My Absurd and Completely Justified Intellectual Crush on Simone Weil
Tumblr media
Look, I was just trying to write a chapter on the philosophy of waiting. That’s it. That was the assignment. A few wise quotes, a dash of Aristotle, maybe a Zeno paradox or two, and then boom, onto the next. But then she showed up. Simone Weil. The human black hole of philosophical intensity. The spiritual force of nature who sucked me into a rabbit hole so deep I came out quoting French existentialists and craving stale wartime bread.
Let me be clear: Simone Weil didn’t just study philosophy. She was philosophy. In a wool sweater. Probably with a half-eaten crust of something sad in one hand and a flaming critique of capitalism in the other. You don’t stumble upon Simone Weil. You get ambushed by her intellect, slapped by her moral clarity, and then find yourself weeping quietly into your tea while whispering, “She was so right.”
So who was this woman who turned waiting into a form of divine practice and casually redefined spiritual longing while most of us are just trying not to lose our minds in the line at Trader Joe’s?
Simone Weil was a French philosopher, mystic, factory worker (yep), and general overachiever of moral seriousness. She was born in 1909, had a full-blown existential crisis by age 5 (probably), and by her twenties was dominating the male-dominated world of philosophy while also marching with labor movements, teaching high school, and occasionally fasting in solidarity with oppressed workers. You know, normal hobbies.
She was fluent in Greek, Latin, German, Sanskrit, and humility. She had a brain like a diamond and the ascetic habits of a desert monk. When she decided to understand the suffering of the working class, she didn’t just read about it—she went and worked 12-hour shifts in a Renault factory and nearly destroyed her health in the process. Again, I eat one questionable taco and need a nap. She redefined moral commitment.
Weil treated attention as a spiritual act. Not in the, "try this new mindfulness app" way. No, she meant radical, undivided, ego-crushing attention. She believed that true attention was the path to grace—that waiting with your full being, without trying to control the outcome, was a kind of prayer. A spiritual stillness in a hyperactive world. She once said, “Waiting patiently in expectation is the foundation of the spiritual life.” Meanwhile, I lose my religion when my AirPods won’t sync in under 10 seconds.
And yet, she wasn’t preachy. She was intense but not sanctimonious. Her moral compass was so painfully precise, it made everyone else look like they were just spinning in circles on a Segway. She turned down an academic career. She turned down comfort. She turned down eating, apparently, which is how she died—refusing food in solidarity with those suffering under Nazi occupation. That’s not a metaphor. That’s just... Simone.
There’s something absurdly admirable about her. Like, imagine your most principled friend. Now multiply their moral consistency by 10,000, add a degree in ancient Greek tragedy, throw in some political rebellion, a dash of mystical Christianity, and subtract all sense of self-preservation. Boom. Simone Weil.
Do I have a philosophical crush on her? Obviously. Does she terrify me a little? Also yes. She makes most of us look like distracted raccoons trying to meditate while holding a fidget spinner. But that’s the point. Weil doesn’t just raise the bar. She reminds you the bar exists.
So next time you find yourself stuck in line, or on hold, or waiting for a dream to land that’s taking its sweet cosmic time, consider Simone. Waiting, she would say, isn’t wasted. It’s a discipline. A devotion. An invitation to something deeper than instant gratification. It might even be the doorway to grace.
And if that doesn’t work, well, she also would’ve been fine with you standing there muttering in existential frustration. Just do it with intention.
