Star Trek Explorer magazine #11, edited by me, is out now , published by Titan Magazines featuring a huge lead interview with Star Trek: Discovery star Sinequa Martin-Green, via Ian Spelling. She teases things to come as the series draws to a close, and offers some candid comments on what she hopes the legacy of the show will be.
Across the print and subscriber-only supplement we also have exclusive short stories from Keith R.A. DeCandido, Michael Dismuke, Rich Handley and David Mack. A fine lineup!
Michael’s tale is a Star Trek: Picard short story, "Confirmation Bias" illustrated by Pete Wallbank, centring on a difficult encounter between Captain Shaw and Seven of Nine aboard the U.S.S. Titan-A. You can read an excerpt here https://www.startrek.com/news/star-trek-explorer-11-excerpt
In David Mack's story, "Dignified Transfer," it’s a sad mission for Captain Picard.
This issue also has an exclusive interview with the Hagemans, creators of Star Trek: Prodigy, and IDW’s Heather Antos chats with Rich Handley about the company’s plans for their Star Trek comics.
I’m grateful too, to former editor Paul Simpson for his poignant contribution to this issue, reflecting on his Star Trek experiences in a special “Trek through Life”. Thank you.
Thanks to all the contributors this issue: Chris Dows, Rich Handley, Aaron Harvey, Lisa Herrera, John Kirk, Andrew Lane, Rich Matthews, Louis de Martinis, Joe Nazzaro, Larry Nemecek, Paul Simpson, Ian Spelling, Jay Stobie, Paul Travers (wait, who? 😀) and Andy Walker

Reading the Hermetica: SH 8 + SH 12 + SH 13 + SH 14 + SH 7
For this week’s Reading the Hermetica discussion, we’re continuing our reading and discussion of the Stobaean Hermetic Fragments (SH), specifically fragments 8, 12, 13, 14, and 7 (SH 8 + SH 12 + SH 13 + SH 14 + SH 7).  These texts touch on providence, necessity, fate, and justice as guiding principles of the world, its functioning, and our right-relationship to it and to God.  As ever, if you…

Like, give me a multi-chapter Stoby slowburn and I'll believe in the power that is Stoby.
... now that I think about it, I've pegged Steve as a Prince (of what aspect I don't know) and Toby as an Heir of Hope. Which is similar to DirkJohn, as Dirk is a Prince of Heart and John's a Heir of Breath.
Now I want to see where this Stoby hole leads to.
I was about to ask for Jaune/Ruby (ship name: Lancaster) based on your very limited knowledge of the show but asking you to do so may invite spoilers *so* Stoby.
Stoby's okay I guess.
I mean, if you really want me to be honest... it's cute? But also I can't really get it (for once in my life), nor feel the breadth of the romance. Because I like being rooted a little in canon and using that as a basis for chemistry, and a lot of Stoby is just... fanon. Incredible and surprising fanon that deserves attention (and also my attention), yes, but also Steve and Toby aren't truly fleshed out characters, so I can't see what romantic potential and spark the two might have or what that type of romantic relationship would offer aside from constantly insulting each other and being a comedic and cowardly duo. In Homestuck we call that a blackrom oh wait shit you think my Homestuck is cringy sorry
SPEAKING of Homestuck, there's a similar ship that I ship there in terms of "have barely talked before". That ship is called DirkJohn, and why do I ship it? Because both of these characters have been incredibly fleshed out, given nuance, and have had their emotions explored various times. And that's all I'll say on that because it will probably get way too long, whoops.
RWBY will probably make me feel the same way Homestuck did - great character depth. Trollhunters... hasn't, and I doubt its second sequel will.
So that's a neutral ship for me. It's not a NOTP or a BROTP, but it's not an OTP, either.

Hey can you tell something about ur country that you are proud of and something nice :)
I like the warm-hearted, generous, hostile and welcoming people, if we put their awful flaws aside. What I mostly like about Macedonia are the ancient buildings and cities, like Heraclea Lyncestis and Stobi. Other good things that I will ALWAYS BE HOPELESSLY IN LOVE WITH are the landscapes, the rivers, the mountains, the fields, the lakes and the ancient mountain monasteries. Some breathtaking things that you should google if you want to be amazed are: Ohrid Lake, Church of St. John at Kaneo, MATKA CANYON, Baba Mountain and The Pelister Eyes. The Pelister Eyes are two PREHISTORIC tiny lakes at the top of a very tall mountain, which still hold some ancient fossils untouched by humans, and they are protected. They are named Pelister Eyes because when you look at them on google maps or from a satellite, they look like eyes of the mountain because of their forms and they’re so close to each other, it’s otherworldly and creepy at the same time. You can also google Bitola, it’s the city I live in. There are buildings older than 500 years in which people STILL LIVE IN, but those buildings are protected by the international treasure of Unesco and shouldn’t be touched, as is the Ohrid Lake. AND the food. Oh my gosh the food is just amazing, if I move out of this shithole I bet I’ll be coming every two years just for the food lmao. You can check this out!!https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g295109-Activities-Republic_of_Macedonia.html

W.H. Shipman ushers in a new president
The reins of the Big Island’s fourth-largest private landowner quietly changed hands last week.
The new president of W.H. Shipman Ltd. is Margaret “Peggy” Farias, previously the chief financial officer and treasurer of the Keaau-based company. She is the company’s seventh chief executive.
The 41-year-old Farias, the great-great-granddaughter of company founders William Herbert “Willie” Shipman and Mary Elizabeth Kahiwaaialii Johnson Shipman, succeeds her cousin, William “Bill” Walter, who retired after 13 years at the helm of the 136-year-old family-owned company that holds almost 17,000 acres of commercial, residential and agricultural property in Puna.
The mother of a 16-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son, Farias graduated from Waiakea High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from Harvard University and a master’s degree in conservation biology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Walter, a great-grandson of William and Mary Shipman and Hilo High graduate who remains the company’s board chair, last week moved to Columbia, S.C., where one of his daughters lives. He first approached Farias in 2012 about the possibility of succeeding him. She joined the company in 2014 as assistant treasurer, where she learned the ins-and-outs of the business from her father, Tom English, who has since retired as Shipman’s CFO and treasurer.
Walter, who turned 70 in June, returned from the mainland after almost four decades to lead the company in 2005. He was an information technology consultant after a career as a corporate executive for Peterbilt Motors Co. and Mitsubishi’s truck division. Walter’s appointment as president returned the company’s top spot to a family member for the first time in 11 years.
Bob Cooper became the company CEO after the 1994 retirement of Walter’s maternal uncle, Roy Shipman Blackshear, the company’s third president. Blackshear in 1976 succeeded Willie Shipman’s son, Herbert Cornelius Shipman, who assumed the helm upon his father’s death in 1943. Cooper was succeeded by Bob Saunders, another chief executive without Shipman family ties.
“It’s a very difficult thing for someone who is not in the family to run a company that’s a family company,” Walter said of Cooper and Saunders. “I think they did a yeoman’s job, but I think at the end of that, the family said let’s see if we can do this ourselves, again, and I came back to do that.”
Walter, a former U.S. Navy submarine supply officer who earned his bachelor’s degree at Wheaton College in Illinois and M.B.A. at the University of Washington, said retirement at 70 was his plan all along.
“In any business, but especially in a family business, succession planning is really important,” said Walter, who added Farias is a “really good fit” to oversee the company — which owns, among other holdings, Shipman Business Park, Keaau Shopping Center, and the lion’s share of agricultural land around Keaau.
“Her background is in science. But a lot of the thought process that you go through is actually similar, I think,” he said.
Farias said Walter was “very conscientious in setting the company up to succeed once he retired.”
“We have a lot of exciting projects coming up, a lot of good projects, and I’m looking forward to the next 20 to 25 years … just to see what we build,” Farias said.
In the works is a master plan for Keaau village that could add 940 residential units in two phases over the course of 10 to 15 years, commercial development on 15 acres and a wastewater treatment plant. The project’s draft environmental assessment describes the project as a “walkable, transit-friendly regional town center concept” with “nearly all the project area … within a 10-minute walk of existing civic areas and the Keaau Elementary, Middle, and/or High School.”
“One of the problems you have in the schools here, so few kids are able to walk to school. A lot of them are bused in,” Walter said. “That creates a hardship on a lot of the families. I go to a lot of school meetings, and that’s what you hear over and over again, how hard it is on the families. We want to provide homes for those people.”
Walter described the current iteration of the plan as an extension of a master plan started in 2005-06.
“(Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) was up the road, which is important,” he said. “… Keaau schools had established here. But there was a lot of empty space in the village, a lot of cleanup yet to be done. There were houses along Keaau-Pahoa road that were just falling down and really a mess. The first issue was cleaning that up, then starting to build. And people found it surprising that we were building buildings. But we started to do that.
“Reflecting on where we are today, it’s really gratifying to me that you have HMSA, you have Liliuokalani Trust, you have (Kamehameha Schools) and their office groups. All of those groups you would have expected, generally, to be in Hilo. And they were all very anxious to get out here to Keaau and into Keaau village. This is where they wanted to be. You look at that as a transformation. These are organizations that are among the best in the state of Hawaii, and when they wanted to expand here on this side of the island, Keaau is where they chose to come. That’s really gratifying to the company.”
The Shipmans’ ties to Keaau go back 137 years.
Willie Shipman was born in 1854 in Lahaina, Maui, to Christian missionaries William Cornelius Shipman and Jane Stobie Shipman. Shipman’s father died of typhus in 1861, and in 1868, Shipman’s mother married businessman William H. Reed, for whom Reed’s Bay and Reed’s Island in Hilo are named. Reed, who had no children of his own, sent the young Shipman to be educated at Punahou School on Oahu and Knox College in Illinois.
When Reed died in 1880, Willie Shipman was sole heir to his estate. A year later, Shipman and two partners, Captain J.E. Eldarts and Samuel M. Damon, bought for $20,000 the entire ahupaa of Keaau, about 70,000 acres, from the King Lunalilo estate. Shipman later bought the partners out.
The company has been a major player in agribusiness, long before the word was coined in the 1950s, and in the beginning leased much of its land to sugar, coffee and tropical fruit growers. In 1899, Shipman and partners including Damon, B.F. Dillingham, Lorrin A. Thurston and Alfred W. Carter established Olaa Sugar Co., which later became Puna Sugar Co. A mill was erected in 1900 in Olaa, which operated until 1982. In addition, Willie Shipman was a rancher.
Farias said agriculture remains a major component of W.H. Shipman Ltd.
“I think it’s the quiet employment driver in Keaau right now,” she said. “We don’t do active agriculture ourselves. Our role in agriculture is as a landlord. But we have over a hundred different farming operations that are our tenants, employing, at last estimate, between 900 to over 1,000 people in Keaau. … It’s more than the plantation ever employed; that’s my understanding. And we want that to continue to be the case. … We’re working with displaced farmers from lower Puna, trying to see if we can accommodate their needs — if we can clear some of the lands that are more heavily infested with albizia.”
Shipman ag lands near Keaau became the center of controversy during a months-long lava crisis in 2014, when lava from Kilauea volcano came close to crossing Highway 130 in Pahoa. Walter feels he and the company were unfairly scapegoated by those who want an emergency access road cut through Shipman property. Walter’s position is that, in addition to taking acreage away from tenant farmers, such a road would open up the leasehold lands to agricultural theft and aphid-borne diseases such as banana bunchy-top virus. He added that Shipman offered land adjacent to 130 to build frontage roads.
“You hear people, particularly the politicians, say over and over again there’s only one emergency road out of lower Puna. It’s completely inaccurate. There are three paved roads out of lower Puna,” Walter said, noting that the portion of Railroad Avenue bulldozed near Hawaiian Beaches allowed those from lower Puna alternative access to Hawaiian Paradise Park and Ainaloa subdivision, where there are additional paved roads leading to Keaau.
“Why would you say there is one, when there are three paved roads out of lower Puna? You’re inciting panic when there’s no need for it.”
Walter said if conditions warrant, the issue could always be revisited in the future, but Shipman can’t be expected to shoulder the burden alone.
“If the community, staring in Pahoa and ending up in Hilo, everyone, said we’re all willing to contribute to have this road connecting them, we’re not going to stand in the way. We’re not going to be the one that stops it,” he said. “We’ll sit down with the whole community and say let’s work this out in a way that minimizes the damages to the farms and accomplishes this purpose. … We’ve offered solutions. The situation’s not as dire as it’s described.”
Walter said Shipman’s commitment to Puna “is validated by the fact that we stepped forward and said, ‘Here’s the land for a bypass’” of Keaau village on Highway 130 adjacent to Keaau High School.
Farias said she’s grateful for the opportunity to honor “a very special legacy.”
“I think one of the things that we as a company, that we as a family, recognize is that we don’t exist without the Keaau community,” she said. “And what’s good for the community is good for us. And we like to think that what’s good for us is good for the community. It’s in many ways a symbiotic relationship.
“The board asked me, ‘If you’re elected president, what are you going to do?’ And it’s a very simple answer. My vision is to continue helping to build a community that my children and my grandchildren can be proud to be a part of and will be proud to be a part of.”

“Operated ‘Still’ Underground,” Sudbury Star. January 18, 1919. Page 03. --- Biggest Affair of Its Kind Yet Found Unearthed at Stobie Mine - Conviction Recorded. --- An illicit whiskey ‘still’ which was described in police court as a ‘young distillery’ was located this week on the property of Mrs. Kainola st Stobie Mine and with it was found a quantity of ‘mash’ and also spirits. The defendant was fine $300 and costs in Thursday’s police court. The case may be appealed. The place has been under police surveilance for some time. On Tuesday last a visit was paid by the police to the home of Mrs. Kainola and after a lengthy search the party unearthed one of the most completely constructed and cleverly hidden stills yet discovered. It was located at a spot about a quarter of a mile from the Kainola home, and entrance was gained to it through a small door, to get through which the officers had to do some stooping. Once inside, however, they found a large underground chamber, in which were four barrels. A passage way led to another large chamber in which was a boiler of about 30 gallons capacity. This was bricked-in on three sides, and covered and sealed closely. From its top two pipes led to another large receptacle filled with ice and water, which made the condensing plant, and the liquor drained from this into a pail through a tap in the bottom. In this boiler there was found traces of recent use. A large quantity of dry wood and some coal oil were also found apparently in preparation for another distillation.
After exploring their ‘find’ there the officers returned to the homestead, and in a search there they found a quantity of ‘mash’ which, it came out in the evidence, showed that the manipulators were well advanced in their trade as they took the precaution of grinding the grain before ‘setting’ it. A couple of gallons of liquor were also found in the lean-to, and both these exhibits created interest in police court.
Inland Revenue Officer Bouskill told Magistrate Brodie that the still was the most up-to-date one yet found, and was cleverly hidden. He stated that they had not brought it in because there was no danger of any one taking it away. He also stated that it would require a charge of dynamite to destroy it, so complete was it and so well was it built. Many Liquor Cases In Thursday’s court Profim Bontarenko of Coniston, was charged with having been intoxicated and damaging a residence there. He was fined $20 and costs on the intoxication charge and ordered to pay $2 for the damages done.
A. Delucca, against whom there are three charges of having in possession and drinking liquor in a place other than a private one, and E. Pellis, who also faces similar charges, were remanded till Saturday at the instance of the defence.
Joseph Labrie was charged with having liquor in a place other than a private dwelling and was fine $200 and costs. A charge of assault on the proprietor of the New American Hotel drew a fine of $5 and costs, and in addition the defendant will have to settle for some damage done to a room in the American, which he accomplished during a spree. A companion of Labrie’s named Rochon is in St. Joseph’s hospital recovering from injuries sustained in a fight in the room and he will face a charge of intoxication as soon as he is able to leave that institution.
John Dziou was charged by Officer Martin of Garson Mine with having a bottle of liquor in his possession contrary to the provisions of the O.T.A. and he was fine $200 and costs or three months.
Two foreigners who were arrested in Sudbury last night without having the necessary permission to be absent from Copper Cliff, admitted their guilt and were fine $10 and costs each. Onesieme Dumolin was charged with having stolen a suit of clothes from the office of the St. Denis Employment Agency in March last. He elected to be tried summarily by Magistrate Brodie and was remanded for one week.

Top Ten Most Loved Homes Of 2018
Top Ten Most Loved Homes Of 2018
Homes
by Lucy Feagins, Editor
The home of Rachel Castle, in Sydney was SO hugely popular this year. A bright and full bookshelf taking centre stage in the dining room. Penny round cushions by Castle. Photo – Caitlin Mills for The Design Files. Styling – Annie Portelli.
A look into the living room, which connects to the hallways via steel-frame doors. Pink Togo sofa from Domo. Villemot print from Vintage Posters Only. Photo – Caitlin Mills for The Design Files. Styling – Annie Portelli.

The Sunshine Home
Rachel Castle needs little introduction to TDF readers, and this tour of her family home Northbridge Sydney was one of the most loved articles of 2018! It isn’t hard to see why – the self-proclaimed ‘fun enthusiast’ has injected so much fun to her colourful house, whilst maintaining an effortless, timeless sense of style.
Revisit our original story (and  many more pics!) here.
Inside Josh and Jenna Densten‘s North Carlton cottage. The tonal living room features soft pinks, sharp whites, oak timber and mauve tones and brick floors that make the room feel relaxed and inviting. Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins/The Design Files.
Jenna and Josh had almost every piece of furniture custom made to fit perfectly in the space! The dining table is on a clamp and can be removed. Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Brick floors by Brickworks wrap up to create the the kicker. Self watering plant above. ‘The soft pink tile that covers the central pod was the starting point in selecting tones and is one of our favourite elements,’ says Jenna. Tiles by Artedomus, overhead cupboards painted a soft apricot to compliment the tiles. Joinery by Joel Elliot.Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
A Tonal, Tiny North Melbourne Cottage
Way back in March, we visited the picture-perfect home of Josh and Jenna Densten of Bicker Design (also of The Block, in 2011!).
This TINY North Melbourne cottage is a mere 4 metres wide (approximately the length of a Voltswagon beetle), and 8 metres long (a double decker bus is 8.3), necessitating clever design to the maximise every last inch of space!  Josh and Jenna didn’t see size as a limitation here though. They used the small footprint as an opportunity to get creative, rather than viewing the small proportions as a constraint. This philosophy resonated with many of you, with one of our readers, Ann, enthusing ‘I so love people that seek to live with less.’ Hear hear!

The kitchen in the Adamo’s Bangalow family home. Courtney and Michael had joiner David Harris re-create the Shaker-style kitchen they had in their London home. Lighting from Dunlin. Range cooker by Lacanche. Fridge by Smeg. Photo – Kara Rosenlund for The Design Files.
A corner of the lounge room, looking into the sunroom. When the Adamo’s bought the house, the sunroom was a separate room with closed walls on either side. Courtney and Michael opened everything up to let the light stream through. Rug from Pampa. Photo – Kara Rosenlund for The Design Files.
The dining room. ‘We bought the old wishbone chairs off the previous owner. The other chairs are old, original Bentwoods we’ve been slowly collecting over the last couple of years since we moved here to Australia,’ says Courtney. Lighting from Dunlin. Photo – Kara Rosenlund for The Design Files.
Finding Bliss In Byron Bay With Courtney Adamo
Let’s just say, we weren’t quite prepared for ‘The Courtney Effect’ when we ran a story on the dreamy home of Babyccino Kids co-founder Courtney Adamo and her family, just last month. WOAH. The response was H-U-G-E. This beautiful, tranquil family home in Bangalow struck a chord with so many of you, receiving more website traffic than ANY other home we featured this year… and the reach just keeps on growing!
The idyllic world of Courtney, Michael, and their five kids was captured for us by the one and only Kara Rosenlund – making it a very special story on more than one count!

The South Melbourne home of Architect Amy Hallett of Topology and her partner Darren Kaye. Outdoor paving is Bamstone bluestone. Inside are Vintage Hans Wegner Plank Chairs from Grandfather’s Axe, art is by Dean Brown and Elle Linklater. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Kitchen details. Tiles by The City Tiler, hand turned custom joinery handles modelled on the original joinery handles in the old house by Amy’s brother John Hallett, benchtops are Carrara Marble, knife block by Lex Stobie, ceramics from Marimekko, Vintage Arabia, Iitala, Fuping Pottery, oven & cooktop by Asko. The GORGEOUS courtyard through to the studio, where all external materials are selected to weather. Wall light from Davey Lighting via Dunlin Home, vintage Hans Wegner wall unit from Grandfathers Axe, yellow chairs from Stylecraft, Silvertop Ash hardwood cladding and deck and limed Baltic pine ceiling. A Cleverly Crafted Beach House in the City
Architect Amy Hallett of Topology  and her partner Darren Kaye did the unthinkable to create their dream three-bedroom home in South Melbourne. They totally demolished their home of five years, and started again!
With the clever insertion of a central courtyard, and an atypical floorplan that sees the kitchen situated at the front (rather than rear) of the house, this small home packs a big punch. It’s an elegant, supremely understated solution for a small site, and achieves a miraculously roomy feeling, despite its modest size.

Mary Featherston’s incredible ‘granny flat’ adjoining her heritage listed home in Ivanhoe.  Super slim steel window frames designed by Julian Featherston, and fabricated by Shaweld. Contour Chairs by Grant Featherston. Photo – Amelia Stanwix.
Mary’s residence adjoins the iconic Featherston House designed by Robin Boyd in 1967. Photo – Amelia Stanwix.
Custom designed transparent glass stair, painstakingly designed by Mary’s son Julian, using 2 layers of 12mm toughened glass. Photo – Amelia Stanwix.
A Spectacular Update For Mary Featherston’s Iconic ‘Featherston House’
It feels incredibly cheeky to call this heritage renovation and addition a ‘granny flat’ – but they are the words of Australian design royalty, Mary Featherston… and we don’t argue with Mary! After 50 years in her iconic Robin Boyd designed home, Mary worked with her son, Julian Featherston, on the design for this new addition – a project that will eventually enable Julian’s own family to move into the main home, keeping three generations of Featherstons under one roof.
This house went C-R-A-Z-Y when we first ran this story back in June… and deservedly so! One reader, Mandy, wrote ‘this is so beautiful and restrained’ – and we completely agree.
Revisit Mary Featherston’s incredible home here.
The bright, breezy Elsternwick home of photographer Derek Swalwell and wife, stylist Georgia Young, and their daughter, Mia. House of Orange round dining table and pendant lights. Pierre + Charlotte stools. Over kitchen island bench are Muuto pendant lights. Photo – Eve Wilson for The Design Files.
‘It’s just so cosy, and feels solid’, Derek says of the Kennedy Nolan addition. Photographic print in background, ‘Mexico ‘by Jack Shelton. Photo – Eve Wilson for The Design Files.

A Photographer + Stylist’s Vibrant Family Home
When one of Australia’s most respected architectural photographers let us in to capture his own home earlier this year  – suffice to say the pressure was on! Photographer Derek Swalwell and wife, stylist Georgia Young, live in a beautiful, bright and colourful home in Elsternwick, renovated by Kennedy Nolan. From orange brick veneer to sleek white exterior, this is a stunning and sensitive transformation. (And we’re pretty sure, this is Melbourne’s most photogenic kitchen!)
Revisit the original story here.
Is this the best share house in Melbourne? The master bedroom features a built-in marble mantlepiece and a GIANT Monstera deliciosa (picked up for under $200 – bargain!) Photo – Eve Wilson.
Bountiful fruit and veg spread in ceramic bowls purchased when Sally worked at Mud Australia! Photo – Eve Wilson.
Looking from the living room into the kitchen, featuring the housemates’ most prized possession – a burnt orange Featherston couch Pip found on Gumtree! Photo – Eve Wilson.
The Ultimate Melbourne Share House
Our very own staff member and general wonder woman Sally Tabert shared her own share-house earlier this year – one of the most beautiful and well-loved communal homes we have ever featured. This home shatters every stereotype and pre-conception you may have of a youthful Melbourne share house, as the Northcote mansion’s inherent grandeur is equally matched by the styling prowess of the residents. How many share homes feature a Featherston sofa!?
Revisit Sally’s amazing sharehouse here!
The plant-filled rental home of Jenna Holmes, aka Plant Mama. The top floor studio, featuring an amazing plaid couch found by Jenna’s roommate on Gumtree. ‘Most people tend to pick up their jaw from the floor when they see this room of the house in particular, due to all the different nooks and design features,’ says Jenna! Photo – Eve Wilson.

A lush corner of the living room. ‘Plants jumbled together in big groups can create their own ecosystems, so that, mixed with the lighting and air flow creates the perfect urban jungle,’ Jenna tells us. Photo – Eve Wilson.
Plant Filled Richmond Rental
This home might be one of the leafiest we have ever featured on TDF! The Richmond rental was the temporary home of Jenna Holmes, aka Plant Mama – before the stunning property was earmarked for demolition. (Sadly, that was back in February, we’re pretty sure it’s no longer standing).
Reader responses to this home were heartfelt pleas to protect this architectural wonder. We can’t disagree with that sentiment! Take a visual stroll back through this gem, and don’t miss the stunning teardrop window.

Annie Portelli’s North Melbourne apartment. Edge-to-edge custom-built carpentry and shelves were designed to make the best use of space. Armchair from Muji, stool/side table is from Dowel Jones. The very cute desk chair is by Dustin Fritsche of Softer Studios. Photo – Caitlin Mills. Styling – Annie Portelli.
Another of Annie’s treasured items is this custom kitchen table which was collaboratively designed by Annie with the extremely talented Thomas Lentini. ‘I really cherish this piece of furniture, I have become so attached to it – I plan to have this one for life!’ says Annie. The woven leather chair is by Douglas and Bec. The chairs in-between are second hand. The mustard hanging pendant light is Verner Panton’s Flowerpot lamp, from &tradition. Photo – Caitlin Mills. Styling – Annie Portelli.
Yes. MORE terrazzo! Photo – Caitlin Mills. Styling – Annie Portelli.
Our Art Director’s Tiny Terrazzo Palazzo!
This stunning apartment could easily be viewed as a love letter to Terrazzo – there is barely a surface TDF art director Annie Portelli hasn’t adorned with her signature custom terrazzo treatment! Annie’s apartment is a dreamy example of what can be achieved in a small space (especially with an art director at the helm… and one very supportive family!).
Revisit Annie’s amazing abode, here!
The home of Coco Flip designer Kate Stokes and architect partner Haslett Grounds.  Pictured – 4 pendant light by Coco Flip, large and small artworks both by Sophie Moorhouse Morris, round wall clock by Daniel Emma, Puku ottoman and Robin coffee table by Coco Flip, Safari chair by Michael Hirst (it belonged to Haslett’s grandparents), rug from Loom, planters from Mr Kitly, leather sofa from Grandfather’s Axe, cushion from Kim Soo. Photo – Eve Wilson.
‘Our interior vibe is very relaxed and informal’ says Kate. Photo – Eve Wilson.

Themis Mono mobile (on shelf) by Clara Von Zweigbergk for Artecnica, glass ‘Yumemiru’ sculptures by Amanda Dziedzic, artwork on left is a collage by Trudy Moore, Yosemite photographic print by Cathy Marshall (framed by United Measures), Bright Side glass lamp by RBW for Artecnica (a gift after Kate did an internship with RBW in NYC!). Photo – Eve Wilson.
An Iconic Mid-Century Home In The Trees
This home is the tree-change retreat of Coco Flip designer Kate Stokes, and her architect partner Haslett Grounds. After tiring of inner-city living, the pair and their young family moved to leafy Eltham, after securing this stunning Alistair Knox designed home. This 1966 property is a split-level mid-century modern gem, enhanced by Kate and Haslett’s sensitive contemporary interior updates.

Reading the Hermetica: SH 3 + SH 19
For this week’s Reading the Hermetica discussion, we’re continuing our reading and discussion of the Stobaean Hermetic Fragments (SH), specifically fragments 3 and 19 (SH 3 + SH 9).  These texts touch on different kinds of souls, how souls might be considered, and how souls give form to life and living.  As ever, if you don’t have a copy of Litwa’s Hermetica II or Festugière/Nock’s Hermès…

Reading the Hermetica: SH 11
For this week’s Reading the Hermetica discussion, we’re continuing our reading and discussion of the Stobaean Hermetic Fragments (SH), specifically fragment 11 (SH 11).  This text is a lengthy fragment with a theme all its own: a collection of summary-statements (κεφαλαία kephalaía) that collectively frame a Hermetic understanding of fate.  As ever, if you don’t have a copy of Litwa’s Hermetica…

Reading the Hermetica: SH 6
For this week’s Reading the Hermetica discussion, we’re continuing our reading and discussion of the Stobaean Hermetic Fragments (SH), specifically fragment 6 (SH 6).  This text touches on the decans, astrological and meteorological phenomena, and how this all relates to the vision of God.  As ever, if you don’t have a copy of Litwa’s Hermetica II or Festugière/Nock’s Hermès Trismégiste (and I…
