There's no point in trying not to fall. You always fall. But the trick is you get up, you dust yourself off, and make sure you don't become dust.

To continue ranting and raving. The thoughtful and nuanced approach to historical individuals is to recognize that the majority of people in history had no opportunity to self-narrate and we will never have direct access to their thoughts and psychology; this goes trebly and quadruply for women, not least because of the many circumstances throughout time and culture that have kept women poorer, less empowered, and less educated than male peers of their own class. We can imagine what their actions meant to them and try to put ourselves, empathetically, in their shoes, but a great deal of modern historical scholarship is concerned with de-familiarizing the past and reminding us that while historical peoples were certainly similar to and had many things in common with us, they were also incredibly different. We can make arguments and draw inferences but the truth is, we don't know. We can imagine, but we don't know. It's incredibly stupid to bluntly declare that you know for certain not only the historical cause of a significant and highly culturally-specific event, but that you can without question or nuance root that cause in the psyches of people who have been dead for hundreds of years. Please think with your special mind for two seconds.

The organizing principle in my mind for the tone and the comedy in [Only Murders in the Building] is “New York City.” New York holds it all: You can have something hugely dramatic happening when you step outside of your building in New York that’s upsetting and deeply concerning, and you have people grabbing onto each other that you never even knew before who are experiencing something as a unit. Once we squared on the tone of the show as New York City, you could have your cake and eat it too with these comedic geniuses. What if the cat is in the freezer? You can play a scene with Steve Martin discovering a cat in the freezer and having to pull it out and one of the legs snaps off and now he’s putting it in his pocket. But that scene has to be married with something deeply grounding: He then encounters Oliver in a very low moment where he’s going to sell the valuable poster of his hugest failure on Broadway. It’s absurdist, but both things are being held at once. It all has to be in good measure and give the audience what they want, but it has to be organically true to the narrative we’re building. That’s the joy of this show: It can go a lot of different directions, and you never know where it’s going to go from one moment to the next.

Paul Krassner … in 1963 created a miracle of compressed intelligence nearly as admirable for potent simplicity, in my opinion, as Einstein’s e=mc2. With the Vietnam War going on, and with its critics discounted and scorned by the government and the mass media, Krassner put on sale a red, white and blue poster that said FUCK COMMUNISM. At the beginning of the 1960s, FUCK was believed to be so full of bad magic as to be unprintable. COMMUNISM was to millions the name of the most loathsome evil imaginable. To call an American a communist was like calling somebody a Jew in Nazi Germany. By having FUCK and COMMUNISM fight it out in a single sentence, Krassner wasn’t merely being funny as heck. He was demonstrating how preposterous it was for so many people to be responding to both words with such cockamamie Pavlovian fear and alarm.
Kurt Vonnegut quoted in a post by Jason Schafer in Dangerous Minds. Cagnitive Dissonance: Paul Krassner's 'Fuck Communism' Banner, 1963.
The last few weeks at work I've done little else at work other than load bags of mulch into people's vehicles. An awful lot of guys my age are dicks. Some of them have 'Fuck Biden" bumper stickers on their Yank tanks. I've known for a long time sayiing that I'm an old hippie doesn't mean what I think it means. A whole lot of people really hate hippies. And the Biden bumper sticker and Krassner's banner gets to a part of what people think they don't tlike about hippies.
"Fuck Biden' isn't funny today because the F-word simply doesn't have the same "bad magic." I do suspect that people sporting the sticker sense of specter of humor, Lenny Bruce or George Carlin's 'Seven Words'. But nobody finds 'Fuck Biden' funny, it's merely mean and crass. It's the cruelty that titilates.
I do sometimes visit The Realist Archive. I don't know what people today will make of it.

But they’re not written off. Sure, they’re going to LA to pursue their careers, and idk how’s Mabel and Tobert, but Oliver and Loretta haven’t broken up yet. Even John Hoffman said that Meryl might be interested in season 4.
But if Theobel and Olicharles won’t be an endgame, we riot.
I love how we straight up watched Oliver AND Mabel's love interests be written off the show in real time

HOW MANY OF YOU KNEW THIS ABOUT BROTHER WESLEY?!
Snipes formed a production company, Amen-Ra Films, in 1991 and a subsidiary, Black Dot Media, to develop projects for film and television.
AMEN RA PRODUCTIONS PRODUCED ALL OF THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL (AND LUCRATIVE) BLADE MOVIES
Snipes has been training in martial arts since age 12, earning a 5th dan black belt in Shotokan Karate and 2nd dan black belt in Hapkido.
In the late 1990s, Snipes and his brother started a security firm called the Royal Guard of Amen-Ra, dedicated to providing VIPs with bodyguards trained in law enforcement and martial arts. In 1996, the first film produced by Amen Ra productions was A Great And Mighty Walk – Dr. John Henrik Clarke, in which Snipes narrated.
In 2000, the business was investigated for alleged ties to the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors. It emerged that Snipes had spotted 200 acres (0.81 km2) of land with the intention to buy and use for his business academy, which were close to the compound in Putnam County, Georgia. Both Snipes' business and the groups used Egyptian motifs as their symbols. Ultimately, Snipes and his brother did not buy the land, instead establishing their company in Florida, Antigua, and Africa.
Snipes, who was raised a Christian, converted to Islam in 1978, but left Islam in 1988. During a 1991 interview, Snipes said "[Islam made] me more conscious of what African people have accomplished, of my self-worth, [and gave] me some self-dignity."

Hi! I was wondering if you had any opinions on the play Red by John Logan? Really admire the Rothko work you do!
First of all, thank you.
Secondly, I think I maybe in a weird position to critique this. I have read almost everything written about Rothko that I know exists. All the books, all the articles I could find and all the interviews I can put my hands on where people who knew him talk. I actually have you guys to thank for this because until this blog got popular, I didn't know much about his life other than the basics. But, feeling some responsibility to my "Audience" and chosen subject, I tired to educate myself in this niche.
Because of this, one naturally forms a picture of the person in your head based on these collected impressions. I think most people don't really know much about him, at least until recently.
I am thankful that the play was an entrée into the art for a lot of people. Like the Rothko episode of Mad Men, many people are brought to awareness of the Rothko through these other mediums and I think that's really cool.
The thing though is that John Logan wrote the movie Gladiator, and you can tell. I see nothing bad about that kind of drama, it just doesn't jibe with my impression of Rothko, While Rothko was sensitive, upset at times, neurotic and opinionated, careful and studious, but he was not this bellowing pontificator that I feel is represented in the play. Again there's nothing wrong with making a drama of it, it's just something that I divorce from Rothko's actual character. I used to have a job reading movie scripts for an actor and you find a lot of common devices people use to make the drama effective, and I feel Red uses a lot of those to good effect. Every play or movie I have ever seen about an artist takes the task of making a largely internal process, external enough for the audience to become engrossed in.
Rothko was sensitive, well-spoken intellectual man. Many of his friends speak of his great tenderness and generosity towards them. The play seeks to pit him and his assistant as two poles of the art world, the new encroaching on the old. Again, fine as a dramatic device but Rothko painted alone, and he talked about painting to no one, ever. Anyone who knew Rothko says he never discussed his art. So any conversations in the play are entirely fantasy.
So, basically I think the play is entertaining and hopefully gets people interested in the art, but I wouldn't take it like a biography of Rothko! And that's really my main point, not to knock the play but to point out the differences between fact and fiction.
Here's some context:
"When I've seen my father portrayed, I've sort of winced, because it doesn't sound like him or come across like him. He was a very warm, humorous person, I remember him telling me silly stories as a child. - Kate Rothko
"As I see him, he was a very loving, essentially feeling man. He was loving and lovable. He liked to put on a rough show. I mean he liked to talk tough. He presented to me a softness. And I was full of my Oriental, religious view of things. I never attempted to talk to him about it because he didn't respond to it. I took it that it was his concern with the world which was from boyhood because of his parentage and finding the same ugliness and stupidity in the art world as in the world that made him so convinced that life wasn't worth living." -Wallace Putnam
Mark is often presented as off-putting; however, he really was quite warm, nurturing and could be very funny." - Regina Bogat
"(Rothko had) a genuine charitable impulse. It grew out of real sympathy. I don't think it was a put-on in any way, nor for self-aggrandizement...there are numbers of cases in which while he was alive he helped persons and always anonymously. He never wanted it known, nor did he ever talk about it." - Stanley Kunitz
*forgive typos, my brain does not see them until weeks after the fact
