Not often did you wake up in the middle of the night, yet something felt different. Maybe it was because there was a sudden lump that had developed within your pillow or the temperature in the room had changed, but your dream had slowly faded into darkness. As you adjusted to your senses and reality itself, your eyes fluttered open and caught a glimpse of Changmin in the dark.

Your eyes traced the silhouette illuminated by the moon, noticing his eyes wide and fixated on the ceiling. Unsure of both the time and if Changmin had noticed you, you scooted over to where he was and wrapped your arms around one of his, hugging it close to your chest.

“Why are you up?” you mumbled while tucking your nose behind his shoulder, wanting to remain as close as possible. 

Changmin turned his head to face you, slightly startled that you had woken up, but his parted lips of shock curled up into a warm smile—it was almost impossible to not be in love whenever he saw you. He pressed a kiss to the top of your head before shifting in his spot, adjusting so he could bring you into his arms.

“Why are you awake, hm?” He pulled you in close and against his chest, allowing you to snuggle up against him within his embrace. 

“I asked you first,” you retaliated. You gave him an exaggerated pout before having it interrupted with a yawn. He shook his head and laughed at you softly, his arms squeezing you. He then had one of his hands gently pat you on the head, providing a weak attempt to get you back to sleep.

“Just woke up randomly, and I couldn’t go back asleep,” he whispered.

“You better not be bullshitting.” He giggled at your grumble, causing you to shuffle your feet under the comforters and kick his legs when you found them. Changmin then burst out in laughter at your terrible attempt and refuted the action by locking his legs around yours, trapping you completely in his hold. 

Instead of fighting back, your tired state melted against him, but you still glared at him as a threat. 

“I’m not bullshitting, I promise.” Your skepticism made him coo and kiss your nose, watching as your bunched-up facial features began to relax.

“We sleep together?” Noticing your slight worry, he nodded and pressed a soft kiss against your lips to reassure you.

“We sleep together.”

It had taken less than a few minutes for you to knock out, but Changmin was still completely awake. He would play with your hair, tucking strands behind your ear, before his thoughts drifted off once more. He kissed your cheek with a whispered ‘I love you’ before untangling himself from you to glance at the ceiling once more. 

His eyes then trailed over to the nightstand by their bed, and without much thought, he silently pulled out the drawer to take out a small velvet box. He flipped it open to reveal the ring he had bought you and raised it to where the moon was shining, wanting to look at it one last time before officially getting down on one knee for you.

His heart thudded against his chest and fluttered the moment he thought about you wearing it on your ring finger. He smiled and put it away so he could go back to holding you, finally relaxed enough to fall back asleep.

You were his forever, and he couldn’t wait for tomorrow.

Noticing the playful sparkle in his eye completely gone, your heart stammers, skipping a beat. Stomach dropping, you jump to rescue. “Wait… you thought I was being serious?” 

Haknyeon shrugs, pouting for a second before a rosy tint flashes over his cheeks. “You sounded convincing…” he says, laughing. “Besides, it’s completely up to you if you wanna have kids or not, I was just a little taken aback–”

“Well, you were always very subtle about it.”

Looking up at the man you’ve been dating for the last 4 years, watching as his face morphs into pure wonder, your heart sores when you stare at his features for long enough– even after all this time. Sure, you two have been on dates– the title wasn’t established for a long time when you first started going out, though. For you and Haknyeon, you were just two people hanging out and enjoying each other’s company. 

The title of your relationship gained an official name as naturally as the seasons change– after many afternoons spent together doing various things, Haknyeon just asked you if you wanted to be his girlfriend. You agreed, no questions asked. It felt casual– it fit like a puzzle to the dynamic of your energies. You didn’t need big words or gestures. In the mundane reality of your lives, you two always had each other– without taking each other for granted, you both somehow always knew you were a given to each other. Both of you always knew you had the other person to fall back on– your security, your other half. There was no need for big words in a connection like yours. It just felt right. 

And yes, you do talk about everything. Most things, at least. But somehow, the topic of having children together hasn’t really come up seriously until now– only in passing, mentioning it as a matter of course for most relationships. You don’t blame Haknyeon for getting so serious at this moment.

“Yeah,” you say, voice soft and gentle. “Come on, Hak. I imagine spending the rest of my life with you, what makes you think having children isn’t in the equation?” you say, choosing to be serious with him for once. 

“I dunno,” he shrugs. “I mean, you were kinda right about the toilet paper thing, though–”

“I know, I know…” you sigh, “but I bet the oxytocin will get the job done.”

“Look at you using big biology words so suddenly,” Haknyeon jokes, making you roll your eyes and flick his chin.

“Be serious for once!” you laugh out, making the boy grin at your little outburst.

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry,” Haknyeon says, the pad of his thumb suddenly glazing over your cheekbone. The touch is tender, managing to cross the words always somehow left unsaid, yet always somehow understood– your brains and hearts on the same wavelength, buzzing at the same frequency– before your boyfriend casually drags out: “That’s good to hear, babe, ‘cause we’d make the prettiest babies. Would be a shame to let the good genes go to waste.”

“Tell me that,” you confidentially whisper. “They’d be mega smart too. They’d get that after me, obviously–”

“Hey!”

“I’m joking, I’m joking,” you laugh, shielding yourself from the hands of your boyfriend already reaching to give you a playful flick to your forehead again. “I do think we should wait a while before having children, though.”

“Not that I don’t agree with you, but why?” 

Hands blindly reaching for another strawberry to chew on, you watch your boyfriend easily pluck the fruit out of the basket and hold it up against your lips, helping you with your task. Thinking over your answer, picking out your words carefully, you chew and stare at the boy as he helps himself to a strawberry himself, the two of you gazing at each other in a fond silence.

“I think we skipped a few steps. We live together already, so that’s a start, but I’d like to get married before having kids,” you shrug, licking your lips off the watery sweetness, watching your boyfriend take in the new information.

Haknyeon hums, nodding to himself. “Makes sense,” he admits. “And when do you see us doing that?” he asks, genuine interest coating his saccharine voice.

“Not really sure,” you admit, snickering. “I haven’t thought about it much until now.”

“Hm,” Haknyeon hums in thought, the two of you staring at each other, chewing on your strawberries. There isn’t much contemplating behind your boyfriend’s words before he says them, but nonetheless, it doesn’t even catch you off guard– much like not many things do in your relationship. Somehow, you’re always perfectly synced. “Now seems like a good time, doesn’t it?”

“I mean… it doesn’t seem like a bad time, that’s for sure,” you shrug.

“We’ve been dating for a long time,” Haknyeon says, as if to further strengthen his argument. “Hell, I can’t believe Eric managed to get married before me.”

“Are you only saying this because your younger friend got married last month?”

“No,” Haknyeon says, although he sounds a little unconvincing. “But it certainly was a wake up call, in a way.”

“A wake up call?” you repeat, big eyes staring into your boyfriend’s soul.

“Yeah,” he agrees, “kinda realized when I didn’t see you catch the bouquet. A part of me was secretly hoping you would.”

“Stop being cheesy, Hak. That’s not like you,” you say, although there is something sweet, thick like honey, swirling in your stomach at his unusually rich wording. The male laughs in your face, enjoying the way he has you flustered with his confession.

“Would you do it, though?” he asks, grinning.

“What? Marry you?” you ask, raising your brows at him. “As in… right now?” you clarify, watching as the male purses his lips at you, seemingly thinking about it for a heartbeat.

“I mean, not right now, because we’d have to arrange the wedding and all, but yeah. Like, as soon as we can, is what I mean,” he says, dragging a stray hair out of your forehead.

Staring at him for a second, contemplating your next words, you feel your heart squeezing with something akin to excitement, your fingertips tingling with the reality upon you. “Ju Haknyeon… is this you asking me to marry you?”

“Yeah,” Haknyeon nods, shrugging. The whole situation is absurd– no one is down on their knee, no ring is present, no big events or confessions are taking place. Yet, the moment still feels perfect– it flows naturally into the trajectory of your life, makes total sense in the grand scheme of your relationship, happens unexpectedly, but doesn’t quite shock you in the tiniest way. It’s just another afternoon for the both of you– doesn’t matter that you’re taking perhaps the biggest decision of your whole life.

You don’t contemplate for even a second.

“Okay,” you say, watching the boy’s eyes light up.

“Okay,” he repeats, nodding. “Let’s do it, then.”

“Let’s do it,” you say, watching the boy beam down at you just like the sun, something in the air changing, yet, the two of you still stay the same.

Haknyeon takes your hand into his, opening your fist before he slips the keyring off the Tamagotchi onto your ring finger like it’s a promise, pressing the toy into the palm of your hand and making you hold it tight. His hand stays on yours when he leans down, lips crashing against yours, offering you all his love in the simple action. He tastes like strawberries and the past 4 years of joy. 

Faces close to each other when you pull away, Haknyeon talks confidentially into your ear. “We can go ring shopping tomorrow.”

“You better buy me a very expensive one–” you joke, cut off by your own laughter as the male gently bites into the tip of your nose, teasing you and making you frown, pushing him away with gentle force against his chest, right where his heart is.

Most things with Haknyeon aren’t planned, grandiose or romantic. Sometimes, you just take a step forward together, holding each other tight. You love each other in a casual way– the same way you know that when you wake up, there will be sun, and when you go to sleep at night, there will always be stars– you know that as long as you're alive, you and Haknyeon will always have each other. That’s the calm way in which you two love.

Just a little drabble to get you through your night, day or morning.

The morning sun hadn't yet peeked through the window yet but you were woken from your serene slumber when you heard the sound of the door open. Moments after you hear the click of the bathroom light and hear the faint sound of the shower. Your boyfriend had finally come home from work. As your eyes fluttered open and your somewhat blurry gaze fell upon the clock you were shocked to see the clock had struck 6 am.

6 fucking AM and he just got home, god they were completely working him into the ground and you hated it. Rather than go back to sleep you sat up in bed and pulled a book into your lap, you wanted to at least see him before he climbed into bed to sleep. As the minutes went by you felt as if time was moving along agonizingly slow, you just wanted to see your boyfriend and time was not on your side. Eventually you heard the click of the door and he finally stepped out in a white tee and shorts with a towel thrown over his head. As his eyes landed on you a smile immediately curls onto his lips.

“Good morning, beautiful.” He chuckles seeing how quickly you disregard the book and jump into his arms. As he showered you in kisses he slowly made his way over to the bed, taking a seat and sitting you in his lap. He loved the way you hugged onto him and nuzzled your frame into his.

“You’re up early aren’t you?” He peppers soft kisses on your head before brushing his thumb over your cheek.

“I heard you come in and I wanted to see you.”

“Is that right?” A cheeky grin decorated his lips at which you scrunch your nose up at him earning a laugh.

“Well thank you for waiting baby, but I’m off tomorrow which means you have me the entire day, no leaving out before you wake. This time I won't have to leave any letters. I’m all yours.”

“In that case, are you tired? Should we stay up and watch the sunset?”

“Mm anything you want to do baby, as long as I’m spending the morning with you.”

You find yourself shaking after grocery shopping, barely able to put away the groceries, when you feel arms wrap around you. You hear Haknyeon whisper, “What’s wrong, dove?” You shake your head, barely able to lift the milk, and he takes it out of your hands. Still holding you, he moves it into the fridge before closing it, “Why don’t you let me take care of this?” You give him a meager nod and refuse to leave his side, holding onto his shirt, and he looks back at you, “That bad, huh?” You nod, giving him a sniffle. And he grabs your hand in his, “Is this better?” You give him another nod, holding his hand tightly as he handles the rest of the groceries. When he puts the last can of corn away, he goes, “What happened?” You wrinkle up your nose and whisper, “I just felt useless. I was picking out groceries and trying to help someone, and it backfired. And I just… I don’t know… Well, I do. But…” He pulls you into his chest as you whisper, “Please don’t let me go.” You beg into his arms, tears falling from your eyes as Haknyeon wraps himself tighter around you. 

When your cries turn to sniffles, he moves both of you over to sit down. He sits you on top of his lap, letting you bury yourself into his chest as you calm down. “Why… Why isn’t it easy?” He hums and waits for you to continue, “Why can’t I just be like everyone else? And be able to go on adventures and see things without worry. Without fearing every second of my life outside of these four walls… Outside of your arms.” He runs his hand over your arm, slowly tracing it, “You’re not like everyone else. And it’s not a bad thing. You just have a different way of navigating the world.” You sniffle, “But why?” And he sighs, “I’m not sure. But it doesn’t mean you can’t have adventures.” You groan, “Yes, it does.” He lifts your chin up with the hand he was stroking your arm with, “No, it doesn’t. And y’know why?” You shake your head, not knowing why. And he gently tells you, “Because in a way you said I bring you safety. So, if I’m with you on your adventures, you can turn to me. And I promise to keep you safe.” You search his eyes and ask, “You mean it?” He hums, “For you? Always.” You sniffle, “Okay.” 

He smiles and kisses your cheeks, “I got you. I won’t let you fall between the cracks when I’m beside you. And even when we’re apart, okay?” You nod, and he wraps his arms tightly around your waist, keeping you grounded. While you focus on calming your heartrate by lying on his chest, he finds his phone ordering something as he softly sings you a song, “I ordered your favorite for later.” You hum, and he realizes you’re starting to fall asleep in his arms. He picks you up and takes you to your king-sized mattress, wrapping himself around you so you feel safe in his arms while you sleep. You two can safely tackle your adventures together sometime later. For now, a good rest and a delicious meal after would suffice.

Many aspire to have careers outside of their limitations, such as wanting to gain immense popularity or receive an income of seven digits, but your only want is to find a job you truly feel at home. It didn’t matter how many hours you would have to work or what time of day you’d have to show up—you grew up learning to appreciate what you could afford—as long as it made you happy.

You thought you were approaching that accomplishment at your newest job of being a waiter. Everything seemed possible—that you were potentially well-liked and praised, but that figment of your imagination was utterly shattered. From customers lashing out at you to your co-workers talking behind your back and rolling their eyes, all the pressure of you being the worst had built up. During your break, you would stash yourself into the further stall from the bathroom door and cry silently into your hands, your chest heaving as it struggled to understand why you were getting treated this way.

Nothing urged you more than to quit the moment you got home.

Yet somehow, throughout the busiest and most tormenting night of your life, you seemed to have forgotten the presence of your newly wedded husband. The moment you stepped inside your shared small apartment, Sangyeon’s tired state on the couch dissipated the moment he saw you. His slow blinks became rapid ones, forcing himself awake while he rushed over to you and greeted you with a hug.

What he didn’t expect was for his medicine—you—to shrug him off, tears pooling in your eyes as you kicked off your shoes.

“I’m going to quit.”

Your brain wasn’t functioning well enough to consider why Sangyeon was awake this late into the night or that you were heading in the direction of taking out all your frustrations on him. All you could think about was screaming at the world for treating you this way, crying until all the pain was gone, and never being passionate about anything again.

Fortunately for you, the love of your life knew you better than yourself. Despite being slightly startled by your outburst, he brings his hands to your hips, squeezing them in order to ground you.

“Tough shift?”

“More than tough,” you snapped. Your body was fired up with all the anger you’d accumulated over the night, yet you couldn’t find it in you to push Sangyeon away.

“They all looked at me as if I was worthless, Sang-...and I mean, you know…I don’t know-, maybe they’re right, you know? But that doesn’t mean they should-”

“Woah there, tiger,” Sangyeon murmured, cutting you off with the slight tilt of his head. His eyes would search your face, wondering how badly you were treated to be thinking this way. His mood matched yours with concern, the frown on his lips apparent after hearing yourself considering that you could potentially be worthless.

He kissed your forehead to soothe you, allowing you to settle your thoughts as he rubbed circles into your skin.

“How about we get you dressed for bed first, okay? Or a snack? Have you eaten?” The corner of his lips only deepened even further when you shook your head.

“Okay, then we get you something to eat first, then we get ready for bed so I can hold you and you can tell me everything that happened. Or if you don’t want to think about it, we could do something else together? Maybe play a game for a bit or talk about other things that make us happy? It would give me a chance to tell you all the things I love about you as you fall asleep, baby.”

You hated how quick you were to smile at his suggestions, shaking your head at him before hugging him close, wanting to remain as close as possible. Tears streamed down your cheeks as you thought about how grateful you were to have Sangyeon by your side at all times, never failing to comfort you.

“You’re spoiling me,” you mumbled. Your fingers played with the material of his shirt, rubbing it between the pads of your fingers as you sniffled into his neck.

“I love you, but let me finish, you dork.” He kissed the side of your head before continuing. “Then, no matter how late we sleep, I’ll be here with you in the morning to accompany you when you quit.”

Sangyeon reached for your hand, the one with your wedding ring, and interlocked his fingers with yours. He gave it a squeeze before pulling back to get a proper look at you. His other hand then met your cheek, allowing you to relax against his touch and feel the metal band rest on your skin as he made you look up at him.

“Does that sound okay?”

All the hurt and pain in your eyes faded when you gazed into his, unable to help but feel so light with love and reassurance.

“Thank you,” you whispered. His smile made your stomach flutter, like whenever he confesses his undying love for you. He was glad he could be your greatest comfort and distraction, wanting nothing more for the person he cherished most.

“You’re my everything.”

He found you out on the balcony as the sky turned a shade of red pomelo. In a few minutes, it would burn to the color of a mandarin orange as the sun began its trek into the sky to mark daybreak.

Ju Haknyeon would have stayed in bed longer had it not been for your absence. He rubbed his eyes between a yawn as he settled on the chair next to you and slumped his head onto your shoulder. Your hand found his hair, fingers gently scratching his scalp.

“What are you thinking about?” He asked quietly, shifting his head so his cheek pressed against your shoulder and you could watch the sunrise together.

You were quiet for a moment, considering. You massaged the words around your mouth with your tongue and attempted to string them together like they were individual letters in an alphabet soup. “I'm thinking that you're it for me.”

For a second, your words didn't fully register in his half-awake head. It was muddled and foggy, but then they became as real as you were. His heart galloped into full gear in his chest and it banged on his ribcage, begging to be let out. I'm thinking that you're it for me.

Your touch on his head was still as tender as it always was. “You're it for me, Haknyeon,” you repeated with more finality. It was not because you didn't think he heard or even misunderstood, but rather, for the sake of putting it out into the universe—this was it; you'd made your decision and you'd chosen your person.

He suddenly couldn't find his own words—any words—that might even begin to express how he felt. Haknyeon raised his head up from your shoulder, drawing your attention away from the imminent sunrise. He could even still see the sleep in the corners of your eyes, and there was no other moment in time that he wished to sear into his mind's eye to hold onto forever and ever.

“You’re it for me, too,” he said thickly. There was no other person he would rather spend the rest of his life with than you.

You smiled then. It was more beautiful than the rising sun at the horizon. It warmed his chest like a hearth, so full of love and contentment and adoration.

He reached for your hand and your fingers tangled with his until he couldn't tell his from yours.

Neither of you said anything else. Nothing else needed to be said. He just squeezed your hand, thumb grazing against the back of your knuckles, as the sun climbed up into the sky.
