A Poem by Josiah Harlan:
How sweet that rose in form so fair and how its fragrance scents the air, with dew or spread as early as morn, I grasped it but I grasped a thorn.
How strange thought I so fair a flower, fit ornament for lady's bower, emblem of love in beautiful form should in its breast conceal a thorn..
(written when the love of his life had the audacity to marry another man after Josiah left for over a year)

Cabul, the city of a thousand gardens…

Cabul, the city of a thousand gardens...
A passage by Josiah Harlan
The evenings, when the weather permitted, were passed in a beautiful flower garden. We sat on a low terrace illuminated by a large lamp. During the season of full bloom, the position was surrounded by an invisible and delightful fragrance of the ever wakeful foral nature; the intoxicating perfume of the rose, the spicy pink breathing of sweetness, and the flood of grateful odor that bathed the senses from the enchanting "shubboo."
The genial air of midsummer, tempered by the everlasting Alps of permanent snow near the valley, gratefully clothed our nocturnal hours in a voluptuous mantle of serene repose.
The music was three too, fitful, frantic, or pathetic, as the feast of reason and the flow of soul invoked its mysterious influence which,
Softly sweet in Persian measure,
Gently soothed the soul to pleasure.
Cabul, the city of a thousand gardens, in those days
was a paradise far removed from the agitating scenes of life away from the world. In the remotest mountain glens and vales of the frosty Caucasus," devoted to the fairy conceptions of imaginative romance, there the soul of love sighed not but luxuriated in the delicious exuberance of ideality, and associated in fellowship with the nightingale, whose only dream was of carnation roses and Cupid gamboling in a bed of pansies, and who sang so sweetly in her vesper song of never dying happiness in love's uninvaded bower.
And I have seen this country, sacred to the harmony of hallowed solitude, desecrated by the rude intrusion of senseless stranger boors, vile in habits, infamous in vulgar tastes--the prompt and apathetic instruments of masterminds, callous leaders in the sanguinary march of heedless conquests, who crushed the feeble heart and hushed the merry voice of mirth, hilarity, and joy.
Josiah Harlan
This passage is from Josiah Harlan's memoir "A Memoir of India and Avghanistaun," published by J. Dobson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1842, the end of the First Anglo-Afghan War.
Josiah Harlan (1799-1871) was an American military advisor for Shah Shuja Sadozai (1785 –1842), grandson of Ahmad Shah Durrani and later Amir Dost Mohmmad Khan Muhmmadzai (1793–1863).
Harlan illustrates a comforting, peaceful, and prosperous Kabul a few years before the British invasion and the installation of his ex-employer Shah Shuja Sadozai. In the last paragraph, Harlan writes his disdain for the invading British army that crushed the tranquility of Kabulistan, for which it never recuperated.
Notes
"shubboo" گل شب بو is the gillyflower mentioned for its nightly fragrance.
Harlan, born near Philadelphia, was a Quaker who disapproved of music, disliked consumption of alcohol, and was an abolitionist. He died in San Francisco, California.
Imagery: A detail from 'The Gardens of Fidelity' (Bagh-i Wafa)' being laid out at Kabul (1504), from "Vaki'at-i Baburi," the Memoirs of Babur, translated from the Turki original by Mirza' Abd al-Rahim, Khan-i Khanan, circa 1590.

1) @windermeresimblr - Yes, I am with you on those choices.  I went back and plowed through all of my hair again and I keep coming back to the “Jamie” (the first one you mentioned) and another short hair that I think I’m going to use on another sim probably.  It’s one of Haneco’s mashups.  I’ve got to get Justice into the studio and see if I like it better for him.  If not, I may put it on Josiah.
2) @wannabecatwriter - I know, right??? I think it is just because you can actually see more of his face and the hair doesn’t distract your eye.
3) @nornities - Haha!  Yes I think he is like Harlan with a permanent frown.
4) @andantezen -  Great suggestion!  It also led me into “weeping angel” statuary that have a similar mood.  @treason-and-plot - this kind of borders into your suggestion too.  I’ll see if I can add in some other “lounging” poses and particularly ones suited for a “lounger”!
5) @andantezen - Thanks for the movie clip!  You are right that scene really does evoke the same mood that my poses have!
6) @treason-and-plot Thanks!
I think I got everyone? Maybe?  Oh!  I missed one - @ktarsims - I’m glad your weather is being nice and mild. I  think my side of the country is getting all the weather right now.  I feel like I’m melting on the sidewalk every time I go out.  And YAY!  More storms tonight.

The Crimson Rangers
Tumblr media
Where would Robin Hood be without the aid of his Merry Men? Or how could Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid accomplish their heists without the aid of The Wild Bunch? Neither of them could have gotten as far as they did without the aid of their gangs and the same goes for Deadeye, legendary gunslinger or not. Deadeye's group, The Crimson Rangers are composed of rogues and mercenaries two hundred and fifty strong that bring their own sense of vigilante justice to the lands of Hell. Founded and led by the Ranger In Red, Deadeye, they are infamous for their skills in stealth, accuracy and deadly efficiency. Whether it is to steal from the rich to give to the poor, assassinate the malicious and monstrous or to simply lend their skills as the greatest gunslingers and sharpshooters in Hell, they are the guns for hire when quality is wanted more than quantity.
Wiley “Dust Devil” Jackson
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Jackrabbit
Age: 26
Division: Gunslinger
Rank: Sheriff
One of the fastest gunslingers around in both his time and the modern day, Wiley has always been quick on the draw, quick on his feet, and quick to run his mouth. Born as an orphan on the back alley streets of Boston, Massachusetts in 1860, the young outlaw began his path to banditry after he grew tired of the upper classes complete disregard to his existence and stole food from them to feed himself. Overtime, his quick hands and quicker feet would gather more than just food as he stole money, bullets and a gun, which finally got him in trouble after he used said gun to shoot a state marshal dead. With a bounty on his head at the age of 18, he ran off to the west, where he would only continue his life of crime by robbing stagecoaches and shooting strangers with a smile. His time finally came to an end when he entered a quick draw contest and attempted to draw guns against Johnny Harlan, who he discovered too late was just a bit faster.
Even after his death, Wiley refused to slow down his wild ways and continued his life of crime, unaware of all the attention he was drawing. When he crossed guns against a overlord who wanted him dead, he thought he was as good as gone until another gunslinger, cloaked in signature red, saved his life. Between feeling indebted to The Ranger In Red and wanting to be on the stronger side, he joined up with Deadeye's growing gang and was even promoted to the rank of Sheriff after his service in the Black Army Wars. Now in charge of the Crimson Ranger Gunslingers, he always skipping with a smile, running as fast as he talks, and ready to draw on just about anything.
Fun Facts About "Dust Devil"
. He has a tendency to be rather boastful about himself and his skills as a gunslinger. But if he can shut his mouth for two minutes and focus on the task at hand, many demons find out the hard way that he can back up his claims.
. Out of all the Crimson Rangers, he knows the streets of Pentagram City best, having grown up in a similar background.
. He's a pretty big fan of baseball, having spent most of his childhood playing baseball with the other orphans before his turn to gunfighting. Because of his years of practice, he is also the best thrower of the Rangers.

A soldier since adulthood and a sharpshooter since his first rifle, Old Doc may seem lazy, lofty and so paranoid he will never use his real name, but give him a reason to stare down a scope and he'll happily demonstrate why he leads the Crimson Ranger Sharpshooters. Born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1787, Doc joined the army at a young age and fought in many wars over the century, such as the War of 1812, the Texas-Indian Wars and the Mexican-American War, before entering the Civil War for the Union as he believed Mexico would be next, should the Confederates win. Being assigned into the 1st United States Sharpshooters Regiment, he lent his skills with his rifle to the United States and took control of the forces after his former captain, Josiah McGrath, was believed to be killed.
Although he was renowned for his sharpshooting prowess and professionalism, the horrors of both wars past and present began to take a toll on his mind as he began targeting anyone and everyone who even supported the Confederates, soldiers and civilians alike. His last fight would be at The Battle Of The Crater, as he was caught up with trying to shoot down another confederate when he was caught in a blast of cannon fire.
In Hell, Doc slowly began to cool from his soldiering days and often explored the many forests that laid through Hell before stumbling upon The Red Woods and even finding the son of his former captain, Cyrus McGrath who was now known as Deadeye. Helping the McGrath get back on his feet in an attempt to pay back Josiah, Doc was the first of The Crimson Rangers and even led them in the Black Army Wars, leading to his promotion to Sheriff. Even hundreds of years old, Doc doesn't plan to retire any time soon.
Fun Facts About "Rip Van Winkle"
. He's quite skilled with an acoustic guitar and doesn't mind playing the occasional song on his time off.
. Due to his laid-back personality, his years of wisdom and the occasional complaint about his old bones, he is often referred to as Grandpa Doc or Old Man. He doesn't really mind the old man nicknames. He does mind being called McGruff, however.
. His bloodhound form has made him a far better tracker than he was when he was alive. With enhanced senses, including a much stronger sense of smell, he can follow the trail of practically anyone.

Tacitus “Taci” Macello Andronicus, III
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Alligator
Age: 44
Division: Stalker
Rank: Sheriff
An quiet and silent enforcer to The Crimson Rangers, one may be surprised to learn that the giant in scales actually leads the Crimson Ranger Stalkers, something that they might find funny until they realized Taci is right behind them. Raised in New Orleans in 1846, Tacitus's human life is a subject he barely likes to touch upon. Aside from his past as a enforcer for a local gang and his death at the hands of a rival gang throwing him to the gators, not much else is touched upon in his tales of his past. But while his past may remain a mystery, his present in Hell is all well known.
After his death, Taci's was quick to rejoin his old gang, making a comfortable living off cracking open skulls and bashing in debtors who tried to swindle them. He grew so comfortable in his position, he would even believe himself unbeatable. But that attitude was all but lost when a new arrival in Hell, a maniacal fox who called herself Viy, sought to take claim over more than just the business. Even though Taci tried to end her reign of terror then and there, he underestimated the warlord's strength and was beaten to unconsciousness. When he next awoke, the hideout was burnt to ruins, the bodies of his allies laid scattered around him and he himself was taken as a prisoner. Enslaved and transferred to Camp Beznadiynyy, Taci was experimented on and tested on with many of the Black Army weapons in an attempt to get him to break to the warlord's will. But even after being a test subject for several years and the torturous process that left numerous unhealable scars all across his body and the lost of his left arm, he would refuse to break, clinging on to a hope that he can escape and crush that warmonger's throat.
While he would never get to deal with Viy personally, his hopes for escape were answered when The Ranger In Red attacked the camp and freed the prisoners inside, Taci included. After Deadeye got him to safety in his woods and even crafted a replacement arm with a hidden cannon from his father's blueprints, Taci felt indebted to the gunslinger and served with Deadeye in the Black Army Wars, even being promoted to Sheriff for his efforts. The gentle giant he may be, he will show no mercy to anyone he hunts.
Fun Facts About "Taci"
. There have been some rumors that Taci manages to keep his assassination targets hidden by eating them, bones and all. It's probably not true. Probably.
. His mechanical arm actually contains a few more nifty gadgets. His fingertips can shoot out .357 Magnum ammunition, his wrist can detach and shoot out with a chain, allowing him to grapple objects or pull targets to him from far away and by detaching his arm, he can fire a last resort cannon blast.
. Due to his crocodilian form and his own swimming skills, Taci does his best work in the water, being practically undetectable in the waves.

Jessie "Silver" McCoy
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Wolf
Age: 19
Division: Gunslinger
Rank: Deputy
While tales of The Reaper in Red struck fear and terror into the hearts of most who hear them, Jessie only found them awe-inspiring and hopeful. Born to a middle class family in Kansas, Jessie had always sought to separate him from the boring deeds of his family. He didn’t want to be known as some random farmer. He wanted his name on wanted posters, to be the next outlaw of legend. Going so far as to begin dressing up like a gunslinger, this wish for fame got him into a bad spot when a greenhorn bounty hunter believed he was the infamous Reaper In Red and forced Jessie to a duel, where he discovered his knack for the quickdraw just in time to shoot the bounty hunter dead. With the bounty hunter's death, Jessie found pride in his actions and left town to continue his life as an outlaw, even though he had no bounty. Despite his lack of experience, his talent for gunslinging was not only keeping him alive, it also brought a good amount of fame to his name. He might have become a legend of the west if not for the bounty hunter's younger brother, who stabbed the "outlaw" to death while his back was turned.
At first an aimless drifter in the afterlife, his actions as a gunfighter soon landed himself an audience with his childhood idol. But instead of greeting the Reaper In Red with the standard hostility, he left Deadeye confused as he went completely starstruck, going on a million miles a minute about Deadeye's past. While Deadeye was confused at the sudden attention, he found Jessie to be a reliable asset to the rangers, not to mention rather enduring that there were some people who actually liked him. So when the ranger offered a spot in his growing gang to the kid, Jessie joined on the spot with a grin on his face. Even after all these years, Jessie may still be as reckless as ever, but his persistence and talent have never once failed The Crimson Rangers.
Fun Facts About "Silver"
. Silver, by his very namesake, is one of the most charming and charismatic members of The Crimson Rangers. Because of his wordsmithing talents, he is often sent as the messenger and communicator to many deals with other demons or those who claim they wish to aid the rangers. And should his wording fail, he's got one hell of a gun hand to back himself up.
. Despite the form of a wolf, Silver is one of the kindest members of The Crimson Rangers, always facing every problem with optimism. However, during the rare times he actually loses his temper, he has a tendency to growl and bear his fangs.
. Having spent most of his childhood pouring through adventure novels and the like, he seems to be a bit genre savvy and tends to anticipates tropes that their targets would use in order to catch them.

Todd "Ranger" Clarkson
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Elk
Age: 20
Division: Sharpshooter
Rank: Deputy
Character Owned By: Ranger Todd
Out of the thieves and rouges in the Crimson Rangers, practically no one would expect to encounter a park ranger from the 80's. But don't be so quick as to laugh him off as the eye down the iron sights of his Winchester may be the last thing you never see.
What started as a simple summer job in Beaver Brook National Park quickly spiraled into a mysterious death trap for any poacher who dared to step into those woods. Park Ranger Todd Clarkson, who loved nature and wished to preserve it, often used his rifle to hunt poachers and those who disrespected the forest. While missing posters began to fly up on billboards and milk cartons, his fellow rangers never thought much on it until another park ranger discovered his hideaway shack, filled with evidence of the missing poachers. In his attempt to talk with Todd about the bodies, words were mixed up and a fight broke out. Although Todd managed to win, a fire had broken out in their brawl and gave Todd no time to react as he passed out from both his wounds and the smoke.
Todd would continue to stay near the trees and forests he grew attached to and was even bold enough to camp in the Red Woods, drawing the attention of the Crimson Rangers. While wary of Todd at first, the Crimson Rangers soon found his skills impressive after he aided in securing their home from corporate hands and offered him a place among them. With some refinement from Deadeye and Rip Van Winkle, Todd grew into a valued sharpshooter who now lends his rifle to the cause of The Crimson Rangers.
Fun Facts About "Ranger"
.  His hat was given to him by the love of his life just before he died, and it's his most sentimental possession.
.  Ranger dosen't keep pistols. He's confident in his ability to nail his target with a repeater at long range or short. And on the rare occasion he misses a point blank shot, he has even more confidence in his hunting knife.
. While a rarity, there’s a chance every now and then where he will cough up smoke. He’s not really sure why.

Kozō "Kage" Jirokichi
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Rat
Age: 41
Division: Stalker
Rank: Deputy
Originally a street rat from the streets of Kyoto, Japan, Kozō had grown to hate the taxes and laws that oppressed his people and sought to fight against the might of the local lords. His attempts to protest against the lords resulted in his branding and banishment, further dragging his name into the dirt. However, he was undeterred in his fight and instead snuck into the palace and ran off with their entire supply of gold. Working on his own, Kozō adopted a Robin Hood like persona, robbing the rich and sharing his wealth to the poor. He grew infamous for his exploits and managed to sneak and steal for fifteen years until he was finally caught and executed. Even though his intentions were for the greater good, thievery is still a sin and so he was dammed to Hell.
Upon arrival, Kozō attempted to fade into obscurity, but his actions had caught the attention of the overlords. They were worried they too would be robbed by the infamous thief and attempted to have him killed once again. But before one attempt almost claimed his afterlife, he was rescued by The Crimson Rangers, who he felt rather grateful towards as they were some of the first few people who showed him kindness since he landed down in Hell. Lending his skills as a thief, he was taken into their fold and has resumed his old life of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Just with the aid of more than himself.
Fun Facts About "Kage"
. The blade at his hip is the infamous Juuchi Yosamu, or 10,000 Cold Nights, that he stole from legendary swordsmith, Sengo Muramasa. The blade is so perfectly sharp that it is able to slice through anything as if it was passing through water, be it solid steel to even the air around him. While it is a incredible weapon, he finds it is also an incredible thieving tool since he can practically make his own entrances and exits.
. He is rarely ever far from a bottle of sake. While he usually keeps himself off the bottle until his task is complete, there are times where he will sneak a quick sip if things get too stressful.
. While he primarily speaks in Japanese, he can understand English fairly well and has been teaching some of the rangers Japanese in return. It's a slow process, but a process nonetheless.

Rosa "Bullet-Weaver" de la Costa
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Fox
Age: 28
Division: Gunslinger
Rank: Deputy
For Rosa de la Costa, life is as wild as you wish to make it. And if you must be the one to make it wild, you better leave a performance that will be remembered. A dashing pistolera from Mexico, Rosa life started out with a dream to see the world and indulge in every pleasure she could achieve through dance and song. But in a time before such things would become popular and where those who reached fame had to twirl guns or be feared, life was often poor for Rosa who had to expand her talents to keep a stable income. Through a combination of dancing, singing and sleeping with anyone who paid every now and then, she had begun to earn a name for herself, short as it was yet enough to live a life of comfort and carefreeness. Of course, this life wouldn’t last forever, much to her dismay. But a richer, more exciting one would be drawing near as one night, she was accosted by three thugs, a gaggle of foul-mouthed morons who were interested in a free performance and were not looking to hear a no. But when they fired upon her after a rather violent refusal, the dancer was miraculously unscathed from the flurry of bullets, leaving her bewildered and amazed. Even more so as she stole a pistol from them and fired three rounds in their heads, despite never even holding a gun before. For Rosa, this was a sign that her life was meant for more, a sign to be something greater. And with three men dead and her being the only witness, she was eager to leave her old life behind anyway. Over the next few years, tales of the Bullet-Weaver were spread far and wide, a queen among gunslingers who no bullet could touch. She was feared for her pistol work, beloved for her beauty and skills, and was proud of the reputation she had earned. But she had attracted more than just looks as she found out too late one night when a handsome stranger she had taken to bed revealed himself to be a bounty hunter. And while no bullet could ever touch her, the hangman's noose certainly could.
She may have known exactly where she was going in the afterlife, but she had no idea it was going to be so alive and vibrant, especially in Pentagram City. Putting her pistols aside for the moment, Rosa spent her early years lavishing in her original dream, finding fame and fortune as a lounge singer. But even though she had found a life of comfort, she found it rather boring and uneventful. Every day was a song she knew and every want was taken care of in tandem. The life of a wandering pistolera had left quite the impression upon her and she ached to return to the life of adventure once more. But with the end of gunslingers approaching and more advanced guns being forged, she felt as if it was a dream she couldn't reach. She felt she was now stuck in her afterlife until one of her fans, a certain jackrabbit who knew about the pistolera, was more interested in her skills with a gun instead and invited her to join The Crimson Rangers. Finding comfort, safety and familiarity in the Crimson Rangers, Rosa has since become a valued member of the gang, even teaching them her ways of evasion. At least to anyone who can keep up.
Fun Facts About "Bullet-Weaver"
. She may no longer practice prostitution, but the attitude for it never left her. She’s not above using her charms to seduce her targets, loves a good dirty joke and tends to flirt with just about anyone and everyone.
. Though her skill with guns is as good as any ranger, she’s also quite skilled in the capoeira marital art, often getting through every fight with flare and grace.
. The red bandana she wears was a gift from the first man she ever grew to love. While his name has now been lost to her, the bandana remains as a treasured possession.

Holly "Iron Maiden" Mayberry
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Horse
Age: 35
Division: Sharpshooter
Rank: Deputy
While she is now known for her tough-as-nails personality and unwillingness to take anything lying down, There was a time in Holly’s life where her only wants were raising a family and living a life of home and comfort. But that dream has long since died.
Formerly a loving wife to Eric Mason, a local cowboy in Marble Falls, Texas, her former life was taken from her after the recently appointed sheriff took an interest in her. Even though she was married and completely uninterested in such a vain and callous man, he cared not of her concerns and wanted to make her his, no matter how. And when one of his attempts earned him a black eye from Eric, the sheriff twisted his sentence from assault to attempted murder and sentenced him to hang. Seeing her husband hanging from the gallows brought something cold and vengeful in her soul as she used the sheriff’s feelings against him, brought him out to Eric's grave and murdered him with her bare hands before giving one last goodbye to her husband and running out of Marble Falls as fast as she could. Bringing Eric's killer to justice brought a sense of belonging that left an impression on the widow as she decided to pick up a line of work she knew would both be bringing in money and the feeling of vengeance being dealt: bounty hunting. Over the next years, her true talents began to shine through the veil she had once believed she had to be. With either rifle or revolver, her skills as a shootist made her into a force of nature and a fearful sight to any bounty she chose to pursue, even managing to match the best bounty hunters in the west. However, her final target, the infamous Johnny Harlan was never claimed as she was shot and killed by rival bounty hunter and inside man of The Outlaws, Graham McKendrick.
At first, she was a bit distressful where she had ended up. But she knew there was no undoing what was done now and continued her bounty hunting ways. Incidentally, one of her bounties, more specifically the bounty on Doc, led to her recruitment into the Crimson Rangers after finding their ideals appealing to her need to dismantle the corrupt people in power. Finding no reason to doubt her or her excellent sharpshooting skills, she quickly became a welcomed addition. And while she mostly keeps her outlook of stoicism and bluntness, there's been the occasional smile on Holly's face since joining the rangers.
Fun Facts About "Iron Maiden"
. Her eyes are a bit sensitive to light and, as a result, are why she often wears a pair of sunglasses. While she's went through many over the years, her favorite are a pair of aviator shades.
. Her hat and lever-action Winchester rifle, Ol' Hickory, were the last gifts from her husband before they parted long ago. She refuses to let another soul lay so much as a finger on either.
. Holly has a weakness for similarly tough women and tends to get a bit flustered around them.

Roblyn "Huntress" Valencia
Tumblr media
Demon Form: Chicken
Age: 27
Division: Stalker
Rank: Deputy
While many have the choice to become a criminal or not, this wasn’t the case for Robyn Valencia, daughter & heir to the Valencia mafia family. Born between the union of mob boss and leader, Alessio Valencia, and a former mistress of his, Robyn had spent her whole life learning the skills of a criminal and was personally taught by both her father and the members of his growing gang. Despite their infamous reputation, she never saw them as villains as they treated all with the upmost respect, especially her and her father. She grew to carry a great respect for her father and his trade, finding their work powerful and practical, even growing proud how one day it would all be hers. That day came sooner than she would have liked when her father was killed by a shot in the back after he attempted to duel a swindling gambler in white. She wished to avenge her father by tracking his killer, who had fled to the United States, and began a promising start to her family by expanding their work to the San Francisco area. When she learned that her father’s murderer had been killed by a so called “Reaper In Red”, her fury grew restless and disastrously as she attempted to take on The Reaper In Red. But her attempts to kill him ultimately resulted in her end after a risky chase across the city rooftops caused her to miss a step and fall to her death, leaving her gang without a leader.
For the first few years, her afterlife was spent in waiting, doing hit jobs here and there to improve her skills. And when The Reaper in Red finally died, she attempted to try again on Cyrus's life, who had long since calmed from his more murderous days as The Reaper in Red. Even though he had retired from his murderous persona, he managed to win once more but wanted to put away his past and chose to spare her. This left Robyn in a state of disbelief and revaluation of both her afterlife and what had led here. When tales of The Crimson Rangers began to surface around Hell, it was surprising for Deadeye to see her again, especially hearing that she wanted to join them. Her reasonings remain a mystery but she joined the gang and slowly began to move on from her past. Finding a home with the Crimson Rangers, she decided to stay and has stuck with them ever since.
Fun Facts About “Huntress”
. Huntress was one of the first benefactors of The Crimson Rangers as her ties to the Valencia family remain strong and loyal. In exchange for turning a blind eye to her family, she has supplied the rangers with plenty of soldiers, hundreds of weapons and a whole lot of money for whatever else is desired.
. Huntress is prehaps the coldest member of the group, but there is hints that the Crimson Rangers examples of selflessness are starting to rub off on her. Barely, but it's there.
. Do NOT make fun of her sinner form. Taking cracks at her appearance tends to never go well for whoever started it.

Words with letters afloat
Tumblr media
She devised a set of symbols – shantyboats, imported but now invasive species of fish, plants, and mules – to represent the negotiation of forces, good and evil, as seen in the historic setting of the Ohio River, on the riverbank, “a liminal site of liberation, revelation, pollution, and opposition.” It is germane that “The Point,” the nearest shoreline to Butchertown, was the traditional site of the shantyboats and their dwellers, often living a marginal existence, unable to afford more traditional housing or surviving on fishing, basket making, and harvesting mussel shells for pearls or button manufacture. Garner states that her work is “inspired by Harlan Hubbard’s insistence on a life of dignity and self-determination” and that her work “reflects on forces in opposition thereto.” The forcible destruction of homeless camps in the Butchertown neighborhood in the fall of 2018 profoundly affected Garner. I like very much Angie Reed Garner’s labels for her exhibition, “Shantyboating,” at the garnernarrative contemporary fine art, until March 29th. Labels should be short and concise, more like a tweet than a tome. Labels should be written with a vocabulary that is within reach of the majority of visitors. Label design should reflect the label’s content or context and be part of a recognizable system of label types. Labels that ask questions should be visitors’ questions. Labels should know their audience and address visitors’ prior knowledge, interests and/or misconceptions. Labels should emphasize interpretation (offering provocation) over instruction (presenting information). Labels should relate to the big idea of the exhibit, not ramble without focus or objectives, or contain sub-sub-subtopics. Labels should begin with concrete, visual references to the objects they interpret to bring them to life. Serrell covers everything from “making words and images work together” to “production and fabrication.” Serrell’s Ten Commandments” of labels are common sense guidelines that are very frequently ignored: The core text on the subject is by Beverly Serrell, Museum Labels, An Interpretive Approach (Second Edition, 2015). But current museum opinion is strongly in favor of labels, especially labels that contextualize a work of art and engage the viewer, often with questions that serve as pathways into a work. My first art museum mentor, Agnes Mongan, disliked all explanatory labels because she believed that they distracted from a deeper contemplation of the work of art, and viewers’ openness to their own discoveries and personal associations. Some contemporary artists, like Josiah Mcelheny, have effectively borrowed the authority of museum labels to tease out profound issues of the interaction of modernist templates and their presumed dependence on platonic ideals. What a pity that there is not more often humor in museum labels! The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles is an outlier in doing a good job in this regard. “A maenad is greeted by two satyrs, who are obviously excited to see her.” “In the beginning, shortly after God created heaven and earth, man and woman, there were stones to throw and sticks to swing.”Ī second favorite was at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the 1990s, in the Department of Classical Art, but long since taken down: it accompanied a 5th Century BCE Greek kylix krater, depicting two ithyphallic satyrs greeting a voluptuous maenad: My favorite museum label of all is at the start of the historical text at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York:

“My family calls me JayRay but thats mainly my momma and my granddaddy. They really just combined my first and middle name.”

Part II: Tell Us More About Yourself...
8. How would you describe your personality?
“Im not really sure, to be honest. Mostly I try to do all things with kindness and grace but I fail more often than I’d like to admit. Im slow to anger but when I do get there, I am not loud or hostile, just very mouthy. I am not afraid to fight for those I love and will not hesitate to put you down.”
9. Would you say you're someone who can handle pressure?

10. Do you like to read?
“Yeah, absolutely. I learn a lot through books.”

18. One of your friends in Question 14 just insulted you. Response?
“I’d tell them to check their attitude before I have to do it myself.”

Passage and Images: Ghazni and Kabul 1830s
By Godfrey Thomas Vigne
Godfrey Thomas Vigne (1801-63), an English amateur cricketer and adventurer, traveled a few years before the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42) to the regions of Kandahar, Ghazni, and Kabul.
He observed a region that had ended close to two decades of civil war between the grandchildren of Ahmad Shah Durrani and the Muhmammadzai chieftains. The following passage and images were published in his 1840 travelogue book.
After Mortazu Khan's advice, I determined to proceed to Kabul by a way that he recommended and because no other Feringi [Westerner] had ever been that way before. I should see the Bunde-i-Sultan or Mahmud's dam and a copper mine, and I should find castles and villages the whole way, whereas, by the regular caravan road, there was nothing whatever to be seen, and scarcely any habitation.
I had followed the old Kuzzelbash's advice. Our road lay usually through a narrow valley that only wanted a few more trees to make it very pretty. Bearded wheat, barley, and clover were growing near the stream, and a village and a fort were generally insight, and on either side rose bare rocky mountains of granite, or limestone, from one to four thousand feet above the path. The natives were numerous but peaceable. There did not seem to be a sword or matchlock in the whole country.

I need this!!!
And you shall have it!   Just keep in mind, I’m a perfectionist sloth with the attention-span of a cat (you know - one minute fixated, the next meh, I can’t be bothered).  But it is really looking hopeful that I will actually publish them soon-ish!

Troy, Harlan, and Josiah for the male models, and Audra for one of the female models? I can see Audra as a paddleboarder, for some reason.
Troy and Josiah are definitely coming to this beach party.  Harlan and Jonah are taking a break from modeling.  They will make an appearance again when I get back to the spell casters and wands.  I’m totally on board with the Audra-as-paddleboarder vision.  I’m dusting off Kamilla (my usual avatar from the way-back), which means Nigel has gotta be there.
(And in fact, it was Kamilla and Nigel that kinda got the ball rolling on this theme. Way back in the 2014-ish timeframe, I made a pair of poses for them for a photoshoot.  I never published the poses back then, so better late than never!)
Since no one else has chimed in I guess I’ll do the picking on models.
SO... Troy, Josiah, Nigel.  Abel, Neal and Trent. And for the ladies, Audra and Kamilla.  And I’ll keep Maxwell, Donnell, Langston, Connie, Jillian and Raina on speed-dial as "extras”.  Keeping in mind I may alter them for the proper aesthetic for the photos.

The Outlaws
In the late 1800s, the events of the Civil War had left America in a less than civil state. Gangs popped up all over the west, from Billy The Kid’s Rustlers to the infamous James-Younger gang.
But lost to the recesses of history is the simply named group known as The Outlaws.
Former members of the Innocents, these seven individuals escaped the clutches of the Vigilante Committee that had hanged their leader, Henry Plummer. Without the advantage of numbers they once had, they were forced to rely on stealth and disguise to tackle their new scores.
But surprisingly, they found this method more beneficial than they did working with the Innocents. Trains were robbed, banks were picked clean and entire shipments of gold would disappear overnight with such delicate precision, no one even noticed they were being robbed until it was too late. And should a problem occur and blood was forced to be shed, they had no issue spilling it. With the mass amounts of money they collected and the twenty steps they had above the law, they would’ve made criminal history.
If it wasn’t for one misfired bullet.
When Johnny Harlan shot and killed Josiah McGrath and separated the group in an attempt to escape justice, little did he know he had inadvertently created one of the most terrifying gunslingers in all the west.
And that gunslinger, cloaked in red, was coming for him.
(Deadeye backstory, yay.)
Bill O'Malley, AKA “Buffalo”
The group’s muscle and strongman, Buffalo was often brought along to carry safes and gold bars out of their raids with as little noise as possible. Armed with a mighty axe and possessing incredible strength, he would’ve been a great challenge to the sixteen-year-old Cyrus McGrath.
If it wasn’t for his crippling addiction towards liquor.
The Buffalo’s love for whiskey, bourbon and everything else that’d keep him drunk was what kept him from leaving his favorite bar in Astoria, Oregon and Cyrus’s first step towards his path of vengeance. Using the money left by his father, he kept Buffalo talking with every bottle of booze. Cyrus kept buying drinks until Buffalo had ran out of things to say that were at least coherent. He waited until the strongman lifted his mug for another drink before shooting him right through the throat. As the patrons began screaming and running to the door, Cyrus fired another shot into Bill, one between his eyes.
He was the first of the soon to be many people that would fall to Cyrus McGrath.
Lucius “Luke” Winchester, AKA “Rabbit”
The Old Ship Saloon in the bustling city of San Francisco, California was often the prowling ground for gamblers and card sharks alike. Folks from all walks of life would saunter into this fine establishment, ready to test their luck and make their fortune.
And no man was better at this lifestyle than Luke Winchester, known to the criminal underworld as Rabbit.
Rabbit was the Outlaw’s lucky charm. Whether it’s a high stakes tournament game of poker or a simple need for the charismatic gentleman, the group would all turn their heads to the white-suited man.
But luck was not with him the day Cyrus McGrath walked into the saloon.
The eighteen-year-old boy seemed to be spare change for the master gambler but accepted the boy’s place at the table as the man was rather incompetent at games of luck.
Round after round, the gunslinger continued dealing bad hands and terrible moves that were completely ridiculous.
By the end of the game, Rabbit was staring at $300 on the table with such unbridled glee, he wasn’t even attempting to hold back his smug nature.
Because the gunslinger was such a good sport, Luke offered $50 for a ride home, which he thought was a rather generous notion. But the gunslinger shook his head and asked for a different consolation prize.
“Your life.”
And before Luke could react to those words, Cyrus spun around with a revolver in his hand and fired a round right between Luke’s eyes.
The people only looked on in fear as Cyrus began walking out the door, watching from the corner of his eyes as Luke fell upon the table, still clutching his bloody cards of two eights and a pair of aces.
Miss Katherine “Kitty” Jezebel, AKA “Cat”
The Storyville district of New Orleans, Louisiana is where all manner of sin was once practiced. Drugs and pickpockets were plentiful on those roads but the most frequent vice were the brothels that lined those streets more than homes and businesses. It’s mostly abandoned nowadays but back then, if you had the money, the workers in those districts were all the more happy to make your story a whole lot happier. But one of those businesses would be the center of a tragic tale.
Miss Katherine Jezebel, or The Cat, was once the thief & seductress of the Outlaws. When charm, grace and the promise of a one night stand was needed, she would slip in and out of any bank or train with the loot in her arms and a lot of explaining to do for the guards.
But when she wasn’t the master thief, she went by Miss Kitty, the rather gracious owner of the once luxurious Rose Garden brothel. Like other brothels owners, she was rather sweet on those who took to this way of life. Her girls were paid well, she’d never turn away anyone looking for work and any creeps or perverts who wanted a free showing were dealt with a warning shot.
But Miss Kitty often found disappointment in her business as her girls were always chosen instead of herself. For Kitty, the only people who’d come looking for her were rather out of touch aristocrats and very dull city officials. The same expected people and the same group of customers had grown irritable over the years with the same expected results: boring and unsatisfying.
So in 1896, when her latest client wasn’t some stuffed up aristocrat but rather a twenty-year-old stranger in red, she didn’t feel the need to turn him away. While he wasn’t the epitome of handsome or mannered, his rugged appearance, mysterious and dangerous style and interest in her skills certainly had her attention. When he asked for her “service”, she brought the man upstairs and proceed with their “business”.
But unfortunately for Katherine, The Stranger In Red was more interested in revenge as she found out a little too late when he pulled a gun on her.
Katherine’s death would not go unnoticed as many of her former clients set warrants out for who the presses were calling “The Reaper In Red” with a few of her old flames picking up their pistol belt to avenge their lost love. Despite their efforts, the gunslinger shot through anyone standing in his way of vengeance and it wasn’t long before the marshes of Louisiana were long behind him.
Oswalt Dillinger, AKA “Vulture”
Before it’s closing in 1953, the Howard Athenaeum was one of the finest theatres in Boston, Massachusetts. Shakespearean plays were performed, symphonies were orchestrated and actors of all sorts made the first big break in those applauding halls. And no member of the audience was more frequent than Oswalt Dillinger.
To the public eye, Oswalt Dillinger was a renowned surgeon of unmatchable talent. His skills with a scalpel were greatly respected and had caused the “good” doctor to earn quite a mass amount of wealth that he used on charities, doctoral supplies and, his personal favorite, theatrical art. His love for the shows on stage had always brought him to the theater’s finest performances and it wasn’t surprising to find him at his box watching the event in glee.
But unbeknownst to the world, Oswalt was only a disguise. His real name had been lost to history but his alias, The Vulture, had lived on as a symbol many of the law could never catch. Appointed by the Outlaws as their personal doctor, he also made work as their contact with the black market. Whether it was a “spare” case of opium or a deceased patient’s internal organs, the doctor would trade these items for information on potential targets to rob. With a connection to a market where anything and everything had a price, the gang flourished in the trade, with him to thank as their sole supplier
But that was before the Reaper In Red.
By the 1890s, tales of The Reaper in Red and his vengeful crusade had been spread across America like wildfire. Paperbacks recounted the horrific stories of all who got in his way, regardless if they were lawmen or bandits. And the Vulture’s fears of the gunslinger were properly founded as three of his former colleagues were dead and buried in shallow graves. He hired bodyguards and mercenaries aplenty to watch his home at all hours, kept a squadron of four heavily armed guards with him whenever he ventured outside and kept his wits and derringer on him at every hour, regardless of laws or relative safety. The only place he lowered his guard was at his box in the Howard Athenaeum. Little did he know that the very box he considered the safest place on earth is where his doom would be waiting.
On March 15th, 1898, near the end of the Howard Athenaeum’s play of Macbeth, his viewing was interrupted by a sudden tapping on the door behind him. Despite his best efforts to focus back on the play, the knocks on the door continued on and on with aggravating frequency. Soon, he had enough and flung the door open to the ghastly sight of The Reaper in Red staring right back at him, with a horrific grin on his face and a Colt Single Action in his hands.
The audience’s attention quickly drew towards the booth when the blast of gunsmoke shot the Vulture out of the booth and into the audience below. As the people began panicking and racing from their seats, Cyrus only grinned at the trademark hole between the eyes.
César de la Rosa Clodoveo, AKA “Coyote”
By the beginning of the 20th century, stories about The Reaper In Red were abundant not just in the United States but in Mexico as well. Tales about bandits and lawmen falling at the hands of this mysterious gunslinger had managed to strike fear into the hearts of every man, woman, and child.
But César de la Rosa Clodoveo, mayor and sheriff of the Guadalupe, Chihuahua, only laughed at these ridiculous fairy tales.
Formally known as The Coyote to the Outlaws, César was the team’s main line for destruction and combat. Should a heist start going south or blood had to be spilled, it wouldn’t be long before his signature cackle would be echoing through the gunsmoke. With twin double-barreled shotguns and a passion for all things explosive, a simple job would turn into a massacre with him at the helm.
But his love for violence was only overshadowed by his love of his hometown. The beautiful streets of Guadalupe were once a place of warmth and welcome before the U.S Army invaded the town and drafted him into their ranks. Being rescued by the Innocents gang, he stuck with the newly found Outlaws until they were forced into hiding, where he returned back to his hometown and thanked the governor who sent him off by drawing out a double-barreled shotgun and firing both shells into the officer’s face. With the loss of their leader and a skilled combatant tearing through their ranks, the army retreated back across the border. With a rather unanimous election, César de la Rosa Clodoveo took charge of his hometown and remained in control for five years.
Until The Reaper In Red strolled into the city’s walls.
César was furious for what this man had done to those he considered friends. Four of his greatest allies were buried in shallow graves and their murderer stands at the center of his city. Determined to see his would-be killer hanging in the town’s square, he locked down the city’s gates and arranged a posse to aid in a shootout against the gunslinger.
But despite the advantage of numbers and even wounding the unbeatable gunslinger, all members of César’s posse would end up lying on the cobblestone with blood pouring from their bodies. And as The Reaper In Red approached the dying leader of this once secured town, César could do little else besides cuss out the American before the sound of a gunshot echoed once more through the blood-stained streets.
The Reaper In Red’s actions left the town in a chaotic state of affairs and by the end of the 20th century, the town would be abandoned and forgotten to the ever-shifting sands of the Chihuahuan Desert.
Graham McKendrick, AKA “Hawk”
When the incredibly violent stories of The Reaper In Red started spreading across the United States, most of the Outlaws went into hiding. Despite their best efforts to vanish into the civilian lifestyle, it didn’t matter as a man in red would soon arrive at their doorstep and the next time their name was spoken, it would be in the obituaries.
But, surprisingly enough, the one member of the Outlaws who survived the longest wasn’t hiding from The Reaper In Red, but rather was chasing after him.
While Graham Mckenrick was running with the Outlaws as their greatest gunfighter, he found the group a rather dull bunch as every heist they pulled required as little bloodshed as possible. Even though his eyesight was similar to the bird whose alias he took up, Hawk’s talent with a rifle was rarely utilized by the group and often made him restless, even with his take from a heist. So when the gang was called to lie low, Graham chose to take his disappearance a step further and ditched his old crew behind.
While the rest of the Outlaws attempted to hide into normal and everyday lives, Graham chose to make his name as a notorious bounty hunter. Taking in the dead for a profit, Graham’s interest in the challenge and the cash quickly grew unquenchable…and unsatiable. His skills with firearms were on the same level as the west’s greatest gunslingers and it wasn’t often he found a challenge against any wannabe gunfighter.
That was until he drew against The Reaper in Red.
Fourteen years ago, Graham encountered the man at a bar in San Francisco, back when the stranger was once eighteen. The stranger was already wanted for the death of Bill O'Malley was sought by the bounty hunter for a quick buck. But before he could even draw his gun out of his holster, the gunslinger spun around and shot off the bounty hunter’s thumb. For the first time in forty years, Graham Mckenrick lost a fight. And for some odd reason, he wasn’t upset about it. If anything, he was downright excited to fight the stranger again.
Since that fateful night, Graham became obsessed with the only person who’s beaten him, so much so that he took up a new wardrobe similar to The Reaper’s outfit with the only difference being a brown duster in place of a red poncho. Despite the dangers, Graham pursued his “rival” with caution tossed to the wind and a crazed look in his eyes. But every time he came to his target’s last known location, The Reaper was already gone.
Graham attempted to track down The Reaper in Red time and time again but always found a dead-end or body in place of his quarry. For sixteen years, Graham ran himself ragged in his search for the gunslinger. It wasn’t helpful that his former “colleagues” were dropping like flies to The Reaper in Red.
That’s when it hit him. These murders weren’t coincidental. They were planned. This man was hunting down the Outlaws. A gang he was once apart of.
Picking up his former title, Hawk spread his name all across the west, anticipating his showdown with The Reaper in Red. He ran through town after town, practically shouting his involvement with the gang from every corner of the United States.
Until, finally, his wish was granted in 1904 when he walked from the safety of the Lyon House Hotel in Springfield, Missouri and found The Reaper in Red waiting for him outside. With a wicked grin, Graham readied a hand over his revolver, determined to give these folks another shootout that would go down in history.
But he had underestimated Cyrus’s skills with a gun as he had hardly cleared leather before a gunshot echoed throughout the city streets. With Graham’s death, Cyrus rode west to Arizona, where his final challenge awaited.
Johnny Harlan, AKA “Rattlesnake”
Northwest of Tombstone, Arizona, a small shack laid dormant in the sand-swept winds of the Chihuahuan Desert. This shack was the home of one resident that never sought company.
Until today.
Cyrus McGrath had achieved the impossible. He survived the untamed American West. He won his battles against every lawman and bandit that dared set themselves in his way. Every person involved in his father’s death was long since buried. His vengeance was almost complete.
There was just one more life he had to take.
His boots slammed down on the old and rickety porch of what he suspected to be his last life to take. As he hovered a hand over his revolver, he knocked on the door and waited to greet his last target.
And he waited.
And waited some more.
Until he got tired of waiting for the occupant and invited himself inside.
As the old door flew open with a hefty kick, his eyes drew themselves to the back of the room, where the shadows of the setting sun did little to hide the man who ruined his life, sitting in a shoddily made chair. But it wasn’t a gun in the dark that greeted Cyrus. Nor a plea for mercy.
But a cold, unnerving silence
He kept his six-gun on the old traitor, staring him down with hatred in his eyes, convinced that the moment he looked away would cause the outlaw to open fire or leap from his chair.
But all his suspicions and malice seemed to vanish the moment he placed a hand around his throat.
And found him cold as the grave.
He didn’t want to believe it. He refused to. Not after everything he’s done, he didn’t want to believe it was all for nothing.
But the truth was plain to see. Johnny Harlan was dead.
His confusion was only added when his eyes had drifted to the bed in the corner. On the mattress was a shovel, a pickaxe and a letter addressed to a name he hadn’t used in quite some time.
Cyrus,
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry for a lot of things but this is what I regret most.
You’re probably pissed as all hell will allow, with you standing above a dead body and all.
Well, I wasn’t planning on up and dying but it wasn’t like I had a choice.
Doc said the old heart’s getting weaker.
I’m hoping for the best but he’s saying to get a will ready.
Had a lot of time to think lately.
You tend to do that knowing you can’t even fight your killer.
But I guess it doesn’t matter.
I knew I wasn’t long for this world the moment I saw your face on the posters.
I saw right then and there the look of a determined man.
Someone who will get his revenge.
But I don’t blame you.
I’m in no position to do anyway.
And I’ll take the blame down to Hell and back.
But do a dying man a favor.
Get out while you can.
Josiah wouldn’t want you to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.
I don’t want you doing that.
And you won’t have to.
Underneath these floorboards is $200,000 in gold.
It’s yours.
I don’t need it anymore.
Use it to pay off your bounty.
Use it to go back home.
I’m sorry.
Johnny
Cyrus looked at the chair that was Harlan’s resting place. Next to it lied a pickaxe and a shovel. He took both and went outside.
Hours later, he went back in and picked up Harlan.
It took a while for Cyrus to dig everything up but Harlan spoke the truth in his final words. Two hundred thousand. All in gold.
As he saddled the bags to his ragged horse, he gave one last look towards the makeshift grave that read Harlan’s name. With a sigh of content, he rode north to Montana and The Reaper in Red was never heard of again.
———————————————‐——————————–
And so, like many other gunslingers and bandits who once roamed the wild west, all that was left of the once-mighty gang are a bunch of stories only told by the wind and a decent enough tombstone etched with their name. Their legacy remains lost to history, forgotten and never spoken about again.
So where are they now? What became of the would-be legendary gang that now took their afterlives in the form of the animal they were in life?
Bill O'Malley has since lived away from the life of a bar fly and found a comfortable job doing what he does best: beating up people for money. Currently the heavyweight boxing champion of Hell, he has since lived his afterlife with a sense of clarity and hasn't touched the bottle in a hundred years.
Luke Winchester continues to live his life as a professional gambler, happily wasting away his afterlife in high stakes games of poker. He would’ve hit big leagues by now if it wasn’t for the telltale twitch of his whiskers and his glances around the table at the sight of an eight or a pair of aces.
Katherine Jezebel operates a brothel in Pentagram City but has since practiced a life of celibacy for herself. She strictly enforces a no firearm policy, save for the Schofield she keeps under her pillow.
Oswalt Dillinger still frequently returns to the opera houses and theatres of Hell. Although his request for a solid iron door with a peephole added to his box is rather odd to the owners of said theaters, he has enough money for them to just give him what he wants.
César de la Rosa Clodoveo hit the ground running and took over a small city where a tyrant once ruled with little more than his two bare hands. Now known as La Puerta de Hierro, the city lies as the safest place in Hell, as long as you listen to the town’s mayor and sheriff.
Graham Mckenrick refused to take his death with pride. Roaming the afterlife as a bounty hunter, the hawk relentlessly continues his pursuit over the man who killed him all those years ago.
And Harlan? No one knows what happened to the Rattlesnake of the Guilty. Some say his punishment was pardoned and he spends his life up in Heaven. Some say he’s long since dead, a victim of the yearly purges.
But little do the people know, there lies a bar far, far out of Pentagram City, where The American Venom is run by a simple serpent known only as Rattle, who says his place in the tale is only coincidental.
But to anyone who looks in the locked chest that sits underneath the bar, a rather exquisite gun belt lies with two double-action revolvers, waiting to be used once more. Black leather-wrapped with floral stitching, the most unique feature of the belt is the silver buckle that lies engraved with two initials.
