Fuck, fuck, fuck, oh god, the build up in this episode was fucking insane. It starts off so slow at first: Frank’s voice showing up, John and Arthur slowly turning on each other until everything just explodes. And then all the hallucinations start barreling in one after the other. The sound design was so good on this one, it scared the shit out of me. I think we heard Faroe drowning for a couple of seconds and my stomach just dropped. And you can hear John trying to reach Arthur, but his voice sounds so far away, almost like it’s underwater too. And now it sounds Arthur is stuck in this “prison pits” place and the King in Yellow is going to keep him there until he cracks. Ugh, my stomach is in knots, the tension is killing me.

do you have any favourite historical overviews or introductions to christian mysticism that you could please recommend? ilysm habibti
works marked with * are what i would recommend for absolute beginners on the topic.
introductory works:
thomas merton, a course in christian mysticism: thirteen sessions ith the famous trappist monk*
william a. richards, sacred knowledge: psychadelics and religious experiences (on the practical applications of entheogenic, or drug-induced, mysticism)
william james, the varieties of religious experience, especially lectures 16 and 17*
bernard mcginn, the essentials of christian mysticism (arguably the best starter anthology of christian mystical writing)*
mircea eliade, the sacred and the profane
robert s. ellwood, mysticism and religion*
ed. amy hollywood, the cambridge companion to christian mysticism*
steven t. katz (ed.), mysticism and sacred scripture, especially the first chapter, "mysticism and the interpretation of sacred scripture," and the second chapter, "mysticism and scriptural justification"
primary works:
anon, the cloud of unknowing and other works (a.c. sperings translation for penguin is probably the most accessible)
teresa of avila, the life of saint tereesa of avila by herself
simone weil, waiting for god*
julian of norwich, revelations of divine love*
john of the cross, spiritual canticle (i recommend this to newcomers to christian mysticism over dark night of the soul, which is extremely dense and often devastating)
meister eckhart's sermons- though the book i'm linking is essentially a primer to german mystics
hildegard of bingen's scivias; but this selected works is a good place to start
margery kempe, the book of margery kempe by herself*
bernard of clairvaux’s sermons on song of songs*
marguerite porete, the mirror of simple souls
rebecca jackson, gifts of power*
catherine of siena, dialog
secondary works:
evelyn underhill, mysticism: a study in the nature and development of spiritual consciousness
evelyn underhill, practical mysticism*
caroline walker bynum, jesus as mother: studies in the spirituality of the high middle ages
caroline walker bynum, wonderful blood: theology and practice in late medieval northern germany and beyond
caroline walker bynum, holy feast and holy fast: the religious significance of food to medieval women*
grace m. jantzen, "eros and the abyss: reading medieval mystics in postmodernity"
grace m. jantzen, becoming divine: towards a feminist philosophy of religion
denys turner, the darkness of god: negativity in christian mysticism
jeffrey kripal, roads of excess palaces of wisdom: eroticism and reflexivity in the study of mysticism (+a lecture by him)
marsha aileen hewitt, freud on religion*
sarah clairmont, "she'll eat him up she loves him so" (one of my all time favourite papers)
also, the bible: which is probably the most vital of works on christian mysticism, as nothing you read about mysticism will not be influenced by it. i personally have recently been reading a combination of the JPS tanakh and the jewish annotated new testament, but the new revised standard edition (+apocrypha) is generally standard. if you are reading the bible academically for learning about mysticism, or have absolutely no background with reading the bible, i recommend the following books specifically:
the torah (genesis*, exodus*, leviticus, numbers, deuteronomy*)
the major prophets isaiah* and ezekiel*
the minor prophets (all of which constitute my favourite part of the bible) joel*, jonah*, micah*, malachai*
psalms*, job*, the song of songs*
the gospels, especially mark* and john (mark is the oldest and most "jewish," john is the most recent and most "gentile"; matthew and luke are probably more familiar than both)
the epistles: james*, jude*, 1-3 john, 1-2 peter, hebrews
the revelation to john
everything i've recommended here you can find online (internet archive or annasarchive); i've also tried to keep it extremely general and limited to work that i've personally read and vetted. if there's specific aspects or topics you're interested in (ie women's mysticism, medieval mysticism, mysticism and eating, freud and mysticism, commentaries on specific mystics etc) just drop me an ask! very honoured you've asked me beloved <3

I adore (1) Charlie Dowd. I believe that Charlie should be surrounded by pretty men and women and be loved and everything. Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of sad thoughts about Charlie's place in a relationship. Let me explain:
1.) Noel Finley - Call it an awakening for both of them. Charlie's first love though neither of them knew what to do with said feelings. They become police partners and are thick as thieves. They both end up getting drafted in The Great War and I am one to believe that the two of them were able to get a single picture of themselves away from everyone else while they were there. It's the only thing that Charlie has of them, and he carries the picture in his breast pocket. A bud snipped before it even had a chance to bloom.
2.) Roland and Delphine Cummings - This is a ship I was turned onto by @creekschaoscorner (thanks a lot for the brainrot, Graham /j). He and Roland connected fast. And throughout working together, they became closer and closer. Roland was already married and had a ten-year-old daughter. Charlie was reasonably nervous about playing around with Roland after hours but couldn't help the love that he felt for him. Delphine's no idiot though. She can see the affection in his husband's warm, dark eyes every time he looks at his partner. It's a look she knows well. She's the only that actually wrangles the two into a proper relationship and what a powerhouse they are. Charlie becomes another father figure to Amanda and cares for her like she's his own. However, there was a still nagging thought in the back of his mind that he would never ever have the security in that relationship that Roland and Delphine had. Leaving for Egypt is one of the toughest things he did, though he didn't anticipate that to be the last time he would say goodbye to them. His girlfriend's body in a freezer. His boyfriend's soul later ripped apart in front of his own eyes because he couldn't convince the King in Yellow he wasn't lying. And his surrogate daughter leaving his letters unanswered. He had lost everything again.
3.) Frank Underhill - Now this is a rarepair for sure that I don't admittedly have much for but was inspired by the Malevolent commentary in which there was a possibility for Frank to have helped Arthur in the Dreamlands and possibly into Season Three, filling that sort of "guide" role that Charlie does in Season Four. Additionally, we are unsure of how much time Frank spent in the Dreamlands so it's certainly possible that the two were in the Dreamlands together (despite the possibility of the two of them actually meeting being slim to none). In my mind, Charlie was able to get out of the grasp of the King in Yellow and stumbled across Frank in his attempt to escape. The two of them teamed up and assisted each other in their mutual goals. They spent months together, trying to survive the Dreamlands and exploring the vast expanse of it all. I don't know if we have a concrete canon depiction of the cause of Frank's death, but I do think that Charlie was there to witness it. Probably one of those self-sacrificial acts so that Charlie could have a chance of getting out. It's something that still haunts him.
4.) Dennis Collins (The Butcher) - I have two different takes on this. One, is the canon storyline in which Butcher gets his head exploded and another where he lives. In both cases, Dollins gives me a very very intimate and close friends with benefits vibe. It's playful and flirty but also deeply caring without there being the stress about labels or commitments. In the canon storyline, it is very similar to Noel in which they don't even have the chance for something to blossom. In the living storyline, Charlie wishes for something a little more after a while, but Dennis is far too nomadic in his living and job that he doesn't wish to "settle down" so to speak. So, they compromise as much as they can.
5.) Ourthur (Arthur/John/Oscar) - Charlie loves these three more than life. I always see this ship as Oscar and Charlie (Holy Ghosts) getting together first and then John and Arthur (Jarthur) join in later. I think Charlie is actually the one to recommend the relationship since he has experience with it (*motions to Roland and Delphine*) which makes this prospect even more painful. Between the three of them, Charlie is generally the one to compromise on his own romantic wants for the others. Arthur or John have intruded on his moments with one of the others multiple times and simply will give in for the others' happiness. He's not the first one that many of them come to for physical affections despite him being quite fond of it. But he loves them so much, nonetheless.
So, what trend do we see here? There's two the pop out in my mind. The first is the fact that Charlie feels an immense guilt and responsibility for the deaths of his previous partners. There's a part of him that feels as though their ties to him is what caused their deaths even though he couldn't do anything about them. There's a hesitance in him getting into other relationships because of this fear that he's going to end up killing them too. Secondly, is the idea that Charlie feels like he consistently is second in a relationship. He doesn't have the stability that Roland and Delphine have, he knows that Dennis is going to prioritize himself over Charlie, and he's generally not the first one thought of in the Ourthur relationship. It's something that pains him but maybe it's for the best as it may be the only thing keeping them alive. At least in his mind.
Enjoy the Charlie angst! Kisses <3

Chinese Historical Periods: Bronze Age to the Development of Writing
Tumblr media
By Guss - Own work, after Li Liu, Archaeology in China, p.214, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=32701410
The Bronze Age Started around 3100 BCE in China and can be divided into three main periods: early, middle, and late. Some scholars prefer to divide the period between the Shang (about 1600-1046 BCE) and Zhou (11046-256 BCE) dynasties and the Warring States Period (476-221 BCE) into four parts, almost poetically called the heyday, the decadence, the mid-emergence, and the decline.
Tumblr media
By Prof. Gary Lee Todd - [1], CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=31469658
The earliest culture that created bronze artifacts that we've found is the Majiayao culture near Gansu, which is near the upper Yellow River. The object found was a knife. From Majiayao, bronze working spread along the Yellow River through contact between cultures. It is also thought that domesticated animals may have entered China through this area, also called the Hexi Corridor, or possibly through the Mongolian plateau around 3500 BCE, so it's quite possible that there was communication between Eastern and Western Asia through this passage.
Tumblr media

The next major culture was the Erlitou culture, which was also focused around the Yellow River valley from about 1750-1530 BCE. They are considered to be the first true Bronze Age culture, being fully within it, and spread through hundreds of sites. Within this culture, the Xia dynasty ruled from about 2070 BCE through 1600 BCE, the first dynasty in Chinese history that we know about. Until 1959 CE, there weren't any sites discovered that were directly related to the Xia dynasty or a way of differentiating them from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. With improved technology, it became possible to separate out artifacts from the dynasties and establish the historicity of the Xia dynasty.

The final part of prehistoric Bronze Age was under the Shang dynasty. The center of the late Shang dynasty was around Xiaotun Village in modern day Henan. During this time, oracle bones scripts, usually carved on shoulder blades of oxen, began to appear, the earliest form of written Chinese that began to appear around 1250 BCE. There are 150,000 known pieces of oracle bones with about 5,000 different characters, of which 1,700 are recognizable to modern readers of Chinese. There is also a rich array of pottery, bronze ceremonial objects, carved jade, and many stone and bone tools, letting us develop a fuller picture of how people lived and what they valued during this time.
Tumblr media
By Kanguole - Own workdesign based on Chang, Kwang-chih (1986) The Archaeology of Ancient China, p. 319 ISBN: 0-300-03784-8.rivers from Natural Earth 1:10mErlitou sites from Xu, Hong (2013) "The Erlitou Culture" Underhill, Anne P. , ed. , John Wiley & Sons, pp. 300–322 ISBN: 978-1-118-32578-0. p. 302, Figure 15.1.Xia capitals from Tan, Qixiang , ed. Much work has been done to reconcile the received or traditional history with the archaeological record by a group called the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project. With the large gap between the Xia dynasty and the beginning of the use of oracle bones, there are schools of thought that doubt its existence, considering it only legendary. Using the best tools available, they're working on narrowing the range of artifacts to identify when they were made. Certain sites are identified with each dynasty as well as certain types of artifacts. By being able to tighten the dates that items found at the various sites, the project has been able to date the currently known sites and identified gaps in the cultural record (cultural transitions between dynasties and predominant technologies).

Mary I's Fight For The Throne
19th July - Mary organises her army
After hearing of the Earl of Oxford's defection, Mary sends him a letter of thanks, with a commission to "make provisions for six days victualing and come through with a speed." 1 She also orders six days worth of food from Great Yarmouth 2, and 300 quarters of malt to be brewed in Ipswich 3.
Due to lack of money she cannot afford to pay all the wages for soldiers in her growing army, but orders "where captains in every band shall perceive any soldier lacking money, his captain shall relieve him with so much as his discretion shall think good, but in such sort that it appears not otherwise but to be of his own liberality." 4
Her army is slowly growing more disciplined under the instruction of the Earl of Sussex, but they need more bows and arrows. Mary and her council send to Norwich for them, promising the city "shall receive money presently" 5 for them.
After hearing the army is ready and eager to do battle, Mary sets a day "when she would come from the castle to view and muster her army, and gratify her soldiers, who deserved so well of her, with her presence. Consequently at the queen's command issued through a trumpeter, 20th July was assigned for the inspection." 6
Meanwhile...
Henry Neville, Lord Abergavenny and Sir Thomas Wyatt (of Wyatt's rebellion) write to the gentlemen of Sussex, requiring them to proclaim Mary queen and denouncing "the lady Jane, a queen of a new and pretty invention." 7
Jane Grey acts as godmother to Edward Underhill's child, a son named Guildford in honour of her husband. 8
The Privy Council meet in private and agree to proclaim Mary queen. 9
The Imperial ambassadors are visited by the Earl of Shrewsbury and John Mason from the Privy Council. They inform them that "Though it had been said that the late King Edward's devise touching the succession had received the assent of the Council, only three or four of them had given their willing consent, and the rest had been compelled and treated almost as if they were prisoners." 10 They reveal they are planning to proclaim Mary queen.
Around 4pm, Mary is proclaimed Queen of England, France and Ireland around London. 11
When the Duke of Suffolk hears what the Council have done, he "went to the Lady Jane, who was at supper, and tore down the canopy, saying no more than that it was not for her to use it, for her position permitted her not to do so. When the Lady Jane heard of the Council's determination, she replied that she would give it up as gladly as she had accepted it; she knew that the right belonged to Queen Mary." 12 The Duke then rushes to proclaim her himself on Tower Hill. 13
At nightfall, Northumberland retreats back to Cambridge. 14

Note
teddy, king, beloved, sunbright,
what the fuck are the ballad brothers
Therse guys in my head. I don’t know very much about them but maybe making a masterpost will help? Literally I cannot emphasize enough how much I was just listening to music while I was driving and. now there’s guys in there. With a lot of implied sci-fantasy worldbuilding I don’t understand yet. Anyway!
Kyrie Aleidis Ballad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
29, she/her, former sword-for-hire, current fugitive. The older Ballad Brother. Priorities include vibing and keeping things good for her baby brother (before) and trying to fix the world after it broke (metaphorically) while she was gone (after). Diagnosed big fuckoff “microchip sword like that guy from Transistor”
The Horatio to FG!C. The Gojo to Haibara. The Mordred to Gawain (HNOC). Also Guinevere (HNOC). Laertes (Hamlet). If Roddy was a little more serious and had less responsibility. Little bit of Cyclonus aswell but in a Whirl way. Dyker robobs if he was marginally less traumatized.
Alonzo ‘Toro’ Ballad
(Except only Kyrie is allowed to call him that)(Ari tried it once to be obnoxious and he punched them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
25, he/him, former Little Guy, current sword-for-hire. The younger Ballad Brother. Priorities include: being just like his sister when he grows up (before) and do you think he fuckin knows he’s just trying to get from day to day over here (after). Terminal funny bitch (emphasis on the bitch). He’s even asexual.
If Feldspar DM grew up to be FG!C/Underhill Jay Sleepaway. The Haibara to Gojo. Gawain HNOC. Tien Stormlight. Cyrus Planegays. They’re both kind of Zoro also actually. If Miki RGU grew up to be John-or-Benny OSCU. If you combined the entire Ricosquad robobs into one guy.
Ari Basil Finch (Seneca)
Tumblr media
25, any pronouns, several jobs best summed up as Mad Scientist. (Weapons tech guy. Intern. Part time front desk in the financial department. Necromancer. Not the order they would put those in.) Priorities include: bringing their [somebody] back from the dead, causing problems on purpose. (No I don’t know who they’re trying to bring back I just know they can’t do it.)(why? good question.) Nepo baby extraordinaire. There’s something wrong with them in the brain <3
Other Things I Know:
there’s an organization
Kyrie fucked off to work there as a sword for hire when Alonzo was like 14 without saying anything (first time they had ever been meaningfully separated)
These bitches don’t have parents (possibly sci-fi shenanigans)
Alonzo found out that’s where she was a couple years later and joined up as soon as he could
Shortly before that she quit and/or got fired very very dramatically and became the organization’s Public Enemy Number One
Alonzo was kind of underground during that and he still doesn’t really know what’s going on. He’s not gonna get her ass tho.
At some point they have a confrontation swordfight on a roof. I don’t know what the deal with that is.
Alonzo and Ari have a weird fucked up gay thing going on best described as Part Time Boyfriends. Kind of dating. Also Ari is 100% milking the sugar daddy angle of Running Front Desk In The Financial Department. And also they’re kind of just coworkers (derogatory). (TLDR. POV you have to wrangle with the financial department at work to get your expenses account in order for your next assassination but you got a little too close to the guy running the front desk over there and now they think it’s funny to fuck with you)
Alonzo doesn’t have any faith in the necromancy. Heehoo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s about it??? Rotations to follow.

books i read in 2024
Okay so last year I made a post where I was like, wow, I only read 12 books in 2022, but in 2023 I managed to read 30, isn't that impressive...
So, um, this year I hit 75 by the end of June.
Quite a bit of reading got done during a slow period at work in January. Then the autism/adhd found the challenges on Storygraph and got a bit hyperfixated - my two biggest months were May and June, with 15 and 20 books respectively.
Things slowed way down after October, since I've mostly been reading Agatha All Along fanfiction, which sadly doesn't count toward my total. I did manage to limp my way to a grand total of 125 by the end of December.

The subgenre of horror-westerns is not often used. In 1966, however, Embassy Pictures released a pair of this mixed breed on a groovy double feature. Joining Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter (1966) is tonight’s feature discussion, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (1966). Both of these genre mashups are directed by William Beaudine. Once again, Dracula is portrayed by John Carradine (House of Frankenstein, 1944; House of Dracula, 1945) and you might also recognize Chuck Courtney, who plays Billy the Kid, from (Pet Sematary, 1989). From there the cast becomes a who’s who of TV and Film Westerns character actors, putting Jeff in his happy place!
Carradine once said this film was “the worst movie he ever acted in.” The Grue-Crew may have other thoughts. Check it out now and let us know what you think of this bizarre and fun blend of genres.
At the time of this writing, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula is available for streaming from several different sources. The Grue Crew found the best resolution on the Classic Horror Movie Channel and Kanopy, but, among others, it can also be found on Tubi and Plex. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Jeff, is Beyond the Time Barrier (1960), directed by Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934) and starring Robert Clarke (The Hideous Sun Demon, 1958).
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel, the site, or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]
