So I just read an article from a few years back about a girl whose father-figure died and she kept texting his number and telling him all about how her life was going.

Four years later a man replied and confessed he'd been reading all her texts and that he was really proud of the young woman she'd become.

It turned out his daughter had died in a car accident several years ago and the girl's texts brought him comfort.

There's a bit more to the story; his wife also died and he wasn't in a good way, but when I read it, it just felt like something Joel would have done (he also uses pet names!)

This would make for an incredible slow burn fic. What if Ellie lost her dad and started texting Joel?

Years later when Joel reveals the truth, she meets up with him and he becomes a big part of her life but Ellie keeps it a secret from her mom (Reader) for whatever reason.

When they eventually meet, they fall in love.
