“THIS IS A SACRED PLACE”
by Lebo
Born to Cuban immigrant parents and raised in South Florida, David Le Batard, aka Lebo, works across a wide variety of creative mediums and has become one of Miami’s cadre of highly sought-after muralists. A self-described “innovator of Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism” he describes cartooning as a primordial form of expression and says even the hard-edged yet organic work of Picasso after 1905 embodies the very essence of cartooning. Only blocks from one of the nation’s most vibrant arts districts the fact that Wynwood’s Jose de Diego Middle School had seen all arts programming de-funded years before was deeply disturbing to many. When a new school principal and a community activist decided to correct the situation the inaugural Re-Imagining the Arts in Wynwood (RAW) Project was born in 2014, and Lebo joined the more than three dozen artists who stepped up that first year to support arts education in Wynwood. @leboart @therawproject_

A hand-full of these 1.25 inch @iamwynwood community pins will be available on Sunday at @jwakefieldbrewery during our Spring social community event. It promises to be an awesome time, lots of goodies in store, but it's important to stay focused on our reason for coming together. It is our sincere hope that conversations are struck, ideas float and Dr. April Williams + the children at #josedediegomiddleschool FEEL your support. It's not all financial, you see. There's a wonderul opportunity to volunteer time, talents and creative resources here and help the kids feel embraced. Belonging to something special can go a long way to build confidence and self-love. And we're striving to give the kids just that: a sense of belonging to the remarkable art community around them. “ALONZO MOURNING”
by Madsteez
USA Today high school player of the year in 1988, Alonzo Mourning played college ball for Georgetown, then in 1992 he was the second player drafted, right behind Shaq. Despite being temporarily sidelined for a kidney transplant, he enjoyed a 15-year career in the NBA, winning a championship in 2006 with the Miami Heat. In 2009 he was the first player to have their number retired by the Heat. Mourning and his charitable foundation have made huge impact on education in South Florida so it’s only appropriate that in late 2014 when the RAW Project first gathered artists to transform the Jose de Diego Middle School in Wynwood, Madsteez, aka Mark Paul Deren, was asked to paint this even-larger-than-life tribute. With the decline in arts education across the country in recent years, the donation of 38 murals by Madsteez and other highly respected artists helped first-year principal, Dr. April Thompson Williams, revive the schools arts programming. @madsteez @therawproject_ @wynwoodmiami @scenesfromthesidewalk
