It is no wonder
The superego, constituted through dependence on the family, is the psychological correlate of the Absolute. The Absolute signifies completion, totality, and perfection, and has no tolerance for failure to live up to these principles. This is why unhappy consciousness is besieged by judgment, guilt, hostility, and anguish: it is always at odds with itself—its own ideal. In its quest for perfection, spirit is truly neurotic, because it pursues the ideal with obsessive compulsive tenacity. Freud refers to the superego as the source of “moral anxiety” (Gewissenangst) (SE, 22, 62), a condition not unlike unhappy consciousness as the beautiful soul. In its contemplative morality, spirit becomes a “lost soul.” “In this transparent purity of its moments, an unhappy, so-called ‘beautiful soul’, its light dies away within it, and it vanishes like a shapeless vapour that dissolves into thin air” (PS § 658). The beautiful soul is homeless and empty because it only thinks and judges, but does not act. Hegel tells us that unhappy spirit, while in its state of being lost, engages in a defensive retreat similar to that of stoic withdrawal:“[I]n order to preserve the purity of its heart, it flees from contact with the actual world” (PS § 658). While internally pure, the beautiful soul is impotent and hollow.
We may easily appreciate how Hegel’s depiction of the throes of self-consciousness corresponds to Freud’s notions of psychic conflict and pain. Like the ego, which fights to transcend the id, desire is sublated in recognition. The superego becomes the paragon for idealization, judgment, guilt, and punishment, just as unhappy spirit strives to overcome its internal division of purity and sin. Unhappy consciousness has the added onus of combating its cruel and unjust enslavement, which it must overcome in order to be truly free. Hence, spirit must sublate nature—its confinement to the natural soul, the austere conditions of an unequal society, the self-condemnation of its own inadequacy, and the lure of its own inclinations and passions that threaten to derail its pursuit of liberated self-articulated rational freedom. It is here that Freud’s insight is most appropriate: “[W]e see [the] ego as a poor creature owing service to three masters and consequently menaced by three dangers: from the external world, from the libido of the id, and from the severity of the super-ego” (SE, 19, 56). It is no wonder that unhappy consciousness is plagued by anxiety.

of division and alienation
What becomes of spirit when it can’t effect its transition to reason, when it can’t relinquish its quest for unchangeable individuality, when it can’t let go of its being that has vanished—its nothingness? What is abnormal in unhappy consciousness is also what is normal, that is to say normative, namely, irrationality and psychic pain. Self-consciousness endures a poignant internal contradiction and suffering that cannot be overcome. The torment of division and alienation, the withdrawal from the world into the self, the obsessional fixation of the confused and dizzy refutation of reality, the self-sacrifice and denial—these are the shapes of the lost soul. When self-consciousness is unable to make its transition to reason, it remains fixated within the irrational, within the life of feeling, and is inclined to regress to the nostalgic recovery of its earlier lost unity, a withdrawal back into the interior of the soul. This becomes the domain of spiritual psychopathology. Spirit devoid of reason is an incomplete or diseased spirit, what Hegel sees as madness, even though madness has its own reasons.

25 Women Who Rock Digital Marketing – Nominated by Men
2017 marks the 8th year we’ve published a list featuring “women who rock” in the digital marketing space. I started the list in 2010 with social media specifically and after 5 years handed the reins over to Ashley Zeckman for a few years when the focus has broadened to digital marketing.
In the past I would ask each years’ honorees to nominate someone for the following year and so on. Following that we started ranking the huge list of women in marketing that we had compiled over the years using Traackr’s influencer marketing software.
In 2017 I’m making another change: to ask influential men in the marketing industry to nominate women who are leading in the marketing world.  I thought this was a timely and relevant way to help male leaders in our industry shine a light on their female counterparts, peers, superiors or subordinates.
The response from those who have shared nominations including multiple from Seth Godin has been great. I can’t thank the CEOs, VPs and Entrepreneurs enough who took time during the holidays to share nominees and their reasons why.
Interestingly, less than a third of the men I reached out to replied at all. In previous years when I have reached out to women, more than 75% would respond. I don’t know whether the holidays affected responses, but I didn’t get many “out of office” emails, so maybe it was something else.
Of greater importance is that this is a topic of interest to me and based on the response over the past 7 years, it is definitely of interest to our community. Below you’ll find a combination of familiar names and some that will likely be new. That’s what makes lists like this special – to find new talent, smarts and engagement amongst people you might not otherwise learn about.
A few notes: this list is not sorted in any particular order and along with the name of the nominee and credentials, I’ve included the name of the person nominating them and why. Enjoy!
Bernadette Jiwa @bernadettejiwa is Author of Thestoryoftelling.com
Bernadette was nominated by Seth Godin @ThisIsSethsBlog – Founder at altMBA. “Bernadette has written one bestseller after another, highlighting the real work of marketing. It’s not about manipulating clicks, it’s about doing work that matters.”
Porter Gale @portergale is SVP of Partnerships at Globality Inc
Porter was nominated by Brian Solis @briansolis – Principal Analyst at Altimeter, a Prophet co. “I first met Porter when she was CMO of Virgin America. To this day, she inspires me with her humility and her drive to learn what’s next and apply it in places that are out of the proverbial “CMO” spotlight. She works with startups and big brands alike, but always with the same hunger and desire to help. To this day, she inspires me.”
Nancy Duarte @nancyduarte is Principal at Duarte, Inc.
Nancy was nominated by Brian Halligan @bhalligan – CEO at HubSpot. “Nancy has made true science out of how to convince people through the presentation format.

To this day, she inspires me with her humility and her drive to learn what’s next and apply it in places that are out of the proverbial “CMO” spotlight.
