THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT JOHN EUDES Feast Day: August 19
"Let us therefore give ourselves to God with a great desire to begin to live thus, and beg Him to destroy in us the life of the world of sin, and to establish His life within us."
How little we know where God’s grace will lead. Born on a farm in northern France, John died at 78 in the next 'county' or department. In that time, he was a religious, a parish missionary, founder of two religious communities, and a great promoter of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
John joined the religious community of the Oratorians and was ordained a priest at 24. During severe plagues in 1627 and 1631, he volunteered to care for the stricken in his own diocese. Lest he infect his fellow religious, during the plague he lived in a huge cask in the middle of a field.
At age 32, John became a parish missionary. His gifts as a preacher and confessor won him great popularity. He preached over 100 parish missions, some lasting from several weeks to several months.
In his concern with the spiritual improvement of the clergy, John realized that the greatest need was for seminaries. He had permission from his general superior, the bishop, and even Cardinal Richelieu to begin this work, but the succeeding general superior disapproved. After prayer and counsel, John decided it was best to leave the religious community.
That same year John founded a new community, ultimately called the Eudists—the Congregation of Jesus and Mary–devoted to the formation of the clergy by conducting diocesan seminaries. The new venture, while approved by individual bishops, met with immediate opposition, especially from Jansenists and some of his former associates. John founded several seminaries in Normandy, but was unable to get approval from Rome—partly, it was said, because he did not use the most tactful approach.
In his parish mission work, John was disturbed by the sad condition of prostitutes who sought to escape their miserable life. Temporary shelters were found, but arrangements were not satisfactory. A certain Madeleine Lamy, who had cared for several of the women, one day said to him: 'Where are you off to now? To some church, I suppose, where you'll gaze at the images and think yourself pious. And all the time what is really wanted of you is a decent house for these poor creatures.'
The words, and the laughter of those present, struck deeply within him. The result was another new religious community, called the Sisters of Charity of the Refuge.
John Eudes is probably best known for the central theme of his writings: Jesus as the source of holiness; Mary as the model of the Christian life. His devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the Immaculate Heart led Pope Pius XI to declare him the father of the liturgical cult of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

“Undertake courageously great tasks for God’s glory, to the extent that he’ll give you power and grace for this purpose. Even though you can do nothing on your own, you can do all things in him. His help will never fail you if you have confidence in his goodness. Place your entire physical and spiritual welfare in his hands. Abandon to the fatherly concern of his divine providence every care for your health, reputation, property, and business; for those near to you; for your past sins; for your soul’s progress in virtue and love of him; for your life, death, and especially your salvation and eternity—in a word, all your cares. Rest in the assurance that in his pure goodness, he’ll watch with particular tenderness over all your responsibilities and cares, arranging all things for the greatest good.”

SAINT OF THE DAY (August 19)
St. John Eudes was a French missionary and the founder of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity.
He was also the author of the liturgical worship of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
John was born on 14 November 1601 at Ri, France. At the age of fourteen, he took a vow of chastity and tried to live in imitation of the Lord Jesus ever since.
When he was ordained a priest in 1625 at the age of 24, he was immmediately thrust into the service of victims of the plague, whom he cared for at great risk to his own life.
He also began preaching missions and was known as the greatest preacher of his age, preaching missions all over France, especially throughout Normandy.
In 1641, he founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge to provide a refuge for prostitutes.
In 1643, he founded the Society of Jesus and Mary for the education of priests and for missionary work.
He was also instrumental in encouraging devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Heart of Mary, writing the first book ever on the devotion to the Sacred Hearts, "Le Coeur Admirable de la Très Sainte Mère de Dieu."
He died on 19 August 1680 at Caen.
His virtues were declared heroic by Leo XIII on 6 January 1903.
He was beatified by Pope Pius X on 25 April 1909. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI on 31 May 1925.
John Eudes is probably best known for the central theme of his writings: Jesus as the source of holiness; Mary as the model of the Christian life.
His devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the Immaculate Heart led Pope Pius XI to declare him the "Father of the Liturgical Cult of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary."
Pope Benedict XVI, in his General Audience catechesis on 19 August 2009, praised Eudes as a "tireless apostle of the devotion of the Sacred Hearts," noting that Eudes was an example for priests during the Year for Priests.
The Pope went on to describe Eudes' "apostolic zeal" in the formation of seminarians into priests as well as the fact that Eudes was a model for evangelization and witness to the "love for Christ's Heart and Mary's Heart."

19th August >> Mass Readings (Except USA)
Monday, Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time
or
Saint John Eudes, Priest.
Monday, Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Green. Year: B(II))
First Reading Ezekiel 24:15-24 The Lord will profane his sanctuary.
The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows, ‘Son of man, I am about to deprive you suddenly of the delight of your eyes. But you are not to lament, not to weep, not to let your tears run down. Groan in silence, do not go into mourning for the dead, knot your turban round your head, put your sandals on your feet, do not cover your beard, do not eat common bread.’ I told this to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening, and the next morning I did as I had been ordered. The people then said to me, ‘Are you not going to explain what meaning these actions have for us?’ I replied, ‘The word of the Lord has been addressed to me as follows, “Say to the House of Israel: The Lord says this. I am about to profane my sanctuary, the pride of your strength, the delight of your eyes, the passion of your souls. Those of your sons and daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword. And you are to do as I have done; you must not cover your beards or eat common bread; you must keep your turbans on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you must not lament or weep. You shall waste away owing to your sins and groan among yourselves. Ezekiel is to be a sign for you. You are to do just as he has done. And when this happens, you will learn that I am the Lord.”’
Responsorial Psalm Deuteronomy 32:18-21
R/ You forget the God who fathered you.
You forget the Rock who begot you, unmindful now of the God who fathered you. The Lord has seen this, and in his anger cast off his sons and his daughters.
R/ You forget the God who fathered you.
‘I shall hide my face from them,’ he says ‘and see what becomes of them. For they are a deceitful brood, children with no loyalty in them.
R/ You forget the God who fathered you.
‘They have roused me to jealousy with what is no god, they have angered me with their beings of nothing; I, then, will rouse them to jealousy with what is no people, I will anger them with an empty-headed nation.’
R/ You forget the God who fathered you.
Gospel Acclamation Psalm 118:34
Alleluia, alleluia! Train me, Lord, to observe your law, to keep it with my heart. Alleluia!
Or: Matthew 5:3
Alleluia, alleluia! How happy are the poor in spirit: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 19:16-22 If you wish to be perfect, go and sell what you own
There was a man who came to Jesus and asked, ‘Master, what good deed must I do to possess eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one alone who is good. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ He said, ‘Which?’ ‘These:’ Jesus replied ‘You must not kill. You must not commit adultery. You must not bring false witness. Honour your father and mother, and: you must love your neighbour as yourself.’ The young man said to him, ‘I have kept all these. What more do I need to do?’ Jesus said, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ But when the young man heard these words he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Monday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading Ephesians 3:14-19 May Christ live in your hearts through faith.
I pray, kneeling before the Father, from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes its name: Out of his infinite glory, may he give you the power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong, so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on love, you will with all the saints have strength to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; until, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond all knowledge, you are filled with the utter fullness of God.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 130(131)
R/ Keep my soul in peace before you, O Lord.
O Lord, my heart is not proud nor haughty my eyes. I have not gone after things too great nor marvels beyond me.
R/ Keep my soul in peace before you, O Lord.
Truly I have set my soul in silence and peace. A weaned child on its mother’s breast, even so is my soul.
R/ Keep my soul in peace before you, O Lord.
O Israel, hope in the Lord both now and forever.
R/ Keep my soul in peace before you, O Lord.
Gospel Acclamation Matthew 11:25
Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children. Alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 11:25-30 You have hidden these things from the wise and revealed them to little children.
Jesus exclaimed, ‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS Feast Day: Third Friday after Pentecost
"Through you My divine Heart wishes to spread its love everywhere on earth." -Our Lord's words to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
The feast is celebrated every year on the Friday that follows the second Sunday after Pentecost, which is also the Friday after the former Octave of Corpus Christi. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a most beautiful sign of gratitude for his redeeming love.
It is founded on the passage from the Holy Gospel according to John: 'One soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.'
The blood and water are the symbol of the sacraments of the church, as well of Jesus' human and divine love, which is poured out for the salvation of men.
St. John Eudes, who, in 1670, published a book entitled 'The Devotion to the Adorable Heart of Jesus', is considered the initiator of the liturgical cult of the Sacred Heart.
Another great apostle of the Sacred Heart was St. Mary Margaret Alacoque.
On December 27, 1673, as she was in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lord appeared to her in a visible way, and inflamed her heart with his divine love. Jesus invited her to offer sacrifices in reparation for the offenses inflicted his Sacred Heart.
In 1675, after the Feast of Corpus Christi, Jesus said to her: 'Behold the heart which has so much loved men that it has spared nothing. Instead of gratitude, I received from most only indifference, irreverence, and sacrilege.'
This was done by receiving communion on the First Friday's of each month; by an hour vigil every Thursday night in memory of his Agony in Gethsemane; and by celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart every year.
In 1856, Pope Pius IX extended the feast to the Universal Church.
