10.28 [ ghosts ]
Halloween is just 'round the corner, so this final Friday of fic recs means it's time for the list to expire, and to join the sheeted dead: it seems appropriate, then, to give over week 4 to ghosts. Sending out wishes to one and all for a splendid All Hallows' Eve, snug in the knowledge that the ghostly presence of 1895 continues to reappear in so many variations across the future, and, most compellingly of all, due to the fabulousness of fic writers and the gifts they bestow. 👻
previous weeks 10.21: most spine-chilling adversaries 10.14: occult transformations 10.7: tricks to treats ......................................................................................... ~in order of word length~ The Haunting of 221B Baker Street by earlgreytea68 (2012), rated M, 10388 words. We know from the start that: Sherlock hasn't survived the Reichenbach Fall; is very much a (spectral) presence; and is surreptitiously resident at 221B. Unaware of the latter two facts, John has decamped from Baker Street, but when Mrs. Hudson has trouble keeping tenants because they report the flat is haunted, he comes back to investigate. Experiencing a moment of emphatic ghostly dramatics convinces him that "if anyone was going to figure out how to be a ghost just to be a pain in everybody’s arse, it would be you" -- and he promptly moves back in. 221B is something like a deserted island in which two shipwrecked flatmates -- one alive and one not -- negotiate the perplexing terrain engendered by that great divide. The bittersweet premise starts out weighted more toward the bitter, although their journey through various forms of emotion (reminding me quite a bit of the film Inside Out) eventually delivers them with a never-to-be-forgotten rightness to the other end of the spectrum. A stunningly-executed love story that takes you on a deep dive into John's and Sherlock's personalities as revealed through their interpersonal dynamics -- which is why we read Johnlock fic, yeah? -- this is a fic that is supernaturally good, in all senses of the good word good.

A Thousand Kisses Deep by Susan (2017), rated E, 12689 words. This fic is such an exquisitely cut gem that it is thrilling (I guarantee that sentence will make perfect sense once you read the fic). A soul-satisfyingly second chances reversal of time narrative, in which a Sherlock who is old in body and spirit is informed by a ghostly visitor one sleepless night that a wish by John is being granted -- that is, if a Sherlock returned to 2010 can set things right. The incredible amount of readerly fun that results from following Sherlock's high-spirited romp as he makes his way through his gob-smacked deductions (about his reinstated younger body, about the perfection of his only consultant in the world London life, and in aid of his race to outwit the fates), brings about an equally incredible amount of heart-melting readerly rapture at the romantic entanglement that ensues. The different bits of call-and-response literary flourishes evoked in the text lend an already deeply-layered story an extra-dimensionality that goes beyond the temporal paradoxes. The epigraph to the story is from Leonard Cohen, and is a perfect distillation of the story that unfolds: And fragrant is the thought of you / The file on you complete / Except what we forgot to do / A thousand kisses deep.

He's Coming To Us Dead by Vulgarweed (2014), rated E, 13397 words. Part of the Bone Fiddle universe (but can be read alone), set in 1970s Appalachia, a place where enigmatic trouble-magnet Sherlock Holmes has drifted to, and to which Vietnam war vet John Watson has returned home. The two have semi-secretly taken up with each other in ways undeniably mutually satisfying, although the strain that possible apparitions place on their connection turns out to be scarier than the 'haints' themselves. This is a classic ghost story, steeped in local and Doylean lore (tragic love for the first, Baskervillean unease for the second). A fic full of questions answered and unanswered, in which Sherlock observes, "when we've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable -- is still fucking impossible." Like everything in the BF universe, this is a totally absorbing ride through the ways in which Sherlock and John reveal themselves to each other and to us, indelibly inscribed in smart, funny, captivating prose that gives us an addictively realized picture of them.
De profundis by darcylindbergh (2017), rated M, 32036 words. This is a charmer of a tale, sprung from the premise that since the age of 12 Sherlock has been able to see ghosts, and which uses that fact to ingeniously repurpose the elements of A Study in Pink in all kinds of clever ways. The ins-and-outs of what seems to be his singular ability to attract the attention of ghosts upends Sherlock's life, accompanied as he often is by the dearly-departed-although-not-yet-gone, and the fic's depiction of his inventive interactions with them -- exasperated, yet tolerant and kind and gentle -- has a winning sui generis tone that is sweetly absurdist. The chief plot point hinges on Sherlock's uncertainty when he meets John Watson as to whether or not he's alive or dead, a question that is stubbornly resistant to resolution over the course of the next day as he and John become increasingly enamored with each other as they team up to tackle the serial suicides, leaving the reader with an enticing puzzle to try and solve before Sherlock does.
The Cost of a Wish by slashscribe (2015), rated E, 102493 words. Since John Watson was a boy, he's had to contend with the terror that grips him due to the "formless spirits and ghosts that it seems only he can see," which press against him in threatening ways as a darkly massed cloud, chilling him to the bone, whenever he dares to venture outdoors. The desperation he feels one day suddenly lifts as he flees down a familiar street and ends up at the door of a building he's never seen there before. He tells the woman who opens the door that he has no idea why he's there, but the deep rumbling voice from the man at the top of the stairs gives him one word in reply: "Inevitable." Sherlock is the proprietor of a wish-granting shop, and the fascinating series of events that take place reveal the many mysteries of Sherlock, John, and the ways in which their lives have been entwined. The Sherlock series’ characters turn up in especially memorable ways, along with an enchanting cast from the Japanese manga the fic it is fused with -- including what is the most ridiculously cute animal in all of Sherlock ficdom, a Pipe Fox spirit creature, whose mysterious nature brings John and Sherlock closer in many endearing ways.

Do you have any fic recs of Sherlock being soft for John and John only.
Hey Nonny!
Ahhhhhhhh your request had me thinking that yes I do, and I did tag a few fics with “soft Sherlock”, but I’ve never started a list, so here ya go!
SOFT SHERLOCK
See also: Sherlock Soft With Children
Soft. Happy. Content. by inevitably_johnlocked (G, 223 w., 1 Ch. || Sleepy Cuddles, Bed Sharing, Slice of Life, Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Spooning, Morning After, Sherlock POV) – Sherlock reflects on his state of mind. Part 6 of I-J's Tumblr Ficlet Collection

So fluffy and gross your teeth will fall out. Part 4 of I-J's Tumblr Ficlet Collection
Peacock by ClassyGirlsWearPearls (T, 1,189 w., 1 Ch. || Romance, Cranky Sherlock, Soft John, Hand Holding, Soft Sherlock) – A study in Sherlock and John.
Mizzle by MrsNoggin (K, 1,233 w., 1 Ch || Friendship, Fluff, Platonic Johnlock, Humour, Slice of Life) – John can't decide if it's raining or not. Sherlock doesn't understand.
And, Usually, He's the One Who GIVES Me a Headache by Cumberbatch Critter (T, 1,315 w., 1 Ch. || Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, POV John, Cranky John, Headaches, Head Massage) – A migraine is never fun.
Together is What we Have, Together Protects Us by Phantom of the Black Pearl (K+, 1,566 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TRF, Friendship / Platonic or Slash, Hurt/Comfort, Insecure Sherlock, Worried Sherlock, Slice of Life) – After a case one evening in the flat Sherlock voices a concern that causes the pair to consider why they've chosen to stick together after all that's happened
Here to Stay by MockJayPhoenix12 (K, 1,574 w., 1 Ch. || Post Reunion, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Headache, Bed Sharing, Care Taker Sherlock, Hand Holding, Fluff) – On Sherlock's first day home, John wakes with a migraine.
Evermore by SosoHolmesWatson (G, 2,068 w., 1 Ch. || Post-S4, 5-Year-Old Rosie, Love Confessions, Song Fic, Parentlock, Oblivious John, Pining Sherlock, First Kiss, Love Confessions, Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Disney Songs, Beauty and the Beast) – For the past years, John and Sherlock have lived at Baker Street again, raising Rosie together--as friends and nothing more. Ever since the little girl has watched her first Disney movie, she is obsessed with princesses. When John comes home one day, he finds his friend and his daughter in the middle of a reenactment of her current favourite. Part 1 of Made of Music
Let the Sun Fade Out by nothingislittle (E, 2,711 w., 1 Ch. || Fluff & Smut, Praise Kink, PWP, Obsessed Sherlock, Bottomlock, Heart-Tearing Love) – "He could warm the sun itself, Sherlock thinks, could heat their flat with just his presence, could brighten the room with one dazzling smile or just the sparkling in his eyes. John is everything, he’s beautiful and he shines, he’s everything."
Unquantifiable by 221b_hound (M, 2,799 w. 1 Ch. || Est. Rel., Sherlock/Sally Friendship, Grumpy John, Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Pet Names, Texting, Sweet Sherlock, Princess Bride References) – John remains a terrible and foul-tempered patient, but he does try to make up for it with pet names and text message silliness. In the meantime, Sally Donovan visits Baker Street for a hint about the Milverton case, and has to deal with a Sherlock Holmes who can't find words big enough to thank her for saving John's life at the warehouse. For afters, there's a viewing of The Princess Bride. Part 33 of the Unkissed series
Pillow Talk by 221b_hound (E, 2,925 w., 1 Ch. || Post-HLV, Est. Rel., Preening Sherlock, Limpet Sherlock, Frottage, Hand Jobs, Sex on Furniture, Scent Kink, Masturbation, Fluff, Soft Sherlock, Sherlock’s Bum) – John gets home late from work and Sherlock is nowhere to be seen. John walks through the flat, distracted by memories of all the excellent sex they've been having, and finally finds Sherlock asleep in the upstairs room - apparently having fallen asleep mid-wank while inhaling the scent of John's pillow. Well, you should always finish what you start, John thinks... Part 3 of Lock and Key
The General Idea by agirlsname (T, 3,022 w., 1 Ch. || Retirement, Promise of Forever / Proposal, POV John, First Kiss, Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Soft Sherlock, Idiots in Love, Crying / Emotional Sherlock, Love Confessions) – After twenty years of friendship, John is used to Sherlock acting weirdly. But the news Sherlock finally brings himself to deliver change the carefully built dynamics between them, and John realises it's time to act.
Affirmation by jamlockk (E, 3,096 w., 1 Ch. || First Time, Dev. Rel., PWP, Love Declarations, Emotional/Overwhelmed Sherlock, Comforting/Caring John, Gross Fluff) – "Sunlight dappled John's skin, casting a glow across his spreadeagled form as he dozed among the rumpled sheets. Sherlock knew the expression on his face was hopelessly soft but for once did not care about showing his true feelings so openly. He simply stood there, in the doorway, gazing at the impossibly beautiful man currently snuffling softly in his slumber." Part 8 of All the ways we love
Untouched by KittieHill (E, 3,239 w., 1 Ch. || Kissing, Frottage, Virgin Sherlock, Body Worship, Sherlock’s Scars Mentioned, Masturbation, PWP, Rimming, Multiple Orgasms) – Sherlock leaked a lot. John had never needed lubricant. John loved watching it, had once spent an entire afternoon edging Sherlock so he could watch as the thick precome drip, drip, dripped onto Sherlock's belly.
Morning Sunlight by slashscribe (E, 3,565 w., 1 Ch. || PWP, Morning Sex, Fluff, PWP, Established Rel., Soft Idiots) – A thin band of soft morning light peeks between the curtains and stretches across John’s torso, laying dormant across his forearm, dipping into the space between his arm and his chest, illuminating his right nipple but just brushing the edge of his left, disappearing into his armpit, and reappearing again right over Sherlock’s eyes where his head rests, nestled against John’s shoulder. Sherlock is not annoyed by the light’s intrusion on his sleep, not when it rests so soft and tantalizing on John’s skin, a work of unintentionally erotic art. A PWP with so much emotion.
Living Musical by VeeTheRee (G, 4,149 w. 1 Ch. || Est. Rel., Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Domestic Fluff, Hobbies, Summer, Song Fic, POV Sherlock, Painting, Play Fighting, Soft Sherlock, Dancing, Love Declarations, Hair Petting, Promise of Forever) – A one-shot of John and Sherlock being domestic during summer. There is paint, fluff, and music from Imagine Dragons, namely from the album 'Speak To Me', specific song in this one-shot is 'Living Musical'. Part 1 of the Happy Fluffy Johnlock Time series
Date Night by inevitably_johnlocked (G, 4,451 w., 1 Ch. || Anxious / Worried Sherlock, Caring John, Schmoopy Fluff, Fidget Cube, Baking / Cooking, Date Night, Established Relationship, POV Sherlock Holmes, Understanding John, Grumpy Sherlock, John’s Bum, Kisses, Hugs, Domestic Fluff, Touching, Hair Petting, Light Humour) – It's John and Sherlock's first Date Night as an official couple and Sherlock needs it to be PERFECT. Mrs Hudson helps. Part 7 of I-J's Tumblr Ficlet Collection
If He Knows by shamelessmash (M, 4,513 w., 1 Ch. || TSo3 Fic, Pining Sherlock, Bed Sharing, Angst, First Person Sherlock POV, Texting, Internal Monologue, Blanket Forts) – I imagine mornings: John handing me a cup of tea, hair sticking out at odd angles. How he would bend down to kiss me, smiling fondly as he pulls away. The way his skin crinkles at the corner of his eyes, the way his skin looks in the morning light. The soft sigh as he sits in his chair with the morning paper, the way his toes curl in the carpet, the way he rolls his shoulders before sinking deeper into his seat. I watch him, how he is when he is content, as it should be. As he deserves. Happy. With me.
all things warm and tender by darcylindbergh (E, 5,177 w., 1 Ch. || PWP, Romantic Fluff, Rimming/Anal/BJ’s, Body Worship) – Grinning and giggling, John slides back down under the sheet and pulls it over his head. He finds Sherlock waiting for him, eyes bright and hair wild, the firelight bleeding through the thin fabric, colouring everything in soft peach and topaz, and in that moment he is so suddenly, unexpectedly, ethereally beautiful that John forgets how to breathe.
Pillow Talk by scullyseviltwin (M, 5,183 w., 1 Ch. || Post-S3, Angsty Fluff, Pillow Talk, Bed Sharing, Worried John, First Time Morning After, Soft Sherlock, Sexuality Discussion, Love Confessions, Kisses and Cuddles) – John has been looking at Sherlock for ages, it feels like.
a very soft epilogue (my love) by darcylindbergh (E, 5,395 w., 3 Ch. || Retirement, Domestic Fluff, Dancing, Dogs, Grumpy Old Men) – Across the pillows, Sherlock shifts and hums, the creases of his face deepening and then smoothing before settling. John watches him wake up, his chest swelling with affection and fondness, and thinks he’ll never get tired of Sherlock in the mornings, sleepy and soft. It’s been some forty-odd years, and John hasn’t gotten tired of it yet. Part 5 of things fairy tales are made of
Naked by sussexbound (E, 6,166 w., 1 Ch. || Frottage, Fluff, Intimacy, First Time, Love Declarations, Trust) – John takes a deep breath, and then lets out a long-suffering sigh. “Sherlock, how would you feel if you were sitting out here doing one of your bloody experiments, and I just waltzed out of the loo and started fixing myself breakfast completely starkers? Hmm…? ”Sherlock’s lips inch up at the corners into a pleased hint of a smile he can’t seem to suppress. Part 2 of Intimacy
Christmas by WhimsicalEthnographies (E, 7,673 w., 1 Ch. || Worried Sherlock, PWP, Drunkeness, Christmas, Est. Relationship, Idiots So In Love) – John feels a lump rise in his throat, and it hits him, again, that this beautiful, infuriating creature is his. Completely, one-hundred percent his.
How To Give Your Boyfriend Who Doesn't Know He's Your Boyfriend the Best Valentine's Day Ever by unicornpoe (T, 9,832 w., 1 Ch. || Valentine’s Day, Fluff and Crack, Soft Sherlock, POV Sherlock) – Sherlock is pretty sure that John Watson is his boyfriend. He's also pretty sure that John doesn't know it. But with a little help from a magazine, some friends, three crepes, five dates, one awesome CD, and a stalker van, John is bound to realize just in time for Valentine's Day.
Someone I Love by hudders-and-hiddles (M, 10,002 w., 2 Ch. || Canon Compliant, HLV-Filler Fic, Pre-Slash, Jealous John, PIning Sherlock, Angst & Fluff, UST/URT, Dog Tags) – John gets married and Sherlock finds comfort in wearing John's identity tags around his wrist.
To be loved by Strange_johnlock (E, 12,436 w., 8 Ch. || Post S3, Established Relationship, First Person POV Sherlock, Pet Names, Soft Sherlock, Mild ADHD, Protective John, Captain Watson, Body Appreciation, Bottomlock, Rough Sex, Travelling for Holidays, Introspection, Sherlock Loves John So Much It Hurts) – John is so deeply integrated into the work, both as my conductor of light, and as a great shot with a vicious right hook who tackles men -and women- no matter their size all in my defense. He protects me with all he can without question, and this loyalty is surely more than I deserve. Or: Sherlock is counting his blessings.
holding steady by darcylindbergh (E, 12,724 w., 4 Ch. || Post S4, Love Confessions, First Kiss, Growing Old, Gone Fishing, Mood without Plot, Soft Sherlock, Caring Sherlock, POV John Third Person, Anxious Sherlock, First Kiss / Time, Touching, Feeling Old, Sherlock Worship, Crying Sherlock, Cuddles, Comforting, Introspection, Retirement, Hand Holding, Forehead Kisses, Caring John, Bed Sharing, Emotional Love Making) – Sitting on a thick wool blanket at the end of a rickety dock side-by-side, legs dangling over the edge, a styrofoam container of wet, dark dirt between them, they’re fishing. John knows what this is about. This is about finally figuring it out.
On The Fence by BeautifulFiction (T, 13,770 w., 1 Ch. || Fencing, Case Fic, First Kiss, Insecure John, Pining John, Hug, Greg Finds Out) – The murder of the King's College fencing champion leads to revelations about Sherlock's past. Will it be the point that tips them from friends to lovers, or will they remain on the fence?
The Invocation of Saint Margaret by Ewebie (E, 15,831 w., 1 Ch. || POV John, Crossing Timelines, Light Angst, Fluff, Series 3 John / Series 1 Sherlock, The Matchbox, Mushy Romance, First Time, Bisexual John, Pining John, Bottomlock, Love Confessions, Sensuality, Emotional Love Making, Snippets of Time) – When Sherlock Holmes opens the matchbox from The Sign of Three and John finds himself years in the past, back to that first dinner at Angelo's with a much younger Sherlock Holmes. Is he dreaming?
Division by MrsNoggin (E, 19,542 w., 11 Ch. || Coffee Shop AU || First Kiss/Time, Fluff, Barista Sherlock, Clingy Sherlock, POV John, John’s Limp, Bed Sharing, Fluff, Sleepy Cuddles, Sensuality, Touching, Virgin Sherlock, Insecure John) – John likes mysteries. And every morning he dips into the local independent coffee bar with his newspaper and ponders another... one Sherlock Holmes.
Out of the Woods by SilentAuror (E, 20,471 w., 1 Ch. || Post S4, Romance, Slow Burn, Flirting, Drunk Sex, Practical Jokes, POV Sherlock, Bottomlock, Possessive John, Pining Sherlock, Frustrated Wanking, Frottage, Hand Jobs, Blow Jobs, First Kiss/Time, Virgin Sherlock, Love Confessions, Soft Sherlock, Dancing, Bum Appreciation, Hanging out with the Yard) – Sherlock is fairly certain that John has taken to flirting with him of late, but can't be entirely certain of it. At least, not until a case takes them into a forest, along with Lestrade's team and something happens that will change everything about their lives...
How To Unfold a Heart by elwinglyre (E, 25,477 w., 7 Ch. || Post S4 Fix It, BAMF John, Mentioned Eurus, POV First Person Sherlock, Case Fic, Fluff, Slow Burn, Topping from the Bottom, 3 Yr Old Rosie, Introspection, Sexual Fantasies, John Worship, Ogling, Hand Holding, Kidnapping, Domesticity, Sherlock Whump, First Kiss/Time, Doctor John, Caring John, Soft Sherlock, Sensuality, Touching, Crying, Love Confessions, Anxious Sherlock, Rimming, Toplock, Fingering, Bossy Bottom John) – To Sherlock’s dismay, John’s return to Baker Street with Rosie is only temporary. Sherlock’s daily visits to Regent Park with John and Rosie illuminate his lost childhood memories and missed opportunities. But with each trip to the park, Sherlock also feels a growing sense of hope. That is until the past horrors return unexpectedly in a cryptic note folded in the shape of a heart. To decipher the message, Sherlock must uncover the nature of the hearts around him, including his own.
A Quiet Life by DiscordantWords (M, 25,176 w., 6 Ch. || Post S4, Retirement, POV Sherlock, Awkwardness, Established Relationship, Family Dynamics, Minor Character Death, Questionable Parenting Choices, Non-Linear Narrative, 20 Year Old Rosie, Meddling Mycroft, Pining Sherlock, First Kiss, Love Confessions, Angst, Sherlock Whump) – There had been three days of silence and a funeral. Sherlock had the terrible feeling that whatever happened next would depend, entirely, on him.

Deck the Halls by itsalwaysyou_jw (T, 31,018 w., 24 Ch. || Advent Fic / Multiple One-Shots, Assorted Tags) – One Johnlock ficlet for every day leading up to Christmas. Who is ready for pining, first kisses, established Johnlock, and everything in between? This collection of stand-alone ficlets will have it all.
Gold Rush by ShirleyCarlton (E, 71,783 w., 17 Ch. || Post S3 / No Mary, Friends to Lovers, Mentions of Past Sexual Abuse, First Kiss, Case Fic, Slow Burn, Alternating POV, Switchlock, Angst with Happy Ending, Marriage Proposal, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Abduction, Anxious/Insecure Sherlock, Miscommunication, Emotional Lovemaking) – John has divorced Mary and pops round to 221B one evening to find Sherlock in the middle of a case. As Sherlock tries to find the identity of a young woman’s stalker, John realises he can no longer deny his feelings for Sherlock – which then, to their befuddlement, turn out to be mutual. Shy kisses and tentative embraces ensue. But will Sherlock be able to cast off a shadow from his past that he thinks might prevent John from wanting to stay?

WIPs to Become a W in 2021
Hello!
I start the year 2021 with many many WIPs. Although last year was full of inspiration, it was not full of actual writing, so hopefully this is the year for that!
I was inspired by the brilliant @simplyclockwork‘s concept to list out WIPs and summaries and then.. if you feel inclined, you can tell me which WIP you would be most interested in reading first. Or at all. But no pressure, naturally.
Big thanks to @heyblinken for her input on designs. xx
Let me know which one you’re the most interested in?
1.
The Son of the King
An arranged marriage fic, fantasy/castle/royalty AU.
Johnlock - Mycroft is the Crown Prince, Sherlock is the second Prince, they are married to Greg and John respectively. While the princes are out on a hunting trip, the castle is attacked and taken over. The king and many of the knights, servants, and villagers are slaughtered. The princes return to find the castle has been taken over by James Moriarty, ruler of a neighboring country who seeks to marry either Mycroft or Sherlock to gain control over their kingdom. They attempt to escape and then overthrow Moriarty. There will be a battle scene in there somewhere.
Probably tags: Dark fic, violence, sexual violence, MCD, BAMF Sherlock Mycroft and John, lots of death. Like a lot.
2.
This Much I Know
Halloween-themed “spooky” fic.
Johnlock - Set Post S4, John, Sherlock, and Rosie visit a large house Sherlock used to live in while he was growing up that has a ghost attached and a possible murder. They try to figure out who they are to each other before the ghost figures it out for them (aka tries to kill them)
Probable Tags: spooky fic, ghost, frightening atmosphere, love confessions, parent lock, trust issues
3.
The Little Bookshop by the Sea
Seaside murder mystery
Johnlock - John opens up a little bookshop in the country to discover it’s being broken into but nothing’s been stolen. His friend in the village, Mike, recommends seeking help from the recluse who lives in a small cottage at the edge of the town since the police say there’s nothing they can really do. The puzzle turns into a bigger adventure than he could have anticipated.
Probable tags: casefic, troubled pasts, bookstore fic, some light beekeeping
4.
An End to the Bitter Frosts
Part 2 of all we do is hide away
Johnlock - Sherlock returns home and tries to fit back into his life with John, who is Not alright. Mark makes a reappearance.
Probable tags: Angry John, Sherlock is trying, assault, Mental breakdown, Minor Injury, there will be a part 3 so cliffhanger-is
5.
Death or Glory
Casefic! - has nothing to do with the film.
Johnlock - Teenage boys are being murdered in a village, so Sherlock and John take Lestrade and go investigate. Fully thought out murder mystery plot.
Probable tags: Violence and murder, casefic, established Johnlock, homophobia, hurt/comfort, kidnapped
6.
Gorgeous, Beautiful
Getting together fic
Mystrade - Greg comes onto Mycroft while he’s drunk and Mycroft thinks Greg thinks he’s someone else.
Probable tags: Miscommunication, Drunken encounters, dubious consent but not really, Incredulous Mycroft
7.
Exclusively Mine
Miscommunication fic
Mystrade - Mycroft says the wrong name in bed and Greg realizes Mycroft’s seeing someone else as well as dating him. He gets upset and kicks Mycroft out of his bed and his life.
Probable tags: Miscommunication, open relationships but not really, Poor Mycroft, Greg has lots of baggage.
Tagging people who might be interested: @totallysilvergirl, @loveismyrevolution, @jobooksncoffee, @bakingsherlycakes, @inevitably-johnlocked, @jolieblack, @silentauroriamthereal, @johannadc, @vulpesmellifera, @simplyclockwork, @heyblinken, @shiplocks-of-love, @88thparallel, @7-percent

The Scarlet Letter: Let’s talk about RWBY’s male LGBT rep
I have been sitting on this post for nearly four weeks waiting until the 15th due to the Before the Dawn spoiler rules.
So let's start with a blunt statement: RWBY's male LGBT representation has not been good. If the series' handling of female LGBT rep is good (which... well there's worse shows) and the general standard for how you write LGBT characters in a show like this, its handling of male rep has been... how not to. And Before the Dawn kinda solidified the idea in my head that the show's handling of its male LGBT cast just isn't good enough, either by the standards of when RWBY began in 2013, or today in 2020 when compatively massive steps have been taken over the past decade to show a more diverse list of characters... or at least a more diverse list of female characters.
I don't wanna make this a pissing match over how over-or-under-represented male or female LGBT characters are, but I feel like it's safe to say that the majority of the trend-setters for modern romances, especially in western animation, have been between women. Korra and Asami from Korra, Chloe and Max from Life is Strange, Marceline and Bubblegum in Adventure Time, (insert the relevant Steven Universe characters here, never watched it), and more recently, Adora and Catra in She-Ra and Luz in Owl House.
Compatively, while studies have shown that in general male LGBT characters get more appearances on a purely numerical level, in general they're more one-off characters there to pad a roster, or played more for comedy (see Josh Gad in the Beauty and the Beast remake or the gay guy in Avengers Endgame that was more notable for how hard China and Russia snapped him out of existance). The only big male-LGBT focused media I can think of from the last decade would be Yuri On Ice, Moonlight, IDW's Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye (Chromedome/Rewind best pairing fuck you Roberts for issue 16) Love Simon, and the anime adaptation of Banana Fish.
So it's no surprise that RWBY basically follows these ideas. It's big romance is (unless the writers are very stupid) going to be between Blake and Yang, their first out character was Ilia, Coco got sent to the Book Dimension where she confirmed "I use my sunglasses to perv on women without their knowledge" which uh... yeah you can definitely tell RWBY is written by men... and Volume 6 had Saph and Terra being a good example of an LGBT couple without any real drama. In the last three years alone, the show has drastically increased its lesbian and bisexual characters, alongside even including its first out trans character in May Marigold (albeit only revealed on Twitter). In general, these depictions of sexuality have been pretty OK. Would have liked it if Ilia wasn't immediately written out of the show after Volume 5 as it made her feel a bit more disposable than intended but whatever, subject for another day.
RWBY's male rep though is a bit spottier. There's the plant bois in Volume 5's premiere, we nearly had Pilot Boi until some last-minute revisions, and... Scarlet.
Why Scarlet's a bad launchpad for male LGBT rep
I don't like Scarlet or how his sexuality has been handled. Scarlet's homosexuality wasn't revealed in the show, or by the writers, or even in anything that's actually canon. He's confirmed gay in his sole of dialogue in a non-canon fan anthology, where the manga's Twitter team had to say that Miles suggested the idea and approved of it.
In short, Scarlet is Dumbledore'd, where his sexuality is revealed in out-of-show material and in a way that doesn't make it supremely obvious (Miles himself never commented to confirm this so this news was limited in how far it could spread. I'm genuinely curious how many people still don't know Scarlet's gay), and Scarlet himself is a nothing character who was written out of the show after Volume 3 and only reappeared in Before The Dawn, half a decade after he vanished. Compared to Ilia, as this came out after Ilia's entire arc in Volume 5, it's not a great starting point for mlm rep. But things would have been forgiven if it had gotten better, if the show did have more male LGBT characters introduced, even just on the Saphron/Terra level of just being around for a few episodes before leaving. Then it would have been a misfire but then we could all say "Things got better."
It... didn't. Which is why when Before the Dawn released in 2020, a full two years after Scarlet was first confirmed gay, while the franchise had more than doubled its wlw rep, Scarlet remained the one male character in the entire franchise who had a name and liked men. I remember vividly a fake leak for After The Fall which claimed Yatsuhashi would come out to Velvet and admit to having a crush on Fox. And I remember as well how many people were disappointed when it was said to be false, because it would have been nice for Yatsuhashi's character, especially after the fleshing out he gets in the CFVY books. If Yatsu had come out as gay in the books I'd like his writing enough to say he's a good case for rep, albeit with the caveat of "This is all in side material." But in reality, the leak was fake and Coco was confirmed gay instead.
Unfortunately, Before the Dawn proceeded to ruin Scarlet and made me at times feel genuinely uncomfortable as a queer man! Let's talk about that.
Before The Dawn is crap and Scarlet's writing is borderline offensive
I hate Before the Dawn. It's... bad. I read it while on a vacation and the only solace I had about the entire thing was that I'd bought an M&M chocolate bar. The bar was finished before the book. That bummed me out. It's not a very well written book, the prose is very Early 2010s YA Writer, none of the characters are memorable and there's various Fun Incidents like "NGDO using children as bait for Grimm," and "Neptune's hydrophpobia being used as a threat to torture him and the scene is played for comedy."
Theo was cool. I can't wait to see him as written by good writers, he should be a highlight of the Vacuo arc.
I had two hopes for Before the Dawn- "Don't be bad," and "Let Scarlet and Sage be well written." I'd liked how After The Fall had handled some of its characters (barring, y'know, Coco perving on women), especially Fox and Yatsu who were surprising in how much I liked them. I was looking forward to seeing Myers give Sage and Scarlet similar treatment- two relatively nothing characters meant he'd have a blank slate to write them however he wanted, he could give them unique personalties and if nothing else it could be cool to see their Semblances.
And then I read the book. (Sage fans I am so sorry for you, you got baited harder than Johnlock fans)
Scarlet's a giant dickhead in the book. It's his sole character trait and his inner monologues go on, and on, and on about how much he hates Sun, how he revels in mocking him. Most of his dialogue is sarcastic put-downs about Sun and how lame he is, and Sun is never properly allowed to defend himself or point out how going with Blake meant he was able to help save Haven Academy.
(hey remember when Sun in Volume 6 expressly says to Blake "I was a bad leader for ditching Neptune and the others, and I need to work on that" only for Before the Dawn to have him staunchly refuse to accept that he let the team down? I don't think Myers did but I do)
Scarlet being a ratty bitch would be one thing if, again, the franchise had done more rep. He'd still be a badly written character, but it wouldn't sting as much. But because Scarlet is still the only expressly confirmed male LGBT character in canon (the book teases that Nolan is gay but there's never confirmation either way beyond him smiling at Scarlet), it means that he has to represent that entire ideal. So when the one gay man in Remnant is being an asshole and a snide loser, that means that by extension, this is how the franchise sees gay men. And that fucking sucks! I wanted to come out of Before The Dawn singing its praises, I wanted to like the book, but it was a massive letdown, especially coming off of the other big 2020 RWBY controversy involving gay characters.
Yeah. We're doing this.
Clover and Fair Game: Technically not queerbaiting. BUT:
Let's pre-empt this: Clover wasn't queerbaiting, and Fair Game, while cool and I dig it, kudos to them for becoming one of the top 5 RWBY pairings on AO3 in one year that's fucking impressive (I say with mild malice as an IronQrow main), never had a chance. The writing never seriously boosted it barring one interaction which was flirty (them talking in the lobby of the Schnee Manor), and everything else was out of show boosting through the social media teams and CRWBY hyping it themselves by saying they liked it. If you wanna blame people, blame the animators who went off-script with stuff like Kim Newman adding the wink as a deliberate nod to the Volume 4 waitress, or the social media team deliberately using the same policies for Fair Game as they do for Renora and Bumblebee.
It wasn't Eddy's fault that things escalated, and he himself has said that in retrospect, he should have warned people that this never had a shot.
But I can't blame the Fair Game fanbase. Because Fair Game took off like wildfire. It came right as the fanbase began seriously asking for more male rep, Qrow's pretty hot, and the Clover wink came right after the Great IronQrow Reawakening of November 9th, 2019. The rocket was primed, and they rode it to the moon. Finally, to these people, after seven years RWBY seemed to be doing something with mlm rep in show. People started getting into RWBY just for Clover and Qrow's interactions. And if heroes were boring, Watts and Tyrian also had a fantastic dynamic that made Nuts and Volts one of the more popular villain ships overnight. Things seemed to be turning around! RWBY was remembering that gay men existed! You could hear the choir sing!
... And for those people, that meant that episode 12 hit like Truck-Kun.
People got pissed. People were horrified. And it didn't help that some members of CRWBY had said in the build-up that episode 12 would have some shots that made them nauseous (probably the Tyrian thumb thing) Out of context, it looked to these fans like CRWBY were basically laughing at their suffering, like they were saying "Lol, you thought you had a chance, get fucked, I hope your vomit burns on the way up."
Yeah, Fair Game was never gonna be canon, and I think some people ran too far with it. But in the wider context of how desperate RWBY's mlm community had gotten for basic crumbs of content? I can see why they'd run with what they had. The writers aren't at fault for what happened, but CRWBY didn't help matters. And that desperate mix of what felt like official backing from the crew, jokes about how cute the ship was, and the hope that finally the show would have onscreen rep? I can see why people ran with it.
So why is the show more lackluster in depicting mlm characters?
Money. Let's be honest, most RWBY fans don't care if the show doesn't have good male rep. I'm willing to bet some of you reading this won't care and just dismiss it as not being that big a problem. I don't think the writers care if the show doesn't have good mlm rep because they're not poaching that market. They're after what they see as a bigger, more lucrative market, which in this case is female LGBT rep. That gets people buying games, watching shows, raising awareness and boosting awareness of your property, which means you make more money. In short: Two women kissing hits more markets and generates more attention than two men.
Am I saying that Miles, Monty and Kerry deliberately sat down seven years ago and said "We're not doing gay men because it won't generate enough ad revenue and traffic to be worth the loss in revenue from homophobes?" No, that's silly. But I'm saying that it's less important for them, and it shows in the things that are small and add up. Things like Miles not verifying Scarlet's sexuality or retweeting the manga account's confirmation to spread the message (compared to how he enthusiastically confirmed Ilia being a lesbian himself during the Reddit AMA). It shows in how Pilot Boi would have been the first mlm character only to die in his second full episode until M&K were told about the Bury Your Gays trope. It shows in how Shannon believes that Ozma is "megaqueer" and Miles jokingly laughs it off instead of confirming it, leaving it to just be Shannon's headcanon. It shows in how actor shipping is compared between the mlm and wlw ships, where Arryn and Barbara's frequent pushes for Bumblebee are seen as "official confirmation that it's endgame" while Michael and Kerry saying they enjoy Seamonkeys is treated as "well it would be cute if they did it, but they're never going to."
I'm not gonna say anything like "CRWBY are gonna have Qrow end up with a woman like Robyn out of spite against the bad apples of the Fair Game crowd." I'm not gonna say that I don't think CRWBY cares about male representation in the series. It is, however, definitely a low priority for them, and because that leads to gaffes like Scarlet's writing in Before The Dawn being offensive in his depiction, it only makes the contrast between the sexes all the more painfully apparent.
I'm kinda tired of waiting for Rooster Teeth to show that they do care about mlm. I'm kinda tired of RWBY's male rep being written like it came from a 1993 time capsule where I have to enhance the screen to see a guy holding a sign of Sun's abs or be content with the only onscreen rep still being the plant bois in Volume 5. I'm tired of how often the crew dances around answering basic questions about sexuality (and age, and birthdays, and heights, and so on) by treating it as a spoiler question, as if just wanting to know what way people swing would ever be a spoiler. I'm just... tired of all this. When the best mlm rep in Rooster Teeth's history remains the two dads in Camp Camp who show up in a few episodes, that should say something really bad about your company and your biases (To say nothing of the recent Red vs Blue seasons and their blatant queerbaiting for Grif and Simmons and the whole can of worms that is Donut).
I'd like to not feel like I'm borderline unwelcome because I'd like to see two men in this show kiss, and that the sole thing that represents people like me in this show is some British twat who complains about sand.
I'd just like to feel like my sexuality isn't a joke to Rooster Teeth (or at the very least, be like Donut and have it be a funny one). But at this point after the last few years? I feel like a very uncomfortable punchline to them. And it just sucks.

johnlock- asexual lovers, a new mystery perhaps? (is it a ghost or is it a serial killer?) (BANTER PLZ) hope these notes make sense,,,
I hope this was what you were asking for. I had fun writing this, thanks for the prompt!
“Nonsense!”
“Sherlock, is it really so hard to believe?”
“That a ghost of all things killed those men? Yes, I’d say it is. You know very well my feelings on the Supernatural John, and you’d do well to remember them,”
John sighed and rested his forehead in the palm of his hand. It had been twenty hours since Lestrade had called to inform them of the case, and neither had slept since. Needless to say, they were both a little snippy.
“And why is it, again, that you don’t believe in ghosts? If people can be as smart as you and Mycroft, and the universe can be as infinite as it is, then why do you rule out ghosts, of all things?”
“I believe in things I can see, John,” Sherlock said haughtily, “and as of yet, I have not seen a ghost in my line of work.”
“Yeah, well, you also didn’t think the Earth revolved around the sun and nearly shot me, your boyfriend, when you lost at Cluedo, so we both know your knowledge isn’t impenetrable.” The doctor leaned back in his chair, seemingly pleased with his argument. Sherlock sniffed.
“That’s besides the point. What I’m saying is that it makes far more sense for it to be a serial killer whose very good at getting into places undetected than a ghost. Remember the Mayfly Man? Perhaps it’s something similar to that.”
John remembered the case well. It was one of their first after Sherlock has returned from the “grave.” John had taken his reappearance well enough. First he had punched him.
Then he had kissed him.
And thus began their relationship. It was rocky, like everything in their lives, but it worked out well enough. There had been the problem of John having to break off his courtship with Mary, which had only been going on for about a month, but they had really hit it off. No matter, Sherlock was back, and she was really just an attempt to get over the previously deceased detective.
Then there had been the mocking from Anderson and Donavan, which had been silenced with a few well placed punches, curtesy of John. He wasn’t above hurting assholes.
Their biggest problem had arose after their fourth date, when John had mentioned... well, you know, to Sherlock. The poor man had broken down in tears, only the second time John had ever seen Sherlock cry.
He eventually explained that he was asexual, and if John wished to leave him, that was okay. In John’s opinion, it most certainly was not.
John explained rather firmly to the detective that he loved him more than anything in the world, and if a little thing like sex were enough to come between them, then he didn’t deserve Sherlock.
And it really didn’t matter. John would have enjoyed sex, sure, but he would’ve hated it if he knew Sherlock didn’t want to. Their relationship was perfect as is. They slept in the same bed, kissed, and cuddled, but other than that, nothing had really changed since the fall. They still argued, John still had to get the milk, and there was still the occasional head in the fridge. Their evolved relationship just made all of that somehow more pleasant. Perhaps it was the fact that after every argument, he could gather Sherlock in his arms and remind himself that it would all work out fine.
Sherlock snapped in his face.
“John?”
“Huh?”
“You were in a daze. Are you sure you aren’t coming down with something?” Sherlock’s eyebrows pinched together.
“Aw, are you worried about me?” John teasingly asked.
“Er... no! You would just be a hindrance on the case if you were sick!”
“Sure, Sherlock,” John said with a smile, “And no, I feel perfectly fine. I was just remembering some things is all. I suppose it could be like the Mayfly Man. Maybe a Dragonfly Man? Beetle Bro? Caterpillar Killer?”
“Shut up John,” Sherlock scoffed, but a smile betrayed his face.
His phone dinged, and once he read it he shot to his feet.
“Yes!” the detective exclaimed, “Another victim!” John joined him at the door, and they both grabbed their coats. As they stepped out onto the street, Sherlock pulled on that ridiculous had and turned to John.
“The game,” he said, “is on.”

My thoughts
Okay, first of all, I promise that I do actually have a Cafe AU post ready to go, but I think I’m gonna post it tomorrow because currently everything is chaos. That being said, I would very much like to talk about what happened in last night’s episode, so this rant will contain spoilers for season 15. Feel free to skip it if you aren’t interested.
I wrote this in the dark in my film lesson, because I had to get it down, so if it doesn’t make too much sense, I apologise.
Yesterday, you have no idea how stressed I was. I am only on season 12, and I live in the UK, but I was worried about the election, and I was worried that Cas was gonna die. And I knew, that when I woke up in the morning, I would know. In fact, I was expecting to wake up to the bad news.
When I woke up, of seven songs my alarm could have chosen to play, the universe decided on Carry On My Wayward Son.
I decided my best bet to find out the news quickly was on here, and sure enough, the top of my dashboard was a gif set with Cas saying ‘I love you’. I’m sure that you know I ship Destiel, but I wasn’t prepared to be that much of a clown just yet. I assumed it was a ‘I love you... I love all of you’ type thing, or someone had just decided to put those words over the top.
Then, a bit further down: a meme from The Good Place, which revealed that not only was Destiel canon, but Putin was resigning? (Not entirely sure if that is true, I haven’t had chance to fact check yet).
My first thought was not surprise or happiness or shock. My first thought was “I’m gonna have to rewrite my essay.” (I’m doing it on queer baiting and used Supernatural as the main example).
Not too long after, @helplessly-johnlocked very helpfully (thank you!) sent a link to the clip from the episode, and holy shit. I didn’t even react. And - like I expected - Cas is dead. And he is one of my all time favourite characters. But I couldn’t focus on that.
I may have only been in this fandom for a few months, (and I do not envy long time Destiel shippers) but before I even knew what Supernatural was, I knew the word Destiel. We’ll come back to the whole ‘bury the gays’ later, when I’ve actually had time to think about it. But the sheer emotion I felt that a ship that I have adored and read countless stories about had finally been properly mentioned was overwhelming. To be honest, the fact that Cas is dead hasn’t even processed yet, I don’t think. I’m in denial.
But then I had another thought. It’s 2020. Anything could happen. Maybe Cas will come back.
But if we talk about it from a narrative point of view for a second - and note that I haven’t watched the full episode, so this is just based on what I know - this has to be the greatest slow burn love story of all time, reciprocated or not. Ten years. Several deaths. Usually impossible odds. And a musical.
Every single time he had to choose, Cas chose Dean. Over his own family (multiple times), over God, over his chance to do what he thought was right. They have fought, and they always make up. If Cas was any other character, Dean would have killed him a long time ago. If they didn’t know Cas before he betrayed them at the end of season 6, he would have been dead a long time ago. But Cas is Dean’s family. Whether he returns that love or not.
For Cas to admit his feelings, leaving Dean - a man infamous for not being able to deal with emotions - with absolutely no time to process this information, and then to immediately die makes no sense. And yeah, the supernatural writers love killing off their LGBT characters (RIP Charlie) but this takes it to a whole other level.
Does this mean that I think Cas is definitely going to make a reappearance? No. But is there a small chance? Perhaps.
Think about it this way: if you had asked me a year ago whether I thought a global pandemic was possible, I would have laughed in your face. If you had asked me a few months ago whether I thought I would ever read fan fiction, I would have thought you were insane. If you asked me last week if I thought Destiel would become canon, I would have cried laughing at the idea.
2020 has been a wild year. Let’s hope it has one more surprise in store.

https://rwbyconversations.tumblr.com/post/626550438587678720/the-scarlet-letter-lets-talk-about-rwbys-male
Can’t even say I stan RT since I helped in developing your own break in RT’s abusive business practices.
So let’s start with a blunt statement: RWBY’s male LGBT representation has not been good. If the series’ handling of female LGBT rep is good (which… well there’s worse shows) and the general standard for how you write LGBT characters in a show like this, its handling of male rep has been… how not to. And Before the Dawn kinda solidified the idea in my head that the show’s handling of its male LGBT cast just isn’t good enough, either by the standards of when RWBY began in 2013, or today in 2020 when compatively massive steps have been taken over the past decade to show a more diverse list of characters… or at least a more diverse list of female characters.
So how do you make good male LGBT representation? If we’re talking about how something is done badly, you’d think some ground rules would be established. ... Yeah, he never does that.
It’s big romance is (unless the writers are very stupid) going to be between Blake and Yang, their first out character was Ilia, Coco got sent to the Book Dimension where she confirmed “I use my sunglasses to perv on women without their knowledge” which uh… yeah you can definitely tell RWBY is written by men… and Volume 6 had Saph and Terra being a good example of an LGBT couple without any real drama. In the last three years alone, the show has drastically increased its lesbian and bisexual characters, alongside even including its first out trans character in May Marigold (albeit only revealed on Twitter). In general, these depictions of sexuality have been pretty OK. Would have liked it if Ilia wasn’t immediately written out of the show after Volume 5 as it made her feel a bit more disposable than intended but whatever, subject for another day.
A. What examples do we have of Bumbleby being canon? One or two animation things and voice actors? Cool, when’s White Knight becoming canon.
B. I’ve heard Barbara say similar shit. Acting like that’s a male thing is fucking sexist.
C. I’m sorry but by every single standard of LGBT writing I’ve heard-wouldn’t they be considered tokens and flat caricatures? Since they’re so irrelevant and have so little character? They’re barely even characters INCLUDING their kid.
Sorry but considering how there’s no ground rules made for what is good LGBT rep- I can only go off what others have said. And so many, OVERWHLEMINGLY MANY, people have said Saphron and Terra aren’t good.
D. Okay the Illa thing is yet another example of why ground rules need to be set. Saphron and Terra BOTH are written out in Volume 6 so wouldn’t they get chewed out too? What makes Illa getting written out different or more disposable?
RWBY’s male rep though is a bit spottier. There’s the plant bois in Volume 5’s premiere, we nearly had Pilot Boi until some last-minute revisions, and… Scarlet.
Look about the same as the female LGBT audience to me. Why is this so bad?
“Why Scarlet’s a bad launchpad for male LGBT rep”
I don’t like Scarlet or how his sexuality has been handled. Scarlet’s homosexuality wasn’t revealed in the show, or by the writers, or even in anything that’s actually canon. He’s confirmed gay in his sole of dialogue in a non-canon fan anthology, where the manga’s Twitter team had to say that Miles suggested the idea and approved of it.
In short, Scarlet is Dumbledore’d, where his sexuality is revealed in out-of-show material and in a way that doesn’t make it supremely obvious (Miles himself never commented to confirm this so this news was limited in how far it could spread. I’m genuinely curious how many people still don’t know Scarlet’s gay), and Scarlet himself is a nothing character who was written out of the show after Volume 3 and only reappeared in Before The Dawn, half a decade after he vanished. Compared to Ilia, as this came out after Ilia’s entire arc in Volume 5, it’s not a great starting point for mlm rep. But things would have been forgiven if it had gotten better, if the show did have more male LGBT characters introduced, even just on the Saphron/Terra level of just being around for a few episodes before leaving. Then it would have been a misfire but then we could all say “Things got better.”
Why should I care?
See, part of the job of a critic is to make the problems understandable to the audience. I emphasized ground rules because it gives the reader a base level understanding of what constitutes as good in this case. Why should I think Scarlet is bad when Saphron and Terra are on the same level and you said they were at least acceptable?
It… didn’t. And I remember as well how many people were disappointed when it was said to be false, because it would have been nice for Yatsuhashi’s character, especially after the fleshing out he gets in the CFVY books. If Yatsu had come out as gay in the books I’d like his writing enough to say he’s a good case for rep, albeit with the caveat of “This is all in side material.” But in reality, the leak was fake and Coco was confirmed gay instead.
I remember the same leak. Yatsuhashi also disappeared at the same time and even if he was fleshed out-he’s still irrelevant to the show so wouldn’t he be bad? And if it’s about having fleshed out characters, why did Illa whose a fully realized character get shaded while effective background characters praised?
Unfortunately, Before the Dawn proceeded to ruin Scarlet and made me at times feel genuinely uncomfortable as a queer man! Let’s talk about that.
And people said the same about Saphron and Terra and people get backlash for praising them over other lesbian characters.
I hate Before the Dawn. It’s… bad. I read it while on a vacation and the only solace I had about the entire thing was that I’d bought an M&M chocolate bar. The bar was finished before the book. That bummed me out. It’s not a very well written book, the prose is very Early 2010s YA Writer, none of the characters are memorable and there’s various Fun Incidents like “NGDO using children as bait for Grimm,” and “Neptune’s hydrophpobia being used as a threat to torture him and the scene is played for comedy.”
A. NDGO is repeatedly shown to be massive assholes in the book.
And B. I can’t really find anything wrong there. In one of my favorite shows, Justice League Unlimited, criminals get threatened with actual torture and even death and it’s treated as a joke. Yeah the context is different in that the victim are criminals but both the villains and Neptune get over it so quickly I see no real problem here. Especially since Jaune’s own low self worth was a joke up to Volume 5.
Theo was cool. I can’t wait to see him as written by good writers, he should be a highlight of the Vacuo arc.
Don’t go blaming E.C. Myers for this- Miles and Kerry helped. You’d have to call them shit writers too.
I had two hopes for Before the Dawn- “Don’t be bad,” and “Let Scarlet and Sage be well written.” I’d liked how After The Fall had handled some of its characters (barring, y'know, Coco perving on women), especially Fox and Yatsu who were surprising in how much I liked them. I was looking forward to seeing Myers give Sage and Scarlet similar treatment- two relatively nothing characters meant he’d have a blank slate to write them however he wanted, he could give them unique personalties and if nothing else it could be cool to see their Semblances.
You know how frustrating it is to see people blame Miles and Kerry for shit that Monty had a hand in and may have even been responsible for?
Yeah well we finally found the flipped version-
Miles and Kerry worked with Myers on the book. Just as Monty is just as much at fault as Miles and Kerry, they’re just as much at fault as Myers.
And then I read the book. (Sage fans I am so sorry for you, you got baited harder than Johnlock fans)
I thought we were talking about male LGBT rep.
Scarlet’s a giant dickhead in the book. It’s his sole character trait and his inner monologues go on, and on, and on about how much he hates Sun, how he revels in mocking him. Most of his dialogue is sarcastic put-downs about Sun and how lame he is, and Sun is never properly allowed to defend himself or point out how going with Blake meant he was able to help save Haven Academy.
You mean like how character criticized Yang for being so reckless even though she was trying to save Blake?
It shouldn’t matter what the intent or results are- Sun and Yang still did bad things and affected the people around them. They should be criticized, especially Sun here since A. He’s still doing it in the book, B. He hasn’t had any real flaws in the show which means his dynamics and interaction are limited and C. This addresses what people bitched at him about in Volumes 4 and 5 thus robbing them of the excuse to chew him out anymore.
(hey remember when Sun in Volume 6 expressly says to Blake “I was a bad leader for ditching Neptune and the others, and I need to work on that” only for Before the Dawn to have him staunchly refuse to accept that he let the team down? I don’t think Myers did but I do)
Remember how characters in RWBY don’t always learn their lesson, especially when it’s related to mental issues like...say....losing their parents and trying to run from their problems?
Also remember how MILES AND KERRY ALSO HELPED WRITE THAT BOOK?
Scarlet being a ratty bitch would be one thing if, again, the franchise had done more rep. He’d still be a badly written character, but it wouldn’t sting as much. But because Scarlet is still the only expressly confirmed male LGBT character in canon (the book teases that Nolan is gay but there’s never confirmation either way beyond him smiling at Scarlet), it means that he has to represent that entire ideal.
Fun fact: LGBT people can be assholes.
In fact, Scarlet would be the ONLY LGBT character to be snide in the show. Kind of makes him unique in that regard. ...If he was an asshole in canon. When in canon, he’s portrayed as hurt and bitter over Sun’s repeated irresponsibility and doing what anyone would do in his situation.
So honestly, he’s pretty fucking human which I would praised BEYOND being LGBT.
Yeah. We’re doing this.
Remember, you choose to do all this.
Clover and Fair Game: Technically not queerbaiting. BUT:
But nothing. Once again, without any ground rules for what you constitute as ‘queerbaiting’- I only have myself to rely on. And just about every serious definition says Queerbaiting is baiting LGBT rep or pairings to get people to watch the show.
Issue? Not only was Fair Game not used to promote the show, there are other LGBT characters in RWBY. You can’t be queerbaited anymore than a straight person can be ‘straightbaited’ (We’ll be getting into SO MUCH MORE than this later...).
Let’s pre-empt this: Clover wasn’t queerbaiting, and Fair Game, while cool and I dig it, kudos to them for becoming one of the top 5 RWBY pairings on AO3 in one year that’s fucking impressive (I say with mild malice as an IronQrow main), never had a chance.
So nothing I should give a shit about since marketing teams often work detached from the actual product and are notoriously CUTTHROAT.
It wasn’t Eddy’s fault that things escalated, and he himself has said that in retrospect, he should have warned people that this never had a shot.
But I can’t blame the Fair Game fanbase. Because Fair Game took off like wildfire. It came right as the fanbase began seriously asking for more male rep, Qrow’s pretty hot, and the Clover wink came right after the Great IronQrow Reawakening of November 9th, 2019. The rocket was primed, and they rode it to the moon. Finally, to these people, after seven years RWBY seemed to be doing something with mlm rep in show. People started getting into RWBY just for Clover and Qrow’s interactions. And if heroes were boring, Watts and Tyrian also had a fantastic dynamic that made Nuts and Volts one of the more popular villain ships overnight. Things seemed to be turning around! RWBY was remembering that gay men existed! You could hear the choir sing!
... You JUST said that show didn’t bolster the ship aside from one interaction (one that pales to the shit I use to say in private to fuck with people). It was obviously NOT meant to be a serious component of the show. If people got into a show for something it was never meant to stick to- it’s their own fault for when that part falls away.
… And for those people, that meant that episode 12 hit like Truck-Kun.
People got pissed. People were horrified. And it didn’t help that some members of CRWBY had said in the build-up that episode 12 would have some shots that made them nauseous (probably the Tyrian thumb thing) Out of context, it looked to these fans like CRWBY were basically laughing at their suffering, like they were saying “Lol, you thought you had a chance, get fucked, I hope your vomit burns on the way up.”
Yeah, Fair Game was never gonna be canon, and I think some people ran too far with it. But in the wider context of how desperate RWBY’s mlm community had gotten for basic crumbs of content? I can see why they’d run with what they had. The writers aren’t at fault for what happened, but CRWBY didn’t help matters. And that desperate mix of what felt like official backing from the crew, jokes about how cute the ship was, and the hope that finally the show would have onscreen rep? I can see why people ran with it.
Ah huh ah huh ah huh-
Now do that for the first three Volumes of the show with a bigger fan favorite, more build up and kill one half of it off at the end of the show’s big dark turn while the creators are even MORE unsympathetic.
Sorry but when compared to Arkos, this looks fucking minscule. And you invoked the Arkos comparison due to the numerous parallels. And just like with the Arkos fans, I’ll disregard this without a second thought.
‘But Mlm are STARVED for content-’
Then go somewhere else. I’ve been saying this to your Wlw AND Straight counterparts for years. You are not entitled to have ‘a meal’. The show didn’t advertise in universe around rep- That is not the point. This is like saying you hate nachoes because it dares to have chips instead of more toppings.
So why is the show more lackluster in depicting mlm characters?
I don’t think you ever answered that the question ‘is the show’s mlm lackluster?’ because you spent a third of this post talking about something you basically admit doesn’t count.
Money. Let’s be honest, most RWBY fans don’t care if the show doesn’t have good male rep. I’m willing to bet some of you reading this won’t care and just dismiss it as not being that big a problem.
I dismiss all the romance related shit as not being that big of a problem, so what?
I don’t think the writers care if the show doesn’t have good mlm rep because they’re not poaching that market. They’re after what they see as a bigger, more lucrative market, which in this case is female LGBT rep. That gets people buying games, watching shows, raising awareness and boosting awareness of your property, which means you make more money. In short: Two women kissing hits more markets and generates more attention than two men.
I’d believe that if not for the fact that there is barely any lesbian merch for RWBY, which would be the key way to cash in on that market and squeeze them for as much money as possible. In fact, there’s barely ANY shipping merch from Rooster Teeth. Rather unusual if they’re trying to cash in on a market.
‘Well what’s YOUR explanation?’
Easy: Misandry and moving goalposts.
Guys notoriously get shat on in the fandom more than women. Jaune is STILL being called a spotlight stealing MAry Sue and numerous people are siding against Ironwood because he’s a man. So making good male LGBT rep would just be inviting more pipe bombs in the mail.
And a large amount of people like to claim RWBY has yet to give GOOD female LGBT rep, constantly raising the bar to get what they want. And considering they make up the original hatedom in the show- they naturally hold more power.
Tl;Dr- You fucked yourselves out of good male rep by having male characters having any focus whatsoever be a death sentence.
Am I saying that Miles, Monty and Kerry deliberately sat down seven years ago and said “We’re not doing gay men because it won’t generate enough ad revenue and traffic to be worth the loss in revenue from homophobes?” No, that’s silly. But I’m saying that it’s less important for them, and it shows in the things that are small and add up. Things like Miles not verifying Scarlet’s sexuality or retweeting the manga account’s confirmation to spread the message (compared to how he enthusiastically confirmed Ilia being a lesbian himself during the Reddit AMA). It shows in how Pilot Boi would have been the first mlm character only to die in his second full episode until M&K were told about the Bury Your Gays trope. It shows in how Shannon believes that Ozma is “megaqueer” and Miles jokingly laughs it off instead of confirming it, leaving it to just be Shannon’s headcanon. It shows in how actor shipping is compared between the mlm and wlw ships, where Arryn and Barbara’s frequent pushes for Bumblebee are seen as “official confirmation that it’s endgame” while Michael and Kerry saying they enjoy Seamonkeys is treated as “well it would be cute if they did it, but they’re never going to.”
The whole point of AMA is answer questions, one of which was ‘is Illa a lesbian’ among SEVERAL others.
Yeah and Illa gets called a psycho lesbian.
Yeah and no other voice actor headcanon has been accepted. In fact, Kara pushes for White Knight and the writers don’t even so much as acknowledge that unlike Shannon. Also I dunno what ‘megaqueer’ means but his only on screen relationship was straight so that’s probably why it wasn’t confirmed.
Not the creators, don’t care.
I’m not gonna say anything like “CRWBY are gonna have Qrow end up with a woman like Robyn out of spite against the bad apples of the Fair Game crowd.” I’m not gonna say that I don’t think CRWBY cares about male representation in the series. It is, however, definitely a low priority for them, and because that leads to gaffes like Scarlet’s writing in Before The Dawn being offensive in his depiction, it only makes the contrast between the sexes all the more painfully apparent.
Again, the female side ain’t much better. Fuck, the straight side isn’t much better. This was never a focus of the show.
I’m kinda tired of waiting for Rooster Teeth to show that they do care about mlm. I’m kinda tired of RWBY’s male rep being written like it came from a 1993 time capsule where I have to enhance the screen to see a guy holding a sign of Sun’s abs or be content with the only onscreen rep still being the plant bois in Volume 5. I’m tired of how often the crew dances around answering basic questions about sexuality (and age, and birthdays, and heights, and so on) by treating it as a spoiler question, as if just wanting to know what way people swing would ever be a spoiler. I’m just… tired of all this. When the best mlm rep in Rooster Teeth’s history remains the two dads in Camp Camp who show up in a few episodes, that should say something really bad about your company and your biases (To say nothing of the recent Red vs Blue seasons and their blatant queerbaiting for Grif and Simmons and the whole can of worms that is Donut).
And their best rep in wlw according to some people is a psycho lesbian.
This is all just personal opinion that is next to useless without the basis needed for clear understanding. I don’t know what you would consider good male LGBT rep aside from a squeaky clean good guy...and many would decry that as condescending and unrealistic.
What can they do except ignore EVERYONE and just do whatever they feel like?
P.S. Someone’s representation is NOT their view on LGBT people. Especially since, as I have said, the reception of said rep can be outright contradictory.
I’d like to not feel like I’m borderline unwelcome because I’d like to see two men in this show kiss, and that the sole thing that represents people like me in this show is some British twat who complains about sand.
Oh fuck off. I’m also apart of a minority group (autists) and yet you don’t see me winging about how unwelcome I feel because there’s no autistic characters. I relate to characters like Ruby not because they have shallow autistic traits but because I constantly struggle with the same ideological dilemma Ruby does: the struggle to keep doing good in an uncaring, cruel world. THAT is what you should find relatable and welcome. Not something like sexuality.
I’d just like to feel like my sexuality isn’t a joke to Rooster Teeth (or at the very least, be like Donut and have it be a funny one). But at this point after the last few years? I feel like a very uncomfortable punchline to them. And it just sucks.
Cool-Welcome to club. You know, since EVERY sexuality has been used a punchline by Rooster Teeth.
Your sexuality should be the LAST thing that you use to find being welcome, especially with a god damn company. And you have no one to blame for your feelings but yourself here.
Your post is damn near useless and I don’t even know how honest that RT stuff is considering Miles and Kerry get away while E.C. Myers gets blamed for stuff you don’t like.

Andreil
a chance to start again by eikoexe (M | Incomplete | 10/?)
Andrew Minyard was a consulting detective - probably one of the best. He lived a life alone and only kept well to his demands, solving more crimes than nobody could think possible. Wymack usually said he was stuck up on the job, Renee had been suggesting he finds himself someone to live with, just so he wouldn’t live a life full of solitude. Andrew said he didn’t need it, didn’t want it, that he was perfectly fine the way he was. But what if one day he met a boy who stubbornly tripped into his life? Who had been wanted by his father for running away? Who needed a place to stay… and who needed a home?
And so Andrew’s life changed when he met Neil Josten.
–
Or alternatively, a Sherlock AU where instead of Johnlock solving crimes, we get our Andreil boys.
Something, Nothing & Everything by TheBashfulPoet (E | 139,900 | 28/28)
Neil Josten is yet another name in a long list of identities used to hide a boy long since dead from a past blood had been spilled to forget. Essentially, he is and always will be nothing. And yet there has always been one thing that made Neil Josten real: music. After his mother’s death, music and singing were the only things tying him the threads of reality by the strap of a well-worn guitar. Too bad he’s pretty sure that it’s also going to be the thing to kill him. Especially when Kevin Day, international rock star and blast of Neil’s past comes waltzing back into his life demanding he joins the upstart and infamous band EXY as its new vocalist. To make matters worse, Kevin’s unofficial shadow, Andrew Minyard with a rap sheet taller than he is has taken an interest in the lie that Neil Josten and has made it his mission to uncover the bloodied truth that lies beneath.
By all accounts, Neil should just pick up his guitar and disappear like he’s done so many times before, but the chance to be real and seen is almost enough for him to plant his feet for the first time in 11 years he’s been running. Going into the spotlight means certain death, but Neil’s just not so sure that leaving it would mean anything different.
stars may collide by broship_addict, llheji (M | 20,664 | 2/2)
Moonlighting as Abram, member of the city's crime-fighting Foxes, Neil is doing a very bad job at staying under the radar. He's busy enough between his friends, patrol, and bickering with Andrew at work, but with the Ravens gang finally within reach and the reappearance of the Monster, he might have bitten more than he can chew.
(Or, how both Neil and Andrew accidentally fall in love with the same person twice. Lame.)
You Made a Monster Out of Me by basicallymonsters (M | Incomplete | 3/?)
He realizes that everyone feels exactly the same way he does, filthy and buzzed and understood and angry. His eyes find Andrew again, sober but animated like the drums are a live wire and he’s electric.
He thinks, if he could be part of this, if he could stand in the middle of the stage in a garden full of monsters, and sing the audience’s veins open, he would never need another drink, or another moment on court.
Prompt: Andreil in a rock band setting – tattoos, harsh lighting, calloused fingers, Andrew’s sweaty arms, Neil’s striking blue eyes, someone’s excellent voice, an uncomfortable undercurrent of drug abuse.
don’t take that sinner from me by wesninskids (M | Incomplete | 2/?)
In Bono, Alabama, a southern town where nobody ever goes, Neil Josten is a blind boy who used to read and write stories. Now he tells them aloud for his friend to write down, but things are quick to turn bland where there’s no color to see. He finds comfort in religion, thinking God can give him his eyes.
Then Andrew Minyard arrives in town in a dusty Impala and a crumpled suit, claiming he’s there to help Renee Walker take care of the church after the local priest’s death. Everyone soon starts wondering what his motives are and why he’d exile himself to a dead-end like theirs, mistrusting every word—but they’re after the wrong threat. Disillusioned and disappointed by religion, this lonely man of God came for a greater mission than preaching and blessing. He’s after something, and he might have just found it.
The blind boy of the town will either be his salvation or damnation, and he’s not sure which one yet.

doe & josten: deductionists by spanglebangle (M | Incomplete | 25/?)
Andrew Doe, rude but brilliant consulting detective, thought he had no need of a partner as he worked slowly away at dismantling the largest crime family in the country, helping out with other cases on the side to relieve the tedium. That was, until a scruffy runaway with a stupid amount of secrets stumbled into his life. Or, more accurately, broke into his kitchen.

The Foxes are a dance group working their way up from being mostly underground and found their new studio and Wymack as their producer. The Moriyamas are a powerful human trafficking syndicate and instead of Exy, they deal in dance competitions. A storm rumbled towards the team as they ran laps on the lacrosse field. Wymack had proclaimed they needed to breathe real air to get all their bullshit out of their system. Allison had complained about the humidity ruining her hair before she stopped to watch the clouds trip over themselves in the sky. Renee liked to think that in another life, Allison would have been a storm chaser. She was staring at the sky in awe while Renee stared at her. Andrew cleared his throat loudly. Neil nudged him softly then silently assured her that she should continue on - that the vulnerability was a good thing. Nicky rambled on to no one in particular about how one time when he was in Germany with Eric… Kevin slid his phone out of his pocket and took a picture of the clouds so he could look up exactly what kind they were when they returned to the dorms. Aaron grumbled about how stupid running laps outdoors was. Dan barked at them to get a move on - that they wouldn’t stop unless there was lightning. Matt immediately picked up his pace with Allison following behind him. Renee shook herself out of her thoughts. Allison was her best friend and nothing more. Andrew needed to stop acting like her saying that was such a joke.

Jean convinced himself a long time ago that he doesn't have a soulmate. Or maybe he just wants to believe that. Things would be easier if he was destined to be alone. It will at least hurt less when he inevitably winds up that way anyway.
And then there's Jeremy, who's been dreaming of meeting his match for years. For some reason, Jeremy seems determined to convince Jean that sometimes he might actually be able to have the things he hopes for, and that soulmate or no, Jean Moreau has people who will stick with him.
Two Bros Five Feet Apart by Leahelisabeth (fortheloveofcamelot) (M | 27,220 | 9/9)
Jeremy sniffed as he looked at his computer screen and the email he had just opened up. Every colourful picture and excited blurb just another stab to his tattered heart. And there at the bottom, the biggest blow of all, “non-refundable.”
He sighed and slammed his laptop shut, not caring that his rough treatment could damage it. Right now, he wanted to damage something. A significant portion of his savings had gone into these tickets and now he had nothing to show for it, no girlfriend, no awesome vacation, and absolutely zero chill.

Kevin’s hard and commanding tone was no surprise. The softness had been beaten out of him around the same time as Jean.
“What if I don’t want to anymore?”
Maybe it was because he had been half hidden in shadows-Jean had kept the shades drawn, but light still seeped in the cracks- but Jean thought he had seen something akin to understanding paint Kevin’s cool expression. “He’s gone. Quick question sorry if this has been asked before: do you know any Johnlock fanfic where they’re extremely sensual? Like not just making love but just super methodically drawn out and slow and sweet?
Hi Nonny!!
Ahh, because of this ask, I went through my bookmarks to see if I have any listed with “sensuality” so that’s what this list is!! It definitely doesn’t have all of my fics because I have to go back through them and tag them, but in the meantime, enjoy what I started tagging a few months ago when you sent me this ask, LOL <3
As always, add your own fics here, Lovelies!!

He protects me with all he can without question, and this loyalty is surely more than I deserve. Or: Sherlock is counting his blessings.
Permanent Fixture by vitruvianwatson (E, 18,836 w., 9 Ch. || Post-S4, Parentlock, Slow Build, Friends to Lovers, They’re Good Parents, Blushing Sherlock, First Kiss/Time, Explicit Consent, Sexual Content, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Mutual Pining, Big Feelings, Crying, First Kiss, Fluff, Anxious Sherlock, Inexperienced Sherlock, Emotional Communication, Love Confessions) – Now, as Rosie sat curled up against Sherlock’s side, John watched and wondered exactly how he had ended up here. Domesticity had never suited him before, not at any point in his life. His disastrous marriage had been proof of that. But somehow, here in the warmth and safety of 221B Baker Street, here with Sherlock Holmes reading medical jargon to his daughter, Sherlock’s bony feet nudging against his leg, John couldn’t imagine anyplace that would make him happier.

BTHB - Insomnia
Bad Thing Happen Bingo - Square 17 Square - Insomnia Fandom - RDJ Sherlock Character - John Watson Ship - Johnlock Requested By - @stacee-not-jaxx
The sound was starting to drive Sherlock crazy. The dull rhythmic tread of John’s slippered feet pacing from one end of his room to the other. There were twelve steps, a shuffling sound as he turned on his heel, another twelve steps, and then a second shuffling sound as the whole sordid process began again. He’d been at it for hours, and Holmes had hoped he’d wear himself out without any intervention on his part. Usually he’d have proffered up a suggestion by now, but John was being quiet, so presumably he didn’t want to disturb Sherlock. That idea was given a bit more substance as Watson struck his foot against something in the dark and swore under his breath, seething in almost silence.
John’s legs were aching. Not that he noticed, but still, they were aching. He didn’t have any idea how long he’d been pacing; only that it hadn’t been long enough. Part of him wanted to run. To burst open his bedroom door and disappear into the streets. To sprint all the way from Baker Street to Cavendish Square Gardens. To leave Marylebone entirely and lose himself in the heart of Belgravia. He’d done that, on a few occasions when him and Holmes had first met. Unable to sleep, he’d wandered the streets until he’d worn himself out. Holmes had banned him from doing such a thing again after Lestrade had found him curled underneath a tree in Hyde Park when the temperature was well below freezing. So, unable to outrun his demons, Watson was left with only one choice; outwalk them instead. And that was what he’d been doing. Pacing. Keeping one step ahead. If he slowed for a minute; for even a second, they’d be on him.
Sherlock sat with his back against the wall, listening intently. The pacing was growing faster, and the steps shorter. He’d wait, leave it a few minutes, see if he’d settle down on his own. If there was one thing about John that Sherlock knew by now, it was that he didn’t take kindly to being coddled. He’d accept help if he’d asked for it, or when he knew it was necessary, but he’d much rather struggle on his own than have anybody watch him struggle - particularly if it was Sherlock. Holmes had long since abandoned the idea of trying to convince John that he wasn’t required to prove himself; the soldier had gotten it into his head that he needed to convince Sherlock of his worth, and that’s what he’d done.
John stopped abruptly in the middle of his bedroom. The four walls surrounding him suddenly seemed far too small. Seemed like they were closing in on him, creeping to clasp him in their carpeted clutches. They wrapped him up in their wallpapered welcome, weaving and whistling through his wandering mind. He couldn’t breathe. The air was too thick, the room too warm. His thoughts thundered and thumped, rattling inside his brain, reacting reality with irrationality and reverberating off each usually relaxed response to his own emotional turmoil. He had to get out of here, Holmes’s requests be damned. He couldn’t sit and stew in his own silence any longer; he’d go mad if he so much as tried to suppress his musings. The best thing to do was to run rampant, and let them do the same. He had a choice to make. He made it.
Sherlock felt somewhat satisfied when Watson’s footsteps came to a stop of their own volition. There was a few seconds of shuffling and clattering, and the familiar scrape of a window being opened, but he wasn’t paying particular attention to that. Silence descended over 221B Baker Street, and for a while that was enough to convince Sherlock that all was business as usual. It only took a few minutes for it to dawn on him that things were perhaps a little too quiet. There was no Watson grumbling under his breath as he repeatedly nudged Gladstone towards the foot of the bed only for the loyal dog to set himself back down by his master a few seconds later. There was no sound of pages in a book turning or the scratching of a pen as Watson noted down the days events, no scraping of a key in a pocket watch. Nothing. The silence that had once seemed calm now felt uneasy, and Holmes decided it’d be in his best interests to at least check up on Watson.
The bedroom door swung open with no resistance, and Holmes was left surveying a Watson-less room. Gladstone asleep on the doctor’s pillow, the curtain blowing in the breeze from the open window, Watson’s coat missing but his shoes where they always were, and his walking cane propped against the dresser in the farthest corner. Holmes crossed the room and slammed down the window sash, resting his forehead against the cool pane of glass and looking out across the dimly lit street, knowing Watson would be well away by now. He’d have to send a telegram to the Yard if he hadn’t reappeared by morning; goodness only knows how far away he could be by the time the sun rose.
“Damn it, John.”

Music Fics
In celebration of 1,500 followers (THANK YOU!), here is a list of fic recs in which music plays an important role.
A Very Sherlock Musical by flawedamythyst (11K, Teen, Johnlock) So, you know how musicals are set in a world where people just burst into song every five minutes, and everyone around them automatically knows to join in with the tune and choreography? This fic is set in that world.John finds it extremely frustrating that Sherlock won't sing their theme song with him.
Back to the Start by slashscribe (14K, Mature, Johnlock) Sherlock hasn't played the violin since John's wedding (which is long since over), and when John returns to 221B, Sherlock relearns the violin as he and John relearn each other. Post S3 fic with an obscene amount of pining, idiocy, and attempts to pawn off tea duties.
Bel Canto by bendingsignpost (127K, Teen, Johnlock, Adlock, Irene/Kate) After years of waiting for wealthy patrons to faint, Dr John Watson discovers a far more interesting patient in the opera house basement. (AU through a Phantom of the Opera lens.)
Music for John by ampersand_ch (25K, Explicit, Johnlock) Sherlock can't sleep and seeks comfort in his violin. And as he spends night after night immersed in music, it becomes clear to him what's causing his insomnia.
Nucleus by ampersand_ch (39K, Explicit, Johnlock) Sherlock attends therapy sessions with Ella to work through his family history. In doing so, he stumbles upon another issue that's been buried deep down inside him.
On the Rack by 7PercentSolution, J_Baillier (286K, Explicit, Johnlock) The sequel to The Breaking Wheel, in which Sherlock goes to rehab (of the other sort), starts scraping his life back together, attempts to solve a case, and tries to make sense of what it actually means to be in a relationship.
Penumbra by Saki101 (46K, Explicit, Johnlock) A gothic AU of the Sherlock universe inspired by the universe of Dark Shadows (the television series), presented in four episodes*, and written for the Miniseries March Challenge at Fall TV Season Sherlock. Preview: In Maine, there was Collinwood and the three centuries of history that were woven into its walls. In London, there is Holmeswood Manor (or the Manor on Baker Street as the urban legends have it), tucked now into a city street when once its oak woods rolled from the heath to the river. John’s grown up with its stories of ghosts and wizards and things that hunt in the night. They are certainly not going to keep him from interviewing for a residential post at the Manor because he cannot afford London on an army pension and there could not possibly be any truth to the tales.
Pull the Stars from the Sky by roane (67K, Explicit, Johnlock) It’s the fall of 2000, and to help him out after his military career has ended due to injury, John Watson’s sister Harriet gets him a job as US tour manager for rising star of the industrial scene and enfant terrible, Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock’s not long out of rehab and there are plenty of doubts as to whether he’s serious about recovery. Plus, the music industry is shaking in its boots over the Napster mess. All John has to do is keep the money coming in and make sure his star doesn't screw things up. After the army, that should be easy, right?
Sonatina in G Minor by SilentAuror (22K, Explicit, Johnlock) John has come back to Baker Street, but Sherlock doesn't understand the strange tension between them, even after he begins teaching John to play the violin at John's request..
The Adventure of the Tattooed Doctor by lestradesexwife (11K, Explicit, Johnlock) John partially subsidized university by working as a tattoo artist. Something he successfully kept from Sherlock until after their trip to Buckingham Palace.
The Baker Street Nativity by SwissMiss (99K, Explicit, Johnlock) Fusion between Sherlock (BBC) and Nativity! (2009 movie starring Martin Freeman). Sherlock is a primary school teacher and John is assigned to be his classroom assistant. Together, they are charged with putting on the school's Nativity play. What could possibly go wrong?
The Ground Beneath Your Feet by Chryse (68K, Explicit, Johnlock) Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.
The Missing Piece by suitesamba (35K, Mature, Johnlock, Warstan, Mystrade) After Sherlock’s suicide, John struggles to understand exactly what Sherlock was to him, and why he is mourning so deeply and wholly. He accepts help from an unwanted source, and in time is able to reconcile his feelings and move on to love again - just in time for Sherlock to reappear, awakening in John all the old feelings, but this time, the missing piece of the puzzle as well, the one he’d been unconsciously suppressing before the fall. To complicate matters, he’s got a relationship that’s actually working, a wedding to plan, a bright future ahead of him rather like the one he dreamed of before Afghanistan. Before Sherlock. John has learned a lot about love in the years Sherlock’s been gone. The question is - how much has Sherlock learned?
The Strings That Bind by BakerTumblings (20K, Explicit, Johnlock, past John/Eurus) So what if John and Eurus had managed a hook-up somewhere off screen in Season 4?
Thirteen Dances (Or, The Doctor Dances) by Knackorcraft (17K, Explicit, Johnlock and Mollstrade) Written in response to this kink meme prompt: "John is a great dancer: we're talking all types. Not only is he able to pop and lock it, he's got some great ballet technique. He was best at lifting / holding girls."Thirteen chapters, thirteen dances, interwoven in two parallel tracks: John's past and his present. And maybe his future, too. (I do love a happy ending with a bit of smut.)

The Antagonistic Forces Of Johnlock
I was actually in the middle of writing another post when I realised there is a beautiful logic to the villains of Sherlock.
It’s not a new concept that Sherlock’s villains serve as mirrors for our main characters, and I love when I find good meta on this. But there is a pattern to these mirrors, that I think we have not talked about - and this is where it gets beautiful:
Each and every villain is designed to represent one of either John or Sherlock’s weaknesses. Weaknesses that either drive the two apart, or bring them closer to reaching one very specific common goal: love.
And there is a very simple way of telling which villain belongs to which category...
Sherlock And John’s Narrative Goals
In order to truly understand the antagonists of Sherlock, we must first have a look at what the show is actually about. Lesson one of story telling: protagonists usually have an extrinsic goal that moves a story forward, and a stronger, intrinsic goal that tends to get bullied in the pursuit of the extrinsic one. This absolutely holds true for Sherlock as well:
Sherlock’s extrinsic goal: catching criminals. Sherlock’s intrinsic goal: love.
John’s extrinsic goal: making a contribution to society. John’s intrinsic goal: also love.
Sherlock neglects his emotions and desires in order to be the very best consulting detective. But the underlying motivator for his actions is always the need to protect those he does love.
John being a man of ranks and uniforms, a man that is eager to please and to serve, he fears the social rejection that might come with admitting to his innermost desires, and he deeply struggles to emotionally connect with the people he loves (*cough* Sherlock).
Both Sherlock’s drug addiction and John’s hunger for thrill are symptomatic for how much they deprive themselves of what they actually need.
Antagonistic Forces
So the story of Sherlock really is a quest for love. And the villains, in addition to being their brilliant villain selves, represent the antagonistic forces on that quest. Take Magnussen for instance: His weapon of choice being public denunciation, Magnussen represents fear of exposure and rejection, which is John’s biggest impediment.
And so it makes sense that it is John who falls victim to Magnussen right from the start. John gets burnt alive, John gets flicked in the face, and it is John’s wife who is threatened to be exposed. Interestingly though, it is Sherlock who flat out destroys Magnussen in the end. Magnussen’s power over John is literally all in his head and Sherlock is having none of it.
One of Sherlock’s own demons, on the other hand, keeps reappearing in the form of Moriarty. Moriarty is often seen as Sherlock’s evil side, but I think it is more than that: The constant boredom, the indifference to pain, and his attitude towards staying alive (”so boring, isn’t it?”) make me think that Moriarty represents depression.
And just like depression, Moriarty is ridiculously hard to beat. In fact, he doesn’t really get beaten, he just eventually stops of his own accord. All Sherlock can do is to survive him, and even that he can only pull off with the help of his brother. And finally, because depression never truly fully goes away, neither does Moriarty, who remains tucked away deep down in Sherlock’s mind palace even after his death. I really, really love all of this.
There is another villain who manages to shake Sherlock to the core and that is Culverton Smith, the “cereal killer”. His highly-polished “nice-guy” image is a cruel but accurate portrait of John and his compulsion to keep up appearances.
Smith is so popular that he can literally get away with murder. Similarly, John has become so good at putting up a facade, that we tend to overlook just how harmful this must be to anyone who tries to approach him. It is no wonder that Sherlock nearly falls victim to this particular villain and starts questioning his own judgement. Culverton Smith may represent a weakness of John’s, but he is most hurtful to Sherlock.
A War We Must Lose
You may have noticed that I haven’t talked about any female villains yet. There is a reason for that - and this is where my inner geek starts weeping for joy. I mentioned at the beginning of this post that there is a pattern to the antagonists. Well, here it is: While the male villains all represent forces that drive John and Sherlock away from love, the female villains do the exact opposite.
Female villains represent the forces that draw our protagonists towards each other. And if you have ever wondered what The Abominable Bride was about, this is your answer: “The women [..] we have lied to, betrayed; the women we have ignored and disparaged” they are demanding a vote. And it truly is a war that Sherlock and John must lose.
Take the famous Irene Adler, for instance, who is widely understood as the embodiment of Sherlock’s libido. No matter how hard Sherlock claims to be above such things, she is a clear match for him and Sherlock only just about beats her - for the time being.
Or Mary, who is technically not a villain nor actually a mirror in the traditional sense. Rather she is a combination of both Sherlock and John. Clever and bad-ass like Sherlock, kind and caring like John, she is the best of both worlds and the connection between them when things become difficult. Mary represents the bond of friendship between the two.
And so it makes a lot of sense that Mary nearly kills Sherlock while at the same time she is saving his life. It is exactly what John’s friendship does to him: It nearly kills him, but it is also very much what keeps him going.
Oh, but of all those female villains, why then is Mary the one to die? If Mary represents Sherlock and John’s friendship - what in the world could possibly kill her?
The answer is: Vivian Norbury. Code word “Amo”. Latin for love. Nothing could kill the friendship of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, except actual, proper, unadulterated love. John’s love, to be precise, what with her sweater vest and the tremor in her hand.
And I adore the idea of love being a bitter old cat lady. (Seriously, Gatiss.) Quietly biding her time, never noticed, never appreciated, fatally underestimated by Sherlock Holmes, she finally has had enough. Bugger the consequences if she can make an impression on the world’s most clueless consulting detective.
Do note at which point in the narrative this happens: John is utterly dissatisfied in his marriage and he is starting to want out. Even though Mary is the perfect woman for him, it is still not enough, he wants more and catches himself mentally cheating. And at that point, that old, quiet, neglected love finally stands up for itself. John has ignored it for way too long and there are no excuses left.
Except that this is the moment his wife dies and the guilt-ridden John can no longer stand to be around Sherlock. Anyone but him (read more about this here). And this is when Mary, aka their friendship, makes one last appearance: “John Watson, get the hell on with it.”
Save My Soul. Seek My Room.
For Sherlock, too, there is one more villain, one final problem that he has to overcome: His own mind in the form of Eurus. That genius, detached, over-analysing, and brilliant thing that is locked away in a high-security facility without human affection or physical contact.
What would happen, if those walls would suddenly crumble? Who would get hurt if Sherlock’s mind were allowed to wander freely?
But as it turns out, all Eurus - and therefore Sherlock’s mind - ever wanted in the first place was to be loved. There is no struggle between Sherlock’s heart and mind - they both want the same thing: human contact and affection. A co-pilot to help fly the plane. Sherlock only has to allow himself to have it.

Mass Effect and Sherlock (Tin-hatting fandom)
After replaying the Mass Effect trilogy I’ve been looking back on all the controversy that happened after ME3 was released, in particular the ending(s).
For those unaware, Mass Effect is a space opera RPG video game series. One of its biggest appeals is how much the player’s decisions affect the story; from sacrificing one of your crew, to condemning a race to genocide, to who to romance. There are many, many variables to make each playthrough truly unique. So when Mass Effect 3 came out, the grand finale, a lot of gamers were extremely disappointed to find that the ending reflected very little on the choices you had made throughout the game.
Oh, you had a choice. But the cutscenes were all nearly exactly the same, only with a different colour filter depending on what you chose, and the offscreen implications of certain consequences. You didn’t get to see if the alliances you had formed between warring races would last or if certain characters you loved had survived. It was all left up to the player’s imagination.
Fans were really pissed off. But other than just ranting about it, some went a step further and believed the endings weren’t even real. This was not without context. An underlying theme throughout the trilogy was the idea of the enemy indoctrinating people into serving them. Fans created some brilliant theories based on supposed clues and hints they had picked up on during the game that the choice given to the player at the end, as well as the rushed images that follow, were all an indoctrinated illusion planted by the enemy - and that this was to be revealed in the promised DLC, which would give the game its “true ending”.
TL,DR; Fans of the series were pissed at the ending, among other story elements, and so came up with a clever and believable theory that it was all fake - an illusion in the main character’s head.
Sound familiar?
I don’t think Mass Effect is the first to do this. I never watched LOST, but I remember hearing some people believe that ending was fake as well, and that a secret follow-up film or spin-off would follow to reveal the truth. With LOST, that never happened, as far as I’m aware.
But with Mass Effect, it kind of did.
Not the indoctrination theory itself. The creators have always defended that was the ending intended (aside from story elements that were apparently changed after a leaked script pre-release, so the rumours go) and none of the DLC that followed changed that.
However, because fans felt so cheated by the original endings, Bioware released a free DLC that expanded greatly on the endings several months later. If it hadn’t been free then one could have accused them of intentionally baiting people to pay for a better ending. But this one, while keeping the same story, added important details to help give closure. The effect of each final choice was VASTLY more explained and shown after the decision. The allies formed, planets doomed and characters saved were actually seen - even though most of it was still images, it was better than nothing. One of the biggest questions in the original ending was seeing two characters apparently die and then reappear safe, briefly, at the final scene without explanation - the DLC added a scene in that also served as the player being able to give an emotional goodbye to their love interest/favourite team member.
That wasn’t the end of Bioware helping to give much better closure to the players, however, after we’d had so many years to bond with these characters. A final DLC came out which may as well have been titled Fanservice. Aside from one cheesy Die Hardy mission, most of it was just focused on hanging out and having a party with the charcters. Some fans dubbed it ‘the Christmas Special’ DLC, despite it not having any mention of festivities. The cheesy yet heartwarming feeling was the same, ending with a sweet goodbye almost breaking the fourth wall.
Speaking personally, in this case I was never too upset about the endings, in terms of story, at least not as much as others. The execution of the original ones was very disappointing but I was thankful for the DLC extras. There are still fans to do this day who believe in the Indoctrination theory, in spite of the DLC and the game being five years old. But I felt the story works well enough and, especially with the Citadel DLC, I’m always left with a feeling of contentment and satisfaction which I think is what I look for in all film, tv or video games, no matter how tragic or happy the endings are.
So finally I get to Sherlock and the EMP theory.
I’m hoping I’ll see the ‘cycle continue’, to use a Mass Effect phrase. The EMP theories I’ve read are just as brilliant, clever and almost crazy enough to work as the Indoctrination theories are. I hope to keep reading them. But I don’t think they will be revealed as canon. :( I think Series 4 really is what Mofftiss intended and what they thought was a good direction to go with the show. Some people really seemed to agree with them it was good. I don’t get it but...oh well. It is what it is.
But if that’s the case, the little I am hoping for is that Mofftiss, like Bioware, acknowledges the feelings of those who were deeply disappointed and recognises the possible flaws. That’s not asking them to change the whole story and especially not to force Johnlock to be canon if they honestly don’t intend it. But just be adult enough to see our point of view and not just brush it aside as ‘fan backlash’. If the most we do get in the future with Sherlock and John is a one-off Christmas special as soon as Ben and Martin can fit in the time to film, then I just hope it is something that gives me a much better sense of closure than the ending to S4 did (which just raised more questions than answers). Remind me why Sherlock and John’s friendship is supposed to be the best thing ever. Remind me why I loved this show, even if that means some fanservice.
I’m not sure if that would be enough to wash the bad taste of S4 out of my mouth. But then S3 left me with mixed feelings and TAB boosted me right back up again (perhaps too high). Anything is possible.
