HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Richard Attenborough, Ingrid Bergman, my cousin-in-law Janice Brenneman, Kyle Cook (Matchbox 20), Chris Copping (Procol Harum), Reuben Councill, Charles Finney, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Diamanda Galás, Elliott Gould, Carla Gugino, Dick Halligan, Fred Holland, Michael Jackson, Nathan Ernie Lashlee, David Lim, John Locke, Tony MacAlpine, Bennie Maupin, John McCain, Sterling Morrison, Me'Shell Ndegéocello, Oasis 1994 DEFINITELY MAYBE album, Mao Oz, Wilhelm Hieronymus Pachelbel, Charlie Parker, Liam Payne (One Direction), Pebbles, Iggy Pop’s 1977 LUST FOR LIFE album, Cliff Richard’s 1958 “Move It!” single, Vivien Thomas, Consuelo Velázquez, Vishal, Dinah Washington, and my friend and early career mentor, composer-keyboardist-trombonist-vocalist Bob Hogins. He made his mark in the 1970s San Francisco music scene, most visibly with Harvey Mandel, Buddy Miles, and Santana. I met Bob after he’d turned his life over to God and devoted himself to classical and contemporary Christian music projects. He compelled me to up my game in musical discipline and expand myself as a bassist and singer.
From 1981-87 I played with Bob almost weekly in an eclectic church worship group. We fanned out into recording, pop-rock musicals, and playing in gospel vocal groups that shared bills with Zoe, a Grateful Dead spin-off w/Donna Godchaux and David MacKay (Ark, Michael Nesmith). As I worked with Bob in various projects, he introduced me to Buddy Miles, Pat Craig (Tazmanian Devils), Frank Souza, Marcus Uzilevsky, and other talents who’d affect my career in varying degrees. I feel indebted to Bob as a talented, warm-hearted musician, and great teacher.
Regrettably I do not have at hand any recordings of work Bob and I did, but here’s one of my favorite tracks that Bob played some sizzling organ on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_tgfWBHdig ...Meanwhile, HB BH and thank you for your amazing contributions to all of us.

I know I’ve posted links to these pages before, but not for many months, and I’m now using them again and really need to reiterate how awesome this is. Obviously, a podcast like The Bugle is going to have a fanbase full of the type of people who would go through every episode and catalogue the hell out of it. Obviously. Obviously this exists.
Both those links look like the same thing, but they’re different pages. One is a properly organized list of the first 193 episodes, going through each section of most episodes and noting what was discussed, and listing instances of the various running jokes, motifs, features, recurring characters, etc. The other is a disorganized mess that, for each episode up to 146, lists some key phrases and topics. It is so helpful. It looks like a mess at first, but it’s amazingly helpful that if I vaguely remember some joke or other that was made in any of the first 193 episodes, I can CTRL+F for it on that page, and I will probably find it. Not quite 100% of the time, obviously, but this page has come through for me more often than it’s let me down, when I recall some offhand comment Andy Zaltzman made sometime around 2009 but I don’t know its context, and I check this page for it, and there it is. It’s fucking great.
It’s the sort of thing I’d make, but I don’t have to, because it turns out I fit so perfectly into the demographic of Bugle fans (autistic, the word I’m looking for is autistic) that the other ones are just like me and they beat me to it. It was incredibly helpful when I was making Bugle compilations last year, which I maintain were an excellent use of my time, even the one the ended up being the length, and arguably breadth, of a feature film (it’s the one about John Oliver and Sarah Palin, it was supposed to just be a short audio compilation but it’s 74 minutes long and features enough photos and video to count as a documentary).
Aside from how helpful they are, it’s just really entertaining to read the thrown-together lists of “things that happened in this episode” out of context. The properly organized list is great, but the one that’s an unformatted mess has a charm I hugely enjoy, and creates some amusing out-of-context summaries. To grab a few at random:
37 21/7/08 Obama an the media Dr love/The Slaying of Nigel Obama/VP ideas/Europe loves Obama/ Andy describes badgers/Crazy Belgians/Stalin&Rasputin leading best Russian pole/Warmonger cowboy fancy drees/Batgirl is jewish/HFH: Gulveg the Norse giantess
56 15/12/08 Riggles leaving do/lettuce or fairy wings/Blagoiavic corruption/Obamas 1stspeech Old McDonald/Michael stone claims his attack was art/OJ giving birth/Neither Obama or McCain are eligable to be president/Canada in shambles/Plans to cut down smoking/Names for Andys child/British sportsman of the year/Scottish tennis, "Foot fault f*ck you"
109 29/3/10 US healthcare bill a big fucking deal/Death threat on Twitter/Bullet falls through Eric Cantors window/US Israel settlements talk/British MP's cabs for hire/The American on healthcare & National treasure, thinks he's on the radio, guns in Starbucks/Flipping Vanilla Ice the Bird/Roll call of donors
115 17/5/10 Britains Coalition Gov./UK has only 1 more Female MP than Afganistan/Berlusconnis divorce terms/Grecian economy is fucked/Phillies fan tazered
127 20/9/10 Pope in UK/$80 million to keep tigers alive $50 million given/Tea Pary wins midterms/Christine O'Donnel... hates masturbation, is a witch, cross breeding animals/Sport of shinti
131 18/10/10 John beats Riggle at fantasy football, Riggle threatens to kill him/Sporty Pussycat Doll/Bugles 3rd Birthday/Andy is drunk/Chilean miners get out/Someone throws book at Obama
Fucking excellent. Someone scribbled all these notes and put them on the internet so that ten years later I could easily look up in what episode American comedian Rob Riggle threatened to murder John Oliver. Thank you for your service, whoever made this. This is what the internet should be for.

I love how both liberals and conservatives think I'm with the other side.
Technically, I am.
I gave my soul to the Democratic party in 1992, I was 9 and the GOP's treatment of the AIDS epidemic sickened me.
In 2001, I turned 18, I went to vote in my first gubernatorial primary, and in Illinois, you have to declare a party to get only their ballot. So since 2001, I have been a registered member of the Republican Party of the state of Illinois, because there were 3 Republicans running for governor and two of them wanted complete bans on abortions with zero exceptions and I wanted to vote against them. The primaries I wanted to vote for a specific Democrat in I lived in a different state that I did not need to declare. So if you look on my voter registration card it says registered Republican to this day.
I have voted for candidates of both parties -- my first job in politics was collecting signatures to get a Republican on the ballot and then primary campaigning for him for a judgeship. I met the man when I responded to his ad, I asked him more thorough questions than the GOP asked Brett Kavanaugh or Amy Coney Barrettt, and determined we were in agreement as to the role of judges in the judicial process, out interpretation of the law, and overall stances on factors in sentencing. He was a Republican and I'm happy to report he has been a judge for 20 years and never given me cause to regret working for him as he has been exemplary.
My second job was working for the Obama campaign when he was a no chance in hell candidate in 2008, because I'd met him on my 21st birthday at a 2004 campaign rally he did not have to do -- it was the middle of nowhere district, he was unopposed, and poling with 90% approval. He and Senator Durbin, who I think has been a solid workhorse of a Senator for decades with none of the recognition he deserves, did a bus tour to all the parts of the state that no one goes to because there aren't enough voters there (in this case especially for Democrats, as the county voted red from the Civil War to 2008) since he had the luxury of not having to fight just to meet the people and talk to them. While I think there were a lot of missed opportunities in the Obama administration, I never regretted working or voting for him -- despite the fact that I felt both of John McCain and Mitt Romney had the potential to be good presidents (their campaigns sucked pulling them to pander to the base, but looking at their records in the Senate and Massachusetts respectively, there was some good work there and I could have voted for either against some Democrats very happily.)
I have voted against Democrats such as Rod Blagojevich who were too corrupt to be allowed in office even in Illinois, where we have a high tolerance for corruption.
So if you think I'm on a partisan side just for the sake of color preference, you're factually incorrect. I'm on the side of effectiveness over performance points, of democracy and the Constitution.
Please adjust your death threats accordingly.

History
August 4, 1962 - Apartheid opponent Nelson Mandela was arrested by security police in South Africa. He was then tried and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1964, he was placed on trial for sabotage, high treason and conspiracy to overthrow the government and was sentenced to life in prison. A worldwide campaign to free him began in the 1980s and resulted in his release on February 11, 1990, at age 71 after 27 years in prison. In 1993, Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize with South Africa's President F.W. de Klerk for their peaceful efforts to bring a nonracial democracy to South Africa. In April 1994, black South Africans voted for the first time in an election that brought Mandela the presidency of South Africa.
August 4, 1964 - Three young civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were found murdered and buried in an earthen dam outside Philadelphia, Mississippi. They had disappeared on June 21 after being detained by Neshoba County police on charges of speeding. They were participating in the Mississippi Summer Project organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to increase black voter registration. When their car was found burned on June 23, President Lyndon Johnson ordered the FBI to search for the men.
Birthday - Jazz trumpet player Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Known as "Satchmo," he appeared in many films and is best known for his renditions of It's a Wonderful World and Hello, Dolly.
Birthday - Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg (1912-1947) was born in Stockholm. During the Holocaust, Wallenberg saved an estimated 33,000 Jews by issuing thousands of protective documents, by securing the release of Jews from deportation trains, death march convoys, labor service brigades, and by establishing the International Ghetto, a network of 31 protected houses. He was detained by Soviet agents on January 17, 1945, and is believed to have died in prison in 1947.
Birthday - Barack Obama the 44th U.S. President was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961. His father was from Kenya, Africa, while his mother was originally from Kansas. Upon completing his college education, young Obama moved to Chicago, becoming active in community affairs. He then attended Harvard Law School, becoming the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review in 1990. He returned to Chicago, worked in a law firm, then entered politics. Elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996, he went on to become a U.S. Senator in 2004. Four years later, he successfully challenged former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination and went on to defeat Republican John McCain in the general election, November 4, 2008, thus becoming the first President of African-American origin.

On this date in music history….
July 20th
2021 - Chuck E. Weiss
American songwriter and vocalist Chuck E. Weiss died from cancer age 76. Weiss was the subject of Rickie Lee Jones's hit song ‘Chuck E.'s In Love’, from her 1979 debut album. At the time, Jones was linked romantically to Tom Waits. All three lived in the Tropicana Hotel in Los Angeles.
2009 - Jackson Browne
Jackson Browne settled his lawsuit against US Senator John McCain and the Republican Party after his 1977 hit 'Running On Empty' was used without permission in a 2008 McCain presidential campaign ad that aired on TV and the Internet. McCain and the Republican Party apologized for using the song in the ad and said that McCain himself "had no knowledge of, or involvement in, the creation or distribution of the video."
1986 - Carlos Santana
Carlos Santana celebrated his 39th birthday, and 20th anniversary in the music business, with a concert in San Francisco. Previous group members were assembled for the event, as 17 of them performed together on stage.
1975 - Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played the opening night on their Born To Run Tour at The Palace Theatre, Providence, Rhode Island. This also saw the live debut of Steven Van Zandt, (Miami Steve) as a member of The E Street Band.
1971 - Carpenters
The Carpenters show 'Make Your Own Kind Of Music', started a six week run on NBC-TV.
1968 - Paul McCartney
Jane Asher announced on the national British TV show, Dee Time, that her engagement to Paul McCartney was off. Paul reportedly was watching at a friend's home and was surprised by the news. She was said to have inspired many of McCartney's songs, such as 'All My Loving', 'And I Love Her', and 'We Can Work It Out'. Jane went on to have a career in films and television as well as becoming a successful author and business woman.
1968 - Cream
Cream started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Wheels Of Fire'. The double album which consisted of a studio and a live record reached No.3 in the United Kingdom.
1968 - Iron Butterfly
Iron Butterfly's second album, 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida', entered the US album chart for the first time. The album contained the 17-minute title track that filled the second side of the LP which went on sell over four million copies in the US alone.
1965 - Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan released 'Like A Rolling Stone.' At 6:13, it was twice as long as the average pop song, but it nonetheless becomes Dylan's first big hit. Its confrontational lyrics originated in an extended piece of verse Dylan wrote in June 1965, when he returned exhausted from a grueling tour of England. 'Like A Rolling Stone' peaked at No.2 on the US chart and No.4 in the UK.
1963 - Brian Wilson
Jan and Dean started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Surf City', written by The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, with the Beach Boys on backing vocals. The single peaked at No.26 in the UK.
1954 - Elvis Presley
The Blue Moon Boys made their live debut appearing on the back of a flatbed truck outside a new drug store for its grand opening in Memphis. The band line up was Elvis Presley Scotty Moore and Bill Black. The name was taken from a song they had recorded just two weeks previously, 'Blue Moon of Kentucky.'
1940 - Billboard
Billboard's first comprehensive record chart was published. The magazine had previously published best-seller lists submitted by the individual record companies, but the new chart combined the top sellers from all major labels. Their first number one song was ‘I'll Never Smile Again’ by Frank Sinatra and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

World Building: Jimmy Replay Universe
This is one of the more realistic universes where magic doesn’t really exist and humans are the only sapient species. This universe contains time travel, and covers the time period from September 6th of 1925 to December 30th of 2009.
When Jimmy Reed dies on August 29th of 1976, he is reborn on September 6th of 1925 - and, at the age of 20, he gains his past life memories from his original timeline. His life before then is mostly the same as in the original timeline, other than sensing an occasional déjà vu and making minor changes.
When The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold (Jimmy Sullivan) dies on December 30th of 2009, he is also reborn on February 9th of 1981. On his 20th birthday, he remembers his past life in the old timeline.
Jimmy Sullivan’s experience is different than that of Jimmy Reed. He recalls that, in the original timeline, Jimmy Reed died in 1976 and was reincarnated as his identical grandson (albeit with green eyes) on September 6th of 1977.
Jimmy Reed recalls the death of John F Kennedy on November 22nd of 1963, and he sets up Lee Harvey Oswald to be arrested a week before the would-be assassination of the then president. As such, politics take a slightly different turn. The US government keep JFK under protection, until they can set up a Secret Services agency to protect the sitting president.
John F Kennedy serves until 1968. The 1968 elections are between Lyndon B Johnson and Richard Nixon. Jimmy Reed, vowing not to make the same mistake he made last time, votes for Lyndon B Johnson, who wins. Lyndon B Johnson serves until 1976.
There is an intense Republican race during the primaries between Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan in 1976. Ultimately, Ronald Reagan wins - and he is up against Jimmy Carter. Ronald Reagan wins the election, putting an end to the 16-year Democratic reign as POTUS.
Ronald Reagan serves from 1976 to 1984. George H W Bush serves from 1984 to 1992. Bill Clinton serves from 1992 to 2000. Al Gore runs from 2000 to 2008. For 2008, it’s Bernie Sanders against John McCain. The events leading up the election will be quite intense.
On Zacky’s 25th birthday on December 11th of 2006, he starts having dreams of the original timeline. The first dream is his combined birthday with his mother (who shares his birthday). In the new timeline, Zacky is dating a woman named Hannah McKern. In his dream, he is dating a Gena Paulhus - and is also close friends with a Canadian woman named Meaghan Doe. Zacky does not know of either Gena or Meaghan - who, in the new timeline, make up the personality of Hannah McKern. Also, Jimmy Reed exists in the form of his identical grandson and is the twin brother of Jillian (born three days later in the new timeline).
When Zacky wakes up, he opts to write the details of his dream in a dream journal. He thereafter has recurring dreams of the original timeline, frequently of his childhood in that timeline. Soon after, he decides to share his dreams with Jimmy Reed.
It turns out that The Rev had shared his experiences with Jimmy Reed, shortly after he turned 20. He felt a bit awkward about it, as he felt that Jimmy Reed was closer to Zacky than to him. From Jimmy Reed’s perspective, the original timeline ended with his death in 1976 - so he has no memories of being his identical grandson in the original timeline. Jimmy Reed, The Rev, and Zacky soon share their experiences with each other - and Zacky shares his dream journal with them.
In both timelines... Jimmy Reed was close friends with Roberto Giaccio (Zacky’s maternal grandfather), Marina Smith Giaccio (Zacky’s maternal grandmother), and Angelo Smith (Marina’s brother).
In the new timeline, M Shadows is politically conflicted in 2007 - whereas, in the original timeline, he was a red-hot Republican. Ultimately, he joins the rest of Avenged Sevenfold and Jimmy Reed in voting for Bernie Sanders in the 2008 elections - which Bernie wins!
The final dream for Zacky occurs moments after The Rev died in the original timeline, and Zacky hears the news. Zacky goes into shock, and he wakes up. He immediately calls The Rev, and learns that The Rev is still alive! By then, Zacky closes his dream journal - and he deliberates with Jimmy Reed and The Rev over whether or not they should publish it. The final decision is... wait.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Honoré de Balzac, Warren Cann (Ultravox), Cher, Kit Clarke (Danny Wilson), Joe Cocker, Susan Cowsill, Steve George (Mr. Mister), David Hedison, Nick Heyward, Guy Hoffman (BoDeans), Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Astrid Kirchherr, Shorty Long, Dolly Madison, Cindy McCain, John Stuart Mill, Timothy Olyphant, The Police’s 1983 single “Every Breath You Take,” Zbigniew Preisner, Busta Rhymes, James Stewart, Jane Weidlin, Anthony Zerbe, and my friend, the uber-talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Vee (no relation to Bobby Vee). He’s best known as a longsuffering champion of the West Coast punk scene and as front man for the legendary San Diego band Social Spit. Off that grid, we worked together in the mid-80s and I was astonished by his diverse and well-produced demo-ing of material ranging in style from rock gospel to agit-pop to folk to prog-rock. Here’s a song of mine we whipped together at a former spaghetti factory in San Francisco—a track inspired by The Alarm and T-Bone Burnett…and HB JV—thank you for your years of creative energy and your example of cutting through adversity.
