benclymer: I spent this past weekend at @sxsw and hanging out with an amazing and inspiring group of friends in Austin. The highlights included seeing the @randomgolfclub HQ and a visit to @butlerpitchandputt with @erikanderslang, talking watches (unofficially) with @keeoone and @jaredpadalecki, seeing my old friends @peterattiamd and @bethlewisfit, listening to @danielarsham talk about his collabs and process, seeing some amazing concepts from @porsche including the new 357, and sharing a few meals with the @porschedesign team. But the culminating experience was getting to share the @hodinkee story with everyone on stage at the #porscheSXSW house alongside my friend Roland - who designed the Carrera GT, among many other things. Hope to be back very soon! Oh, and Big Boi from Outkast showed up Saturday night.

These aren’t all necessarily “weirder than Gloyd” but fall into three rough categories which I’ve dubbed: “that’s got a nice ring to it”, “if I used this in a novel it would be considered too unrealistic” and “you’ve got 5 seconds to name a character that lives in 1920s Oklahoma, GO!”:

Manila, Philippines — VoicePlay & Rachel Potter live performances
When VoicePlay and their buddy Rachel Potter released their "Moana medley" video in the summer of 2017, it went a bit viral and brought them a number of new fans, especially among young kids and their parents. A year later, one of those families invited the six singers to perform at their daughter's birthday party in Manila, with the added incentive of a public show for more of their Filipino fans. A trip to the other side of the world was an opportunity they weren't about to pass up. Even if it did require a full day of travel each way, everyone agreed that the experience was well worth it.

Early David Cronenberg
Clara Mayer in Stereo
Ronald Mlodzik in Crimes of the Future
Stereo (David Cronenberg, 1969)
Cast: Ronald Mlodzik, Jack Messinger, Paul Mulholland, Iain Ewing, Arlene Mlodzik, Clara Mayer, Glenn McCauley. Screenplay: David Cronenberg, Cinematography: David Cronenberg. Film editing: David Cronenberg.
Crimes of the Future (David Cronenberg, 1970)
Cast: Ronald Mlodzik, Ronald Mlodzik, John Lidolt, Tania Zolty, Paul Mulholland, Jack Messinger, Iain Ewing, William Haslam, Raymond Woodley, Stefan Czernecki, Rafe Macpherson, Willem Poolman. Screenplay: David Cronenberg. Cinematography: David Cronenberg. Film editing: David Cronenberg.
I can't imagine there's much of an audience for David Cronenberg's Stereo and Crimes of the Future (a title he reused in the 2022 feature, which borrows an element of the 1970 film but otherwise has no resemblance to the first one) except among film scholars and passionate devotees of his work. They look like the work of a film school student -- Cronenberg was teaching himself how to make movies at the time. Both are silent except for voiceovers that do what they can to give the images a narrative shape. In the case of Stereo, there's very little of that: The voiceovers sound like excerpts of lectures given by social science professors about a research project concentrated on telepathy and sexuality. Crimes of the Future has a more complex narrative line, as Adrian Tripod (Ronald Mlodzik), a dermatologist who heads a clinic called the House of Skin, tells about the attempts to halt a plague caused by cosmetics. It's a creepier film than Stereo, more in the line with Cronenberg's later work, with a nice performance by Mlodzik, who appeared in several of his films before entering the clergy.

Taylor Defeated in West Side Council Race
NEW YORK [September 24, 1989] — Dave Taylor's bid to become one of New York City's first openly gay city council members ended on election night, when he finished fifth in a field of 8 candidates vying for the leadership of Manhattan's fourth district, which includes the Upper West Side and Hell's Kitchen.
Taylor received 3,070 of the 41,998 votes cast in the race, which was won by Ronnie Eldridge, a longtime West Side politician who was once the liaison between the lesbian and gay community and former Mayor John Lindsay. The district's incumbent, Ruth Messinger, was successful in her run for the Democratic nomination for Manhattan Borough President.
[...]
Taylor, who had put drug abuse, homelessness, lesbian and gay rights and AIDS in the forefront of his campaign, said Tuesday night, "When I began this campaign 15 months ago, AIDS wasn't even mentioned by the other candidates.
"This is not the end," Taylor added. "One of the main reasons I ran was to build a progressive coalition of lesbians and gays, of Blacks and Hispanics, [of] women [and] minorities: people with progressive ideas, people who want to see this city turned around." Referring to David Dinkin's successful bid for the Democratic Party's nomination for mayor, he concluded, "We now have one hell of an opportunity to do that — we can elect David Dinkins as mayor."
— Keith Miller and Andrew Miller, OutWeek Magazine No. 14, September 24, 1989, p. 15.

@thequeer-quill
Sorry I had to go looking through old emails to find the lists sent to me, the fiction section is my personal rec list of books I'm reading and authors I love. I always always insist anyone who wants to write Indigenous characters in their stories need to read Indigenous authors. Not just to show support, but you’ll not find a better teacher on ensuring you're not falling into racist tropes and tokenizing your characters than by surrounding yourself with beloved stories and characters from that demographic.
For non fiction I've separated culture, language, and lore from the ones that focus on regions, historical events, wars, and people.
I know I'm missing books, but I was sent a lot of recs in private messages I can't track down. Generally if you see a book by these three authors they are the #1 recommended resource from everyone I've spoken with.
C.A. Weslager
Anthony F.C. Wallace
Paul A. W. Wallace
Some of these books are very old so they'll have dated terminology, be out of print, and can be expensive (Red Men on the Brandywine goes for over $200) so I have not been able to read everything on this list. I know there are more than a few with ebooks available through libraries, and some ebooks. My goal is to one day have all these books as PDFs, even if I have to buy and scan them myself.

To Be Continued....
Will do:
The best that I can with what is asked! I’ll even write for super old or niche media as well if I know it; asking would probably be the best option though :)
Will not do:
To sum up: anything offensive or that is morally wrong. If you aren’t sure about something, just ask! I’m down to answer questions! :)

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration 2015 — VoicePlay live performances
Starting in 2010, Disney World hosted annual gatherings of bloggers that served as a combination of networking opportunities for attendees and promotional events for Disney's resorts. Each year, a couple hundred moms who were active on various social media platforms were invited to bring their families to the park for a long weekend (at a significant discount), connect with each other, and experience the amenities. The 2015 SMMC event took place over Mother's Day weekend, and on their special day, they were treated to a lively performance by VoicePlay.

Parents of young kids are used to their children watching the same movies over and over. But what if you could get the whole story of an animated feature in a fraction of the time? And what if it was sung and acted out for you by five goofy dudes? Well, then you'd get this.

arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 10 May 2015
My favorite bits:
"I'll give you a hint: it's Rapunzel." "I love this story!"
newly beardy Earl playing the ingenue heroine
Eli touching his freshly shaved noggin on the final ♫ "brush my hair" ♫
Tony going full gaslight-girlboss during "Mother Knows Best"
"You're embarrassing me." 😒
Layne being cast as the first of many animal sidekicks to come, but at least getting some scritches during "I've Got A Dream" 🐴
Geoff replying to being stabbed with a mild "Ooh, that really hurts," then continuing to sing his part while lying on the floor
"Hey, quit horsing around!" Deploying dad jokes at the event for moms before any of them were actually dads.
a lovely final section of pure singing
Trivia:
VoicePlay later included songs from Tangled in two videos from their "Aca Top 10" series. An excerpt from "When Will My Life Begin?" was in their "Disney Heroes" countdown, and "Mother Knows Best" was part of "Disney Villains".
"You'll Be In My Heart" from Tarzan was also part of the the "Aca Top 10 — Disney Heroes" video.
Rapunzel and Mother Gothel have more recently appeared in PattyCake's "Princess Academy" and "Villains Lair" series, respectively.

Performing at Disney World provided a perfect opportunity for the guys to bust out their celebration of the company's Broadway adaptations in a live setting. Especially since the event was partly a promotion for the various Disney travel destinations.

arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 10 May 2015
My favorite bits:
Tony and Earl looking like a little gossipy clique in the corner
everyone turning toward Layne to appreciate his first percussion riff
♫ "with quite so little hair" ♫ Wait, that's backwards.
the reverb on Earl's "Roar!" (Good job, Paul.)
Geoff's growl as he hands the lead back to Eli
Layne pulling off that super fast patter live, and Eli taking over the beatboxing while he does it
that big finish
Trivia:
VoicePlay originally created this mashup medley as part of Disney On Broadway's 20th anniversary celebration.
I'm not sure why Eli sang "A Whole New World" instead of Tony on this occasion. It could be that months of touring followed almost immediately by a cruise had left Tony feeling not quite up to belting those big notes on that day.

Any group of people on a long car ride can get on each other's nerves, be it a family with parents and children, or a touring vocal quintet (who are basically a bunch of big kids). And this number is always a hit with audiences of all ages.

My favorite bits:
the gently animated backdrop
Tony taking a selfie while Earl desperately tries to get Layne to let him in the car
the little "gotta wake up" noises Eli makes
the front seat getting weirdly intense about Enya
♫ "We'll get WILD, wild, okay." ♫
Earl shouting the first "Rock!" with such power, then mumbilng the second with his head tipped so far back and away from the mic
Tony putting his finger so close to Eli's face that he bats it away (As a fellow glasses wearer, I understand that instinct.)
the camera being at the right angle to show Earl letting one go several seconds before the other guys react
Eli and Tony continuing to silently bicker, even from the far corners of the stage
Geoff and Layne leaning away from Earl's extra-long hairspraying
both Earl and Eli asking to change to station one last time, only to be rebuffed
Trivia:
VoicePlay made a professionally filmed version of this medley / skit during the 2014 Sing-Off tour.

I Really Love My Family! (My MtF~HRT Journey)
So, it has been 38 days since I left all that I knew back in Olalla to live a new life with a family that showed me much love and compassion...love and compassion that I only found in my fictional writings. I never thought it be possible, but as all the life events came in streaming I together, I found grace with the Messinger Family!
Honestly, the move scared me! I took only 20% of my life to Mason County, leaving the rest behind as I wanted a new start...a new identity and did not want to carry the baggage of my old life to their home.
I wanted the live of David Joseph to be simply over!
For a long while, I thought there could be a life for both David and Mira, but I was only doing that to save my skin from the fear of the unknown!
When I moved into my new home, I felt...out of place. They said this was my home, but I still felt like a guess. I did my part nevertheless, washed dishes, cleaned the living room, swept, mowed, landscaped, laundry and other odd-end jobs...not because I was obligated...but because it comforted me. This was what I always had to do back in Olalla...including fixing meals, taking care of 5 acres and maintaining the inside of my home with three people making it filthy with no care. It was no wonder why my health was failing. I was living in my own ‘Series of Unfortunate Events’ novel!
My first week was simply just trying to get sorted. One thing that I learned was that nothing much got done outside...this was why it was a jungle here! And I understand why: Michelle comes home too late and works hard to pay the bills along with Mitch, who comes home after pulling an early morning shift. The children are just lazy and don’t know labor...and I liked it! The property was a blank canvas! And I could dream!
By the second week it was preparing for my new transgender life as I prepared for my appointment with Dr. Worth and continued to put stuff away. When you have end stage lung disease...getting anything done is nearly impossible!
The third week was preparing for the cystic fibrosis walk and surgery talk for my port placement which took up much of my free time as I entertained my Uncle John and Aunt Julie.
By week four, I was totally settled in and buying stuff for my room and the house as I was going at ease and suffering from terrible case of homesickness. Surgery was being planned and then at the end of the forth week, my surgery was derailed and by week five (the week I am writing this post); I went into surgery and then came down sick and spent much of week five in the hospital.
As I considered this post, I could not believe it was already 38 days and so on the 29th day, I returned home for a visit and came back on the 30th day to mow the lawn as my absence was widely noticed! My beautiful manicured flower beds and lawns were a jungle...debris everywhere. Plants dying of thirst and water pipes needing repair. Even though they would not admit it, without my presence, the place was falling apart...and in a day, I made it beautiful and thought to myself ‘You know Mira, if they accept you as female and as Mira...this might throw a monkey rench into my prediction and it may hurt my decisions to change my full name’, but being dedicated to the cause has prevailed me forward.
Over the five weeks, my family of four have been all adjusting at their own pace as it takes time to adjust to me being female and named Mira. My dad, Mitch, seems to be adjusting the slowest as he isn’t certain. On day one of my new life he said I should call myself Martha...I don’t like Martha! Then he adjusted to calling me just David 90% of the time and then DMC (because it is a band’s name). Just calling me Mira is a struggle...but thank the lord that he approves my middle name of Carleen as it was his daughter’s middle name and has given it to me. Because of my philosophy, I don’t correct him and smile when he calls me DMC as it still has Mira Carleen in it!
As for my mother, Michelle, she is eager to have me as her second daughter! And freely calls Mira 40% of the time and daughter roughly 60% of the time. She is eager to be there with me as I have my surgeries and encourages my life as Mira. This has caused me to bond with her easier as she was the first I called mom and usually talk to first. She helps me adjust to female hygiene, clothes and is slowly opening to the more essentials like helping with my post surgeries. However, it is her daughter who will usher me into appearing as female...
My sister, whom I adore...Lexie seems to have bonded to me not as her brother, but sister as she freely calls me her sister and tells her friends. As is highly transgender friendly and helps me with teenager fashion tips like makeup, bras, underwear (guess they are called panties) and clothing to accentuate my breast and hips. She does not want me to cut my hair, and talks about designing it. Once my surgeries are over, she is trying to convince my mom to take us shopping to get a wardrobe as a coming out gift and welcomes me to ‘girls days out’. Like I said, very happy...and I am too! Oddly, I never liked sports, playing with boy-toys, violence or horse-playing. Instead, I like shopping, parenting, nursing (health field) and the arts. Now, I not going to say every person who is transgender is like this, but it was unique for me.
However, it is the small things like the image above! This is a Netflix user panel, and without asking, my mom put my name there...Mira...and my heart warmed! I love my family! They are trying, but love me nevertheless!

WEST COUNTRY ORGAN DONORS HONOURED FOR SAVING LIFES - People who saved lives through the gift of organ donation have been posthumously honoured at a moving award ceremony in Devon. They received the Order of St John Award for Organ Donation, run in conjunction with NHS Blood and Transplant, which was given to their families and loved ones on their behalf. The private award ceremony was held at the Sandy Park Conference and Banqueting Centre, Sandy Park Way, Exeter, on 17th October 2022, honouring nine donors – two from Cornwall and seven from Devon. Thousands of families are receiving the award across the UK this year, at regional ceremonies or privately. More than 4,000 people donated their organs after death in 2019, 2020 and 2021, leading to around 10,000 patients' lives being saved or transformed over those three years*. Mick Messinger, Chancellor of the Priory of England and the Islands of the Order of St John, said: “We’re delighted to be able to work with NHS Blood and Transplant to run the Order of St John Awards for Organ Donation again. It is so important to recognise all organ donors and it is an inspiration to meet the families attending the ceremonies. Organ donation saves lives, and it is a genuine privilege to be able to say thank you to these families, whose loved ones have had such an impact on others.” Organ donation is a most precious gift and even though the law around organ donation has changed to an opt out system, it is important that people know that families will still be consulted. It is still just as important as ever to register your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and let you family know what you want to happen. ISLE OF THE DEAD The burial ground I'm most likely to be barred from visiting is this, where the overflowing Button Brook creates a moat around Ricketson Cemetery. It's more of a lake today, surrounding all sides. But she's planted on high ground, safe from watery forces, but not the groundhogs intent on tunnelling under. Their work serves to make the surface uneasy, siding down what once stood straight to sideways stories. Sinkhole graves and twisting warrens, filling in with frost and groundwater. I helped clear her off a few years back, came with my parents and the neighbours to fell some trees in threat of snapping stones. For years, this was one of only a handful of abandoned cemeteries I knew, obvious from the roadside, most of her cousins more buried in the brush. The tale begins with John Messinger, sunk in 1832, and ends when John Piggott got his massive granite stone in 1912. They were both old men by contemporary standards, but there were plenty of young ones between. All that slips past when the weather gets wild, talking up a present with no interest in what was. This little isle of the dead draws no notice from those with flooded basements. February 18, 2022 Carleton Corner, Nova Scotia Year 15, Day 5213 of my daily journal.
