I've been deeply delving into Supernatural at the moment and I just put something together that I felt should be out in the interwebs.
Dean Winchester and his layers
Obviously we have the stuff everyone already knows right? He likes pie, he has anger issues, he feels overprotective of Sam. But Dean is actually incredibly intelligent yet downplays it for Sam (nothing against Sam cuz I love that man too) and everyone else, some examples of that: He made his own emf reader out of a cassette player and electromagnet from a microwave, he hacked/disarmed a museums security alarm, referenced Vonnegut; Homer; Lord of the Flies and Tolkien, watched and loved Star Trek, he plays dress up/cosplays/larps, etc. Dean was also the one who cared about holidays, trying so hard to give them to little Sammy, and being hurt when adult Sam wanted none of it. Dean had to take on the role of mom and dad for Sam his entire life, even going hungry so his little boy didn’t. He's an amazing cook, has crazy good mechanical skills, loves anything to do with music- karaoke, guitars on his wall, cassette to Cas- and Dean even had a career picked out which had nothing to do with hunting… he wanted to be a firefighter. Dean even took a teaching role as PE teacher in one episode when he could've picked anything else, that just builds a better image of the caring man Dean raised himself to be. Not to mention the fact that when Sam was in the cage with Lucifer Dean GOT OUT!! He wanted that apple pie life, the life he pushed Sam into his whole life because he knew only one of them would get that chance… and of course he'd want it to be his brother/son.
He grew up to hide his wants and dreams in order to please the man who only wanted a soldier, Dean even went so far as seeing his own life as less than Sam and pushing to die instead of the brother he took care of alone. Dean gained food insecurity, he never knew when he would get to eat and we see this throughout the show as he shoves any free food into his mouth like he'll never eat again. He also showed signs of CPTSD, a mental health condition that can develop if you experience chronic (long-term) trauma.
It involves stress responses, such as: Anxiety (maybe like how got scared and he immediately apologized after not shooting John, and then knew it wasn’t his father because the demon wasn’t upset), Having flashbacks or nightmares (post hell is the first thing that comes to mind), Avoiding situations (trying to keep the peace between Sam and John), places and other things related to the traumatic event (avoiding Lawrence KS for decades), Heightened emotional responses, such as impulsivity or aggressiveness (he gets really upset in difficult conversations first and then the other emotions come later), Persistent difficulties in sustaining relationships (come on, Dean is a ladies man).
Examples of chronic trauma include: Long-term child physical or sexual abuse (tell me that John didn’t physically abuse or "discipline" his boys), Long-term domestic violence (again.. Physical abuse by John), Being a victim of human or sex trafficking (not canon… but it could have happened in all the years his father neglected them and fucked off to fight the monsters while his own kids struggled to get by), War (hunter and monsters are at war), Frequent community violence (hunters and monsters alike can be POS). While CPTSD is often associated with chronic trauma in childhood, adults who experience chronic trauma can also develop the condition (which means it only gets worse for Dean as he gets older and doesn't get help for it).
So yeah. Dean deserved better than a piece of rebar at the ass end of Supernatural, that’s all..

Thinking about the differences between how Dean raised Sam and how he handled Jack being born and how much John Winchester is at the heart of that difference. Dean believes that John raised Sam, and always saw John in the father position (since it was technically true), and so he focused on taking care of Sam, providing for him and keeping him safe—all the things that made him far more of a father to Sam than John ever was. But in filling the role of father for Jack, Dean falls back on the example he had, which is John’s parenting, not recognizing that he already knows how to be a good father because he already had to be one.
Additionally, I think that’s why Sam does a little better with Jack (not that he was perfect, especially at the beginning when he was trying to use Jack to get Mary back): because his example of a good father figure is Dean, who provided for him and taught him to survive.

as much as i hate hate hate john, i can say that when the boys were still really little, like right after the fire, he y’know. tried. shittily but still. and like i’m just thinking abt the leather jacket rn and how dean definitely formed some attachments to it as a child that carried on into his adulthood. how many nights was that jacket the one source of warmth and comfort ? nights when they had to sleep in the backseat of the impala and john draped that jacket over them. the few memories dean has of john hugging or holding him and dean clinging to his jacket. and later he tries to find the ghost of his father in the shape of that jacket. he wears it and seeks something, some scrap of warmth, some fleeting memory of being cared for. and it’s not enough, it’ll never be enough, and he deserved more, and he’s swimming in the jacket, he’ll never fill it out properly, but it’s all he has so it’ll have to do

This is how bad I am at Tumblr/out of practice: I reblogged John Winchester hate into my larger Sam community blog. WHOOPS.
But it's no secret how I feel about that man and it's on nearly every episode of of our Sam Podcast.
I will say that what is frustrating for me to see in this arena of the fandom is people still creating a dichotomy of "a complex character vs an abusive character." This is not an either or thing, you guys. John Winchester can be an abusive, neglectful father AND a complex character.
Abuser often ARE complex becuase often they abuse those they love the most. Saying he's complex isn't a defense against his abusive actions. It's just part of them.

I’ve seen a few posts about this already but it’s so wild to me that in S1 like right off the bat Dean is like “Sam, our dad is missing, he could be hurt or dead or something!!! We need to find him and save him. You’re my only hope.” and Sam is like “Dean we’re all barely holding onto our sanity by a thread. Dad is sending us on a wild goose chase and he’s not missing, he’s just a deadbeat.” and Dean is just like “yea but you don’t know him like I do. We need to do this for him.” and then they make up for like 2 days and go kill a monster and one or both of them gets injured and almost dies and then they do the exact same thing all over again while John is in the background munching on popcorn and sipping martinis while watching them breakdown and lose hope and almost die. And then when he finally shows up he hugs them and he’s like “welp I gotta go die now boys, good luck with figuring all this shit out!!” and then when they get upset he’s like “well yea I sent you out on a bunch of dangerous missions where you almost got killed and stuff and sure I may have ignored you when Dean was dying and I used him as bait but this time it’s personal cause this monster killed your mom so I can’t let you come with me lol.” and then he gets possessed by said monster and Dean is like “You’re not my dad!! My dad would NEVER tell me he’s proud of me!!” and then after the monster leaves his body they all get into a fucking car crash and when Dean is dying, again, he’s just like “hold up I have an idea” and hits up the monster that possessed him and killed his wife and almost killed all of them. And while Sam is screaming at him in the background to be their dad he’s all like “yo how about I give you my soul and the only we have that can defeat you in exchange for you saving Dean??” and the demon is all like “Ok bet.” And then Dean finally wakes up from his coma and his dad is like “Hey remember that time I forced you to parent Sam for your whole life and barely comforted you and let you comfort me instead. Well, that’s really my bad bro. Anyways, you either need to save your brother or kill him so bye.” And then he leaves and fucking dies. And then like 2 days later Sam is just like “yea maybe dad wasn’t that bad. I kind of miss him ngl.” and Dean just beats the shit out of the car that he cherishes.
And then somehow some of the writers still want to try to make John seem like a good father???

I'm genuinely obsessed with the show Supernatural, and since I made one about Dean already that means I needed to make this one.
Sam Winchester
He likes healthy food (rabbit food), has a fear of being seen as a freak, and idolizes Dean. Sam is irritatingly kind, often pushing Dean to do different things on a hunt than he wouldn't think of doing personally. One example of that is when this psychic kid was trying to kill his stepmom he attempted to talk him down and save him rather than kill him. He is so mentally strong it's scary at times, He has managed to overcome Famine's power and fought through Lucifer's control of his body. Sam forces Dean to look at and deal with his emotions in a way that makes him uncomfortable but makes them better afterward.
The need for revenge fueled him for years after Jess died before it turned into a genuine need to do the right thing and save others. Sam is attentive, listening to every word said to them and putting together a solid plan. He takes on the brains of the hunting, researching every creature and location when they take a case. Sam was essentially kicked out of the home by their father for choosing to get an education- which he did with the intent to be a lawyer- and pushing to gain his own life away from their father's expectations. Sam has a genuine drive to get out of hunting, as seen by the multitude of times he manages to do so. That being said Sam always came back to hunting because of his crazy codependency to Dean which gets them into the most trouble. Sam and Dean take turns dying and saving the other brother for the entirety of the show.
Sam struggles with mental health, specifically what could be seen as schizophrenia. As the show continues Sam withdraws more socially, which is another early sign of schizophrenia. Dean became Sam's main source of contact with people, and he began to drink to the point of passing out often. Sam also begins to have debilitating hallucinations of Lucifer that lead him to harm himself to "get back to reality". If we look back into season 1 we start to see the signs, the big one being suicidal tendencies (Sam believing that he should give himself over to the demons, and even later when he is willing to die to cure Dean). He even has multiple times where he falls into a delusion that he alone can do something (killing Lilith because of his demon-blood addiction, or the trials he puts himself through- to cure Dean). Another symptom is extremely disorganized behavior (Sam gets angry when his "failures" or shortcomings are put into question, this results in him storming off and leaving Dean). The struggle Sam has with his mental health is a significant challenge he faces, which shows the impact the torture and trauma he endured has on his psyche.
Sam deserved an ending that had Dean alongside him helping him be Sammy like he had been his whole life…

wait explain to me the destiel hatred i’m curious what abt it angers u that doesn’t apply to the other two ships
great question! the answer would unfortunately require 3 hours and a powerpoint presentation, so i will try to do a brief summary:
a ship sucking only ever has about 25% to do with the ship itself. destiel is bad in the sense that i think dean winchester is an annoying character that gets treated with kiddie gloves by the narrative, which makes him irritating to see on screen, because i personally dislike it when "men are angry and abusive because they just love too strongly, and don't know how to express it :(" is played straight as a character's primary internal conflict. especially over 15 seasons. it's boring, he's boring, and 35 year old men shouldn't be going to colleges trying to figure out which freshman girls are legal or not. hate him.
however the real sin of destiel, beyond the fact that dean winchester and i have beef that will only ever resolve when i get to reincarnate as the rusty nail that kills him, is that the fans are so so so fucking annoying. like yes the narrative frames dean as a golden boy who can either do no wrong, or "well, i guess he did wrong there, but what about how tortured he is :(" but good god. at least the show isn't trying to convince me that destiel is some groundbreaking lifechanging love story, complete with "omg this moment" montages where they romanticize scenes that feature dean either insulting, threatening, or humiliating cas. like this entire show (post season 5) is dean chronically either infantillizing and attempting to keep cas under his control, or holding him up as the only person he can rely on, thus giving cas expectations that are impossible to fulfill.
and don't get me wrong! people can like a shitty person and a fucked up ship. that's basically everything i enjoy on here. but at least like. acknowledge it. aldfkjalka. and if you're gonna like a shitty person and a fucked up ship, at least write about it in an interesting way. 90% of fic and posts written about destiel aren't even about destiel as presented in canon, they're about two generic men with generic personalities who suffer from the world's most generic tropey problems. cookie cutter ass basic relationship. the high school au of ships. boring.
