So this was the end of a live comedy sketch show tonight. I am so proud of this man, Jono Pryor, for speaking up about mental health issues, and showing the strength he did to do so. As someone suffering a mental illness I have immense respect for Jono and his message. Get help if you need it guys, if I wasn’t already seeking help I reckon this would’ve convinced me.

Three unpopular opinions, oh boy. (if they could be considered such I guess)

- Fire Emblem really should just give up on the avatar/player unit/my unit characters. They don’t add anything to the story, and in some cases can take away from the story becuase of how the plot and other characters need to pander to the presence of the avatar unit. It happened for Fates, to a lesser extent for Awakening, and it probably will for Three Houses. 

- Madelyne Pryor would have made Scott a better long-term life partner than either Jean or Emma. 

- Jono/Doug is the best pairing and Marvel is too non-galaxy brain to ever let them share the same book.

This is the first of two shows. The previous women in blues shows did not feature the whole show in its entirely so tonight we fix that! On August 1 2014 The Blues Army of Des Moines in cooperation with the Hull Ave (owned then by Thomas Morris) put on its first Women in Blues Show. Tonight we listen to the first hour of the show. We start with the house band the Bad Boys of the Blues (Tom Gary, Jon East, Norman Sue, and Scotty Hartung) then in order April May, Barb Baker Miller, Michelle Baldwin, Bluebird Page with Jean Marie, and Krista Haugland, and Madam Jules! This show was a lot of fun and a lot of work to recreate. I had to search for all the tracks, and try to piece together which came first. special thanks to Lee Bell who not only recorded the shows, but left me hints on the tracks on where they belonged. the results of random woolgathering about what similarities crop up in teh characters that I like. 

Like, there are some characters that you look at and they insta-hit you so hard that it hurts from how good it is to go “this character is like me” and I hit that sudden euphoric feeling with Lukas from Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia. Lukas uses the same language that I have used in the past, has the same worries I have had about feeling the full depth of an emotion. 

A mind water later and I’m suddenly wondering about characters that I like in general and what generally attracts me to certain characters and/or character types. a partial list of characters that I love: Python (Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia), Zevran (Dragon Age series), Jono “Chamber” Starsmore (Marvel Comics), Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho), Madelyne Pryor (Marvel Comics), Lukas (Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia). 

So from this sampling, aside from Madelyne and (probably) Lukas, the characters are all written to speak/look a certain way, but their actions and further characterization show something that is fundamentally opposite of what the first impression leaves you with. Jono, for example, has a first impression of this “i don’t care about anyone, let alone myself” persona all dressed in leather and self-loathing, but as he interacts with his teammates and the adventures that Generation X goes through, and further after Gen X breaks up, he constantly steps up to the plate when the chips are down and he shows that he cares so fucking much about other people. Zevran is the flirty assassin, seemingly so full of himself and constantly cheery, but as you delve into his character and his past you find that it’s a mask fro some truly painful, horrifying shit that he had to go through. Python creates this image of being Lazy, but he has a great work ethic and is far more observant that he lets on. Kurama is a study in opposites, being both the super sweet and gentle mama’s boy AND the takes no prisoners, gives no mercy strategean at the same time.

 Madelyne and Lukas end up being outliers to the others, in that their characterizations lend a deeper, more nuanced look to their first impression, rather than a characterization directly contradicting that first impression. 

now as for why I mostly like characters who contradict their first impressions.... I guess it’s also becuase that’s how I feel I am? I dress pretty conservatively, and talk a lot about how I’m this “in the closet” goth (but now I have this bat decoration that the GF brought with her and I love it.) I’m pretty quiet and nervous on first interaction, and if people come on too strong too quickly I shut down and just shy away hard, especially if I’m out of social fuel. But other times you just can’t get me to shut up about certain topics (comics, the games I like, literary analysis) and I don’t know where that switch is from “hiding behind my book” to “let me gab at you for five hours about this semi-obscure TTRPG”. 

... so yeah. it’s probably a thing with finding a vague similarity. but id where I was all going with this now... I’m tired and playing Dream Daddy.
