This is an original press photo. John Brendan Kelly, Sr., also known as Jack Kelly, (October 4, 1889, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - June 20, 1960) was one of the most accomplished American oarsmen in the history of the sport of rowing. He was a triple Olympic Gold Medal winner, the first to do so in the sport of rowing. He won 126 straight races in the single scull (1x). He was the father of Grace Kelly, actress and Princess of Monaco (thus grandfather of Albert II, Prince of Monaco), and of John B. Kelly, Jr., an accomplished oarsman in his own right. At the time he won his races, rowing was at the height of its popularity. Kelly’s exploits were well covered in newsprint. In many ways, he was a figure comparable to Babe Ruth or Jack Dempsey. Photo is dated 10-10-1954.

#OTD in 1916 – Birth of John Herbert ‘Jackie’ Gleason in Brooklyn, NY.
‘It wasn’t an act of God, it was an act of Guinness’. –Jackie Gleason on Brendan Behan Gleason, nicknamed ‘The Great One’, was known for his brash visual and verbal comedy style. His parents were Mae ‘Maisie’ (née Kelly), from Farranree, Co Cork, and Herbert Walton ‘Herb’ Gleason, an Irish-American insurance auditor. He was in such movies as ‘The Hustler’, ‘Requiem for a Heavyweight’, ‘Skidoo’,…

actually has anyone ever compared the sexual politics of Encino Man & Weird Science or am i alone in wanting to write 30000 words about this
smthg about how both movies fretfully wring their hands over the effeminacy of their adolescent boy protagonists, which is understood to be not only personally humiliating but societally corrosive
order is ultimately restored through the boys' exposure to the ideal masculine subject (stone age caveman) or the ideal feminine object (digital age sex doll)
two sex symbols who, by virtue of their being suddenly thrust into the world of high school as fully formed adults (or, as outsiders to late 20th century culture/civilization), are uniquely able to secure their young charges' rightful place in the patriarchal sexual order
no longer impotently floundering in their misogynist resentment of the stupid sluts who won't fuck them, the boys have finally learned the rules of gendered subordination & domination; they have become men
their work done here, brendan fraser is reunited with his long-lost cavewoman gf for his trouble; meanwhile, kelly lebrock's reward is to be the new gym teacher for a bunch of leering children
fuck you, john hughes, you dead reaganite hack

Remedial Rewards 2022
I watched a few films in 2022 and have some opinions about which possess the best features. Like in years past, my lists mostly follow the categories (and order) of the academy awards, but this time I’ve combined a few that don’t really make sense on their own (actor/actress > performance, and best/international > best). All academy nominees are tracked in their relevant categories: nominees that didn’t make my top five or ten are recorded beneath an ellipsis and nominees that didn’t deserve to be nominated at all are found under a stroke (titles I’ve not yet seen are in italics below the category). Let me know if you are surprised by my selections. Follow the title links to read my little reviews, and follow category links for samples of the goods!

Guest host Ralph Miller III, who worked behind the scenes on Dream Warriors provides insights and many effects development photos that are shown in the YouTube version of the podcast. Post-recording, the crew wants to clarify that Kevin Yagher was responsible for the Freddy Snake, and Mark Shostrom was in charge of the Penelope Sudrow dummy that smashes into the Freddyvision TV.
With the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), following the critical failure of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), New line Cinema firmly cemented Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street as one of the most iconic horror franchises of its time. Not only does Dream Warriors feature Robert Englund continuing to breathe both humor and fear into Freddy Krueger but also the return of both Heather Langenkamp and John Saxon from the original. The film also features Craig Wasson (Ghost Story) as the male lead and early film roles for Patricia Arquette and Larry Fishburne. Frank Darabont (The Mist) and Bruce Wagner join Wes Craven on scripting chores and Chuck Russell (The Blob, The Mask) directs while Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) provides the score – a winning combination of talent. Surely a Grue-Crew highly recommended selection with special effects by Greg Cannom, Doug Beswick, Mark Shostrom, Kevin Yagher, and more!
Be sure to check out the first time the 80s Grue-Crew took a dive into this film in February 2017, featuring Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, and Thomas Mariani as the Grue-Crew. You can find it here: A NIGHTMARE ON ELMS STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987) — Episode 102
