What is JPG? Jpg File Extension What Is It For, How To Open It?

JPG is simply an image file. Some image files are .JPG, some image files are . JPEG file format is used. There is not much difference between JPG and JPEG file types. Because they both refer to files of the same type. It is possible to convert the JPG file to different image file types.

A portion of JPG images  may contain the .JPE file extension. People rarely encounter them, as the .JPE file type (preferred for images with a lot of color) is not very common. The same is  true for the .JFIF file type. Briefly, .JFIF files (JPEG File Interchange Format) are seen as compressed JPG files.

What is JPG and when was it invented?

The JPG standard was standardized in 1992 after 6 years of work  . The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) started its first studies  in 1986 . Later,  the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) was established. This group has created a new standard called JPEG that uses data compression to keep image files small. 

The JPG file format  is widely used in the World Wide Web and  digital cameras . This file format is especially useful for internet users with slower connection speeds . In terms of photography, JPG files contain EXIF ​​information, which includes details about when the image was taken, settings such as exposure value and shutter speed  .

The reason why JPG files are widely used is because of the compression algorithm. The compression algorithm significantly reduces the size of the file. Therefore, it makes JPG files  easy to view, store and  share on the internet . When the JPG file is highly compressed, the quality of the image decreases.

Although JPG is very common, some programs and applications can cause problems. Programs may have trouble identifying it as a JPG file, especially when the file’s extension is .JPEG rather than .JPG  . In such cases,  it is necessary to change the file extension using basic image editing applications such as Paint .

What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?

The only difference between JPG and JPEG files is the naming. The file formats are exactly the same. Both JPG and JPEG are supported by the Joint Photographic Experts Group . The reason for the emergence of the JPG extension name is that some of the older versions of the Windows operating system do not accept long file extension names. 

When the JPG file format was first introduced, the official file extension was JPEG. However, the .JPG file extension is preferred over .JPEG, as Windows imposes a three-letter limitation on file extensions. Both .JPG and .JPEG file extensions continued to be used after Windows changed the requirements for file extensions.

How to open JPG file?

JPG image files are considered one of the most standard formats, among many different image file formats. The JPG file is supported by all desktop programs and mobile apps that can open and edit images. Since JPG is one of the most widely used image formats, there is no problem in support.

A JPG file  can be easily opened with the Photos app on  Windows  and Apple Photos on MacOS  . Also, the JPG file  can be viewed using web browsers such as Chrome  and  Firefox  . The JPG file format  is supported by standard gallery apps on mobile operating systems such as Android  and  iOS  .

How to convert JPG file?

When it is necessary to convert a JPG file to a different file type, two different ways can be preferred. The first way is to take advantage of a file conversion platform available online. Services such as CloudConvert or FreeConvert can be used for this . Through these services, JPG file can be converted to file types such as PNG, GIF, BMP, WEBP.  

Another method used to convert the JPG file is the classic method. First, you need to open the JPG file  with a program such as Paint, IrfanView or  GIMP . Later, the JPG file can be saved in a different file type by using the Save As features of these programs.

I saw a post about how good WEBP was, and I thought to myself, "maybe I've been unfair. I should give it a chance," so I translated all the hundreds of photos and GIFs on my Jellyfin server to WEBP to see what would happen. Here are the results:

PNG, JPEG, TIFF, GIF, etc: 2.12 GB

JPEG & GIF: 1.45 GB

WEBP: 1.28 GB

WEBP & GIF: 1.22 GB

For some reason, Shutter Encoder seems to break Animated WEBP files. Not only did it double their size, but it also prevented macOS or Firefox from playing them correctly, so I went back to GIF. It ended up saving more space, anyway

In the end, however, I'm actually really surprised. Using WEBP allows me to preserve a lot of my photos in Lossless compression, all while taking up less space than my current, total JPEG, 100% Lossy setup. WEBP, especially for data storage and server management, actually seems to make a lot of sense, and I'm probably gonna end up using it for the files on my Jellyfin server from now on.
