About the last hours and Dickens’ great expectations (spoilers for both):

I first read great expectations after I found out it was the story the last hours series were inspired from, and although that book completely captivated me by how beautifully it was written, how Dickens has managed to make misery seem so lovely, I couldn’t help but try to make connections between the two stories in order to predict the fate of the TLH’s characters.

Now your first and most obvious impression out of comparing the two, is that Cassie has based Grace’s character on Estella, the girl who grew up in a house full shadows with clocks that have long ago stopped working. And then, you get to notice how she re-imagined the love that has bound Pip to Estella with a magic bracelet around James’ s wrist. It’s like it was her own way of re-imagining that miserable and inexplicable love that Pip had for Estella as a force of magic that bound him to her, and that he had no control on it whatsoever.

However, the more I think about these two stories the more that I suspect that the similarities between them go beyond just that. When you read great expectations, you think that Pip is sort of in love with the wrong person, because she never showed him any kind of affection, and more also he was miserable around her for he always feared deep down that he will never have her.

The reason why I associate this with TLH is because the most surprising thing for me when I read Chain of Gold is that I noticed that a lot of characters were in love with the wrong person such as Alastair with Charles, Matthew with both Cordelia and Lucie, and obviously James with Grace. And I know that this should not be a surprise in the beginning of a series that characters have it wrong but the thing is, when it comes to love stories in TSC, Cassie had always (except for some few cases) made the love choices for her characters so obvious, nephilim love once and they love fiercely, so it was surprising for me to see her make her characters in this case fall in and out of love multiple times, or experience what we may call a “wrong love”.

That’s where I think the inspiration of Great expectations comes from, the whole life story of Pip was defined by the force of a wrong love, and I can’t help but wonder how far will Cassie let her own versions of wrong love go. Will she let that love rule their lives like Dickens let it rule Pip’s? or will she make her characters conquer it? For me, I hope it’s the latter as I am a sucker for Jordelia and Thomstair and I want them to have a happy ending so badly, but part of me fears that we’ll see a similar ending to that of Great expectations, and also knowing how Cassie can be ruthless with her characters sometimes my fear only grows deeper.

I'm not sure here. I wanted Tatiana to die because she's gross but she's one of the villains, I didn't really expected it.

27. which pairing do you like the least? is it different from chog?

I think it's Cordelia & Matthew. I was indifferent in CHOG but in COI it really bothered me how rude was Matthew to Alastair in Cordelia's presence and she finding it 'charming'. And how in the end she came to him emotionally vulnerable and he decided in this is a good moment to confess his love for her - it was selfish and a little manipulative. Plus he's bright reminder to Cordelia about her father's alcoholism and almost every time she looks at him she thinks about his similarities with Elias. I kind of just want Matthew to stay away from her.

28. what are some theories you have for chain of thorns?

I think I'm still a little overwhelmed by COI and can't think rational about COT to come up with theories. Maybe only that Cordelia gave Cortana to Alastair. (More likely she asked him to hide it or keep it safe because I don't believe Alastair will accept Cortana like that). Ooohhh, and that in the end Grace (and probably Christopher) will safe the day. She will need a good ass redemption to be forgiven by, well, a lot of people and I hope if she saves them this would work.
