Life is strange right now. Most of us aren’t actually sick, but we must self-isolate and social distance ourselves. Some people are really upset by this. And I will admit to being annoyed at times. And yet, I can’t help but to think of Jonah.

Jonah knew that if he proclaimed a disaster and everyone repented they would be spared (which is good) but then he ran the risk of looking like a liar, a false prophet. And right now, some people think that if we self-isolate and no one else gets sick, that means it was never that dangerous. But Jonah was flattening the curve too! The city of Nineveh was not too far gone yet. They could take the proper precautions and gain God’s mercy. Right now, we too can take the proper precautions and gain God’s mercy. I don’t mean we should fast, wear sackcloth, and sit in ashes. I mean we need to listen to the science and medical communities as they offer their warnings, and follow their instructions.

I don’t believe that God sends us instructions the way God did in the time of Jonah. I believe that we have to use the reasoning abilities that God gave us, and listen to those people whom God has inspired to be doctors (and nurses, and other healers) and scientists.

So, it’s time to be like the citizens of Nineveh. We might spend a lot of time at home, and isolated right now. And it may seem like it is all for nothing. But I promise you, it is not. Every time we stay home, or limit our interaction, every time we social distance ourselves, or sanitize things, it is helping to save lives. Every time we limit the spread of COVID-19 we help to “flatten the curve” of infections, and that helps to keep our hospitals under control.

The bible doesn’t say if the people of Nineveh thought Jonah was a false prophet when the wrath of God did not come. Perhaps they knew that their actions mattered, just like ours do now. Do you think they didn’t also have plans? Celebrations cancelled? Of course they did. But it didn’t matter. It was life or death, just like it is now.

Time To Focus is a linocut that tells the story of Jonah, God’s reluctant prophet. He was told to go to the people of Nineveh and warn them to get there shit together-to avoid God’s wrath. He avoided the tough job and instead took a cruise ship. Well God found out and caused a storm ⛈ big time and just before the 🛳 sank Jonah came clean to the crew and told them to throw him overboard which they finally did and instantly the storm ended and Jonah was swallowed by a huge fish. He spent three days in this dark place of bad breath until he was spit up on the shore of, you guessed it, Nineveh! I love this verse because Jonah when he thought there was no hope inside the great fish he called to the lord and he answered his prayer! Amazing! I think we need to remember this story when we feel at our lowest, when we feel God isn’t there or we have distanced ourselves from him. We need to remember that in those testing times God will still hear our cries and the best thing of all he’ll answer!!!! . It just takes obedience...

Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city, proclaiming, "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown."   Jonah 3:4 

And in the very next verse (3:5)…”The Ninevites believed God.”

Jonah received direction from the Lord to go and preach against the city of Nineveh because of its wickedness…and initially the Bible says that “Jonah ran away”.  How often do we run away from something that God has asked us to do?  Whether it’s fear, anxiety, being uncomfortable, or just not willing, we may ignore God’s call on our life to perform an action, speak a word or simply listen.  But as Jonah would soon find out, when we run, all we do is bring more problems upon ourselves, because we are disobeying our Maker, and we’re trying to accomplish tasks on our own.

In verses four and five of Jonah 3, something happens…”Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord”, and proclaimed to the Ninevites as God had commanded.  Scripture then tells us that those in the city of Nineveh, which would eventually become the capital of the violent and destructive Assyrian empire, believed God. Just like that, Jonah follows a commandment from God and the hearts of many were changed.  The bible tells us that there were 120,000 people who couldn’t tell their right hand from their left, meaning infants and young children…so when you extrapolate the number, commentators say there were probably as many as 600,000 people in the city!  

One calling from God, one statement given, one person following God…and several hundred thousand people’s lives were changed! If we would just follow God when He calls!

ITS DONE ITS DONE! 🐋 I can’t believe this massive monster is finally finished. A very nice way to start off what I believe is going to be a very good year. . . Me and my sister stared off this project, with maybe a little too much gusto, about the first week of November. You don’t truly recognize the size of something until it is towering in front of you. Regardless of the height and the width, we pressed on. We used a projector to project my approved drawing onto the wall, which helped immensely with placement and design. From there we used just about every color under the sun to make a vibrant and fun under the sea world. There were many long days and long nights of funky song playlists and goofy dance parties. . . I can’t thank my sister enough for being my wonderful partner on this. I definitely could not have done this alone. She’s an amazing talented artist whom I love working alongside. A big thank you to my other sister @lindsay.jones , my parents, and my lovely husband for the company and help with this project. . .
