Jeffrey Dean Morgan (2015) in ‘Desierto’. “I just really liked the role. For one, it was a bad guy, and I don’t play those often, or I hadn’t played those in awhile.”

Review of Desierto (2015)
Tumblr media
Best thing: The attacks are wonderfully choreographed with the baddie and his dog working in tandem to hunt down our protagonists. Very exciting.
Worst thing: The story is fairly simplistic and I'm not sure I understand the message, beyond simply that we are all human beings deserving compassion regardless of borders. (Which we all knew already, right?) Perhaps if we had more clues as to what drove the villain to do this?
Tumblr media
In the end this is a pretty well told simple story. It's also very well directed, with great performances and all the action very clearly framed and shot. However, this isn't really a film with a great deal of depth.
Tumblr media
Perhaps the really creepy thing about the villain is supposed to be that he's 'just an ordinary guy' who happens not to think of those illegally crossing the border as people. There's no maniacal laughter or cold stare. When not hunting down mild-mannered human beings, he seems like a simple man minding his own business with his dog as a trusty companion.
Tumblr media
So I guess that might be the point? That he's in no way demonised, because all you need in order to make him a villain is to show him shooting people in cold blood.
Tumblr media
But I think you'd have to be pretty sick to ever side with someone who shoots ordinary people for fun. There's not really much of a message here. No keen insights. Just a pretty cool film about people struggling to escape a psychopath. (I say 'psychopath' because of the clear lack of empathy his character must possess in order to justify his actions to himself.)
Tumblr media
At some point the protagonists need to handle the dog. This film actually reminds me of the surprise hit "Don't Breathe" with its 'man and a dog' villain set-up. Having recently watched P2, 'man and his dog' seems to be a surprisingly common threat in horror films. In Desierto, taking out the dog felt particularly satisfying to me.
Tumblr media
This was solid entertainment and the acting and camerawork only served to elevate it for me. Simple but effective for what it is.

La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon) - dir. Patricia Riggen
The story tells of a young Mexican boy undertaking the migrant journey in search of his mother, working as a maid in the US, and features Mexican stars Eugenio Derbez and Kate del Castillo.
Sin Nombre - dir. Cary Fukunaga
The first Spanish language film to be marketed and distributed by Focus Features. Sin Nombre tells of the migrant journeys of Willy (Edgar Flores), who attempts to escape from his violent gang lifestyle, and Sayra (Paulina Gaitan) a Honduran migrant who is crossing to the US with her returning recently deported father.
La Jaula de Oro (The Golden Dream) - dir. Diego Quemada Díez
Recounts the fraught and traumatic journey of adolescents from Guatemala and a Tzotzil-speaking Mexican from Chiapas as they travel through Mexico to the US. The film has won multiple national and international awards, turning an international spotlight on the issue from the point of view of the young migrant-refugees.
Desierto - dir. Jonás Cuarón
Starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Desierto demonstrates how a social issue film combined with a genre approach and star power can reach wide audiences and raise awareness of the precarious situation of migrants. Although the film was shot before Trump’s infamous anti-Mexican campaign speeches, the filmmakers capitalised on them and turned them against him in an alternative trailer that features Trump’s notorious anti-Mexican comments.
The film highlights the dangers of the rise of the deeply racist alt-right through the character of Sam (Morgan), a sniper who hunts migrants with impunity and relish. In Sam, the film holds a distorted mirror up to the hero cowboy of classical Hollywood, revealing his black heart. Desierto’s lone antagonist may be dressed as a Clint Eastwood lookalike, but he is revealed to be a psychopath, presented as a coward when deprived of his gun and his hunting dog.
It is Bernal’s character, Moises, the Mexican migrant seeking to re-enter the United States after deportation, who is the hero. He, not the US self-styled cowboy, embodies values associated with fictional heroes: courage, solidarity, triumph over adversity, love for family, strength and resilience. Desierto’s achievements are impressive: the film succeeds in being a socially important mainstream action thriller without sensationalising or providing pleasure in violence.

Movies: Gravity (2013)
Tumblr media
Verdict: Pound for pound, the best sci-fi film I’ve seen in a very long time, if not, maybe, ever; truly wonderful, ‘hard’, science fiction, not to mention a spectacular action flick.
Very minor points off for cringingly stupid dialog and horribly cliched characters. Why do women sci-fi protagonists always have to have dead family members in the closet? I’m thinking Jodie Foster in Contact, Amy Adams in Arrival and Bullock here. Where’s the unencumbered, strong female lead who can just get on with being an action hero, without all these pathetically obvious attempts by “writers” to artificially manipulate us into caring about them? Ellen Ripley, where are you?!?! Fortunately, the movie’s non-stop action forces these annoyances into the background, for the most part.
Nice touch having Ed Harris as the mission control guy again too.
Rating: Good
Sci-fi Elements: Really just physics in zero-gravity. But, as you’ll see, that can be a hell of a lot of fun
Approximate Studio Theatrical Take: 162M upon release - ROI approx. 81%
Rotten Tomatoes: critics - 96%, audience - 80%

Jeffrey Dean Morgan in ‘Desierto’ (2015). “It seems to be the latest trend for my career, to play a bad guy. Although, I think we made this movie over three years ago. It’s coming out now for very obvious reasons, I guess, but to coincide with what’s happening with The Walking Dead, it’s two horrible characters at once, which is kind of fun.”
