2019

Live action adaptation of the first arc of the comic book. Personality-wise, the characters are generally less cartoonish versions of their comic book counterparts -- Thor is still quick-tempered and Loki is still manipulative, but Thor’s rages aren’t as over the top and his fatherly side is more emphasised and Loki isn’t as obviously smug and his calming influence on Thor is more emphasised. He’s a somewhat minor character in it, though, mostly there to form a duo with Thor.

Also you could literally read Thor, Loki and Sif as a throuple in this movie and nothing would contradict it. They lived together in the comic and animated movie as well, so it’s always been there, but it really struck me with this movie. IIRC they all sleep in the same room. Which is perhaps fitting for the setting regardless, but nevertheless.

Aaaand that’s about it! At least for stuff I’m aware of, lol.

Dall’Archivio Segreto Vaticano: il sigillo dell’abate Stefano del monastero di Santa Maria di Nardò

Nel corso degli studi presso l’Archivio Segreto Vaticano ho approfondito le mie ricerche su due argomenti di particolare interesse: l’Ordine Equestre del Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme e la diocesi di Nardò.

E proprio otto anni fa, nella preparazione di una mostra sull’Ordine del Santo Sepolcro, studiando le descrizioni di alcuni sigilli pontifici ho visionato un autorevole testo dal titolo I Sigilli dell’Archivio Vaticano, a cura di Pietro Sella con la collaborazione di M.-H. Laurent, (1) in cui sono descritti i sigilli conservati nel fondo Archivum Arcis.

In particolare nella sezione degli Enti e delle Persone Ecclesiastiche mi sono imbattuto nella descrizione di un sigillo di notevole interesse storico per la diocesi neretina: il sigillo dell’abate Stefano.

Sin da quando ho iniziato a frequentare l’Archivio Segreto Vaticano, oramai da circa sedici anni, ho spesso cercato, non senza difficoltà, nel corposo Archivum Arcis, perché in esso sono raccolti documenti di particolare importanza storica.

Ho sempre saputo, leggendo i numerosi libri riguardanti la storia di Nardò, che le notizie riguardanti l’abate Stefano sono vaghe e spesso non supportate da fonti documentali. Per questo motivo ho approfondito la ricerca, individuato la segnatura del documento e visionato il documento originale.

E’ un documento cartaceo con sigillo in cera del 16 luglio 1325 che misura mm. 215 di base e mm. 143 di altezza.

Si tratta di una lettera dell’abate Stefano che notifica all’arcivescovo di Capua, Ingeramo Stella, che è stato letto e pubblicato a Nardò il processo del papa Giovanni XXII, Giacomo Duèse, di Cahors (1316-1334), (2) contro Ludovico IV il Bavaro.

Ludovico IV, imperatore del Sacro romano impero e re di Germania, venne eletto al soglio imperiale ma fu costretto a combattere contro Federico III d’Asburgo, il quale fu da esso sconfitto nella battaglia di Muhldorf nel 1322. Il papa Giovanni XXII si rifiutò di incoronarlo imperatore, sostenendo che spettava al pontefice la decisione sulla questione tra i due pretendenti al trono; gli impose pertanto di rinunciare alla corona e, al suo rifiuto, lo scomunicò.

La diocesi di Nardò, dal 1090, passò sotto la giurisdizione degli abati benedettini che sostituirono i monaci basiliani nella direzione del monastero e della chiesa di Santa Maria de Nerito. Dagli storici, in alcuni testi, nella successione cronologica di tali abati, è indicato l’abate Stefano per il periodo 1307-1324 (3); in altri testi, e soprattutto nel Chronicon Neritinum, si indica e precisa, altresì, il 1324 come data della sua morte (4).

Diversamente, il documento di cui alla presente trattazione, attesterebbe che l’abate Stefano, nel 1325 era vivente e ricopriva ancora l’incarico di governare la diocesi neretina.

Ad ulteriore conferma di ciò, ho ritenuto di fare ulteriori verifiche sull’autenticità del contenuto della lettera, peraltro confermata dalla presenza del sigillo in cera, ritenuto, a tutti gli effetti, originale.

Dalla Cronologia cronografica e calendario perpetuo di A. Cappelli (5) si evince che il papa Giovanni XXII, eletto il 7.8.1316, consacrato il 5.9.1316 e ad Avignone dal 14.10.1316, ha scomunicato Ludovico IV il Bavaro in data 23.3.1324.

Dallo Schedario Garampi, che costituisce ancora oggi l’unico indice generale per nomi e per materie della documentazione presente nell’Archivio Segreto Vaticano fin quasi a tutto il XVIII secolo, si evince che il processo contro Ludovico il Bavaro è stato pubblicato in data 7.7.1324 (6). Si legge testualmente: 1324 7 jul / Pubblicatio processuum contra Bavarum in Ecclesiam fratrum Praedicatorum de Capua.

Dalla Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, Monasterii 1913, si evince che l’arcivescovo di Capua, dal 1312 al 1334, è stato Ingeramo Stella, consigliere del Regno di Sicilia (7).

Infine, ho consultato, la Bibliografia dell’Archivio Segreto Vaticano sinora pubblicata, per verificare eventuali citazioni del documento in questione e, quindi, individuare gli studiosi che hanno utilizzato il documento per pubblicazioni.

Nel Vol. III, 1965, alla pag. 87 [A.A. ARM. C, 729 (A.A. Arm. C, fasc.52, n.10), Stefano abate del mon. di Nardò e la pubblicazione del processo contro Ludovico il Bavaro (17 luglio 1325)], risulta che il documento di cui sopra è stato consultato dallo storico G. Mollat (8).

Nel Vol. VII, 1997, alla pag. 122 [A.A. ARM. C, 729, Sigillo di Stefano abate di Nardò (1325)] dove è riportata la data 1325, lo stesso documento risulta essere stato consultato dallo storico P. Sella.9

Né il Mollat né il Sella hanno citato il documento in questione, per studi relativi alla diocesi di Nardò.

Si riporta di seguito la trascrizione della lettera scritta dall’abate Stefano all’arcivescovo di Capua, Ingeramo Stella, in data 16 luglio 1325.

Reverendo in Cristo patri domino Ingeramo Dei gratia archiepiscopo capuano. Venerabilis sibi Stephanus Dei et / apostolice sedis gratia humilis neritonensis abbas salutem cum recomendacione se ipsum. Noverit vestra / reverenda paternitas quod magister Iohannes de florentia clericus et familiaris vester legit et notificavit / nobis processum deposicionis Ludovicis ducis quarum licterarum principium est: Iohannes episcopus servus servorum etcetera / et finis ultimae litterae anno octavo quod eciam nos per nostram dyocesim fecimus publicari. Datum Neritoni/ die sestodecimo Julii octave indicionis.

Traduzione del documento

Al reverendo padre in Cristo signor Ingeramo per grazia di Dio arcivescovo di Capua, il venerabile Stefano per grazia di Dio e della sede apostolica umile abate di Nardò, saluta e si raccomanda. Sigillo di cera verde aderente, a navetta, mm. 60×38. Stato di conservazione buono (sigillo restaurato nelle parti mancanti), qualità dell’impressione discreta.

Tipo agiografico di devozione

Entro architettura gotica, la Vergine stante e coronata con il Bambino in braccio; nel registro inferiore, entro una nicchia, si scorge l’abate mitrato e orante, volto a destra. Leggenda tra filetti lineari.

Alla luce di quanto sopra, salvo smentite o possibile integrazione con documentazione sfuggita all’attenzione dello scrivente, ritengo che il documento esaminato nella presente trattazione sia originale ed inedito per la storia di Nardò.

Sarà, altresì, certamente utile per trarre ulteriori conclusioni sul Chronicon Neritinum, contestato dagli studiosi ma quasi sempre citato nella storiografia locale.

Rumbo al Sudamericano u18 en Sao Paulo

La ciudad de Sao Paulo (Brasil) - la más populosa de nuestra región- será escenario, entre este viernes 9 y el domingo 11 de septiembre de la 26a. edición del Campeonato Sudamericano u18, conocido anteriormente como "Sudamericano de Menores". Los mejores atletas de diez países se dan cita allí, varios de ellos ya fueron protagonistas del Campeonato anterior celebrado en Encarnación (Paraguay) en 2021 y de los Odesur para la misma categoría, en mayo pasado en Rosario. Los Sudamericanos de Menores estaban abiertos para atletas menores de 17 años hasta 1998, inclusive, y a partir del 2000 -a tono con los entonces Mundiales "Youth"- pasaron a ser para menores de 18.
