‘The Ash Fields’ - Happy to be able to share my contribution to the upcoming inaugural group show, ‘LIGHTNING BOLTS & LITTLE SPARKS‘ with WOWXWOW. Starting on 2nd June 2017 the WOWXWOW online gallery launches with this first show featuring new works from over 90 participating artists from around the world.

My contribution one of a new series of works for me and is a new one off hand embellished painting on cotton rag stock, mounted on board, varnished and framed.16.3 x 20.5" including frame, the piece will be available via the WOWXWOW site from the 2nd June. Bitter Days rough draft chapter 1, yeehaw!!

actually it’s more like “subsection of beginning section of chapter 1″ but whatever

for those not in the know (which i think is everyone except my longtime mutuals who’ve had to put up with complainy PM conversations about this thing for years), Bitter Days is a fantasy novel I’ve been trying to write for like....a decade now lol. Premise: earthquakes, superstorms, and other disasters suddenly begin wracking the backwater imperial colonies on a small northern island. fearing magical causes, the Kair (king) of the southern colony, or prefecture, sends imperial troops to the mage monastery in the northern prefecture, to investigate whether it could be a fluke caused by natural magical fluctuations in the environment or those nasty sorcery-using barbarian islanders who are probably up to something manmade.

It wasn’t yet noon, and already darkness was creeping across the sky. My mare Heshaani whickered deep in her chest, her ears flicking; I leaned forward to rub her withers with a reassuring hand, though I couldn’t help but share her unease.

“Do you think another storm is coming?” Amani asked me.

I turned to her, taking in her drawn face and the deep shadows under her eyes. I knew I must look the same.

“Who knows?” Jophen replied for me, swiveling in his saddle to look back at us. “All we can hope is that it doesn’t tear the earth apart under us.”

Keeping my voice pitched low so our captain couldn’t hear, I retorted, “If you keep speaking that way, it will.”

His shoulders rose but he didn’t say anything. Clouds closed in overhead, hanging low and brooding above the trees that lined the sides of the road. A growl of thunder set the horses’ tails switching.

A wave of tiredness passed through me. We’d been on the road for three days now, having crossed the border into the Kirithi prefecture early on the second day. Each day had been spent riding at a forced march, only stopping far after the sun set to eat a hasty meal of cold rations, and snatch a few restless hours of sleep on the grassy verge. Then we would awaken in the dark to ride till after nightfall yet again. Everyone’s nerves were stretched thin, and tensions had been rising between us since before dawn.

Ahead, Captain Kalani raised her fist—a sign for our attention. She called out, “We just passed the waymarker for Tir Alamara. If all goes well we should reach the monastery before sunset.”

Even as she spoke, lightning lanced its way across the sky. The first few drops of rain hit my forehead, cold against my sweaty skin. I pulled the hood of my cloak over my head with my free hand as the rainfall blossomed into a downpour, its patter on the leaves of the trees around us deafening. Far-off thunder rumbled deep in my guts. And was it only a trick of my tired mind, or did the earth beneath Heshaani’s hooves quake along with it?
