First Christmas
12 Days of Christmas: Day 6
Plot: You decide Jonas deserves to experience his first Christmas, so you want to make it special.
Pairing: Jonas Quinn x Gn!Reader
Warnings: None!
Words: 1.5k
-
You grinned to yourself as you made your way down the corridors, towards Jonas's room. Your arms were full of boxes and bags as you barely managed to make your way down the halls without running into anything or anyone.
Ever since Jonas learned about Christmas and the evolution of the Earth holiday, he was excited to experience the holiday season. But, since Jonas was still not allowed to leave the base, you decided you were going to bring Christmas to him.
Getting to his door, you realized your hands were too full, so you stuck out your leg and kicked the door a few times.
After a few moments, the door slid open, revealing a perplexed, yet smiling Jonas.
"Y/n, what is all this?
As you made your way past him and into his room, you smiled "Christmas!"
"Christmas?" He asked confused, yet intrigued.
You set the boxes down, sighing with relief as you did. "Yes, I decided since you don't get to experience what Christmas looks like outside of the base, I was going to try and recreate it for you as best I could, inside."
You saw realization and excitement cross his face as he looked down at the boxes. "Where did all this stuff come from?"
"I got some of it from storage at my place, and some was donated by others. So I'm not all too sure about what's in here." Reaching in, you started pulling some stuff out "Tinsel, garland, your very own stocking, mistle-" picking up the mistletoe, you figured Jack threw it in as a joke. "Well, other stuff." You stood up and smiled "But, there is one more thing, I'll be right back!"
As you raced out of Jonas's room, he watched you go with a smile. Looking back into the box, he picked up the green foliage
"Mistle?" He asked himself, having heard what you muttered.
Shrugging, he pulled out the sparkling red tinsel and smiled as he looked around his room, wondering where he was supposed to put it.
His face was warm as his heart continued to beat happily in his chest. This was more than he was expecting. But it was you after all, you were always thinking of everyone else. It was one of his favorite things about you.
After a few minutes, he heard another knock on his door. Letting you in, he watched as you dragged a tree into his room.
Jonas smiled widely "You got me a Christmas tree?"
You nodded "There are ornaments in one of those boxes, and some lights! Sam and Teal'c are gonna come by later and help, we can all decorate it together."
"Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the biggest traditions, yes?" he asked while admiring the tree.
You nodded as you reached into the bag and pulled out a Santa hat. Stepping up to him, you put it on his head. "Merry Christmas Jonas."
He smiled down at you with his genuine delight, and you felt butterflies in your stomach.
"Thank you Y/n."
"Tomorrow at dinner we are going to be putting together a Christmas dinner, so you can try all the traditional Earth dishes."
His eyes lit up at this "That's wonderful. Really Y/n you didn't have to do this all for me. Though I assume it is also for Teal'c?"
"Somewhat for Teal'c yes, though, he is allowed to leave. He and Jack are going on a fishing trip. This is mostly for you Jonas, you deserve to have some Christmas cheer too."
He grinned at you, and you felt butterflies again. Looking down at your feet for a moment you cleared your throat before turning around.
"While we wait for Sam and Teal'c you want to start decorating the room?"
Jonas's kept his eyes locked on you as his chest burned warm. He nodded as he watched you start opening the boxes, his own butterflies rampaging in his stomach.
--- --- ---
The next day, as dinnertime grew closer, Jonas stood in the middle of his room, admiring the tree you had all decorated the previous day.
Sam and Teal'c showed up with hot chocolate, and you all spent the next hour decorating the tree. Jonas was given a star to put at the top, and he couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
Hearing a knock on the door, Jonas opened it, expecting to see you, but instead was met with Jack.
"Jonas."
"Colonel O'Niell, how are you?"
"I'm alright, heard you and the others had a good time decorating."
"Yes" Jonas grinned as he turned and looked back at his room.
Jack nodded his head, and smiled softly "Well, dinner is done, so I was sent to fetch you, come on, hop to, I'm hungry."
Jonas smiled and nodded, "Yes, Sir."
Jack smiled to himself as he held open Jonas's door and looked into the room, spotting the mistletoe sitting on the table. He smirked, he'd have to come back for that.
As they entered into the dining hall, Jonas smiled at the array of food being placed out like a buffet, another Earth tradition he enjoyed. Approaching the table, he noticed long cylinders. Grabbing one, he stared at it perplexed.
"It's called a Christmas Cracker." Sam said as she walked up to him. "Two people each grab one side and pull, the person who gets most of it wins. And gets the prizes inside."
"Prizes? So its similar to the wishbone tradition?"Jonas asked with piqued interest.
Sam nodded "We'll do them later and you'll see."
Jonas nodded with a smile his eyes landed on you as you came out of the kitchen with a casserole dish. Locking eyes with him you smiled, and he felt his chest clench.
When everyone sat down to eat, Jonas felt overwhelmed with gratefulness and glee. This was the first time he felt like this, he felt it somewhat during the Thanksgiving holiday, but you were right, Christmas was certainly different.
As an hour turned into two and most people had left, you and the others slowly rose to part for the night. Teal'c had left about twenty minutes earlier, Jack and Sam walked off together, leaving you and Jonas to walk back to his room.
"That was wonderful." Jonas said as you began walking together "I really enjoyed it."
You smiled happily up at him "I'm glad."
Jonas felt an anxious tightness in his chest, and he felt an object in his jacket pocket and a rush of nervousness washed over him. As you got closer, he was about to bring it up, but you spoke first.
You stopped and turned to him "Before we say goodnight, I wanted to give this to you."
Watching as you pulled out a similar wrapped object from your own pocket, Jonas felt his heart jolt in his chest.
Handing it to him, you smiled shyly.
Taking it he stared down at it for a moment "You got me a present?"
"Of course, that's an important part of Christmas."
Jonas smiled "Yes, I know." Reaching into his own pocket he pulled the object out and smiled at you "I got you one too."
Your face lit up with surprise as you took it slowly, you let out a soft chuckle. "Thank you Jonas."
Opening the presents at the same time, you were both amused by the fact you both got each other books.
Jonas gently ran his hand over the book you got him "World Traditions?"
"Since you seemed so interested in Christmas traditions, I thought you might like to learn about others around the world."
"That's wonderful, thank you."
Motioning at the book in your hands, Jonas spoke softly "That was one of my favorite books to read growing up on Kelowna. It has a lot of information about our own holidays and traditions, I thought since you shared yours with me, I might share some with you."
You grinned at him "Thank you Jonas, I'd love to learn about them." Looking back to the book you got him you mused "Great minds think alike."
Jonas smiled as the two of you continued down the corridor, both of you looking down at your new books with softy blushing smiles.
As your eyes landed on his door, you stopped in your tracks. Jonas looked from you to the door, his eyes landing on the plant hanging from above his door.
"Jack." You said with a knowing tone "His idea of a joke."
Jonas stepped up to the plant. "Mistletoe. I looked it up this morning, I wanted to know its importance to Christmas." He looked back at you, but his eyes avoided your gaze. "Originally, the tradition was that you could kiss anyone standing beneath the mistletoe. If the kiss was refused, bad luck befalls the person standing under the mistletoe."
You watched Jonas as he spoke, his eyes lingering on the Mistletoe, he was technically standing below. He had a tone to his voice that made you smile.
Taking hold of what courage you had, you walked up to him.
As Jonas turned to looking at you, you quickly stepped up and pressed a soft but quick kiss to his lips. You saw surprise cross his face as he stared at you speechless.
"Don't want you getting any of that bad luck."
Jonas was clearly bewildered, but you saw him repress a smile.
You smiled at him as you spoke softly "Merry Christmas Jonas."
He scratched the back of his neck before he spoke softly, clearly still baffled "Merry Christmas Y/n."
xx End xx
Sorry for the abrupt ending lol but I wasn't sure how else to end it without it starting to drag on

In Descent, Jonas Quinn risks his life to save SG-1 by swimming into a flooded section of the mothership and releasing the controls allowing our heroes access to the ship's landing bay. “Corin Nemec is able to hold his breath for over a minute-and-a-half, which surprised the hell out of all of us,” laughs producer Peter DeLuise, who also directed the episode. “I was holding my breath while watching him and I couldn't believe how long he was able to stay under the water.” Paul Mullie continues, “Peter shot this take that followed Corin all the way down the corridor. He swam into the room and started playing with these controls. Corin moved a bunch of discs around and then he swam around to the other side and did the same thing. It was one continuous shot and it lasted almost two minutes. We said, 'We have to use this shot. There is no way the audiences are going to believe that he did this unless we show an uninterrupted take. Unfortunately, one of the discs fell out of Corin's hand, so there's a moment in the episode where we had to cut away to do an insert. It's going to look like we tried to strech the scene out so that it would seem more heroic that his character stayed underwater for that long, but, in fact, Corin actually did.” (TV Zone Special #46)

Favourite SG1 whump for each character?
Ooh good question!
Jack O'Neill: I'm going to go with Message in a Bottle I think. Jack has a lot of good whump but him being pinned against the wall by a sharp long indestructible spike that then slowly infects him. It's amazing.
Daniel Jackson: oh my god how do I pick just ONE whump to be my favorite?!?!?! Talk about impossible!!! Oh man I think for right now I'm going to go with either Need or Legacy. Those are the two I watch over and over again. But god he's got so many great whumps. Other favs are definitely the First Ones when he's kidnapped by the Unas, Lifeboat when his mind is taken over by a bunch of different consciousness, The Light when his addiction turns in to depression and becomes suicidal and then nearly dies because of it all, Evolution part 2 when he's held captive shot in the leg and tortured. Sorry I can't pick just one lol
Samantha Carter: Hard to pick a Sam whump too. I'm going to say In The Line of Duty when she first gets possessed by Jolinar and it nearly kills her. Grace is also a really great Sam whump episode.
Teal'c: Oh this one is hard too. Avatar is a favorite. When he's trapped in the simulation that won't let him leave and he keeps dying and is exhausted and gives up. So good.
Jonas Quinn: When he nearly dies in Prophecy because he has a brain tumor giving him visions. That's good whump.
Vala Mal Doran: My favorite Vala whump moment is in Origin when she is burned alive. Vala doesn't have a lot of whump that I remember tbh.
Cameron Mitchell: A tie between Babylon and Collateral Damage. Babylon is great when he gets shot in the side. And i like the emotional whump in Collateral Damage when he has to relive those painful memories.

🥅 Jacob Markstrom leads the #NJDevils onto the ice in Vancouver. He’s your starter tonight against the #Canucks .
Arturs Silovs officially your goalie matchup in Vancouver.
#NJDevils starters versus #Canucks :
→Palat-Hughes-Bratt
→Siegenthaler-Kovacevic
→ Markstrom
Quinn and Jack Hughes are taking the ceremonial faceoff for Firefighter Night here in Vancouver.
It's one of Quinn's big charity involvements here in Vancouver.
First period
Nico! #NJDevils take the 1-0 lead early!
Kovacevic the last one to get a change on the PK... just played 1:30 straight
Great pressure from Ondrej Palat along the boards gets the puck out of the zone rather quickly and Canucks are forced to regroup.
Jack Hughes on the #NJDevils PK.
Absolutely outstanding work by the #NJDevils PKers who kill off the entire four minute penalty to Jesper Bratt.
Aggressive, used their sticks and kept the Canucks from registering a one shot.
#NJDevils are flying tonight.
Paul Cotter just hauled his butt up the ice on the backcheck and broke up a 3-on-2 heading towards Jacob Markstrom.
Ondrej Palat just made an excellent defensive play and ended up drawing a penalty.
Off-setting minors to Haula and Garland. So we're headed to 4v4.
Brett Pesce with the shot block 🔥 on a 3-on-1.
With 4.7 seconds left in the period the #NJDevils go to the PK. Siegenthaler off for a "trip".
End of one.
#NJDevils hold the 1-0 lead on the Canucks.
Who else but Nico?
🚨 Hischier (Mercer)
Shots 7-5, VAN
Second period
1:56 left in Jonas Siegenthaler's penalty.
2-0 Dawson Mercer
Siegenthaler is out of the box and rushes up the ice. His shot wires off the far post.
3-0 #NJDevils ! Timo Meier with an absolute SNIPE of a shot.
Tatar had all the time in the world alone in front of Silovs with the puck.
Fumbled it, however.
Erik Haula is dropping the gloves with Conor Garland and omg.
Erik Haula goes to the box with a huge smile on his face.
Both Haula and Garland will sit for five.
They just showed Erik Haula in the penalty box and the Canucks fans booed him. He looked up and blew them a kiss. 💀💀💀
The Canucks crowd are booing Luke Hughes (??) while he holds the puck behind the #NJDevils net.
Dillon wants a piece of Sherwood after a melee breaks out in front of Jacob Markstrom's net.
Some unreal saves by Markstrom in this game.
Now Dillon and Heinen are jawing at each other and Stefan Noesen is standing in the middle.
Erik Haula and Conor Garland are finally freed from their respective penalty boxes but now Paul Cotter is going in for roughing.
End of two in Van.
#NJDevils cruising along with a 4-0 lead.
1: 🚨Hischier (Mercer)
2:🚨 Mercer (Hischier) - SHG
2:🚨Meier (Hischier)
2:🚨Palat (Hamilton, J. Hughes)
Shots: 14-all
Third period
To the power play the #NJDevils go
Jack on the doorstep! #NJDevils take the 5-0 lead!
Tomas Tatar scores making it 6-0
#NJDevils throttle the Canucks 6-0.
Jacob Markstrom earned his first shutout as a Devil, stopping all 20.
Every single player contributed in a positive way.
The Devils are now 7-4-2. Now we can sleep.

thank you @elliewilliums for tagging me in this oc game!!
im gonna tag @chloefrazer, @latenna, @brujah, @lexcanium, @voerman, @abelas and anyone else who wants to do this!
favorite oc
it’s a toss up between varya or parisa 🥹 they are both so important to me and i love them so much! they also have the most content ive made about them.
newest oc
i think it’s agony; shes a tiefling college of satire bard and she’s literally a clown
oldest oc
orianna? i think? she was from the first campaign i got to play instead of dming. she probably would be one of my fav ocs if thinking about her and the game she was in didnt make me sad lmao
meanest oc
ripley? i think? shes not very outwardly mean, but shes very abrasive which could come across as mean.
WAIT it’s quinn from fallen hero. fail girl cunt swag
softest oc
definitely luci, my tiefling protection domain cleric and champion fighter. shes just a fantasy christian girl oc lmao
dumbest oc
probably vox, only because theyre too obsessed with being sexy. and also probably the brain damage.
smartest oc
fenlynn by a long shot. her intelligence was nearly maxed out from the start. shes also a wizard so 🧠🧠
oc you’d bang
maybe eve? her offputting charm and prophetic visions have captivated me.
or jonas i guess? theyre covered in tattoos and thats very self-indulgent of me.
oc you’d be friends with irl
my gut instinct is aimyr or fen.
aimyr because he’s very principled and accepting. hes also been through a lot, so i imagine hed give good advice; hed also probably let me cry which i think we all need a friend like that.
fen because she’s probably really fun to have convos with because she is so smart. i think shes also pretty agreeable (when shes not in a depressive episode) and can have a lot of fun. i think shes also very logical, so shed help me solve my problems when i overcomplicate things
theyre both ironically earth signs lmao

Right back at ya!
Who would be the other two: Teal’c, Ronon Dex or Teyla?
Who would you pick: Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Cameron Mitchell, Jonas Quinn or Ronon Dex?
Who is the best head of SG (SGC or SGA): George Hammond, Hank Landry, Elisabeth Weir, Sam Carter or Richard Woolsey?
Who is the best enemy: Goa’uld, Replicators, Ori or Wraith?
If you could pick three characters (no matter if dead or alive) to create a team, who would they be?
Where would you be rather stationed: SGC or Atlantis?
What’s your favourite ship (canon or not) from each show?
What rare/alien species did you like the best?
.Who is your favourite Alien (person/creature not from Earth).
And last but not least: Favourite male character of each show and favourite female character of each show?
Bonus question: Least favourite male and female character from each show?
Okay, lets see…
Who would be the other two: Teal’c, Ronon Dex or Teyla? -> Hmm… Teyla beats Ronon, but either ends up in a tie with Teal'c or manages to beat him by like… one second; She is really fast and while T has the tactical skills as well as the muscles, he is not as fast, and does not rely that much on his skills to dodge or keep his whole body protected
Who would you pick: Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Cameron Mitchell, Jonas Quinn or Ronon Dex? -> As a buddy? Sheppard (love his humor); as a leader? O'Neill (has great skills in that area and is rather loose in his interactions)
Who is the best head of SG (SGC or SGA): George Hammond, Hank Landry, Elisabeth Weir, Sam Carter or Richard Woolsey? -> Let's kill Landry, Woolsey and Weir before we even start that question; Neither of them had my liking, and the first two were basically just replacements because the others died/didnt want to anymore I would say Carter. She knows what its like to be in the field, so she has a better understanding of how and why her people react the way they do; AND(!) she goes with on missions and does not just sit in a comfy chair
Who is the best enemy: Goa’uld, Replicators, Ori or Wraith? -> Wraith for me. I like the whole concept of it, where they are (mostly/often) evil, but not out of their greed for power, but because they are hungry; And I love Todd 😂
If you could pick three characters (no matter if dead or alive) to create a team, who would they be? -> Sheppard as a leader (because i would like to interact with him more, and he is more same-level than jack is), Teyla as the negotiator and Dani as the smart boy
Where would you be rather stationed: SGC or Atlantis? -> Atlantis, for sure! Tho only with a ZPM or the intergalacti gatebridge in order, because while I dont need to see my familiy and friends every week, I do not want to spent 3 weeks (one way!) to get to Earth; And I would really like to meet more of the cultures they show there
What’s your favourite ship (canon or not) from each show? -> Jack/Sam in SG-1, and Sheppard/Teyla in SG-A; Never watched SG-U and dont intend to either 😂
What rare/alien species did you like the best? -> The Unas 😂 Damn, I love that episode where Daniel meets Chaka, and has to learn that just because he is more animalistic, that doesnt mean that he is uncultivated or dumb
Who is your favourite Alien (person/creature not from Earth). -> Ronon Dex :D I mean: "You've gotta see this guy in action. He is an incredible shot, none of my guys can beat him in a fight, and he's ex-military."
And last but not least: Favourite male character of each show and favourite female character of each show? -> SG-1: Sam and Daniel; SG-A: John and Teyla :D
Bonus question: Least favourite male and female character from each show? -> SG-1: Hathor (stupid snakehead) and Landry (never really liked him, he was too… blablabla); SG-A: Princess Harmony (the one that constantly lied to Sheppard and then portrait Rodney as her hero; spoiled little brat!) and Woolsey (I mean… he is IOA!) *I mean, even in my notes for a possible Teyla/Sheppard fanFic, I explicitly stated the following: Princess Harmony (S4) -> DOES NOT EXIST!
This is fun, thank you!! :D

Stargate Sg1 (angst) Prompt:
What is the time-limit between a second Zat'nik'tel shot being lethal?
Also:
Turns out, Zat blasts have a cumulative affect over time; two shots is enought to kill a full-grown man instantly, did SG1 really think there would be no deleterious effects to repeated exposure over the years?
One of the team gets 1-shotted by a zat one-to-many times, and falls into a coma; now, the rest of SG1 has to get their teammate home safe from behind enemy lines, aware that any zat blast could be their last.
(turns out, using torture devices as casual stun guns [especially on your own people!] is a bad idea, and there's a reason the Space Fascists who throw away the lives of their slaves and children alike like it's nothing use them as such)
Alternate, extra angsty prompt:
Sg1 get's captured by the enemy after being zatted-- and when he wakes up in the holding cell of a Goa'uld Mothership, Jonas Quinn is the only one that does wake up. Now, he's got to get his new team home safe, and prove his innocence to the allies that (eventually) come to SG1's aid.

Ficwriting Interview Meme
Tagged by the delightful @quinn-tessentially ty friend!
name: Lesa, frausorge on AO3.
fandoms: over the years - the x-files, due south, popslash, bandom, and these days mostly hockey. and a bunch of random things for exchanges etc.
two-shot: well, I did a sequel ficlet meme back in the day which means I have a good handful of things posted as two-part series on AO3. and there’ve been a few times when I added on an unplanned additional chapter/epilogue. but the majority of the time when I’m writing I think in terms of one self-contained story.
most popular multi-chapter fic: strictly speaking, eat ivy. which is kind of ironic to me for several reasons, but there it is.
actual worst part of writing: putting in enough connective tissue, so to speak. I tend to think in terms of key moments and lines, and writing enough of a scene around those highlights to make the story flow is always a struggle for me.
how you choose your titles: not very original - mostly quotes, song lyrics or poetry lines. I went through a single word title phase for a while but then I got bored of that.
do you outline: not very much. I usually have an arc in mind of how the story needs to go, but except in rare cases, I don’t write that out. at most I’ll put reminders of scenes I’ve thought of but haven’t written yet, in between scenes that are already drafted, like “phone call with mom here” or “fight about birthday presents”.
ideas you probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice: I always thought it would be fun to write a 2004 lockout-HC Davos Joe Thornton/T*bea P/Jonas Hiller threesome fic. but after Jumbo left the Sharks I lost all steam on it.
callouts @ me: HOW many times in one fic can characters be silent for a moment before answering? before it is TOO many times??
best writing traits: minimalism.
spicy tangential opinion: idk I mostly try to just keep my head down!
tagged if you want to be: @popliar @proteinscollide @natashastarkk @egelantier and anyone else who feels like it!

Hopeless
Sensory Prompt: 'Secret Glances' Requested By: Anonymous (mystery prompt request)
Pairing: Jonas Quinn x GN!Reader
Plot: Jonas is not very subtle when it comes to his "hidden" feelings for Y/n.
Warnings: None!
Notes: I am taking this opportunity to write for soft boy Jonas, since no one has requested for before, which is despicable honestly. I mean, have you seen him? He's adorable. *The song mentioned is 'The Parting Glass' by The Dublineers (I prefer the version by Freya Catherine)
Words: 1.1k
General Taglist: @criminaly-supernatural, @caswinchester2000, @imaginesfire, @rexit-mo Stargate Taglist: @hybrid-omegaverse, @gatefleet
-
Jonas wasn't very subtle, even if he thought he was. The way his eyes were glued to you every time you were in the room. The way his eyes lit up when you were talking to him. Jack said he was like a love-sick puppy. Sam thought it was adorable, the way he seemed head-over heels for you. Stealing looks at you at any moment.
Obviously you noticed, but you were even more shy than him in some ways, and of course would say nothing.
You stole your fair few of secret glances at him as well. Admiring his bright smile when something exciting was happening. The way he was always interested in what others were saying. Watching him when he was so drawn into a book or problem that he was unaware of his surroundings. You seemed to be the only one able to pull him out of his thoughts. With one mention of his name his eyes would shoot up to meet yours, and you had all of his attention.
As much as you wanted him to tell you how he felt, you did have to admit, you enjoyed his not so subtle pining. It was new. And unexpected. No one had ever looked at you like he did. Every time his eyes would shine and his dimples would show when he smiled at you, you felt like you were on fire.
You wished you had the courage yourself to say something, to do something about it yourself, but that was a realm of courage that did not seem to exist for you. At least not yet.

Jonas perked up as the sound of your laugh met his ears. Leaning back in his chair, he spotted you in the hall, talking to Janet.
He let out a soft sigh as he took the moment to study and admire your features. The way your eyes crinkled as you smiled, and the almost delicate curl of your lips. The way you tilted your head a bit to the side as you listened to someone speak.
Jonas stole every moment he could to look at you. These secret glances, where he didn't have to worry about you catching him studying your face.
Seeing you begin to look his way, he threw himself forward, back towards his desk with a loud clang. He closed his eyes tightly as he winced in embarrassment, there was no way you didn't see that.
Looking over towards Jonas's door, you spotted a flash of movement as he seemed to disappear from view, as a loud clang of his chair could be heard. You smiled to yourself before you continued down the hall with Janet. You felt your ears burning as he realized he had been staring at you again.
"He's not very subtle is he?" Janet asked with obvious amusement in her voice.
Your smile widened, "I think it's cute."
"Then why don't you tell him?"
"Are you kidding? He would melt into a puddle on the spot out of embarrassment and then he'd never look at me again."
She chuckled. "You might be right. Maybe he'll buck up and find some courage to ask you out one of these days."
You grinned at the thought. "We'll see."
Jonas slowly leaned back in his chair again. Seeing that the hall was now empty, he let out a deep sigh as he rubbed his face. He was hopeless.
- - - - - -
You were singing softly to yourself as you flipped through your book, searching for a passage of particular interest.
"Of all the comrades that e'er I had, they're sorry for my going away. And all the sweethearts that e'er I loved, they'd wish me one more day, to stay."
Jonas smiled softly as he listened to the soft melody. He was leaning against the doorway of your office, watching you. He had come in to ask about your research, but when he heard you singing softly, he didn't dare interrupt, and instead allowed himself a moment to watch you.
Finally spotting him out of the corner of your eye, you looked up, to see Jonas watching you. You felt your heart jolt, and you smiled at him. "Hello Jonas."
You saw the moment where Jonas realized you saw him, and that you had spoken to him, as his eyes widened a bit and he straightened up. "Oh, hi. Sorry, I was just- I didn't want to interrupt, your singing was lovely."
You chuckled softly "I wouldn't describe it as lovely, but thank you."
"It was." He defended as he stepped closer. "Really."
You smiled at him, feeling your face growing hot. "Thank you." You cleared your throat "Did you need something?"
"Oh! Yes, uh...I was just coming to see how your research was going."
"Not much better than before I'm afraid." You admitted as you closed your book. "Yours?"
"Same. I'm afraid we're both stuck."
You hummed under your breath "Perhaps Sam or Daniel have something."
As you stacked your books, you glanced back at Jonas, finding him already staring at you. You could feel butterflies in your stomach as you looked away again, unsure of what to do or say.
Jonas stepped closer as he pulled his journal close to his chest. "Y/n?" He asked softly.
Looking back at him, you smile "Yes?"
He opened his mouth, only to close it again quickly. Looking down and back up you saw him swallow before taking in a breath. "Would you like to have dinner with me?" He finally blurted out.
"Dinner?"
"Yes. Not in the cafeteria, I mean. Maybe we can get some food and come back here, to eat, together, alone."
You smiled at him "Yeah, sure. That sounds nice."
"It does?"
You let out a soft chuckle. "Yes, Jonas, it does."
"Oh, good, great." He grinned at you before he looked around, as though he was unsure of what to do now. "Uhm, perhaps we could meet up to get food later, around six?"
"Six." You nodded with a smile.
He nodded his head and smiled. "Six it is. Okay. I'm uh, I'm going to go ask Dr. Jackson about his progress, and I will see you later. At six."
"At six." You confirmed again with an amused smile as he began to walk out.
He gave you one last wave and smile before he disappeared, leaving you alone grinning to yourself.
As Jonas headed down the hall, he let out a long deep breath as his heart pounded heavily. As a grin spread across his face, he allowed himself a moment of elation and relief. He may be hopeless, but at least he could no longer claim to be a coward.
xx End xx
It's a shame no one writes for Jonas, and I'm sure barely anyone will read this. But I hope to write for him more in the future anyways. He is very underrated.

Cover: The Kardashians in ruins
Page 1: Fans jumped to conclusions when Taylor Swift who is known to drop hints about her personal life in her music videos posted a teaser shot for her new clip for Willow of herself in a lacy dress and floral headpiece looking very much like a blushing bride -- Taylor and boyfriend Joe Alwyn have been talking weddings and they initially discussed throwing a big bash in Joe’s native England but they’ve reconsidered since holing up in Taylor’s farm outside Nashville so now they’re just going to go ahead and get married in a small romantic ceremony and forgo the church wedding and elaborate reception since they are super private and prefer to do things out of the spotlight
Page 2: Contents, Heather Rae Young scoped out wedding dresses with Chrishell Stause by her side
Page 4: Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio are heating up the Boston set of their movie Don’t Look Up where their chemistry is off the charts even though both are seriously taken: Jennifer is wed to Cooke Maroney and Leo’s been dating Camila Marrone since 2017 but Jennifer and Leo have always had a flirty rapport whenever they bumped into each other at awards shows and other industry events -- Jennifer’s husband Cooke could be annoyed with all the flirting even if the actors are keeping things professional and as for Camila she finds his connection with Jennifer pretty intimidating
Page 5: There’s plenty of tension on the set of The Morning Show now that Julianna Margulies has joined Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston on the series -- Jen wasn’t in on the decision to add Julianna to the cast and is miffed she wasn’t consulted and doesn’t understand why Reese insisted bringing Julianna on board and she’s just plain hurt that the new arrival has been getting so chummy with her BFF and Julianna and Reese are whispering behind everybody’s backs and barking orders like they own the place and they’re not even inviting Jen to lunch

Places Carrie Mathison Has Lived: New York City Edition
this installment of my carrie’s apartments series is close to my heart because i also live in brooklyn, though not close to carrie. the show actually filmed a scene just a block from my apartment, but for obvious reasons i’m not going to specify which scene. i know, season six is overall meh with the exception of carrie’s blazers, but my lizard brain still goes, “that’s where i live!” so i give it more leeway than i probably should.
carrie lives in the bedford-stuyvesant neighborhood of brooklyn, which was once primarily home to black and latino families but unfortunately is in the process of gentrifying. some light googling tells me they filmed the interior apartment scenes on a soundstage in another brooklyn neighborhood called greenpoint, which begs the question: why didn’t they just make carrie live there? greenpoint has also been gentrified but is mostly home to eastern european immigrants, so the writers could have avoided the questionable racial implications of carrie living in bed-stuy, particularly when she’s working at a non-profit that promotes racial justice. and greenpoint is also more convenient to her office in williamsburg! i know the answer to this question is probably just “brownstones look pretty,” and there are lots of brownstones in bed-stuy but not in greenpoint, but i’ll still bitch about it.
anyway, we know from quinn’s escape to the bodega in 6.02 that carrie lives close to the intersection of throop avenue and halsey street, which means she lives off of the kingston-throop A and C trains and a sort-of far walk from the bedford-nostrand G. she probably takes the G to work in williamsburg. this is information that’s only important to me, but i love public transit.
the bike lane sign in the screenshot above reminds me how much i loved seeing carrie biking around berlin. even though nyc isn’t nearly as bike-friendly, i hope she does the same in brooklyn.
carrie appears to have free reign of the entire brownstone, which must have been two separate units at some point — both where she and franny live and the ~garden apartment~ on the basement level that has both a full bath and kitchen. she obviously can’t afford to rent out an entire brownstone in new york city, even in bed-stuy, so my headcanon is that otto bought it as an investment property and is letting carrie and franny stay in it at a heavily discounted rate.
brownstones are typically long and skinny, as we see here. there are really only two rooms on the first floor: the living room and the kitchen.
i love seeing all of franny’s drawings strung up on the living room wall and her chalkboard/easel in the corner. this fixes an issue i had with carrie’s berlin apartment, which was that there was a weird lack of kid stuff. i don’t think that means anything on its own — we see in 5.01 how devoted carrie was to her seemingly normal life as a mother — but it’s nice to see more little touches in her brooklyn apartment.
i assume the fireplace in the left-hand corner isn’t actually usable, but it does make the living room look homier. i’m surprised there isn’t more carpeting, since carrie loves a patterned rug. the living room looks a little cold without it. maybe she isn’t done decorating yet, though i think we’re supposed to believe they’ve been in nyc for a few months.
there’s a tv next to the fireplace in 6.05 that isn’t there in 6.01, which is very strange placement. the only furniture opposite the tv is a desk and chair, so there’s nowhere to sit comfortably while watching. i don’t think carrie spends a lot of time watching tv, but that’s still a confusing choice. i do like franny’s fuzzy chair with bunny ears, though. carrie probably ordered it on amazon but i like to imagine her schlepping it in and out of a cab.
now for the kitchen:
one nice thing the show did to convince us that this is an apartment carrie could maybe afford is that it’s not newly renovated: all the kitchen appliances are basic and/or old, and the countertops look like plastic laminate and are chipped along the edges. and there’s no room for the nice cutting boards or espresso machine she had in germany! i always find barstools charming even if they’re just a cheat to make an efficient use of counter space.
my favorite detail in the kitchen is the trio of framed drawings done by franny. again, i love all the “carrie’s a mom, remember?” touches.
the curtains are a gold color and match the curtains in the living room! carrie learned some design lessons in berlin.
even in the daytime the whole first floor feels really dark, which makes me miss the floor-to-ceiling windows in berlin. i brightened the screenshots a lot to see the details, but especially in the living room, the sunlight just doesn’t reach all the way across the house. the lack of natural light (and the fact that they filmed during the late fall) does a lot of quick work to set the dreary tone that persists for the entire season. i can’t help but compare it to the americans, which also filmed in brooklyn in the fall/winter, but at least the indoor scenes in that show were well-lit and generally warmer in both color and tone.
i associate the early seasons of homeland with warm yellows, probably because they filmed either in the desert or in charlotte in the summertime. the shift to gray winter skies and heavy coats is a little jarring, even with berlin in the middle as a transitional urban, cooler season.
that door behind carrie goes out to a set of stairs and their little backyard/patio:
it’s common, if a little depressing, to have bars on first-floor windows as shown in the second shot above, both to child-proof an apartment from the inside and to prevent break-ins. our first view of franny for the season is through those bars, but i’m not entirely sure what the symbolism is supposed to be. carrie already feels a separation from franny, maybe? this shot especially feels super foreboding.
carrie continues her trend of killer outdoor lounge furniture (remember the multiple chaises on her DC patio?) with the wooden chair with blue cushions right outside the back door. there are also more potted plants than i believe carrie would purchase/remember to water, especially in the winter, but maybe she figures if they’re outside they’ll get enough rain to survive.
i don’t have a lot to say about the patio itself other than i’m jealous that carrie has outdoor space.
inside by the stairs/front entryway is a framed berlin jazz poster which makes me inexplicably happy, and follows the same trend with the jazz posters she had in her DC apartment. it’s hard to tell what’s in the photos, so i’m choosing to believe they’re pictures of places she and franny loved in berlin, including some of the two of them taken by jonas. there is absolutely a photo of franny and carrie at the birthday party we saw in 5.01 where carrie’s wearing that balloon hat.
we don’t get to see a lot of the second floor, but i’m going to assume it’s just franny’s room, carrie’s room, carrie’s weird conspiracy closet, and a bathroom.
franny’s room is very colorful, with the rainbow sheets and rainbow polka dot curtains. it makes up for the dreariness of the first floor. behind carrie in that second shot is franny’s star lamp, which i love but have many questions about. it’s obviously an allusion to brody, of which there are many in season 6, probably because they’re in new york city and brody would have never served/been captured/turned/bonded with carrie if not for 9/11. assuming that carrie purchased this lamp for franny with brody’s memory in mind, does franny have anything else that’s star themed? if not, why this lamp? did carrie explain to franny that stars make her think of franny’s father, or is it just a secret nod for carrie alone? how often does carrie talk to franny about brody, if at all?
now we move to carrie’s conspiracy closet:
i’ve been in enough brownstones to know that sometimes there are strange inexplicable tiny rooms, which is what we have here. i’m sure this would be advertised as an office space on streeteasy but it really looks like a glorified closet with a confusing number of doors leading off of it. i count three total including the one saul came in — what are all these doors? i think the one on saul’s right goes to franny’s room but i don’t have a great spatial brain and i’m not confident about that assessment.
this conspiracy board reveal was kinda anticlimactic since very little happens with it, but i still felt like i needed to include it as a separate room since carrie clearly spends a lot of time here.
i wish we got to see carrie’s bedroom because i love to scrutinize the art she has, but sadly we’re limited to franny’s room. i’m going to assume there’s a full bath up here somewhere, and a half bath downstairs that we don’t see.
finally, we have the basement apartment that carrie allegedly rents out on airbnb. in real life it likely would be marketed as an entire unit separate from the two floors above, but since otto owns the entire brownstone / is in love with carrie he’s just letting her do whatever she wants with it.
the full kitchen is what convinces me it was supposed to be an independent unit — no one has a stove and sink and lots of cabinets in their basement. like we saw in carrie’s kitchen, none of the appliances are fancy and the countertops are nothing special, which makes the room look kinda drab but does help sell the idea that carrie could actually live here. there’s also some water damage in the corner by the fridge. i’m not sure why they decided to be realistic in season 6 — can we all recall carrie’s unnecessary two-bedroom townhouse in DC? — and it’s not particularly fun to watch, but i’m not mad about it.
the living room area of this basement actually looks cozier than carrie’s living room, with all the pillows and the exposed brick wall. i have a weakness for exposed brick walls, as we know from carrie’s DC apartment, and here it goes pretty far to make the space look homey. the couch looks like it matches the chair on her patio (with the wood frame + blue cushions), so does that mean the patio chair is meant for normal indoor use? why is it outside??
as we know from her berlin apartment, carrie really loves a two-curtain combo with a sheer under layer. these are dark green, similar to the navy ones she loved in berlin but not the same. i do like the thought of carrie taking her navy curtains with her from germany and relegating them to the basement to avoid the constant reminder of her past life, but i also have no desire to think about what it would mean that quinn ends up living in the basement with her jonas curtains. so those must be new!
in summary: musings about carrie’s role in gentrification, the color palette of the show, berlin jazz poster + photos, franny’s art on the walls, star lamp, a basement living room that’s cozier than carrie’s actual living room!
#homeland#carrie mathison#me acknowledging qu*nn's existence? only because i needed the screenshots#me bringing up jonas for no reason? of course#i cropped/brightened these photos while watching gilmore girls which sure was a tonal shift#cma*#i miss carrie even though i have every single episode at my fingertips

This action-adventure with a side of romantic suspense is marketed as Christian, but I’ll just note up front that it’s not overtly so. The religious side of thing is limited to saying grace before meals and mentions of church group activities, which frankly is a good thing. I really have a pet hate for evangelising in books that are supposed to be about something else entirely.
US Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn are partnered up to escort a prisoner transfer flight from Seattle to Denver. A plane crash leaves them stranded in the wilderness, with a dangerous prisoner on the run they have to track down before anyone gets hurt. Madison has a major backstory - her husband was murdered five years ago and his killer has never been caught - which is obviously going to play a significant role in this series, as the book ends on something of a cliffhanger.
There’s a lot to like about this story. Madison is extremely capable, brave and smart, and willing to step into tricky situations to give her team the best chance at achieving their objective. She calls Jonas on his tendency to try to protect her, too. She’s a strong female protagonist by definition.
Which is why it bothered me so much that it was always Madison who got hurt. She and Jonas both were going into dangerous situations but it was Madison who was shot, hit, fell into a river etc. Never Jonas. And that was conscious authorial choice, as it was for Jonas to be the one who actually got to get the final decisive action with respect to catching the fugitive, in effect stealing the moment Madison had worked so hard and suffered for. And then he also got to turn up in the nick of time to save her at the cliffhanger, too.
This really started to bother me after a while. It was contradictory; on the one hand here is Madison being capable and brave, and on the other, she’s being ‘punished’ for it by constantly getting injured and having to be rescued by Jonas on more than one occasion. I think the author might have some internalised issues to unpack there.
There are hints that a romance might develop between Jonas and Madison, mainly when we are in Jonas’ POV and he’s hinting that he might have romantic feelings for her, but it hasn’t developed into anything really by the end of this book. The plotline seemed pretty well resolved (though we never did find out why the plane crashed) with the overarching mystery of who killed Madison’s husband obviously going to continue through the series. Overall, a good read, but I’m marking it down to 4 stars because of the issues I had with the contradictions in Madison’s portrayal.
The Escape is available now.

“Designated Driver” | Directed by Michael Offer, Cinematography by David Klein
Sara: If I had a dollar for every Homeland episode that opens with Carrie speed-walking while looking over her shoulder every four seconds… I would have about ten dollars.
Gail: The imagery of Carrie looking over her shoulder is very reminiscent of the pilot episode. The closer we get to the end of the show, the more it feels like we have come full circle.
Ashley: Hi everybody, I’m joining Director’s Chair for the very first time because I’m feeling left out. I have no idea what I’m talking about. Anyway, Carrie’s paranoid, and rightly so, but it’s not paranoia if the guy you’re in love with just stuck a needle in your neck.
Sara: I had to take a screenshot of this because this is Claire’s actual handwriting, and long-time readers of this website will know that it seriously bugs me when they try to pass off someone else’s handwriting as Carrie’s. Anyway, this is the real deal, people.
Gail: Another scene that shows a character versus a gang of three. Here the Pakistan Ambassador is up against Hayes, Zabel and Wellington... or is he? Wellington has inched closer to the inner circle of trust, but hasn’t quite made it behind the desk yet. If Hayes represents the center, only Zabel is on his side, while the both the American flag and Wellington are not.
Ashley: This shot, from above, has the same feeling of watching a bomb about to drop. The desk is the target. Will anybody in this room survive the fallout of what’s coming? (Please let it be Wellington.) (What even is coming?)
Sara: I love this shot because of the body language of the four men. Hayes and Zabel are both leaning forward in aggressive stances. Linus has his legs crossed, hand to his chin, thinking of new ways he’d like to be swallowed whole. The ambassador leans back, sort of resigned to this entire clusterfuck.
Ashley: The look on Balach’s face is so… everything. The furrowed brow, clenched jaw, and the intensity of his eyes — he’s barely holding it together, and his expression is pure murder.
Sara: I love this actor who plays Balach (Seear Kohi). He has been so great all season. I finally figured out this week that he looks surprisingly similar to Donald Glover. It’s been bugging me for weeks.
Gail: Balach is not faring as well as advisor to his new boss, (ugh) Jalal, as Wellington is to Hayes. I love the angle they chose for this scene. We see Balach from above and it gives the impression that he is looking down at Jalal, which based on his point of view, he most certainly is.
Gail: Carrie is back in the same place where President Warner thanked her and recognized her for all that she has done. Feels poignant that she shares this moment with Worley back at Bagram. He put President Warner in that helicopter and indirectly, so did she.
Sara: IJLTP.
Sara: I feel like Jenna’s entire storyline really paid off this episode. I loved this detail of her hand shaking when Mike mentions the ops team in the Pakistani jail.
Ashley: Jenna’s been a wildcard all season and this episode humanized her in a very real way. I don’t want more Homeland, but I would be interested in Jenna’s story moving forward. So she’s probably gonna die.
Gail: Jenna’s got a long way to go in her training at the Carrie Mathison Spy School if a little treason gets her this nervous.
Sara: This is such a cool shot. There is an identical one of Quinn in “Iron in the Fire,” which was also directed by Michael Offer.
Sara: This shot reminds me of two things:
that moment in the cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas when everyone wakes up and their houses are completely bare.
that moment in “Super Powers” when Carrie paces back and forth, weighing her next move and hesitating, after Jonas leaves.
Everything this season is reminding me of something else, not in a bad way!
Gail: It reminds me of a surveillance shot with the camera mounted up high, giving a full view of the room. We don’t know it at the time, but maybe this is a subtle nod to Carrie being under surveillance while looking for Yevgeny, who finds her with Arman, her designated driver, a short time later.
Ashley: This reminds me of “A False Glimmer,” actually. Carrie returning home to her apartment, mostly expecting Jonas to be gone, but calling his name anyway — ultimately opening a closet to find his things still there; and she’s reassured of his presence. She didn’t expect to find Yevgeny here, but he’s left nothing. The disappointment, to me, reflects her relief at finding that Jonas hadn’t left.
Gail: Ugh, Jonas.
Sara: Yay, Jonas.
Sara: I love the reveal of the other Russian officials seated around the ambassador, watching his phone call with Saul. It’s such an ominous setup.
Gail: Such a great reveal! Very interesting choice to keep the people in the background, out of focus, in this shot. Feels symbolic--the audience can’t see what’s coming, and neither can Saul.
Sara: I stan this friendship.
Gail: My theory that everything goes to hell every time someone smiles still holds.
Ashley: It’s amazing to me that Carrie still has people who are so loyal to her. Don’t they know better?
Gail: Well, Arman is still alive, so, no.
Sara: This Carrie/Yevgeny scene is so great. I love the way it shifts as Carrie processes what Yevgeny is asking for her--as she says later, making an offer she has no choice but to accept. You can see her cycle through the stages of grief: denial that the asset exists, anger that Yevgeny is asking her to do this, bargaining with him (she’ll do anything else), depression when she realizes she has to do it, and finally acceptance.
Gail: Interesting that they had her cycle through the stages of grief. It must mean something is gone that she’ll never get back. The choreography of Carrie walking away from Yevgeny and turning her back on him as she processes what he’s just said is telling too. Not only is he not on her side, he just became her Russian handler.
Ashley: It’s a dreamy shot too, everything blurred behind her, but we’ve really found ourselves in Carrie’s worst nightmare.
Gail: Sorry, Jalal. Yevgeny has already trademarked that lean.
Sara: There was a lot of imagery involving children this episode, which I find very interesting. Here Jalal is literally training young boys to shoot and kill. It gives a new sense of hopelessness to the entire situation. As Balach says, they’re inviting more endless war, and they’re lining up their next generation of soldiers.
Gail: Saul’s body language has continued to morph into a submissive and defeated posture. The stress this man is under makes me worried for his health. A person can only take so much before they break and it seems like Saul is almost there.
Sara: Me watching this damn show.
Ashley: I second.
Sara: I found this moment where Carrie observes the two young girls playing to be especially poignant and a very Homelandian detail. It immediately calls to mind Franny, or, as Gail said on the podcast, the various little girls we see in the opening credits each week, versions of Carrie who have grown up watching war and conflict play out on her television screen.
Sara: Carrie using her earring to remove the SIM card in her phone is such a Carrie thing to do and I have to stan on that one.
Gail: I love the detail because it’s also a callback to Allison in season five when she “tears down her comms” while going into full flight.
Sara: The expression in Carrie’s face here, as she turns herself in, also strikes me as one of grief. To be patted down by soldiers, to have to utter the words “I’m Carrie Mathison. I’m wanted by the FBI”... for a patriot like Carrie, we know this is her absolute worst nightmare.
Gail: I agree. I think Carrie is devastated that it’s all come to this but she also looks resolute. Her gaze is determined and steady, and her movements are calculated. Her line to Saul keeps echoing in my ears: “I did what had to be done.”
Sara: I found a lot of parallels between Carrie’s and Balach’s situations in this episode. Maybe Balach finding his two sons was meant to mirror Carrie seeing those two girls earlier. They act ultimately for those children.
Ashley: The horror at finding his children on-site — I find it hard to believe that Balach didn’t know what this meant at the very second he saw it. He, too, goes through the stages of grief at record speed.
Gail: Ashley’s right, Balach goes through the same stages of grief as Carrie. It’s clearer what Balach is losing in this moment and never getting back: his life. Is that true of Carrie as well?
Gail: Carrie’s cool demeanor versus Jenna’s anxiousness sets up such a powerful scene between them. The coloring of the room is cool, too, done in trademark Homeland blue and gray.
Sara: This is quite a role reversal. Now Jenna towers over Carrie; still, Carrie ends up maintaining the upper hand. I loved this scene and how it paid off the season-long quasi-mentorship between them. Carrie has been teaching her lessons all season, just teaching them the hard way.
Sara: Carrie being on the other side of the interrogation table is not something I ever thought I’d see on this show.
Gail: Carrie’s posture is confident. She is sitting upright, head tilted slightly forward. Her hands are under the desk, revealing nothing. Carrie has probably been in a million interrogations and knows how to play the game.
Gail: So many emotions play across Saul’s face here. We’ve seen Carrie and Balach cycle through the five stages of grief this episode, both of them having their cycles shown within one scene. Saul on the other hand has cycled through his stages over the course of the episode, ending with acceptance in this conversation with Wellington.
Sara: It’s ironic that in the episode where Saul finally steps up to acknowledge the ways in which he’s used Carrie over the years but can’t turn on her now, she makes the crucial decision to potentially betray him. There is a great contrast between Linus’ motives--about optics and politics--and Saul’s--which ultimately boil down to loyalty.
Ashley: I never thought I’d see Sara talking about how Saul’s motives boil down to loyalty, but 2020 is a helluva year.
Sara: IJLTP.
Gail: It looks like a chess board. If Mike thinks he put the Queen in check, he’s got another thing coming.
Sara: Carrie looks stun-ning here. (Requisite acknowledgement of yet another scene where Carrie is filmed from outside a car window.)
Gail: I love this storytelling device the show uses to give us a window into Carrie’s current emotional state. What’s great about this shot specifically for me is the familiar jazz music from Homeland’s opening credits that softly plays in the background as Carrie is being brought home almost a full year later. It’s the first time we’ve heard jazz music in a scene with Carrie all season long. We can see reflections in the window, but over Carrie, the glass is crystal clear. Earlier in the episode Carrie says she can’t see a way out of the hole she’s dug for herself. But just as the glass here is crystal clear, so is Carrie. She knows what she must do.
Sara: Gail, a “window into Carrie’s current emotional state”... literally!
Sara: Love the “GOODBYE PAKISTAN” sign as we’re leaving this setting and returning to America the homeland for the final two episodes.
Ashley: The “GOODBYE PAKISTAN” is interesting because it is in English. Obviously this is for the viewers, but it comes off like a warning.
Gail: It is most definitely a warning. Look at what awaits them on the other side.
Sara: This scene was so stunningly shot. It reminded me a lot of Brody’s tape from “Marine One” and Carrie’s from “Why Is This Night Different?”
Gail: The details were all crafted so well too. From the prop department and set designers, to the moving score from Sean Callery, to the beautiful writing, to the performance from Seear Kohi. Balach accepted his fate in the earlier scene with Jalal, and now he is resolved to do what needs to be done.
Gail: I mentioned this on the podcast, but good Lord does this woman give great side eye. This is the exact same look I give my kids when they say they don’t have homework. I stan.
Sara: Gail, you’re so right. Vanessa Kroll gives excellent side eye.
Gail: Parker, the character shown here, also cycles through the five stages of grief.
Sara: It’s not just Carrie who’s been trapped. The special ops team being literally trapped inside the bus, desperately yelling to be let out, was especially heartbreaking. This season, the show has portrayed multiple characters--major and minor--who are trapped in an endless cycle of war, prisoners of their own ideas and the system in which they operate.
Ashley: There is also just the fact that people are physically entrapped consistently — but they can still see what’s outside. Being able to see things and not stop them or escape them… it’s kind of a motif in this show, amped up to 1000 this season.
Gail: And now, acceptance of a fate he can’t escape.
Sara: This entire sequence was expertly edited, the shouts and commotion drowned out by Sean Callery’s excellent score. Weirdly there is a sense of quiet to it all.
I appreciate the contrast between these two reactions. Parker looks at the bomb barreling toward him and seems to have a sense of acceptance about his fate. Jenna, meanwhile, mostly out of harm’s way, ducks behind a car and her expression is one of fear.
Sara: This final moment where Balach lets out an excruciating scream as flashes of his crying sons play across the scene is heartbreaking. He dies so that they can live. I thought it was--ironically-quite beautiful.
Ashley: Agree that it was beautiful, but it’s terrible insofar as his children are going to grow up under Jalal’s rule. They will never see the peace that their father wanted; they will never even know that’s what he wanted. Balach didn’t have a choice, but his legacy is now embedded in terrorism — not peace.
Gail: Balach had a choice, he chose his family. From their perspective, he’s a hero.
Gail: The symbols on the side of the bus are symbols on the Pakistani flag. The star symbolizes light and knowledge, the crescent moon symbolizes progress. Quite a contrast to the people being held prisoner within.
Sara: The split second before it happens -- the palms pressed against the bus windows is a breathtaking image.
Gail: We don’t need a car window to locate Carrie emotionally now. She’s looking straight ahead, and like Balach in the car, begins her journey to the end.
Sara: The parallel to Carrie in the airplane is an unexpected one, but it fits. She has the same look of resolve in her eyes as Balach. She knows what she must do. She’s blowing up her life in her own way, setting a match to it all. Is she a martyr, or is she a traitor? This scene fits between a cut to white and a cut to black, and that’s where Carrie has always been: in the grey, searching.
Ashley: God help me.
