WITCH ON THE HOLY NIGHT

now this is peak. the most gorgeous tm work by far i have to say its simply an incredible read all around. even tsukire did not look or work or sound as good as mahoyo did even tho it came out almost ten(?) years after

on the story front i loved it too with a special shoutout to soujuuro being one of my favorite characters in TM (i say this often not my fault type moon keeps releasing bangers)

however mahoyo has two issues for me:

the story is clearly incomplete: i dont mean its just nonsense or whatever but when nasu said its the first of a trilogy you can just feel that in the story with alot of things being left in the air. this wouldnt be an issue really if mahoyo 2 wasnt basically dead....

i didnt vibe with the slice of life scenes as much as i usually do in nasu works: this isnt a flaw in the story more so i just didnt like em idk how else to word that

mahoyo is a great read however and i highly highly recommend you read it or else

all of the characters are simply chefs kiss. while the visual novel is incredibly dated and the art is even worse you have to understand this is nasu and takeuchis first ever visual novel made on a barely existing budget.

boy do they make up for that.

the vn is split into two with a near side and far side.

while the near side is really good with arcueid and ciels route (ignore how ciel was actually really fucked over even in her own route its laughable and my girl deserved better) the far side is so much more better and really is where the soul of tsukihime and shiki the main character lies

i cba to review it properly besides saying PLEASE READ IT RN or ill cry and you dont wanna see that do you....

what is there to be said about such a masterpiece? what else could be written about fsn that hasnt been written before? i am but an ant in the shadow of the giant that is FSN only seeking some crumbs to feed and live off of. idk what that means but it sounds cool.

FSN is simply tms best work all around. while i prefer tsuki over it and find the tsuki side of TM more interesting FSN overall is much stronger on most fronts but especially its main characters

im not a fan of remaking classics on the level of tsuki. with all its flaws i still find the original to be good enough to not need a remake...

UNTIL I READ THE REMAKE

this is how you do it folks. the story was elevated on nearly every level and if it was the complete story id say its the best ever in existence ever forever fr. its just that good.

there are three things i really want to point out:

while maybe goin overboard i really liked the buffs all the characters received and in general the whole worldbuilding is so much better now with idea bloods and principles and vampire hierarchies and arcueid inflation scenes (heh) its just epic

ciel got a so much better route that actually feels like a ciel route and not just arcueid route 2 electric bugaloo (and getting fucking cucked)

noel is peak

this is peak type moon and when red garden comes out it will be even BETTER especially with satsuki route because satsuki deserves it

there are some other short stories i havent mentioned like garden of avalon, notes, MAGNITUNING (look it up you wont regret it) its all great and worth the time of reading

eventually i wanna play CCC and read some other stuff like maybe prillya DDD, fgo jp like lb7 traum and whatnot

ok so. why not. basically i got there and there were just 2 ppl in the room, Him & some other guy, both in the second row. i put my stuff down where i usually do in the first row. literally as soon as i started doing that he got up and moved to the first row one chair over from me

I do agree. nationalism isn't any more heroic than any other belief systems and, like all other belief systems, in its most extreme forms is incredibly dangerous with plenty of real world implications. However, sometimes fics set I na historical time would also want to portray historical attitudes; do you have any suggestions or advice on how to avoid glorifying it in that case?

i am not a historian so forgive me i’m not an expert on this... so don’t take this as “advice” and especially not as striving for historical accuracy, rather as me sharing what i do personally with it as a concept.

i’ll start with something i think is rather relevant: how do we reconcile the fact that national personifications within the universe have existed among humans for so long with the fact that nations and national identity, which are inherently social constructs, have changed so much throughout history? from obvious stuff like... borders change, governments change, toponyms change a hell of a lot throughout history.   some people argue that it’s not about any of those things and only about identity (which is uh... not imo because identity is far from a fixed, immutable thing, and as a concept it has its nasty implications as well especially when paired with ethnicity. but we’ll start with the assumption that we already agree that ethnical implications are BAD because, holy shit) but i’d say it is not even consistent with the canon material.  think of a character like prussia that has “incarnated” so many things. the teutonic knights, prussia, the DDR. what did these entities have in common in terms of “national identity”? in my opinion... not much. yet (jokes about prussia is dead aside) he’s always there. i doubt many citizen of the DDR would have cited the teutonic order as a fundamental part of eastern german national identity. and i doubt that protestantism (arguably a part of prussian identity) would have gotten the seal of approval from the teutonic knights. 

so one thing i do is to have the characters themselves question what it means to be a national personification. if they have lived and changed name, and government, and customs, and culture, or have kept existing in spite of colonization over hundreds or even thousands of years, it’s only plausible that they would wonder what the hell they even are and ask themselves whether those nationalist ideas are after all just bollocks.

which brings me to a small disclaimer here: i’m not saying that nationalism has always, historically, been a force for bad. i can recognize nationalist ideas in the (ongoing) struggle for decolonization, for example. (i shouldn’t really have to say it but decolonization is a good thing)  that’s really not what i mean when i say “nationalism” tho...

what i’m referring to is like. mostly european “identitarian” nationalism. shared group identity as a general idea is probably as old as the onset of the first people who organized in groups/tribal identity. but nationalism and the concept of one national identity = one ethnically/culturally homogenous people = one nation/state to rule over them, as we know it today only really took shape in the modern era, especially in the 19th century.  so, without getting out of my lane as a very european white guy in fear of messing up, i’ll use my country (italy) as an example.  if you’re writing, say, about the italian risorgimento and how the idea of a shared (though very constructed) italian cultural identity brought people together against empires that literally colonized us (austria, spain), that’s not necessarily a bad thing, per se. (there’s problems to address, sure, but to keep things simpler we won’t get into those.)    to continue the example, speaking about the history of my country. if you’re gonna talk about how that very same nationalist ideas led to a rise in f*scism and even before that, how italy exploited those same ideas to become a colonizer itself, at this point nationalism was unequivocally a force for bad; it was not a struggle for liberation but a tool for domination; and if you glorify this kind of nationalism, YTA in my book.  but it’s important to recognize that those two things are connected and rooted in the same ideology and if you choose to include it as a theme i’d say that making the character themselves address it, with the internal contradiction that is their existence before italy even “became” a nation, and how there’s TWO italy brothers but only one italan government, and so on, is the most convenient way to do so. 

if your question was about how to approach cultural attitudes about nationalism in certain time periods where it was overwhelmingly popular, just remember that minorities and dissenters have always existed and that a character’s belief =/= their boss’ beliefs.  even in the 19th and 20th century in italy, there were revolutionaries, there were republicans (in the literal sense, not the american politics sense), there were anarchists, hell there were pope stans who hated the italian risorgimento because it was seen as fundamentally anti-catholic and the king  didn’t have the papal approval and therefore no right to reign, if you want to take it to the other, very opposite extreme of dissent. the characters are, at the end of the day, sentient people with their own opinions that don’t necessarily reflect the government, nor the “statistic majority” of people. but how you write about them can reflect a whole lot about your opinions in the way you address those themes within the work.

so yeah, TLDR the way i deal with it is: 1. question the concept of national identity 2. question the concept of national states 3. question the concept of nationalism as a whole and what you’re trying to say when you’re talking about nationalism in the context of your work-- this includes looking at how nationalism has been used, as an ideology, in the history of a given country.  4. remember the fact that low budget anime (semi) immortals would’ve had centuries to ask themselves the same questions 5. if you feel like this is too much of a head scratcher, remember that when dealing with "problematic” subjects, sometimes we have to ask uncomfortable questions. perfection is not the answer; however, they require a nuanced and sensible approach.

I’m well overdue for this, but it’s finally time for me to talk about the Wonder Woman movie! I saw it about a week and a half ago after 3 previous failed attempts to see it, so it was an ordeal. But it was well worth it because I had a blast. 

Themyscira was absolutely gorgeous. I was blown away by how incredible it looked. Honestly that alone was enough to make my eyes water just a bit. And I actually had a tear or two roll out of my eye at the scene where Diana stormed the Front. It wasn’t the first time we’d seen her fight, but it was her very first battle outside of Themyscira--her first stand and action as “Wonder Woman”. It was amazing and it made me emotional. 

There’s a lot to be said about the interactions between Steve Trevor and Diana. I’ve always felt that Steve Trevor is a very... risky character. At this point in time it’s such a sexist, trope-ish relationship setup. Just the whole “he’s the first man this woman has ever met so she’s automatically going to fall in love with him” scenario. And it’s so easy to make his character into this blowhard jerk. Which is exactly what Joss Whedon did in his scrapped 2006 script for a WW movie

I feel like this one paragraph has it all--calling a woman delusional, insinuating that she causes her own problems, the hardcore objectification, and blaming her for his feelings. Like holy shit it’s almost impressive how bad this was. But seeing this helps to contrast what we almost got with what we did get. And what we did get was pretty darn good. 

There were things like innuendos between Steve and Diana, but they weren’t really at Diana’s expense. The movie did a good job of making Steve likable, and the interactions between him and Diana enjoyable. Yes, Steve did have to semi-babysit Diana while in London, and he had to teach her so much about the world outside of Themyscira. But again, the movie handled these very easily shitty stock situations quite well. Like, in London, I felt that the butt of the joke of Diana’s inability to understand how women were expected to act was on the society, not on Diana. When a room full of powerful, influential men got flabbergasted and incensed because a woman walked in, we were laughing at them, not at her. 

Out at the war, Diana was naive. She didn’t understand things, and Steve did. However, Diana was still the hero. She still stormed the front. She did what everyone believed to be impossible. She inspired everyone around her, including Steve. And Steve? For all his measured, worldly knowledge and wisdom, still made mistakes. Like yeah, of course Steve was going to stop Diana when she tried to kill a general during a dinner party right before the war was about to be negotiated to a close. Of course he stopped her from acting recklessly without understanding what the consequences of her actions would be. And what happened? An entire village of people was needlessly slaughtered for it. The takeaway from that whole scene wasn’t, “Jeez Diana stop being so stupid and just listen to what the man tells you, okay?” It was a complicated situation where no matter what happened it was going to be bad. So even though we still had the clash between Steve’s mature understanding of the world and Diana’s naive one, it was still framed in a way that kept them as equals, rather than shoving Diana down to build up Steve. 

It might just be because I’m biased, but this was possibly the only time that I didn’t feel that a villain saying to the hero “hey you should join me we should totally work together to kill all humans or whatever” was completely stupid. I liked that they went with the “Diana is a demigod” origin for her, since it worked for this (human people going ��all humans should die” is ~edgy~ but literal gods debating it is another matter). And it worked well with Diana’s established character history in the film. She was raised in an isolated utopian society were she, for the most part, was taught that men were good. They were wise and gentle, and it was only through the treachery of Ares that these good men did evil. Diana was virtuous, noble, and courageous, and she believed that mankind was too. Ares barely had to do a thing because mankind committed their atrocities all on their own. So when it finally became clear to her how wrong she had been, she was understandably devastated. 

And Ares wanted to do something about it. He didn’t seek to destroy mankind because he was evil. He sought to destroy mankind because they were evil. So, in that moment, I felt his offer to Diana. His offer to Diana didn’t try to appeal to greed or a desire for power. It appealed to her sense of justice. To simply continue doing what she’s been doing--destroying evil so that good can prosper. Starting over so that the world could actually be a utopia, free from the selfish, callous, and hateful cruelty of mankind. But of course, what made Diana the hero was the fact that she could still see the good in mankind, where Ares couldn’t. That inability to accept the existence of a world of grey was what made Ares the villain. So I really liked that Ares tried to get Diana to join him. It was an offer that was noble in intent but absolutely evil all the same, which is what a lot of the bad in the world is like. But Diana rose above that and overall I thought the whole journey was a great way to develop her character. 

Finally, there was one issue I took with the movie tho. Ares in the flashback. They didn’t need have David Thewlis play Ares in the brief flashback too--after he was defeated and cast down by Zeus. Ares has always been able to change his form so there’s no reason as to why they needed to have him be a pale British man in his 50s with a stupid 1910s-style English mustache. Why not also have Zeus be played by Mr. Bean or John Cleese while they’re at it? 

Aside from that 3 second noticeable error in judgement, I enjoyed the movie a lot and thought they did a good job on pretty much every front. With any luck I’ll have a chance to watch it a second time this summer!
