Cine: Dulce amistad (1996)

En un principio fue la pieza teatral de Jonathan Harvey, estrenada en 1993; luego, el mismo Harvey se encargaría de adaptarla a la gran pantalla y la película, bajo la batuta de Hettie McDonald, se dio a conocer en 1996. Y no tardó en convertirse, muy en su derecho, en un clásico instantáneo.

Jamie Gangel (Glen Berry) y Ste Pearce (Scott Neal) son vecinos, viven en el mismo complejo edilicio en Thamesmead (Sur de Londres) y provienen de familias conflictuadas. Sandra (Linda Henry) ha dedicado su vida a trabajar para mantenerse junto a su hijo Jamie, cuya procedencia paternal es desconocida. Quizás sea algo rústica en sus tratos, pero la mujer demuestra la valía de su corazón al admitir en su hogar por un tiempo a Ste, que padece de forma contínua los abusos de su padre Ronnie (Garry Cooper) y su hermano Trevor (Daniel Bowers). Ocasión que sorprende a Jamie y que, sin embargo, convierte una relación de dulce amistad (tal el título otorgado en Latinoamérica) en algo más intenso y entrañable.

Sería injusto que nos olvidáramos de mencionar a dos personajes esenciales de la historia: Tony (Ben Daniels), el nuevo novio de Sandra, y la fenomenal Leah Russell (Tameka Empson), la más que inoportuna, entrometida y molesta (y también acreedora de una fama de “rápida”) vecina adolescente del grupo ya mencionado. Todos artífices de una historia que ya ha entrado en la puerta grande del cine concerniente a la temática LGBTQ.
