A long series of patches of floating sargassum, a type of seaweed, has begun impacting heavily on beaches in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and adjacent parts of the Atlantic. 

Sargassum occurs naturally and generally isn’t harmful; it actually creates thriving ecosystems at sea. But it’s a major nuisance on beaches. With spring break in progress, it comes at a terrible time for tourism. Perhaps Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will start telling Floridians, “Don’t say sargassum!”.

When sargassum decays on beaches it can give off hydrogen sulfide – the “rotten egg gas” which also happens to be a greenhouse gas.

For centuries, sargassum has been found in great amounts in an oval stretch of the Atlantic known as the Sargasso Sea. This new belt of sargassum is further south and only became apparent about a dozen years ago.

The origins of this new sargassum belt are not clear. But nutrients entering the Atlantic due to increased deforestation of the Amazon are suspect. And the warming of the Atlantic due to climate change can’t be helping things.

Despite giving off greenhouse gas when it decays on land, it is believed that sinking the newer geographic formations of sargassum out to sea sea when it is far from the coast may actually reduce CO2 in the atmosphere for decades. 

^^^ the “New Sargasso Sea” on that map is shown when it is at a relatively normal size. It has been reaching further west and north in 2023.
