Look at this Napoleon 🥺😩
Tumblr media
(Daniel Mesguich in Joséphine ou la comédie des ambitions)
Rating: Cute!
Napoleons often express affection with touch! This Napoleon is perhaps feeling sad, but he's cuddling either out of affection or as a method of comfort. My one question is why he appears to be wearing eyeliner. Don't test makeup products on your Napoleons!

@microcosme11 I strongly apologise for tagging you on this brand new post, but 'Tumblr' cannot send my message to you. I shall paste it here:
"Sorry, my previous message could not be sent. I shall try sending it again. Here it is : I have just discovered that "Joséphine Ou La Comédie Des Ambitions" is on 'Dailymotion'. All five episodes were posted by a passionate user in their original format from their 'D.V.D.' copy. You can also use a 'website' to download each video on your device. Here is the 'link' to the first episode: https://dai.ly/x8pifqw and this one is for the 'Dailymotion' 'Downloader' 'website' : https://en.savefrom.net/10-how-to-download-dailymotion-video-50.html . Awwww... That is so sweet! I have first fallen in love with him when I was twelve years old when I found one of my Dad's history magazines in the living room. His painting was printed on the back cover and it was more than love at first sight... I was in pure awe. This was the painting:"

That French dude who died at St Helena on the back of a whale 😜
✰ What made you fall in love with them?
He was a soldier who became the Emperor of the French, contributed to the grandeur of France and conquered much of Europe, how badass is that?
✰ Favorite anecdote involving them?
My absolute favourite one includes Fortuné, Joséphine’s dog. She loved her dog so much she would let him sleep with her in her bed, which was a problem for Napoléon. He ended up being a rival with this dog. It also didn’t help Fortuné was a gift from a former lover of Joséphine and Napoléon was quite a jealous man. My favourite story, which I never fail to tell, took place during Napoléon and Joséphine’s wedding night. Napoléon wanted to go to bed to join his beloved, only Fortuné didn’t agree with that and decided he didn’t want to share the bed with this intruder. So he ended up bitting Napoléon’s leg. When Napoléon expressed how displeased he was, Joséphine basically told him either he accepted Fortuné’s presence in the bedroom, or Napoléon would have to sleep elsewhere!
✰ Your favorite thing about them?
He was a skilled and ambitious man who started as a soldier and rose through the ranks before becoming the Emperor. I also love the fact that, being from Corsica, he used to hate France but came to love his country and made it a great empire until his defeat at Waterloo.
✰ Your least favorite thing about them?
Beside the fact he divorced Joséphine and that they didn’t have children, I… dislike the fact he made slavery legal and many horrible things happened during the Napoléonic Wars. Unlike some people, I wouldn’t compare Napoléon to Hitler, while I know the man wasn’t a saint and his wars caused terrible things, he was nothing like Hitler!
Also, this isn’t about a thing he did but it’s a pet peeves of mine: HE. WAS. NOT. SHORT. His height was actually average during the time!
✰ Best books about them?
I have not yet found a good biography about him, but I quite enjoyed Max Gallo’s books about him!
✰ Favorite place associated with them?
His childhood home in Corsica.
✰ Who do you ship them with?
Joséphine de Beauharnais, of course! She was his lucky star, the love of his life, and even though he had to divorce her, she still held a place in his heart.
✰ Favorite friendship?
I… actually don’t have one yet.
✰ Favorite outfit?
This one, because classic is classic!
✰ Favorite event they were involved with?
His campain in Egypt. While it wasn’t a success in military matters, it was one for the cultural field! I also love his coronation in Notre Dame and when he staged a coup on the crumbling and messy Directoire.
✰ Favorite portrayal in film, television, etc? If there isn’t one, who could play them?
I loved Christian Clavier’s portrayal of him in the mini-série Napoléon, though the actor who played him in Joséphine ou la Comédie des Ambitions was quite great and handsome too :p
Tumblr media
Look how great he looks!
✰ Favorite quote about them?
I don’t have one yet!
✰ Favorite quote by them?
“Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
✰ Three random facts about them?
* He said that, if Tsar Alexander was a woman, he would have totally courted him.
* When he invaded Egypt, the Egyptians wanted to get in his good favor, so they sent him two teenage girls to use as he pleased. Being madly in love with Joséphine, he refused. The Egyptian ministers have misunderstood his refusal as they send back two young boys.
* He once played a prank on Hortense’s boy (Hortense being Joséphine’s daughter), the future Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte aka Napoléon III, by taking his egg when he wasn’t looking. Most displeased, Louis-Napoléon took his knife and threatened his uncle to give him back his egg or he would kill him. Clearly amused and maybe even impressed, Napoléon gave him back his egg and told him “You will be a fine fellow.”
✰ Favorite picture/painting of them?
Hum... I do love this one and this one as well!
(I didn’t answer the five remaining questions because I have honestly no idea about how to answer ^^;)

Got any recommendations for more Napoleon movies? I really want to try watching another one after getting high off Waterloo.
Sure, but you’re in for the long haul on this post!
Now keep in mind not everything I’ll mention is Napoleon-centric. The vast majority of the media I consume involving my favorite gremlin man isn’t meant to be about him at all. Also remember I’m not always here for history, sometimes accuracy must be sacrificed for a good time! Nevertheless, I’ll try to find some films close to being like Waterloo in terms of history-ness.
For some history, we have:
Napoléon
Tumblr media
First shown in 1927, Napoléon is a silent film that I’ve come to appreciate. Not only was it fucking revolutionary for its camerawork at the time, but Albert Dieudonné also makes a fantastic gremlin man. I mean just look at the pure DRAMA on this man’s face! Would recommend, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Monsieur N.
Tumblr media
Jumping ahead a few decades, Monsieur N. is a 2003 film about Napoleon’s last years. There’s a good bit of both French and English, and I found versions with captions! It also includes a good bit of conspiracies surrounding Napoleon’s death, always a nice touch!
Austerlitz
Tumblr media
To the 1960s! Austerlitz is, as you might have already guessed, a film about the gremlin man’s victory at Austerlitz. It’s so damn 60s and I love it to death. La Marche d’Austerlitz is also one of my all-time favorite compositions and I get giddy whenever I hear it! Jean Ledrut made a fantastic piece, at least in my opinion.
Now for a few things not totally pertaining to your question, but I liked them enough to share!
Joséphine ou la Comédie des ambitions
Tumblr media
Listen. I love this series. I don’t speak French but was enamored the entire time. Look at him. Look at Daniel Mesguich as Napoleon. He’s everything I could have ever wanted. Is this series about Josephine? Yes. Am I in it for my mans? Abso-fucking-lutely.
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Tumblr media
I know, I know! This movie is not even close to being about my mans! I’m not going to kid when I say I added this because Alain Chabat is such a funny Napoleon I was grinning in every scene he was in! I know this is a far cry from a masterpiece of a film, but it’s been a feel-good movie for me since I was small. This (along with my endless love for Assassin’s Creed: Unity) is what sparked my interest in Napoleon in the first place! Watch Night at the Museum, make serotonin, have fun with your history!
So, in conclusion, I may watch too much history stuff. I spent my day losing my shit at Geoffrey Rush in Quills and it isn’t even the weekend. I’ll leave you with a picture of a disheveled and disappointed-looking Charlie Chaplain as Napoleon.
