#JoyceBryant kicks off my celebration of Black Beauty for the month of February! 🤩 This Queen is still here with us at 93 years old. ❤️ She was also known as “The bronze blonde bombshell” and “the black Marilyn Monroe”. Her stage personality and career were provocative and exciting! Her dresses, made primarily by #ZeldaWynnValdes, an African-American designer, were revealing and so tight supposedly she had to be carried off stage when finished. Her hair was painted silver and her sultry voice and sensual songs such as “Love for Sale,” and “Drunk with Love” captivated club audiences but were banned from radio play. In 1955, her career abruptly ended. After a performance she was physically assaulted because she refused sexual advances. The incident soured many of her fans and tainted her provocative public image. She also abused prescription pills in order to sleep, her hair was damaged from intensive coloring, and she had to resort to wigs after a disastrous bleaching. By the end of 1955 when her multiple performances had exhausted her throat, a doctor suggested spraying cocaine to soothe the pain even though the procedure might make Bryant addicted. Her manager urged the doctor to do it regardless of the risks or Joyce’s feelings. At age 28, Bryant walked away from her entertainment career and enrolled in Oakwood University, an historically black, Seventh Day Adventist college in Huntsville, Alabama. Black women have been through so much. This morning on #teaandwildthoughts👄 I talked about “The Sweetness of Surrender” . This Queen is a shining example. Her decision to choose her probably lengthened her life. There is a lot to learn from her story. Life happened. She found the beauty. Check out the convo in my previous post. More on my #IGTV. ❤️ in part from black past.org #blackherstory #blackhistory #thebeautyinfluencer #listentoblackwomen #joytaughtme💋 #blackbeautyblogger (at Joy University) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKy7SqCBv1O/?igshid=1nnvqw20k9hw0

The Story of Joyce Bryant #JoyceBryant was considered "The Black #MarilynMonroe" and called "The Bronze Blond Bombshell." She is singer and actress who achieved fame in the late 1940s and early 1950s as a theater and nightclub performer. She was called one of the most beautiful #blackwomen in the world and regularly appeared in magazines like #Jet. A #Life magazine layout in 1953 depicted the sexy singer in provocative poses. (born Oct 14, 1928 - alive and well at 91 today) Her act was outrageously sexy; she wore provocative, tight, backless, cleavage-revealing mermaid dresses that left little to imagine and they were so tight, she had to be carried off-stage. Supposedly, #Bryant twisted so much she lost four pounds a performance. Bryant, was the oldest of eight children. She was a quiet child raised in a strict home and had ambitions of becoming a sociology teacher. Born in #Oakland, #California and raised in #SanFrancisco to a mother who was a devout #SeventhDayAdventist. She eloped at age 14 but the marriage ended that same evening. In 1946, she left home to live with her cousins in #LosAngeles, she agreed on a dare to participate in an impromptu singalong at a local club. Bryany said: "A few minutes later the club owner offered me $25 to go up on stage, and I took it because I [needed the money] to get home." From there, she picked up other gigs and built a strong reputation. Bryant’s hair was naturally black, but not wanting to be upstaged by #JosephineBaker at a club, she doused it with silver radiator paint, slithered into a tight silver dress and voila: the Bronze Blond Bombshell and even Baker was impressed. Her sexy act and Bryant’s elastic voice elevated the singer to heavyweight status; she earned as much as 3,500 dollars a gig and 150,000 dollars a year in the early ’50s. Around 1952, she recorded a series of 78s for OKeh Records with the Joe Reisman Orchestra. Two of her most well-known standards, "Love for Sale" and "Drunk with Love", were banned from radio play for their provocative lyrics. Fashion and costume designer Zelda Wynn Valdes may be the most famous American designer you’ve never heard of, yet you’ve most certainly seen her work. Starting in her uncle's New York tailoring shop, she went on to be the first African American designer to open a shop on Broadway, "Chez Zelda” in 1948. The following year she would help found the National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers, an organization which aimed to bring black professionals to the national fashion stages (seeing as similar industry groups of the time excluded people of color). With a skill for accentuating the female figure with curve-clinging designs, she attracted star performers including Dorothy Dandridge, Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, and Eartha Kitt. Her form fitting creations caught the eye of Hugh Hefner who commissioned her to create the iconic Playboy Bunny hostess outfit for his clubs in 1961. From 1970 to her death in 2001 she worked as the costume designer for Dance Theater of Harlem. “I just had a God-given talent for making people beautiful,” Zelda said during a 1994 interview with The New York Times. As part of Black History Month we're spotlighting a few lesser known names that have contributed to American fashion. Day 9 of #sketchaday: Joyce Bryant (aka: "The Bronze Blond Bombshell"), jazz singer and nightclub performer, known for her signature silver hair and mermaid dresses. After she left the industry, she used her fame to fight against racial inequality and to help the black community during the Civil Rights Movement. She returned to singing and went on to tour with the New York City Opera, and eventually became a vocal instructor. #joycebryant #drawing #sketching #coloredpencils #pcrcomics #pleasecupcakeresponsibly
