Greetings from the Garden State

One of my favorite fun facts in conversations is that I listen to a New Jersey news podcast, The Garden State. While that alone is not strange, adding the fact that I'm not even from New Jersey makes it a tad odd to people. Being from Upstate New York, hardly any of the news is relevant in my everyday life, but I look forward to the podcast each Friday. While learning about New Jersey is indeed interesting, the hosts Josh Sobo, Josh Chomik, and Jimmy Parks, weekend recaps, conversations, and humor make it an even more interesting and enjoyable part of my weekly routine. 

I started listening at the end of 2022; by that time, they were already talking about joining the 2023 Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights. I was intrigued but pushed it off, the typical ‘I’ll do it next year.’ When it came time at the end of 2023, once again they were registering, and I put it off till January 2024 for that same excuse. They spoke passionately in their episodes leading up to the 2024 plunge, so I bit the bullet and registered with my boyfriend Kyle. After my experience in New Jersey, I am so glad I did.

After listening to the podcast for a while, I knew some places I wanted to visit while there. We first started at the Summit Diner in Summit. Walking up to the diner, it had a very welcoming presence and seemed like a popular local place. For all the right reasons too, the staff was so kind, the food was incredible, and most importantly, they have The Other Fellow First Foundation, which helps and comforts New Jersey families in need.

Our next visit was the American Dream Mall, the largest mall I had ever seen. Practically any retail shopping or quick food you desire can be found here. I think the only thing I would have done differently is buy a point pass to try at least one ride while there. After a few hours of walking around the mall, we left to check into our inn for the night. We stayed at the Colts Neck Inn; it was charming in the suite we had. Everything was clean and very well thought out, like the bubble bath left for the jetted tub. 

To end our first day, we went to Asbury Park for dinner at Kim Marie’s Eat N Drink Away, an Irish pub right down the road from the boardwalk. The atmosphere and decor were just as terrific as the food, especially after a long day of travel. Our main reason for going to Asbury was to see the boardwalk and the Stony Pony. As a huge music fan, this historic venue was a must-see. The boardwalk was beautiful even in the February breeze, and the string lights from the bordering businesses had a warm glow in the surrounding atmosphere. On the walk over to The Stone Pony, you could still hear the waves crashing on the shore which was quite relaxing. That night in ‘Portugal. The Man’ was performing there, so the outside was busy with excitement. Even though we did not get tickets, it was wonderful to just see the outside. Before heading out, we went to a small bakery, Confections of a Rockstar, which made the most delightful chocolate tarte. From traveling on our first day we were quite surprised at how many highways are in New Jersey, at least where we were, and that it is illegal to pump your gas, having someone do it for us felt so odd at first. 

Onto the main reason for our trip: the Polar Plunge at Seaside Heights for the New Jersey Special Olympics. Driving into Seaside Heights early in the morning, you could already see the excitement from the first arrivals. The costumes, props, and overall excitement radiated throughout the streets. Checking in was a simple process of scanning a QR code at the dedicated check-in tent and receiving a ticket to get your incentives at the corresponding tent. Following that, we warmed up with Wawa’s Hot Chocolate, a sponsor of the event, at their station. 

After that, it was time to go to the Garden State podcast tent to meet our team, and, not to lie, I was super nervous to meet them. It is one thing to listen to a podcast each week, but another to meet the people behind the screen. Once I got there and met them, I had no reason to be nervous. The first to introduce themselves was Josh Sobo; he was extremely welcoming and kind, asking us questions about ourselves. Then I met Josh Chomik and Jimmy Parks, who were just as welcoming and asked us questions as well, such as where we were from. I'm sure it's not the answer they were expecting, but they thought it was cool how far we traveled. Instead of spinning the wheel on their table to answer a question about New Jersey more specifically, Josh and Jimmy had me name 10 New Jersey towns. I did well until 7 when I started thinking too much and got flustered because it was a surreal moment for me. Anything I knew about New Jersey vanished. But I am so grateful because Josh and Jimmy started giving me hints to guess places, and I did it—all 10! They were so patient and genuinely had fun with it, which made the experience even more rewarding.

Josh gave me a shirt from their brand for completing the challenge, along with some fun keychains and stickers for Kyle and I. He also informed me that they all pitched in so that anyone on their team could eat, which was incredibly thoughtful and kind for them to do. The burgers the Elizabeth Police Department had made were the best I have ever had. After we ate and walked around a little, photographing the boardwalk, it was time to meet up once more for the plunge. 

At this time, a girl named Becky introduced herself, who was also on the team. I enjoyed meeting her, getting to know her, and her reason for joining. A stranger is a friend you just haven't met yet; something I try to live by. We all hung out until it was time to plunge. The team walked together towards the beach, Josh, Josh, and Jimmy making sure the entire group was together, as the boardwalk and beach were incredibly crowded. By the time we hit the beach, the National Anthem had started, followed by the countdown. We all started stripping into our bathing suits and made a run for the ocean. It felt so surreal, running not only with the podcast but with over 8,000 people. Running toward the ocean with not a second thought was the first time in a long time I felt such free-seeking discomfort. 

Walking out onto the cold sand afterward was the worst part of it, as Josh Chomik had warned us. Your feet felt a kind of burning from the change in temperatures. After meeting up once more from where we ran, we made our final goodbyes. I had asked Becky if she would come back next year, to which she said yes. She repeated the question to me, and I also said yes. We did not exchange information, but I am excited about the fact that I will see her then, with a common goal. 

Overall, I loved New Jersey, the weekend trip, and especially the plunge, which was just what I needed. The sense that everyone is there for the same goal and community. Even though I was not from New Jersey, everyone was incredibly welcoming. The plunge was such a rewarding experience. The Garden State podcast hosts were incredible and made for such an enjoyable day. I am so grateful that they introduced me not only to an amazing state but also to an amazing event. Thank you, guys, for your hospitality and a wonderful podcast. I hope to join your Garden State Plungers team next year! Kyle and I are already planning our next New Jersey trip to enjoy the beach in the summer and some hikes.

- Normalne – odpowiedział od razu, z taką prostotą i brakiem skrępowanie jakie tylko chyba Josh potrafił okazać. Nieprzejęty, a tym bardziej nieskrępowany faktem, ze ma ksywkę swojego chłopaka (w którym był zakochany od dawna) jako hasło do komputera, leżał na łóżku i przyznawał się do tego. To wcale az tak dziwne nie było, bo Brand w niektórych kwestiach przypominał nastolatkę, a nie (co by nie mówić) dorosłego już faceta od którego wymagało się pewnego rodzaju powagi. Dobra, to już brzmiało przesadnie, ale faceci na ogół nie robili takich rzeczy. A nawet jeśli… To na Boga, nie przyznawali się do tego. A tutaj wszyscy na pewno wiedzieli o tym haśle, bo jakżeby inaczej: z komputera korzystali wszyscy, łącznie z Jeffem od czasu do czasu, gdy jego laptop nie wyrabiał na grach, a sprzęt Josha spokojnie i bezstresowo pozwalał odpalać cześć nawet najnowszych produkcji. Więc no… Kwintesencja Branda właśnie wyszła. – Masz coś do niego? – zapytał ze śmiechem.  Krępujące.  - To widzę, aleee… – nie dokończył, bo ten mu wepchnął do ust parę ziarenek popcornu, wypychając mu przy tym zabawnie policzki. Trochę jak chomik. Niezależnie od tego Josha oczy się śmiały, bo niestety ale usta miał pełne i nawet ciężko było się uśmiechać. Jednak zadowolenie z niego emanowało tak bardzo, ze nawet bez zerkania na jego twarz Mały mógł je spokojnie wyczuć. I domyślić, bo znał swojego chłopaka już trochę i doskonale potrafił niektóre rzeczy odczuć, inne zrozumieć… Nauczył się go trochę. Za to Brand… No, nie do końca czuł tę dumę. Jasne, potrafił dostrzec ze Matt był z siebie zadowolony, zapewne z tego, ze wpadł na cos i naprawdę poprawił swojemu chłopakowi humor, ale nie powiązał tego z męską, samczą dumą. Z tym, ze Mały się właśnie spełniał w roli chłopaka, i co by nie mówić, pasowało mu to o wiele bardziej od prób zadowolenia Noory.  W sumie dobrze wychodziło – Josh z radości mógłby sobie skręcić tez drugą nogę. Tak czy inaczej, gdy w końcu film się zaczął na dobre, grafik wlepił wzrok w ekran i nie odrywał go praktycznie przez całe dwie godziny. Pomijając moment, gdy Matt zmieniał pozycje, wtulając się w ścianę (na swojej stronie tego niedużego łóżka). Josh jedynie sięgnął po koc, próbując wyciągnąć go spod siebie, aby przykryć chłopaka. Szybko jednak wracając do oglądania filmu, wyjadając przy tym wszystko, zapijając to herbatą Małego, kiedy tylko wypił swój sok. Przesłodzony, najedzony i w sumie… W sumie szczęśliwy mimo skręconej nogi. Miał seans, jedzenie i chłopaka obok. Było dobrze. I korzystając z tego, ze Matt był obok kiedy tylko film się skończył obrócił się w jego stronę, obejmując go ramieniem i przytulając do jego pleców.

“Hey what’s up guys, and welcome to another episode oooof…”

“Josh squared!” Both Josh’s greeted.

“Did you know, you smell like a baby squirrel?” Josh said smelling Sobo.

“What? How do you even know what a baby squirrel smells like?” Sobo asked.

“I may or may not have one in my bathtub… oh look its my girlfriend!” Josh said changing the topic and pointing at the (h/c) haired girl coming towards the two with a hat in her hands.

“Hey (y/n), whatcha doing?” Josh asked pecking (y/n) on the lips.

“Awe to cute. Say hi to the camera you two.” Tyler said still filming.

“Heeey.” (y/n) said winking then putting the hat on Josh’s head, “Don’t need you getting sick.” (Y/n) pecked Josh’s lips one last time, before heading inside the house.

“She’s so good to me.” Josh smiled.

“Yeah your lucky man.” Sobo said, a hint of jealousy in his voice.

“Hey guys check out (Y/n)’s channel at (Y/yt/n), she makes amazing videos.” Josh told the camera, “Any way lets get back to the video.”

~TIME SKIP~

“(Y/n), how much do you love me?” Josh asked walking up behind the (h/c) haired girl who was currently making dinner for everyone, and wrapped his arms around her waist, kissing her neck making her shutter.

“You already know that answer, I would do anything for you.” (y/n) giggled, putting her hands over Josh’s.

“I know I just wanted to hear you say it.” Josh said nuzzling her neck.

~ANOTHER TIME SKIP~

“Damn gurl you make the best sausages eva.” Tyler said making (Y/n) laugh and almost choke on her supper. Josh rubbed her back to calm her down handing her his milk so she could wash it down.

“Ahem *cough, cough* thanks Tyler, it wasn’t that hard.” (Y/n) smiled, putting a hand on Josh’s knee telling him she was okay.

“(y/n)?” Sobo questioned.

“Yeah Josh, what is it?” The said girl replied.

“Do you plan on having kids when you older? And get married?” Sobo asked.

(Y/n was shocked at this question, and she nearly almost chocked again, if it wasn’t for Josh patting her back.

“Yeah someday, whenever this idiot grows a pair and asks.” That made everyone at the table burst out in laughter, even Josh.

‘Guess it’s now or never.’ Josh thought, feeling his pocket for the little black box, when he felt it was there, he stood up in front of everyone. They all looked at him with curious eyes.

Josh’s green eyes staring right into (y/n)’s (e/c) ones.

Josh got down on one knee, in front of (y/n) and took her hands into his.

“(y/n) we’ve been together for five years, and known each other for fourteen. You are the love of my life, and one of my best friends, so will you (y/f/n) (y/l/n), do me the honors and marrying me?” Josh asked taking out the black box from his pocket and opening it revealing a beautiful silver band ring, with a (f/c) gem in the middle of two smaller (f/c) gems.

(y/n)’s hands shot up to her mouth, tears pooling at the corners of her (e/c) eyes, a big smile on her face as she nodded, not trusting herself to talk for if she did she knew she would start balling her eyes out.

Tyler cheered, while Sobo pouted as Josh slipped the engagement ring onto (y/n)’s ring finger, kissing her such passion. She threw her arms around his neck tangling her fingers in his bleached hair, as he held her waist, circling his thumbs on her sides.

“Awe, you two gonna make a grown man cry.” Tyler sniffled, pretending to wipe away a tear. Sobo sat in his chair at the table sulking, he sunk further into the chair, his arms crossed.

“Get a room you two!” Sobo yelled getting up from the chair and going to his room, in the house all four live in.

“What’s wrong with Sobo?” Josh questioned tilting his head to the side in a way (y/n) found adorable.

“Let me go talk to him.” (y/n) said giving Josh one last kiss before getting up and walking over to Sobo’s room at the end of the hall.

“Josh, its (y/n), can I come in?” She asked.

“Y-yeah its op-open.” His voice cracked almost as if he was crying.

(Y/n) opened the door and sure enough Sobo’s eyes were red, and some tears were running down his face. (Y/n) sat down beside him, and brought him into a big hug.

“Why are you crying? What’s wrong Josh?” She asked in a gentle voice.

“I know it wont make a difference, and I know how much you love Josh, but I have to say this… I love you (y/n), and I have ever since we met.” Sobo confessed, more tears falling down his cheeks.

“Oh Josh.” (y/n) pulled him even closer to her, he laid his head on her shoulder. From outside the door Josh stood leaning against the wall his hands in his pockets as he watched the two, hearing every word they said. He felt a little guilty that he was putting his friend through this pain but he loved (y/n) and he couldn’t help the fact that Sobo liked her too.

“Can I still come to the wedding?” Sobo asked.

“We never said you couldn’t.” (y/n) smiled kissing the top of his head.

“Thanks (n/n).” Sobo smiled wiping his tears away.

“Anytime Josh, now come on lets go finish supper before it gets really cold.” (y/n) said standing up, she walked over to where josh was leaning on the wall in the hallway, she kissed his cheek then went back to the dinning room where Tyler was still at shoving yet another sausage in his mouth.

Josh gave a pat to Sobo’s back.

“I’m sorry, man if I had known, I would have never done that right in front of you.” josh said apologetically.

“Nah its fine now, just make me the best man and we’ll call it even.” Sobo said putting his hand out.

“Deal.” The two shook hands then brought it in for a bro hug, patting each other on the back.

~ANOTHER TIME SKIP~

It was the day of the wedding, Josh stood nervously at the front of the isle, Sobo and Tyler at his side. His sister and (y/n)’s friend (f/n) were also at the front on the other side of the alter from the men. Then the tune of here comes the bride suddenly started playing on the organ. Josh looked up and saw the most amazing thing he’s ever seen. (y/n) with her (h/l) (h/c) pinned up in beautiful curls, was walking down the isle with her father. She had a beautiful (f/c) dress on to match her ring. She got to the end of the isle and her father gave her hands to Josh after her father kissed her forehead.

“You look stunning.” Josh said a huge smile on his face.

“You don’t look too bad yourself.” She winked.

~TIME SKIP PASS ALL THE BORING STUFF CUZ I REALLY DONT WANT TO WRITE IT ALL OUT~

“Do you Josh Chomik take, (Y/f/n) (y/l/n) to be you lawfully wedded wife?” The priest asked looking at Josh.

“I do.” Josh smiled.

“And do you (Y/f/n) (Y/l/n) take, Josh Chomik to be your lawfully wedded husband?” The priest asked again this time looking at (Y/n).

“I do.” She said also smiling.

“Then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife, you-”

Before the priest could finish talking Josh smashed his lips onto (Y/n)’s.

“-may continue kissing the bride.” The priest chuckled, closing the book. Everyone cheered, even Sobo this time.

The two broke apart, in need for air. Josh picked up (y/n) and ran out of the church and into their Jeep, with the words 'Just Married’ on the back window.

“I love you Mr. Chomik.”

“I love you too Mrs. Chomik”

Josh kissed (Y/n) one last time before driving off to their honeymoon destination was.

The whole wedding was taped on Josh’s camera by Jimmy.
