@housewithaclock is the kind of movie that takes me back to the days of elementary school, when Halloween was the biggest deal of the year. I remember trying to read the book when I was in 4th grade, but it was too scary for little old me. Once I heard a movie was being made, I was reminded about the book and got excited. To be fair, I was taken back to see Eli Roth directing it and Jack Black starring, but I still couldn’t wait. I have watched the movie and am finishing the book and to be honest they’re not that different. The book is creepy, but it’s meant for young readers and the movie deals with intense subjects, but it just adds a little bit more comedy. Jack Black and Cate Blanchett are a perfect as Johnathan Barnavelt and Ms. Zimmerman and Owen Vaccaro’s performance as Lewis is outstanding. I felt for this kid, who lost his parents, is living with someone he’s basically never met, and now has to face an evil that will end the whole world, pretty extreme. By the end, he’s able to find his strength and realize all the marvelous things that he’s capable of. This is not jus a great Halloween movie but just a great fall movie. Like I said, it takes you back to when a specific time when the little things of the fall season were so exciting. The decorations, the costumes, the school parades, even the autumn book fairs. It’s the right kind of fun and the right kind of spooky for all to enjoy this Halloween season. Un poderoso hechicero deja un elemento misterioso y oculto en un lugar impregnado por la magia con el objetivo de exterminar a la humanidad. Solo un niño huérfano, que comienza a lidiar con esa fuerza mística, será capaz de intentar ponerle un freno antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

No estamos hablando del argumento de “Harry Potter y la cámara secreta“ sino de otra película basada en un libro homónimo de John Bellairs. Lewis, el pequeño protagonista (Owen Vaccaro) va a vivir a la mansión junto a su tío Jonathan Barnavelt (Jack Black) y a su amiga Florence (Cate Blanchett) tras perder a sus padres de forma tan repentina como el cambio de vida que está a punto de afrontar. El cual incluye, por supuesto, nuevo barrio, nueva escuela, nuevo compañeros y nuevos intentos por encajar, aunque eso signifique buscar la aceptación y compañía de popular Tarby Corrigan (Sunny Suljic).

Today's October 12th Day Seven task for the #deweyoct #Readathon countdown photo challenge from @deweysreadathon is to share a #ScaryCover. Have you seen this edition of The House With a Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs? This image is why I dragged my feet on reading it after dark fell on my first day. 😨 . . . . But as it turned out, there wasn't a skull or anything really that appeared when Lewis resurrected Selenna Izard, or even anywhere in the book. And the clock in the walls? Well, I won't spoil the story, but it wasn't as terrifying as I feared. 😕 . . . . I gave this book four stars, though, because I really enjoyed it, even if it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. The early tension I felt was great!
