Doug Hubbard's first-hand experience provides unique insights into this little explored topic of the war, and the addition of a broad spectrum of his photos complements the narrative with a real life appeal. In an era when the term "terrorism" was not yet in vogue, NIS' investigations of insurgent attacks against US troops is a grim reminder of current threats our military faces in Afghanistan and around the globe on a daily basis.” Michael Sulick, Former Director, CIA National Clandestine Service “Although the Viet Nam War gives up its secrets grudgingly, former special agent Douglass Hubbard unveils an intriguing account of U.S. Naval Intelligence operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Drawing on his three years’ service in Vietnam and his subsequent research and interviews, Hubbard weaves a masterful story with 'NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam' that is equally inspiring and frustrating-just as the war itself proved to be.” Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC. (Ret.) author of the Battle History of the U.S. Marines “Doug Hubbard Jr. explores the seamy underside of the Vietnam War from his ‘catbird seat’ as a special agent of the Naval Investigative Service. At the most there were never more than twenty-one of these Naval Intelligence officers serving in-country, and they had to deal with an overload of such unsavory matters as counter espionage, sabotage, black marketing, currency manipulation, simple theft, drug trafficking, subversion, rape, and murder. Sometimes these investigations came to a brilliant resolution that Sherlock Holmes would have applauded. More often they foundered because of command apathy or indifference.” Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons, USMC, Chief of Staff of the First Marine Division in 1970, former head of the Marine Corps History Branch, and author of Frozen Chosin: US Marines at the Changjin Reservoir “Doug Hubbard’s exposition with NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam defines a period of counterintelligence development in the Vietnam conflict and records its events for the first time. Compiled personal recollections of wartime special agents make this historical narrative a defining work in the legacy left by the group of Naval Intelligence professionals who devised rules for counterintelligence and force protection in the challenging and dangerous arena of Vietnam in the 1960s. Theirs was a monumental contribution to the U.S. government’s efforts to achieve stability in the Republic of Vietnam, particularly in the early days of the mission when much was accomplished by a select few.” Maynard C. Anderson, former Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Security Policy
Review - It was a decent book with a lot of historical information on the Vietnam War and NIS's members. The main problem with the book was how light it was on actual cases vs pages and pages of commentary of who was assigned when and where. Another major issue were the multiple misspellings (Viet Congo is a common one) and repeated paragraphs. It's not unreadable, but it had issues. But for the historical information, and a few insights into deserters, fraggings, and a few interesting cases, it's worth a read.

John Galvin Duesler, Sr.
Tumblr media
John Galvin Duesler Sr, 84, of Courtdale, passed away peacefully, Friday, August 23, 2024. John was born June 30, 1940 in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Stephen Galvin Duesler and Anellia ‘Nell” Valaika Duesler.
John ‘Moose’ Duesler was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School Wilkes-Barre, where he exceled at basketball. After graduation, he began a lifelong career as a newspaper printer. John was a long-time employee at the Times Leader in 1978, when he joined the picket line to fight against the national conglomerate Capital Cities. John was one of the dedicated strikers who, with their families, launched The Citizens’ Voice Newspaper on October 9th, 1978. This family newspaper, despite all odds, is still in existence today, something John was so very proud of.
John met the love of his life, Dorothy Masonis, at Chuya’s Bar in Wilkes-Barre in 1960, marrying September 2, 1961, at St. Mary's Annunciation Church, Kingston. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage and created a legacy of four children, 13 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
John was a devote Catholic and parishioner of The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Kingston, serving as a eucharistic minister and member of their pastoral council. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Assumpta Council 3987, holding office of Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was active in their youth basketball tournament and Toys for Toys campaign, among many other fundraising events.
John was THE number one Notre Dame football fan. He was a longtime member of the Notre Dame Club of Hanover Township, travelling to many games in South Bend, Indiana. One of his proudest moments was accompanying his grandson Trevin on an unofficial visit. When he entered the locker room and looked around, John quickly told Trevin he was nowhere near big enough, the one time he was sad to be right.
John’s most favorite times were those spent with his family. He was proudest cheering on his grandchildren playing soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, football, baseball, and wrestling, as well as while attending drama and musical events. He never missed anything they were participating in.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 2022, grandson Tyler Joseph Cowman in 2021, and son-in-laws Christopher Dubaskas in 2023, and Shawn Cowman in 2024.
John is survived by sons, John Galvin Duesler Jr. and his wife Bernice, Huntingdon Valley; Sean Duesler and Jennifer Yarnell, Kingston; daughters, Diane Cowman, Kingston and Denise Duesler, Edwardsville; grandchildren, Trevin Cowman and wife Brittany, Alabama; Galvin Duesler and wife Ashley, Wyoming; Trey Cowman, Wilkes-Barre Twp; Regina Duesler, Washington D.C.; Kasen Heim, Edwardsville; John Galvin Duesler III, Huntingdon Valley; Cameron Duesler, Edwardsville; James Duesler, Huntingdon Valley; Seaman Aubrey Duesler, stationed in Italy; Nell Duesler, Huntingdon Valley; Molly Duesler, Edwardsville; Kaden Dubaskas, Edwardsville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Ralph Flowers and lifelong friends Mary Nancy and Jack Kelley.
John’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Second Family Memory Care Center, staff at Providence Place in Drums, especially Mallory and Lucy, and angel Darlene and associates at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the outstanding and compassionate care provided to our Dad and Grampy John.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave, Forty Fort.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston. Private interment will be in St. Mary's Annunciation Cemetery, Pringle, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to his grandson Tyler Cowman's memorial foundation, TyJo and Co., which is dedicated to aiding children in need, at https://luzfdn.org/types-of-funds/tyjo-co-memorial-fund/ or by mail to TyJo and Co., c/o The Luzerne Foundation, 34 S. Cincinnati’s Election of 1921 Was Boss Cox’s Last Gasp
One hundred years ago, as Cincinnati went to the polls, the hot issues included corruption in city government, the politicization of school boards and controversial trolley service. Sound familiar?
The election of 1921 also marked the debut of a future television star. William Lorne “Bill” Nimmo later became one of the most famous radio-television personalities in Cincinnati’s well-populated pantheon. But, during the 1921 campaign, he was just four-year-old William L. Nimmo Junior banging a drum in support of his father, running for Municipal Court Clerk on the Independent ticket.
Tumblr media
Despite the support of the nascent luminary, William Nimmo Senior went down in defeat along with the entire Independent slate, the entire Democratic slate, and the entire Farmer-Labor slate. The election of 1921 demonstrated the residual influence of the Republican machine built 40 years earlier by George Barnsdale Cox, better known as “Boss” Cox. Although five years in his grave, Cox’s machine hummed merrily along, siphoning up voters like so much featherbedding.
George P. Carrel, Cincinnati City Auditor, residing at 3611 Morris Place in Columbia-Tusculum, was the successful Republican candidate that year, personally recruited by Boss Cox’s heir, Rudolph Kelker “Rud” Hynicka. Carrel’s campaign message, as outlined in one of his advertisements, was simple – toe the party line, or else.
“Teamwork is essential to constructive municipal activities. Party responsibility is a guarantee of departmental co-ordination and co-operation. A Republican council is indispensable to concert of action in carrying to completion Republican policies of progress and prosperity.”
Judge Joseph B. Kelley of the Insolvency Court, residing at the Hotel Alms, Independent candidate, led a revolt from within the GOP. He proclaimed:
“I am a Republican and always have been and because I love the Republican party I am making this fight on the issue of bossism. If I’m elected I shall conduct my office with a view to the general good and not for the purpose of winning votes or prestige for a political boss.”
Charles Herbst, clerk at the Southern Railway Depot, residing in Flat 3, 2200 Vine Street, headed the Farm-Labor ticket. He was all for strong unions and against monopolies:
“If I am elected mayor I will do all in my power to have the burden of taxation taken off the small homeowner and placed where it belongs, especially upon real estate that is held for speculation. The police will never be used for strike-breaking purposes. I promise to take steps toward bringing about municipal ownership of street railways and the gas and electric light utilities to the end that they shall be conducted for the public service and not for private profit.”
Doctor Charles Lybrand Bonifield, physician and surgeon with offices at 409 Broadway and residence at 1763 East McMillan, was that year’s Democratic candidate. He aimed all his ammunition at Hynicka and the Cox machine:
“The city is and has been extravagantly managed, and a more economical management would of itself have a tendency to reduce the taxes. The only way to have business in Cincinnati and Hamilton County conducted on a business basis is to dethrone King Rud.”
To reform-minded Cincinnatians, the dominance of the Cox juggernaut was especially galling because Cincinnati’s Republican party was run by a man who didn’t even live in the city. Rud Hynicka got his start as a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer but drifted into politics and rose to become one of Boss Cox’s most trusted lieutenants. He parlayed an interest in the old Vine Street Opera House into a chain of burlesque theaters based out of New York, and he eventually transferred his business headquarters to the Big Apple, while maintaining an iron grip on Cincinnati politics.
One tactic in particular lifted the hood of the Hynicka machine to display the gang’s nefarious scheming. A week before the 1921 election, the Republican party announced a reduction in trolley fares from eight cents to seven and a half cents and trumpeted the half-cent discount as a mere harbinger of future favors planned by the Republican administration. As opposition candidates were quick to point out, the Republicans finagled this minimal rate decrease by exempting the Traction Company from paying its $350,000 franchise fee – which meant citizens had to make up the difference with additional taxes. Further, the fee exemption didn’t quite cover the revenue lost by the discount, so the Traction Company pulled several trolleys out of service.
It is difficult to measure, looking back from a century distant, how effective that ploy was. Certainly more potent was Hynicka’s stranglehold on patronage jobs and political favors. The Republican ward-heelers knew their constituents microscopically and saw to it that unemployed voters got city appointments, that the party faithful were treated favorably in the courts and that the right sort of businesses got municipal contracts.
Or not. Although Boss Cox and his successor, King Rud, had sewn up the African American vote for decades, that portion of their base was growing mightily disenchanted with the Republican machine. Baptist ministers met with Hynicka in early November to ask why, after decades of faithful support, no African American had ever been appointed to any significant position at City Hall or the County Courthouse and why the Fire Department remained completely white. Despite receiving lackluster promises, it appears that the black vote supported the machine that year.
Mayor-elect Carrel’s victory was bittersweet. While electing almost the entire Hynicka-backed machine slate, voters turned down a tax levy aimed at balancing the city’s graft-bleeding budget.
The one significant sputter in Hynicka’s legacy machine in 1921 came in the school board race, where a Citizen’s ticket of John B. Hollister, John M. Withrow, Emma W. Fillmore, and Samuel Ach trounced the candidates pushed by the Hynicka cabal. While Cincinnati was accustomed to graft and corruption at City Hall, the egregious politicization of the city’s schools finally roused the voters to elect a reform slate. That victory was also bittersweet. Though snatching management of the schools from the greedy machine politicians, voters defeated a much-needed school levy.
The Cincinnati Post, stalwart proponent of reform, sighed editorially [10 November 1921]:
“We hope that for the next four years policies will be responsive to the questions: Is this right? Is that for the public good? Will the people be benefitted or damaged?”
The next mayoral election, in 1925, swept the Boss Cox cronies out of office and established the Charter Committee as the symbol of a new day in Cincinnati.

Kennedy Curse
The Kennedy tragedies , colloquially called the Kennedy Curse , is a term sometimes used to describe a series of tragedies involving members of the Kennedy family . Many of the tragedies have been caused by preventable reckless choices like driving drunk, piloting an airplane under unsafe conditions, or choosing such relatively dangerous careers as military service or politics. If such events are subtracted from the Kennedy family record, what remains resembles a more ordinary table of events likely to occur in such a large family, such as cancer or pregnancy miscarriage. The notion of a curse is superstitious and was created and is fostered by the news media .
1941 – Rosemary Kennedy is believed to have been mentally retarded . However, some sources have claimed she was suffering from mental illness, such as depression. Because of her increasingly violent and severe mood swings, her father, Joe, Sr. , arranged in secret for her to undergo a lobotomy . The surgery impaired her cognitive abilities even more, and as a result, she remained institutionalized until her death in 2005.
August 12, 1944 - Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. dies when his converted B-24 Liberator bomber carrying a bomb prematurely detonates and destroys the Liberator, vaporizing Kennedy near the village of Blythburgh in Suffolk, England.
May 13, 1948 – Kathleen Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington , dies in a plane crash in France .
August 23, 1956 – Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy gives birth to a stillborn daughter, Arabella . (Although the daughter was unnamed and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to her parents with a marker reading “Daughter”, later reports indicated that the Kennedys had intended to name her Arabella.)
August 9, 1963 – Patrick Bouvier Kennedy dies two days after his birth.
November 22, 1963 – U.S. President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas .
June 19, 1964 – U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy is involved in a plane crash in which one of his aides and the pilot were killed. He was pulled from the wreckage by fellow senator Birch E. Bayh II and spent weeks in a hospital recovering from a broken back, a punctured lung, broken ribs, and internal bleeding.
June 6, 1968 – U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan in Los Angeles immediately following his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary.
July 18, 1969 – In the Chappaquiddick incident , a car driven by Ted Kennedy accidentally goes off a bridge in Chappaquiddick Island , killing his passenger Mary Jo Kopechne . In his July 25 televised statement, Kennedy stated that on the night of the incident he wondered “whether some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys.”
August 13, 1973 – Joseph P. Kennedy II is the driver in a car accident that leaves his passenger, Pam Kelley, permanently paralyzed.
November 17, 1973 – Edward M. Kennedy, Jr. loses a portion of his right leg due to bone cancer.
April 25, 1984 – David Anthony Kennedy died of a Demerol and cocaine overdose in a Palm Beach, Florida hotel room.
December 31, 1997 – Michael LeMoyne Kennedy died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado .
July 16, 1999 – John F. Kennedy, Jr. died when the Piper Saratoga light aircraft he is piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard due to pilot error .
September 16, 2011 - Kara Kennedy Allen died of a heart attack while exercising in a Washington, D.C. health club.

edward ashley as lieutenant colonel john b. kidd (@carninator-blog recognized them on set from the Beginning, like the first few photos on set back in early spring!)
sam haygarth as (possibly) captain ralph d. kelley. (there was no ralph kelley in the 100th. the only kelleys are a dwight and joseph and neither of them have "ralph" as a middle name or something. what makes this theory make sense to me is that capt. kelley was in the 95th, similar to how dan o'donnell was in the 95th. i may still be wrong about that, but these guys were not in the 100th but people with their names were in the 95th. anyway, we'll see what happens!)
there's also tiyanyi kiy, an actress playing a party guest in an anna boden directed episode. her role by itself probably isn't major since she's playing someone with no actual name. but her cv mentions White Waltham Airfield, and that's probably a new filming location for us!

THE TANGLE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Indie Rights
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A.S.P. (Army of Simply Purity) is a secret government agency that watches over the Tangle from within technology safe rooms, locations impermeable to the nanobots that make up the Tangle. When the A.S.P. field agent Margot Foster is murdered in one of these rooms, an abandoned speakeasy, it’s the first murder in California in three years. The main suspect is Carter Carmine, a private detective, who used to work with the agents of A.S.P. on a program called the Cleopatra Squad. Cleopatra created the Tangle. Married A.S.P. agents Edward Banderas and Laurel Arrow have brought Carter to one of the safe rooms after surgically removing his S.O.L. from his brain. Carter was following Margot just before her murder. He has a motive, and he is one of the few in the world with the technical expertise to hide from the Tangle. The agents use the Tangle information to badger Carter: they know his movements down to the millimeter, down to the millisecond. He is clearly hiding something.
REVIEW: THE TANGLE is a noir driven tale where science fiction is used as the foundation for the plot. Unlike the visually breathtaking film “Blade Runner,” Ridley Scot’s take on Philip K. Dick’s tale “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” THE TANGLE is more of a claustrophobic noir piece that focuses on the dynamics of five characters and the mystery surrounding a murder. As the majority of the drama takes place in a single location, and in mostly a single room, there is a feel to the action that made me wonder if it at one point might have been a stage play. There are some interesting exterior locations and the speakeasy where the murder is committed, but those, and a couple of other production designs, feel like window dressing to connect us to this futuristic world.
The key component to THE TANGLE is Christopher Soren Kelly, who not only stars in the film but is also the director, screenwriter, and editor. He clearly understands the material and has the skills to do an excellent job both in front of and behind the camera. The science fiction elements aside, the film feels more like a Dashiell Hammett or Mickey Spillane story. Kelly does a nice job of moving the camera and adding some quick edits to keep the energy flowing. He gets solid performances from his cast that builds tension and maintains the viewer’s engagement. Sometimes the dialogue is laid on a bit thick with the quick wit and baroque barbs from those noir films. There are a few times where it feels a bit much and takes the viewer out of the action for a moment. Overall, Kelley does an impressive job with what he delivers with all the hats he is wearing on this film.
I enjoyed the plot, thought the science fiction element was compelling, and liked how the characters were connected. Other than the self-driving car in the opening of the film or the talk of nanobots, I would say the film has more of a Steampunk feel to it as there are other elements that seem more mechanical or gear heavy, as do the weapons. Enhancing the tone and emotional cues of the film is an excellent score by composer Liam Fox O'Brien. There are movements in the score that feel like they are paying homage to some cinematic sci-fi classics.
Any good science fiction story is at its core and examination of the human condition. Regardless of all the gadgets, flight suits, and flying crafts, the tales address larger issues in a way that allows the reader or viewer to come to grips with it in their daily lives. THE TANGLE presents several issues, including the use of tech as we are currently addressing in our daily lives. It is an important issue even in these pandemic times. I appreciate that Kelly presents these arguments without backing the viewer into a corner or making conclusions for us. He does present the characters in a way that there are consequences for their actions, which gives the film that cautionary aspect. Kelly presents a good story and what he delivers works as a solid piece of cinematic storytelling. Still, I wonder if it might be an even more powerful stage drama.
Having had a chance to digest the film I couldn’t help but wonder at the irony if at some point Kelly had thought of Sir Walter Scott’s famous aphorism, “Oh what a tangled web we weave/When first we practice to deceive.”

can you inform me of the kennedys curse
the kennedies keep dying. all sorts a messed up ways. assasinations, overdoses, plane tricks. here’s some deep lit about the matter. educate yourself, and stay safe out The Kennedy curse refers to a series of deaths, accidents, and other calamities involving members of the American Kennedy family. The alleged curse has primarily struck the children and descendants of businessman Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., but it has also impacted family friends, associates, and other relatives. Political assassinations and plane crashes have been the most common manifestations of the curse. Events that have been cited as evidence of a curse include: Kennedy deaths- August 12, 1944 – Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. died when the BQ-8 aircraft he was piloting accidentally exploded over East Suffolk, England. (A BQ-8 was a B-24 Liberator converted into a radio-controlled flying bomb. For more information, see Project Anvil).May 13, 1948 – Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, formally known as Kathleen Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington, died in a plane crash in France. August 9, 1963 – Patrick Bouvier Kennedy died of infant respiratory distress syndrome two days after his premature birth on August 7th (the 20th anniversary of his father's rescue after the sinking of PT-109).November 22, 1963 – U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald. In 1964, the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald was the lone assassin, but, in 1979, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded that the assassination was the result of a conspiracy and that Oswald did not act alone. June 5, 1968 – On the night of his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary, U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot by Sirhan Sirhan in the Ambassador Hotel; Kennedy died the following day. April 25, 1984 – David A. Kennedy died of a drug overdose in a Palm Beach, Florida hotel room. December 31, 1997 – Michael LeMoyne Kennedy died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado. July 16, 1999 – John F. Kennedy Jr. died when the plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. The crash was attributed to pilot error and spatial disorientation. His wife and sister-in-law were also on board and also died. September 16, 2011 – Kara Kennedy died of a heart attack while exercising in a Washington, D.C. health club. Kara had reportedly suffered from lung cancer nine years earlier, but she had recovered after the removal of part of her right lung. May 16, 2012 – Mary Richardson Kennedy committed suicide on the grounds of her home in Bedford, Westchester County, New York. August 1, 2019 – Saoirse Roisin Kennedy Hill died of an accidental drug overdose at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Other incidents November 1941 – Rosemary Kennedy, age 23, struggled to read and write, and she suffered from mood swings, seizures, and violent outbursts. In an attempt to cure or treat his daughter (or, more likely, to keep her under control and avoid the potential for social embarrassment and political damage to the family), Joseph Kennedy secretly arranged for her to undergo a prefrontal lobotomy, which was seen as a promising treatment for various mental illnesses. Instead of saving Rosemary, the now-discredited procedure left her mentally and physically incapacitated. Rosemary remained institutionalized in seclusion, in rural Wisconsin, until her death in 2005. October 3, 1955 – Ethel Kennedy's parents, Ann and George Skakel, died in a plane crash in Oklahoma. December 19, 1961 – Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. suffered a massive stroke which left him paralyzed on his right side. He also struggled with aphasia, which severely affected his ability to speak. June 19, 1964 – U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy survived a plane crash that killed one of his aides as well as the pilot. The senator was pulled from the wreckage by passenger (and fellow senator) Birch Bayh. Kennedy spent five months in a hospital recovering from a broken back, a punctured lung, broken ribs, and internal bleeding. Following the crash, Bobby Kennedy remarked to aide Ed Guthman: "Somebody up there doesn't like us." July 18, 1969 – Ted Kennedy accidentally drove his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, resulting in the drowning death of 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. In his televised statement a week later, the senator said that on the night of the incident he wondered "whether some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys."January 23, 1973 – Alexander Onassis, stepbrother of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Caroline Kennedy, died from injuries sustained in a plane crash in Athens, Greece. His sister, Christina Onassis, blamed the Kennedy curse. August 13, 1973 – Joseph P. Kennedy II was the driver of a Jeep that crashed and left his passenger, Pam Kelley, paralyzed. Fellow passenger, brother David A. Kennedy, was injured. November 17, 1973 – Edward M. Kennedy Jr., age 12, had his right leg surgically amputated as a result of bone cancer. He underwent an experimental two-year drug treatment to cure the cancer. April 1, 1991 – William Kennedy Smith was arrested and charged with the rape of a young woman at the Kennedy estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The subsequent trial attracted extensive media coverage. Smith was acquitted. So like, if count duckula isn’t a child, is he like immortal and super old? Did he have parents who were a draculas too and they died? Did the guy who wants to kill him kill them or did they die in a plane crash.
