Pain emerges as dominant symptom in long Covid, UCL study reveals - Published Aug 28, 2024

Pain may be the most prevalent and severe symptom reported by individuals with long Covid, according to a new study led by UCL (University College London) researchers.

The study, published in JRSM Open, analysed data from over 1,000 people in England and Wales who logged their symptoms on an app between November 2020 and March 2022.

Pain, including headache, joint pain and stomach pain, was the most common symptom, reported by 26.5% of participants.

The other most common symptoms were neuropsychological issues such as anxiety and depression (18.4%), fatigue (14.3%), and dyspnoea (shortness of breath) (7.4%). The analysis found that the intensity of symptoms, particularly pain, increased by 3.3% on average each month since initial registration.

The study also examined the impact of demographic factors on the severity of symptoms, revealing significant disparities among different groups. Older individuals were found to experience much higher symptom intensity, with those aged 68-77 reporting 32.8% more severe symptoms, and those aged 78-87 experiencing an 86% increase in symptom intensity compared to the 18-27 age group.

Gender differences were also pronounced, with women reporting 9.2% more intense symptoms, including pain, than men. Ethnicity further influenced symptom severity, as non-white individuals with long Covid reported 23.5% more intense symptoms, including pain, compared to white individuals.

The study also explored the relationship between education levels and symptom severity. Individuals with higher education qualifications (NVQ level 3, 4, and 5 – equivalent to A-levels or higher education) experienced significantly less severe symptoms, including pain, with reductions of 27.7%, 62.8%, and 44.7% for NVQ levels 3, 4 and 5 respectively, compared to those with lower education levels (NVQ level 1-2 – equivalent to GCSEs).

Socioeconomic status, as measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), also influenced symptom intensity. Participants from less deprived areas reported less intense symptoms than those from the most deprived areas. However, the number of symptoms did not significantly vary with socioeconomic status, suggesting that while deprivation may exacerbate symptom intensity, it does not necessarily lead to a broader range of symptoms.

Our study highlights pain as a predominant self-reported symptom in long Covid, but it also shows how demographic factors appear to play a significant role in symptom severity.

With ongoing occurrences of Covid-19 (e.g., LB.1, or D-FLiRT variants), the potential for more long Covid cases remains a pressing concern. Our findings can help shape targeted interventions and support strategies for those most at risk."

In the paper, the researchers called for sustained support for long Covid clinics and the development of treatment strategies that prioritize pain management, alongside other prevalent symptoms like neuropsychological issues and fatigue.

Given the significant impact of demographic factors on symptom severity, the study underscored the need for healthcare policies that addressed these disparities, ensuring equitable care for all individuals affected by long Covid, the researchers said.

Study limitations included a lack of information on other health conditions participants may have had and a lack of information about health history. The researchers cautioned that the study may have excluded individuals with very severe Covid and those facing technological or socioeconomic barriers in accessing a smartphone app.

The study was led by the UCL Institute of Health Informatics and the Department of Primary Care and Population Health at UCL in collaboration with the software developer, Living With Ltd.

Characters: Bultar and Sha.

A/N: This will be interesting to do. I hope you enjoy it. I didn’t know how to do Sha’s personality, so I hope this is ok. I subverted the usual dynamic for something more befitting the prompt. I hope that is alright. This is longest one yet and I’m hungry. I hope you enjoy.

Sha was different from her normal combative crèche mates. Bultar, Agen and Lissarkh were fairly combative natures. Where as she would stand by and watch the idiot who decided to antagonize them. Whether it was a joint Outer Rim mission with their Masters during their Padawan years. Or their escapades in the lower levels of Coruscant during their early Knighthood.

‘Agen got us kicked out of that bar when it was just getting good…’ she mused, as she walked down the streets of Nar Shadaa. She gazed up to the towering buildings. ‘That on Rodian should’ve kept his mouth shut...’

“What do you think, Sha? Should we pick something up?” A question broke her thought as she turned attention to her friend...or was it cousin? Second cousin, maybe? Uncle Plo had a habit of adopting, but then again he sometimes it was confusing with Bultar being Micah’s original Padawan. He and Plo were like brothers.

“Hm?” She hummed cocking her head to the side. “What is we’re getting?”

“Seriously? You are definitely Master Plo’s niece.” Bultar chuckled. “Always being observant of your surroundings. Is it a Koon thing or just Kel Dor in general?”

“That is up for you to decide, Bultar.” Sha replied, shrugging slightly.

Bultar rolled her eyes as she looked around at the different stall at the market. Some sold jewelry of various shapes, colours and materials. Others sold food of all sorts like bantha, wamp rat or rancor; then there were the shady stalls with spice or weapons. Nar Shadaa wasn’t the smuggler planet for nothing.

“Come on, let’s get something for Agen and Lissarkh.” She said, as she turned towards a meat vendor.

“I’ll leave you to the meat,” said Sha, as she observed the trinkets next to the stall. “I wouldn’t be able to go meat very well.”

Sha hooked her talon against a curved vibroblade dagger. The hilt was made of brass with a large circle at the end for hooking it to your belt perhaps.a red shining gem was the top of the hilt near the blade, but the interesting parts was the engraved words on the blade that said, “Kill with Honor. Die with Honor.” This suited Agen well.

“How about this? For Agen?” She asked the black haired Knight.

“Hmm..?” Bultar hums, as she turned the blade in her hand. “Sure, you know Agen is interested in an alternative weapon asides from his Lightsaber.”

“I ag—“

“HELP!” A voice screamed down the street.

The two Knights glanced quickly before placing the blade on Bultar’s belt and Sha tossing the credits to the vendor as he shouted at them. They bumped and pushed their way throught the crowd of people of varying species while apologizing at the same time. They stopped at the centre of the market with more shoppers walking about.

“Where is the problem?” Bultar asked, as she whipped her head around searching for victim and assailant.

“You weren’t good at patience, were you?” Sha snarked, as she closed her eyes and reached out with the Force.

“Please! I don’t have anything!” A voice, male, begged through the Force. He was on the ground,he was trapped, boxed him. “Don’t hurt me! Please!”

“I don’t care!” A slimly voice sneered, as they approach the scared man. The assailant seemed lanky through the Force, oily and slimy by the signature. “Give me your credits!”

There was light behind the man leading to a glowing fish sign. ‘There!’ She thought looking to the right ahead of her.

She sprinted ahead of her friend to the alleyway. She didn’t bother apologizing to those she bumped into as she made a sharp turned to her right at the corner of a building. Coming to a screeching halt at mouth of alley to gaze upon on an Ugnaught on the ground cowering and a tall, green Falleen standing iver him. He held a blaster in his hand.

“Is there a problem here?” She asked, hand hovering over her Lightsaber hilt.

“None of your...concern, Kel Dor.” The Falleen hissed an glared at her.

“My apologies for intrude on your mugging, sir,” she politely replied, as she waled into the alley, “but I can not allow that. That would be an injustice and my people do not stand injustice.”

“Get back!” The mugger shouted, as he turned his blaster on her. “Or I’ll shoot. You are far from Dorin and no hospital can help you.”

Sha halted in her march. She glared at him behind her goggles as she positioned her foot back behind, placing one arm forward palm out andthe other clutched into a fist at her side.

“You shouldn’t have said that.” She growled.

The muggar nearly pulled the trigger before the Kel Dor grabbed his wrist a dragged him forward. Next thing he knew was sent flying as woman pivoted to he side throwing him by pushing with other arm. He landed on the ground with a hard thud. He tried to scramble and knock her off her feet, but she jumped swung her foot up as she flipped down out on his head. Knocking him unconscious.

“Sha!” Bular called, as she came running into the alley. She glanced down at the unconscious Falleen. “What happened?”

“Justice is what happened,” the Kel Dor replied casually as she adjusted her cloak. “Shall we be off?”

“Uh..?” Is Bultar could say as she glanced between her and the assailant on the ground.

“Oh thank you!” The Ugnuaght said, as he clasped her, shaking eagerly. “Thank you! Thaknk you!”

Sha smiled behind her mask. “It was nothing. Just aiding those who need it.”

She then proceeded to grab the mugger and carry him out of the alley.

“Coming? I need help with carrying him.” She said, shifting the weight of the Falleen.

“Right!” Butlar said hooking the other arm around her shoulder. “I never knew you could do that.”

“You think Uncle was the only one in our family who learned martial arts?”

“Maybe...but you rarely do it.”

“Nether does he. Like you said, we’re a lot alike he and I.”

Sha Koon wasn’t combative like her crèche mates, but when came to it, she won’t hesitate.
