He was one of the greatest protagonists of European painting of the seventeenth century and one of the most important painters who followed the trend of caravaggism. Together with other painters of the century, such as Luca Giordano, Francesco Solimena, Massimo Stanzione, Mattia Preti, Aniello Falcone, Salvator Rosa, Bernardo Cavallino, Battistello Caracciolo and Fabrizio Santafede, he was one of the most important exponents of Neapolitan painting.
