John Waterhouse, Circe Offering the Cup to Odysseus, 1884, Oldham Gallery, Oldham, UK.

When I think of depictions of witches, I think of a medium that predates popular media like television. I think of witches depicted in art. The painting above, painted by one of my favorite artists, John Waterhouse, depicts Circe(from The Odyssey) offering a chalice to Odysseus that she has enchanted. What Waterhouse has painted so well is the power she possesses innately in herself, so while Circe is not a queen, she has the power of one through her ability to do magic. The flowers around her being purple serve to advance that point.

In the mirror behind Circe, we can see Odysseus warily approaching. This perspective shows how Circe is attempting to bring Odysseus under her spell.

In 1884, this painting would have been a different depiction of witches than most depicted by the media. At that point, society had shifted to a more stereotypical depiction stemming from the Salem Witch Trials. However, Waterhouse depicting Circe as more of an Ancient Greek queen serves to convey the long history of witchcraft in the media.

John William Waterhouse

John William Waterhouse RA (6 April 1849 – 10 February 1917) was an English painter known for working first in the Academic style and for then embracing the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style and subject matter. His artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend.

Born in Rome to English parents who were both painters, Waterhouse later moved to London, where he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Art. He soon began exhibiting at their annual summer exhibitions, focusing on the creation of large canvas works depicting scenes from the daily life and mythology of ancient Greece.

The Soul of the Rose, sometimes known as My Sweet Rose, was completed by John William Waterhouse in 1908 and took inspiration from the literature of Alfred Lord Tennyson. The Pre-Raphaelite movement was devoted to the beautiful female form, not just Waterhouse himself.

I like the painting because of the colours and style of it.

Miranda, from William Shakespeare's The Tempest, arrived in 1916 from John William Waterhouse, right at the very end of his illustrious career.

John William Waterhouse was an English painter part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - a group of mid 19th century artists, critics, and poets who focused on depicting traditional subjects such as religion using elegant compositions and maximum realism. This painting features Miranda, one of the principal characters of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, who was banished to an island along with her father. Miranda has been captured looking out to sea and with her red hair spilling around her face reflecting the chaos of the scene in front.This painting, created in

1916

is an example of this, being a representation of The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Significantly, it became one of Waterhouse's most recognized works and the most popular illustration of the play

I selected it because I would like to be able to make an  environment as detailed as the one in the painting. 

One immediately recognises this painting as capturing the famous tale of Pandora opening her box. Artist Waterhouse adds little else to this scene other than some trees in the background which help to create the particular atmosphere in which this young lady carefully opens this beautifully crafted box. Behind her is a small pond which trickles down to her level, suggesting a tranquil setting without any other distractions. The artist wanted to ensure that the viewer's eye was also not distracted from the main subject of the painting.
