Meaning is not something you stumble across, like the answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt. Meaning is something you build into your life. You build it out of your own past, out of your affections and loyalties, out of the experience of humankind as it is passed on to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the things and people you love, out of the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something. The ingredients are there. You are the only one who can put them together into that unique pattern that will be your life. Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you. If it does, then the particular balance of success or failure is of less account.

The first quality of good storytelling is storytelling. A profound theme is of trifling importance if the characters knocked around by it are uninteresting, and brilliant technique is a nuisance if it pointlessly prevents us from seeing the characters and what they do. You are trying to create a vivid and continuous dream in the reader's mind and that dream is broken by bad technique.

Now that we are out of “functional” #ianfleming original #jamesbond titles, I’m surprised that Hollywood still has been reluctant to take any cues from #johngardner #007 run of the 80’s (or the YA books come to that, JK). While #Roleofhonor & #icebreaker have a nice ring to them, I’m glad they went with #skyfall over #coldfall & #licensetokill over Gardner’s “License Renewed” while “For Special Services” & “Never Send Flowers” sound like Bond has retired to run an Escort or floral Service (Hollywood you can have that one for free). Seriously we still have: -Win, Lose or Die -Brokenclaw -Scorpius -Nobody Lives Forever https://www.instagram.com/p/CA-6HmdpH-u/?igshid=1ro9cswz7cjiu

A look inside John Gardner's translations of the Gawain Poet's works. Forgot I had picked this up many moons ago. Bleached spine and tacky orange 70s era cover, but very nicely laid out inside, with tastefully placed illustrations. #johngardner #translations #epicpoetry #middleenglish #middleenglishpoetry #sirgawain #sirgawainandthegreenknight #pearl #pearlpoem #pearlpoet #purity #patience #alliteration #alliterativepoetry #alliterativemeter #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #medieval #medievalliterature (at Franklin, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs7V2jkgADK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hzvzkv6xyfyr

Dragon, Dragon by John Gardner (a retelling attempt)
The story took place in a kingdom plagued by a destructive dragon. The king was helplessly in search of a hero who could defeat the mighty monster.
Unfortunately, all of his knights were too terrified to fight while his trusted wizard, due to old age, had forgotten the spells that could silence the creature. He actually could've faced the dragon if only he did not lose his book of spells years ago. As a result, the whole kingdom was in chaos every time the monster decided to attack. Peace and order was simply nowhere to be found. Finally, the troubled King decided to call all his constituents, least expecting the cobbler's family to attend, for a meeting.
He brought up their kingdom's problem promising to reward anyone who could slay the dragon with the princess's hand and reign over half of the kingdom. Unlike the cobbler's bold disapproval, the oldest of his three sons decided to take the challenge with soaring confidence.
He was actually famous in the kingdom for being a Math Whiz but there was no known battle skill nor experience this genius had. Anyhow, he took the course heeding an advice from his father, which he had no intention of following, before he left. The cobbler advice nothing but to firmly utter this chant in front of the Dragon, "Dragon, dragon, how do you do? I've come from the king to murder you." Instead of following his father, the son decided to set up a disguise to trick the monster. Eventually, this trick did not work and he ended up being eaten by the Dragon. He wept inside its tummy.
Following this, the middle son of the cobbler took the same course. He was a strong muscular man who decided to attack the Dragon by surprise. Like his brother, the Dragon outsmarted him. He also regretted not following their father's advice as he joined his brother inside the dragon's tummy.
Lastly, the youngest son of the cobbler decided to take the quest. He was a terrified young man but was known to be loyal and respectful to his elders. Unlike his brothers, he took his father's advice as he faced the Dragon. Upon hearing the poetic chant, the creature laughed so hard it fell on the ground. The youngest son felt so insulted he tried to lift his borrowed sword to attack but its weight was heavier than him that it dropped on its own. Luckily, it fell on the Dragon's neck cutting its throat. He had killed the monster!
He freed his brothers before they gathered the treasures. In the end, they went back to the King with the Dragon's head and treasures including the aged wizard's long lost book of spells.
***
Dragon, dragon is a charming story. I couldn't help but remember 'Ibong Adarna', a 15th century Filipino epic, upon turning the pages. It is the kind of simple fantasy that could capture readers because of its smoothly written narration and humor.
