unpacking religious trauma as a Christian who still believes and deeply desires to remain in the faith feels so isolating at times. because like. how do you explain. yes I was taught some very fucked up things as a kid that I'm trying to undo and heal from but I'm not necessarily referring to all the things you think are fucked up. yes I still go to church even though I have a bodily stress response in every church building I'm in, because I seek God there and sometimes I find him and sometimes the devil is right on his heels. I can't tell you about my trauma because you will feel emboldened to mock aspects of my faith that I do not find traumatizing. I can't tell you about my trauma because you will tell me it didn't really happen like that. I love prayer and I dread prayer and I read scripture as often as I avoid it for fear of flashbacks. I am straining all the time to separate love from fear. at the end of it all I just want to see Jesus. I sound deranged to some and faithless to others. but I answer to God. yes, still.

sometimes i feel really connected to another person. and then i feel foolish for thinking such a thing with so little grounds to think it. i feel foolish. i wish we'd just say everything to everyone and didn't worry about being perceived the wrong way, seen in the wrong light. i. feel. foolish. i wish i could come up to you and say that you're cute and that i'd love to get to know you better. but instead i feel foolish and can't get the words out. what if you think i'm creepy? a stalker? and never want to be near me again? how would i recover from that, from becoming one of the things i hate the most? everyone would talk. i know you know it too. you're on everyone's mouths, but i want to talk to you.

I feel your Christian post so hard. It is so isolating to be stuck in the middle between people who want to make fun of you for being religious and those disappointed you're not religious enough anymore. Thanks for your post, it's nice to feel like I'm not alone all the time

“They were a product of their time” there were white abolitionists since the beginning of slavery in the United States and I am not giving my slave-holding ancestors a get-out-of-jail-free card when they absolutely had the ability to know it was wrong (or did and still chose to participate for their own benefit). We are all influenced by the popular cultural attitudes of our times but we all have the moral reasoning to know right from wrong and say that the prevailing beliefs of our times are unacceptable.
