you know when you’re eating a sandwich and you go to take a bite and like a huge chunk of your favorite part just slips out (like say your eating a blt and you accidentally pull out a whole piece of bacon) and you’re torn because on the one hand that bite is going to be the best bite ever but on the other hand the rest of your sandwich just lost a valuable team player 3 minutes into the game and no one’s sure how it’s going to be able to cover that loss.

Character Profile: Smalls

Real Name: None

Nickname and Meaning: Smalls, probably because they’re so thin. Could also refer to them being the youngest borough leader.

Age: Unsure. If they’re a leader, they’re probably older, but their nickname could be referring to them being young. They’re most likely between 13 and 15, but could be up to 18 years old.

Gender: Smalls is played by both men and women.

Family: Smalls has more than one brother and at least one parent who she helps support. (Meet the Newsies: Liana Hunt)

Smalls…:

Is a Bronx newsie, probably the leader or a higher up, as they’re the one to say “So’s the Bronx!” (Newsies Live script, page 62) Laurie Veldheer confirmed that they are the same person as the Smalls who spoon fights with Race during King of New York. (Backstage at “Newsies” with Ben Fankhauser and Tommy Bracco)

However, Smalls is still allowed to come to Manhattan (specifically Jacobi’s), (Newsies Live script, pages 32 and 50) implying that the Bronx and Manhattan are on good terms.

Is androgynous. Besides being played by both boys and girls, there seems to be some confusion on whether the character themself is a boy or a girl. Laurie Veldheer has stated that they’re “supposed to be a boy” (Backstage at “Newsies” with Ben Fankhauser and Tommy Bracco) but Liana Hunt says that Smalls is a “girl newsie”. (Meet the Newsies: Liana Hunt) Either way, Smalls probably has some sort of non- standard gender or gender presentation going on.

Is a fighter. Smalls "knows (their) way to fit in is to be one of the guys”, which probably means being rough- and- tumble. During Brooklyn’s here, they’re the only newsie to shout their borough rather than sing it, implying a more aggressive personality. (Newsies Live script, page 62)

Why is Smalls allowed in Manhattan?

If the Bronx is on good terms with Manhattan, why would they wait for Brooklyn to join the strike to support them?

How do you know so many newsies? I’ve frankly gotten a lot better at it than I used to be (I can easily recognize Mush/Romeo/Specs/Albert/Finch/Spot/Race/etc, and I’m getting better at recognizing Tommy Boy/Elmer/Henry, and I’m working on recognizing Buttons) but there’s still some newsies who I have no idea who they are, like Sniper, Mike/Ike, Smalls, and more. So I was just wondering if you have some tips??

this is actually something i love helping people with ! it can be super hard to figure out who is who especially when watching the show and everyone is moving around, dancing, and wearing practically the same outfit over and over, but these are my tips as well as who plays each character !

( i’ll skip main characters as well as the ones you listed )

also i’m gonna do this based on LIVE cause that’s what most people have access too but i’ll also put who they’ve been played by in the rest of the run

also also, the best way i would say to remember them (and what i do) is just memorize the actors honestly, i just made a list of everyone in each cast (which i would be happy to share) and studied it and pointed them out as i watched or looked at pictures and matched them up and eventually got it

Medicine the Musical

Medicine the Musical is “for anyone who’s ever worked hard for a dream” as their website says. However, it is not truly one cohesive storyline of a group of first year medical students. While, yes, we focus on them, the whole thing feels more like a season of a show (like Grey’s Anatomy) condensed into a half an hour with no intermission. While you like everything and they certainly have the passion to sell the story to the audience, everything feels a little rushed. It feels less like we are learning about the characters and how they overcome the difficulties of medical school, and more like the first episode of a show, that happens to last the full year of medical school. (Oh hey! Look, there’s Bobby, he’s rich, and oh there’s Sam, she’s poor and oh no they don’t like each other. Whatever will we do?)

Instead of one cohesive story, it feel more like short vignettes of each of the main characters - which is still okay, if you’re expecting that. Individually they are as strong as they are allowed to be in the time they are given (which isn’t that much). There was also an issue where it felt like one of the characters (Tyler) felt like the writer of the play was trying to shoehorn diversity into the story where it didn’t fit. The character didn’t interact with any of the other main characters, his short story never got any kind of conclusion and in the end I forgot he was meant to be one of the major characters we followed through med school.

The acting itself was pretty okay. Given the stereotypical characters they had been given, there was a pretty good expansion on them and integration of their personality in the actions they had to take - but it was nothing phenomenal. Same with the directing.

Nextly, the singing is pretty bad. While I do not claim to be any kind of a musical expert, the songs would consistently feel strained and difficult for the actors in the vocals department. However, their passion does override that difficulty a little, eventually. Especially if you don’t know what to listen for. They also try to cover the vocals slightly with the live music, which, while very good, only made me strain to hear the vocals better, which isn’t the best in this case.

Now, onto something I loved the most! The lighting! It was so beautiful, especially when we were seeing the non-singing parts of reality, and it knew when to highlight the right things. I would give it perfect marks, except for the fact that there was a pretty big overuse of the dapple effect on the ground, with lots of colored dots lit up, and I had some personal issues with the choices of color -- which was highlighted by the usage of dapple.

Overall this was a nice musical and an okay play. If you don’t particularly like musicals, I wouldn’t recommend it, and if you go to musicals because the singing is amazing, I would say also don’t go. It’s something light and fluffy to watch if you have a soft spot for musicals, but aren’t particularly obsessed by them either. AKA me in a nutshell.
