So what's the deal with Morph in the comics? They seem like such a random edition in the OG animated series (even if they do wind up presumed dead almost immediately before coming back eventually and now part of the 97 cast) compared to almost anyone else on the teams in the 90s, like Iceman or Psylocke or Colossus. Like, when did Morph show up in the comics originally?
This is a little bit complicated.
Morph was created for the '92 show because the showrunners had decided that having the first X-Men character to die be John Proudstar (aka Thunderbird, the Apache mutant who was canonically the first of the "All-New X-Men" to die under the pen of Chris Claremont) would be seen as racially problematic.
However, Morph is quite similar in power set to the Changeling, a minor Silver Age ex-villain (originally named Kevin Sidney) who is probably best known for having undergone a face turn (and then promptly heroically died) in order to impersonate Professor X on one of the number of occassions when Silver Age Xavier needed to fake his death for the sake of a dramatic cover to goose declining sales. (Silver Age X-Men was not one of the commercial successes of the House of Ideas, and it's one of the few Lee/Kirby ongoings from that era to get cancelled.)
While Morph's on-screen tenure on the original '92 cartoon was quite brief, evidentally they made enough of an impression that by 1994, their character design and personality was imported back into the comics as part of the "Age of Apocalypse" event, albeit with the same human name and some of the backstory of the original comics character. Morph was a natural fit for the cartoony, anime-inspired artstyle of Joe Madureira, and they became such a fan favorite that after the end of that AU timeline, Sidney was brought back as one of the leading characters of the multiversal team the Exiles in 2001.
As a sign of how popular X-comics were back in the day, Exiles ran for *100* issues despite being an exceedingly tertiary book.

Rian Reads: X-Calibre #1
Writer: Warren Ellis Artist: Ken Lashley Inker: Tom Wegrzyn, Philip Moy & Bud LaRosa Colorist: Joe Rosas Letterer: Richard Starkings & Comicraft
Cover Date: March 1995
In the immortal words of Philip J. Fry: “Time makes fools of us all.”
That “short break” from posting X-Men reviews turned into almost 2 years in the blink of an eye, but I’m back at it now and I’ll do my best to get this Age Of Apocalypse train back on track.
X-Calibre #1 opens with a character named Switchback seemingly taking a ferry ride down the River Styx. Having never heard of Switchback before, I swallowed my X-fan pride and performed a quick Google search for her, only to discover that this comic is her first appearance. It’s tough to tell who is an original Age Of Apocalypse creation and who is a re-purposed 616 Marvel character sometimes. Anyway, on the shore Switchback is greeted by Cain (see: Juggernaut), who lives a monk-like life guiding people back and forth from the creepy ferry port to Avalon, which as far as I can tell is the AoA timeline’s stand-in for the Savage Land (but named after Magneto’s space station for some reason). In other words, it’s a tropical paradise hidden deep within the frozen Antarctic wasteland where humans and mutants still live in peace with one another because Apocalypse hasn’t been able to locate it yet.
Cutting back to the ruins of New York City, Nightcrawler (who is much more of a dick in this timeline than he is in the regular old Marvel universe) meets up with Angel at his decadent, post-apocalyptic nightclub to obtain passage of his own to Avalon where he has plans to meet up with Mystique, who is the only person who can visually identify a woman named Destiny...whom he needs to get his hands on for some reason. Nightcrawler mentions during this exchange that his “mother has, for some years, ferried refugees from her Antarctic station to the shores of Avalon.” So...does that mean that Mystique is the hooded figure operating the ferry carrying Switchback in the opening scene?
The only time we really see Mystique in this issue, she’s speaking to Magneto over some computer monitors in the very next scene. During this conversation Mystique insinuates that she doesn’t want to personally set foot on Avalon for some reason, but Magneto insists, threatening to tear off her arms and legs if she refuses (which seems a bit out of character for this righteous, Age Of Apocalypse version of Erik).
Next up, Nightcrawler arrives at an abandoned, old Stark storage facility in Manhattan where Angel had directed him to meet up with John Proudstar (aka Thunderbird) before the next leg of his journey to Avalon. Lots of weird code names are thrown around during this sequence, but from what I can deduce, Proudstar runs a church called “Ghost Dance” out of the old Stark warehouse where people pray for the fall of Apocalypse through dance. This location also serves as the departure point for an underground railroad of sorts called the “Infernal Gallop,” which shuttles refugees to Avalon in an old submarine. There’s more discussion of Mystique and what she brings to the cause before Nightcrawler (remember how I mentioned that he’s a bit of a dick in this reality?) teleports one of Proudstar’s fingers off of his body for talking trash about his mom! Between this scene and Magneto’s threats of bodily harm to Mystique, I’m thinking that Warren Ellis circa 1995 may have had a preoccupation with dismemberment.
Soon enough, Nightcrawler boards the Infernal Gallop’s submarine and departs for Avalon with a bunch of refugees, but first we are treated to a brief scene in which the New Mutants’ Danielle Moonstar delivers word of Kurt’s journey to Apocalypse, who in turn tasks another character named Damask with tracking him and locating Avalon’s location. Damask is another character I had to look up for clarity’s sake, and is apparently the Age Of Apocalypse’s incarnation of The Hellfire Club’s Black Queen (who knew?); a character I’m only vaguely familiar with anyway. Also, have I mentioned before that Apocalypse keeps a seemingly braindead Wade Wilson (Deadpool) by his side a bit like how Jabba The Hutt keeps Salacious Crumb close by?
As the issue ends, Cain escorts Switchback to meet Destiny, who has weird wrinkles where her eyes should be, and when the two touch she starts flipping out and screaming about how she can see the apocalypse. Not to be that guy, but I’m sorry, honey...the apocalypse is already here.
All-in-all I wasn’t bowled over by this issue the way I have been with a few of the other Age Of Apocalypse mini-series #1′s thus far. I appreciate the extra bit of world-building going on with the introduction of Avalon and the obnoxiously dubbed Infernal Gallop, but plot-wise I could take this issue or leave it. This is a little disappointing since this particular series is written by one of my favorite comic writers: Warren Ellis. This book does predate his golden period in comics by a few years, though. As for the art, Ken Lashley has enough of that typical, early to mid-90′s Jim Lee-inspired panache to make me feel right at home reading this title, but he doesn’t really go above and beyond in any way. That said, I did think that the watercolor-y reveal of Avalon early in the issue was a nice touch.
- R.

So, about marvel... top 3 characters and why you love them? same for otp? mcu or comics? both? also have you read Ajas/Fractions Hawkeye and if not drop everything. and DO.
Oooh good questions… Thanks, Anonny.
Let me preface this by saying I’m not a comic book expert. I never grew up with it and only got into it a few years ago.
1) Wade Wilson aka Deadpool is my absolute favourite. Joe Kelly’s run of the comics was probably the best out of all the iterations because that’s when Wade had heart. He was created as a parody of Deathstroke from Teen Titans, sure, but Joe gave him relatable human qualities. He was funny, sarcastic, as well as traumatised, scarred, insecure and self-loathing. It was very explicit that Wade had PTSD and it played out in many of his stories. Wade was also deeply insecure about how he looked. I just think as funny as he is, later reiterations of Wade often overlook that part of him. And he doesn’t flirt with every character in some misguided toxic masculinity where ‘straight’ men do it as a joke and to be dominating in a situation, but Wade is canonically pansexual so when he flirts with another character, it’s usually because he’s attracted to them. I like that about him as well.
2) Matthew Murdock aka Daredevil is a close second. He is such an iconic hero. Gritty and dark, but with a very distinct moral compass. I like that he’s more of a low-scale hero as in his story arcs almost always revolve primarily around Hell’s Kitchen because that’s his home. Not to say he doesn’t go out and do bigger than life stuff in the comics, but you know what I mean… Matty’s connection to Hell’s Kitchen is literally his most defining factor sometimes. As I’m not as well-versed in the comics for Daredevil though, I have to talk about the Netflix version. I think they did an amazing job by really grounding Matty to more human elements. He’s very real whereas, in the MCU movies, the heroes are very much extraordinary. Yeah, Matty is too, but if you watch the fight scenes, they’re choreographed so well, in the way that you can see him struggle and begin to tire.
3) Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch is also a favourite. I don’t think the MCU did Wanda justice because Wanda’s character has always been defined by her struggle with her powers and coming to terms with who she is and what she can do. She’s canonically also Magneto’s daughter and she was constantly exploited by men around her because her powers are so immense. Tbh, I need to read more Scarlet Witch comics, but from what I know, she’s infinitely more complicated and conflicted than what the MCU makes her out to be, and a lot more vulnerable. I think by killing off Pietro so early, they cut out a lot of Wanda’s development from the comics, and then cut that in half by not having Magneto be her father, but then, I don’t know. MCU’s never been great with their portrayals of women, so it’s less about what they didn’t include and more about them needing to hire female writers. But that’s another topic entirely lol.
But I would also like to say as a whole I much prefer the X-Men stories to the Avengers. I find the whole mutants storylines much more compelling. And from there, I really like Gambit and Wolverine.
And oh my god, honourable mention here, but:
4) Jean Grey aka Phoenix! What’s not to love about her? She’s one of the strongest heroes/villains in the entire Marvel universe. She’s incredibly complex and just utterly fascinating.
My favourite ships… well…
1) Spideypool – But not MCU’s Tom Holland as Spiderman. I mean in the comics when they’re older because in recent issues, Deadpool and Spiderman are just adorable. Their camraderie, Peter’s constant exasperation with Wade and Wade’s constant flirting and banter with Peter. How they still team up. Just everything about them is great.
2) Thunderblink – This is new and not comic book canon, but from Fox’s new The Gifted show about mutants. John Proudstar aka Thunderbird and Clarice Fong aka Blink have stolen my heart. Big, strong John, who is as pragmatic as he is full of heart, and sarcastic, guarded Clarice, who struggles with finding her place in the world. I am so trash for them already and it’s been 5 episodes. I just love them, okay?
3) Scarlet America – This is 1000% a crackship since I do really ship Scarlet Witch and Vision in the comics and stuff, but in the MCU-verse, I love the idea of Wanda and Steve Rogers. I think they’re similar in a lot of ways. They’ve both been experimented on and are completely displaced in their current world. And I know in the movie, Steve is supposed to care for her in an older brother kind of way, but Chris and Elizabeth just have so much great chemistry together that it comes off non-platonic. But this is a crackship so I don’t expect it to be canon. Although, Steve and Wanda do have this sexual tension in the comics that’s kind of canon! ;D
Thanks for the question!! Sorry, this is all a bit rambly. Hopefully it made sense!
EDIT: Also no I haven’t but I am looking into it now!! *_* I love me some Hawkeye tbh

Rian Reads: X-Calibre #2
Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Roger Cruz, Renato Arlem, Charles Mota & Eddie Wagner
Inker: Philip Moy, Tom Wegrzyn & Harry Candelario
Colorist: Joe Rosas & Digital Chameleon
Letterer: Richard Starkings & Comicraft
Cover Date: April 1995
For the first time in the entire Age Of Apocalypse event (to the best of my recollection) X-Calibre #2 begins with a recap page. While I’ve altogether been enjoying the crossover so far, I’m now thinking that every issue of all 8 mini-series should open with one of these. With so many characters and so many different plot-lines going on, I could certainly use a refresher from time to time. Case in point: two of the lingering questions I was left with after reading X-Calibre #1 are answered in this recap before I even get to the story itself.
1.) Mystique is indeed the one ferrying people to Avalon (see: the AoA’s version of the Savage Land).
and
2.) The reason for Magneto sending Nightcrawler to find Destiny is that Destiny’s powers allow her to see people’s futures by touching them and he wants her to reach out and touch Bishop for some reason. Rogue already proved that Bishop was telling the truth about the alternate reality he’s from when she touched him and absorbed his memories, so I’m not really sure what seeing his future will tell anyone. Who am I to question the whims of the great Magneto, though?
Getting into the issue proper, we’re treated to a brief sequence in Avalon in which Destiny touches the character Switchback from the previous issue and sees death and destruction in Avalon’s future.
Jumping to the Stark facility that Nightcrawler hitched a submarine ride to Avalon from in X-Calibre #1, John Proudstar (aka Thunderbird) makes a futile attempt to fight off some of the Madri, but ends up getting shot in the back by a hooded figure. Is his identity a mystery for some reason or is he just a random bad guy? Who knows? Also of note is that Proudstar’s finger, which Nightcrawler had teleported off of his body in the previous issue, is magically reattached.
Okay, maybe that wasn’t “of note,” but I felt like mentioning it anyway.
Moving along, the submarine that Nightcrawler is aboard begins to malfunction and all of the passengers begin to suffocate in record time, causing the captain to surface the vessel. Once on the surface, Nightcrawler teleports onto the top of the sub to get some air, and then makes himself scarce when a huge ship approaches. The ship is run by Callisto, who is the sometimes leader of the subterranean Morlocks in the regular Marvel Universe, but is just a helpful boat captain in the Age Of Apocalypse…or so it seems.
In a brief cutaway, we see Damask, Dani Moonstar and Deadpool aboard a high altitude ship of some kind tracking Nightcrawler’s progress. Damask gets a call from Apocalypse (which is illustrated with some really ugly computer renderings or something) stating that they are to destroy Avalon once they find it, then as soon as he hangs up, Damask murders Dani for some reason.
Aaaaaaanyway...once all of the submarine’s passengers are loaded aboard Callisto’s ship with the promise of a continued journey to their destination of Avalon, the crew cons everyone out of their valuables with some lamebrain line about pretending it’s their salvage haul if they’re caught, and then they’re all flushed out of a ballast tank into the ocean to drown and freeze to death. Luckily, Nightcrawler was suspicious of Callisto and company (and rightfully so!), so he’d snuck aboard without anyone knowing. He begins to take out the crew, but when confronted by Callisto, the two are descended upon by Mystique, who appears from out of nowhere, dangling from a rope ladder hanging from a flying machine.
How’s that for a cliffhanger?
This was a weird issue. I’m not sure what all of this pirate business has to do with anything aside from giving Nightcrawler a chance to attack some people with swords. How did that trend start anyway? Why does Nightcrawler always seem to have a rapier handy? Once again, this is not Warren Ellis’ best work, but Ken Lashley, who drew issue 1, is nowhere to be found. He’s replaced on this issue by Roger Cruz and 3 other guys I’ve never heard of, and anytime there are 4 artists on an issue that isn’t an anthology book, that’s a bad sign. I’m not sure whose work is whose, but the sum of all those different artistic parts is not particularly good. The whole time I was reading this issue I was wishing that I were reading one of the other, more interesting titles of the Age Of Apocalypse crossover, so without further ado, I think I’ll give this issue a rest and do just that.
- R.
