KNOCK AT THE CABIN REVIEW
What would you do if you had to decide on one of your family members to die to prevent the end of the world? The new M. Night Shyamalan thriller "Knock at the Cabin" asks that very question.
Four armed strangers break into the cabin of a married couple and their adopted daughter to persuade them to avert the apocalypse by the sacrifice of one of the three family members. The strangers cannot kill or make the choice for them, but how much of what they're being told is actually the truth?
"Knock at the Cabin" has a very interesting premise with very engaging performances all around. The trio family feels connected and real while the strangers are conveyed very sympathetically even when trying to convey their intentions through threats. Dave Batista is the movie's breakout performance as the soft-spoken, yet intimidating leader.
The biggest issue with Knock at the Cabin is how it never leaves audiences knowing or connecting to any of the characters or story progression. For instance, the four strangers talk about these visions they all are seeing and how they are connected, which is far less interesting than seeing glimpses of these visions or how fate pushes them together. Instead of gradually learning about each stranger through their actions, the movie halts to a stop to have each of them step forwards and verbally give character exposition.
As for the family, periodically there are flashbacks to their history as a family. However, aside from one that indicates why one of them is more aggressive, all the flashbacks convey very little new information. They're not unlikeable to wish them any harm, but not interesting enough to really care about their outcome.
A suspenseful thriller like "Knock in the Cabin" relies heavily on a satisfying conclusion, which the film does not have. For the multiple predictions to make on how the movie could end, Shyamalan chooses the most anti-climatic and meaningless conclusions. While the original novel "The Cabin at the End of the World", which the movie is based on, has a bleaker and more open-ended ending, it would have been welcome compared to the movie's ending which leaves audiences feeling nothing.
"Knock at the Cabin" felt like a waste of time. There's nothing truly interesting or engaging that makes it worth a watch. The performances are well done and the concept has potential for thrills, but the execution is simply not there.
5/10

Quotes from interviews with Ben Aldridge at EW and Variety. The Variety quotes are taken from an interview on Spotify with Marc Malkin, in which Ben talks about a lot about Jonathan (and will be summarised shortly).
It was during that time in 2017 when he found Looking, the HBO drama about a group of gay friends living in San Francisco. It also happened to star Groff, Aldridge's future Knock at the Cabin costar.
"Looking was one of my favorite TV shows," he exclaims. "I remember thinking that it wasn't very well supported. They came under fire for not representing the entire [LGBTQ] community, of which we have the most community. It's hard to tick all those boxes." Aldridge admits it sounds sad, but, while working on Our Girl, the friends on Looking felt like his own. "I was like, 'I need some gay friends.' I put that on and it really helped me. I didn't yet have my own gay community. That taught me what I could potentially have in friendship."
Aldridge initially thought he was leading the film [Knock at the Cabin] with Bautista, not Groff, who hadn't been cast yet. "All it said on the email that I got was Dave Batista was in the film. So I was doing this entire audition thinking I was auditioning to be his younger boyfriend and that Dave was gonna be this total daddy gay bear," he recalls with some slight embarrassment. "I remember saying to Night in an actor-y way, 'I've never seen Dave play a part like this kind of sensible father figure before. It feels like a real departure.' He was like, 'What are you saying? ... Dave isn't playing Eric. Are you mad?' It really affected the way I was playing the scenes. A little bit like, 'Hey, daddy!'"
Bautista laughs when he hears this story. "I can tell you it would've been not as good because there's no way I could have tackled that role the way Jonathan Groff did," he says.
Aldridge had been aware of Groff's work for some time, even before he first watched Looking. He remembers auditioning for the actor's part in a West End production of Spring Awakening. Aldridge went through about 12 rounds over the course of a year when he was 21, culminating in a week-long workshop in which two sets of casts performed the entire musical front to back. Producers then cherry-picked which actors from each set they wanted for the roles.
"I didn't get it," Aldridge says, "which actually, really seriously is the most gutted I've ever felt about not getting something." He still looks back on that experience with at least some fondness. Listening to Groff in the original cast recording taught Aldridge how to sing the music.
Variety
As for divas, Aldridge’s ultimate is Barbra Streisand. He recently watched “The Way We Were,” the classic 1973 drama starring Streisand and Robert Redford, for the first time. When I suggest Aldridge star in a queer remake of the Sydney Pollack-directed film, I ask him who should play the other leading man. “Jonathan Groff. He’s giving you Robert Redford,” he says. “Obviously, I’m Barbra.”

It sounds like you're a big fan of WWE and Stone Cold Steve Austin! You're referencing a specific event, Taboo Tuesday, where the McMahons were trying to have Austin lose to Jonathan Coachman, but Batista ended up taking Austin's place and winning a 3-on-1 match against Coachman, Goldust, and Vader. That must have been an exciting moment for you! It's great to see how invested you are in the storylines and characters of WWE. Do you have a favorite WWE era or superstar? 🤼

Jonathan Coachman Recalls Punishment For Not Traveling To WWE Event In Afghanistan
Read More Wrestling Inc. Jonathan Coachman recalled attacking The Undertaker from the back, following which “The Phenom” apologized before giving him a beatdown. But Vince McMahon and co. were keen on adding to Coach’s misery that night as Batista was then sent down to the ring to attack him as well. “And so like the team player that I am, I go over, I attack the Undertaker, he turns around,…

So yeah we went to see M. Night Shyamalan's new masterpiece the ominous Knock at the Cabin. I don't want to say too much about it being I don't want to ruin anything or give anything away. but I did like it I thought it was great it wasn't really scary it was creepy and I guess it could be kinda scary it was more situational horror in a way like I think it would be terrifying if you were in that situation. I felt it was more intense then anything like it was that slow burn type of thing where it keeps building the tension as the movie goes on.
As you probably know the basic story of the movie is this family rents out like a cabin for the weekend or whatever out in the middle of the woods. They are on a weekend get away or on vacation and then 4 random strangers show up and force their way inside and bring with them a message that someone inside the cabin must be sacrificed to prevent the end of the world and for each time they refuse a cataclysmic event will happen.
The way its written is really nice it gives you a bit of doubt in who these strangers are, like there are moments where you think that this is real and they are telling the truth but there is others that just makes them seem totally crazy. You don't get to know much about the strangers other then what they tell you about themselves it could be the truth or it could be just lies you never know..
you do know to know more about the family that was staying there though you get to lean about them through a series of flash backs. Who they are, how they met, how they adopted their daughter and how they ended up at the cabin.
I thought the acting in this was great especially from Dave Bautista (or Batista as I know him) who plays Leonard the some what leader of the group of strangers his gentle calmness alone comes off as extremely disturbing through out the movie but but Batista does shine in this role as does everyone else especially Kristen Cui who plays the adopted daughter and the others Ben Aldridge and Jonathan Groff Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abby Quinn and even Rupert Grint were all amazing
so like I said I liked it and I thought it was good and I would probably recommend it like if you are interested in seeing it then I would recommend seeing it.
