Attending Art Basel & Exhibiting in Wynwood, December 2014.
In December, I went to Art Basel for this first time. I had always heard that after going, artists either work harder or feel a sense of helplessness when looking at the state of the modern art. The effect that this trip has had on me is that I was even more eager to create a voice for people who were not represented. There were many male artists that had shown. There are statistics that show the demographic that galleries happen to represent most are men with children. The least represented are, as you can imagine, women with children. At an international art show, I was happy to see that the commentary behind the commentary was national, but where was the East? I did find a Syrian artist's work where he was filmed destroying a miniature replica of his house as a commentary on the effect of war in Syria. There was a sophistication about how people chose to comment on what they knew. Orientalism was not prevalent as I have seen in local art shows. Maybe we could learn about respecting others through these massive art shows with a broad audience.
After this weekend, I felt even more confused about how excessive narcissism has pushed itself into what the people want. I asked myself why crowds were formed around the large chrome sculptures or the works with giant LED lights forming words like "I", "myself", or "#selfie". It was interesting to see that amongst all of the beautiful intricate paintings that I found alluring. There is no doubt that the actual convention felt like a visual overload. It was a daunting task to make sure that all of the art was seen. But this visual overload was something I have never experienced to this degree. Saturday, from early morning to when the convention closed that night, we must have seen several thousand pieces of art. I was interested in knowing how works were made as oppose to why they were there, which I have heard endlessly at any art show. Perspective is everything.
Our schedule was this. We arrived in Miami from Tampa, at night and drive directly to the Wynwood Art District. This area represents local galleries and international artists, who are beckoned to do murals on the Wynwood Walls. Walking through this area, the sidewalks were crowded, beer was spilled in the raingutters, and breakdancers were performing as we weaved in and out of small galleries. It was surreal to see many of my favorite artists' work in real life. I saw the work of SWOON, who I met in Tallahassee two years ago.

^ Picture with a detail of Swoon's work on the Wynwood Walls.
Seeing the work of Sheppard Fairey (Obama HOPE painting) was surreal at the Library Street Collective gallery.

^ My dear friend, Sarah, next to Sheppard Fairey work on the Wynwood Walls.
Tumblr media
^We then walked over to the Wynwood Lofts, where four of my works were on display.((  Refer to last blog post ;)  ))
Tumblr media
^ Inside Projects Gallery, where I displayed my work, with 200 paintings.
Tumblr media
^ Finding my work there felt like finding an old friend or finding home in a crowded place.
Tumblr media
^ A sample picture I took while packing these to be shipped, check out the blogpost under this one to see these in full.
Tumblr media
^ I have been debating putting this piece up. I had a notebook with the names of every artist I loved. Somehow the name of artist of this piece, fell threw the cracks. I honestly wish I knew. Such a beautiful sentiment.
Tumblr media
^My notebook and pen in hand, looking at the work of a new favorite, Kelsey Brookes at the Library Street Collective.
Tumblr media
^ Incredibly beautiful sight that broke any feeling of monotony. Works by Gerardo Hacer at the Library Street Collective. (As you can tell by now, that gallery was the place to be.)
MIAMI CONVENTION CENTER// (Actual Art Basel location)
