I’m a little different

I can’t say I really have this ambition to see any member of Riverdale reach rarified Hollywood air and be a film icon who headlines billion dollar franchises for decades. Even if I DID have that ambition most people will never climb that scale. I mentioned Robert Downey Jr. the other day because I remember when he made rom coms. I remember him on Ally McBeal. I remember when he went to jail. I haven’t been obsessively following his career but I liked a lot of what he filmed and ended up seeing it then with Marvel he exploded. I didn’t predict that back when making the film with Marisa Tomei.

Guess what though? He didn’t get there by “dating up” or by slandering his costars in a jealous fit of competition. Not sure what some of this fandom (or a certain mother) think they are accomplishing by trying to make people hate Cole but that isn’t necessarily the way to get ahead in a career.

Hollywood moguls will work with difficult people if they make them money, but like anyone prefer they not be difficult and not bring drama. #1 consideration though is making money. If you want to climb ahead need to show YOU are a box office draw.

People want honesty? Well maybe they don’t but I’ll give it to you. Cole has been working since he was a baby, In commercials, on Grace under Fire. Guest starred on several popular sitcoms. Featured with Adam Sandler. Featured on Friends which has gained a whole new audience. Featured on Disney for several year’s and interacted with several famous child stars during that time now stars in own fields. Now on Riverdale and was just featured on FFA which made a decent profit. You are fooling yourself if you believe he is not better known than anyone on cast. You are fooling yourself if you think association with him does not boost the notice of those with him. No, he is not as big as Robert Downey Jr (Robert wasn’t as big as he is when 27) but he IS well known especially with the 10-30 age demographic which advertisers covet. Ellen may not have immediately known him but Demi’s fanbase? They do.

Aside from fame he grew up on the camera. His castmates? Not so much. It is not an insult to factually note he probably has given ALL of them tips on blocking, acting, modeling, handling press etc...Ted who doesn’t even like him admitted as much that Cole saves scenes untold by adjusting his presence on the set. There is a reason when something happens on set he becomes de facto spokesman and they let him. Almost 3 decades spent in Hollywood gives him experience they lack. Then note his connections in photography and fashion because HE is a photographer. You really think he’s never leant anyone help in learning how to pose? Yet if you say that it’s viewed as taking away another’s accomplishments. But tell me why it is insulting to note almost a 30 yr spanning career in which Cole studied and worked hard might benefit people he costars with, is friends with or even loves? Cole earned everything he has and sacrificed a childhood for it.

Now down to specifics. It is a fool’s errand to predict who will be big 5 years from now let alone 20 in Hollywood and I won’t do it. I’ve seen people like Megan Fox burst from sitcom to a star with Transformers only to fall abruptly (admittedly there were behind scenes politics in some of that). I’ve seen Jodie Foster on bit parts in tv to Disney star to movie star to working behind the scenes in production/direction. I watched Leo on Growing Pains to where he is now. I’ve seen Keanu Reeves be viewed somewhat as a joke in the industry despite success become a beloved respected star now. I’ve seen Adam Sandler have project after project panned by critics yet continues standing in the industry and actually get invited back to SNL and be allowed a monologue crushing them. Kristen Stewart was the next big thing...until she wasn’t. Now her costar who people had written off but quietly was building a nice resume with smaller projects is set to be Batman. Everyone’s career path is different and not predictable. Maybe your favorite will end up like Susan Sarandon, or Harrison Ford or Daniel Day Lewis or maybe tier below that or maybe maybe if lucky at least be a journeyman actor. Never huge but constant work streaming in. Whatever happens you personally are not going to make the difference. It comes down to talent, connections, luck and right career choices all colliding at the same time and you cannot orchestrate that by trying to smear Cole with anything you can throw at him. Cole is not the obstacle keeping your favorite from the A list.

Now this is quite long enough so may do another post about specific careers as I see it but suffice to say I’m tired of people thinking they can engineer what will happen with gossip when in this industry? Box office is what ultimately talks.

On the other hand, I am pleased to announce that ACCESS (360) Three-SIX-ty will be a regular feature on this blog. Expect new editions every two weeks, every month, or whenever the SIX Fandom ultimately decides to go batshit crazy (scheduling may vary). AND NOW FOR THE HEADLINES: + FOR FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE MORE MINUTE- Former SIX: The Musical alternate and swing queen Grace Mouat bids the SIX West End company farewell as she took her final bow on the SIX stage last Sunday, August 18th. Ever since her first appearance as Katherine Howard, one of her first covers aside from Catherine of Aragon, in West End Live 2018, she has donned all SIX crowns throughout her entire run, starting with last year’s U.K tour which ended last December 30th in Glasgow, up to SIX’s current run at the Art’s Theatre which officially began this January, sharing the tracks with the then-new alternates and swings Vicki Manser and Courtney Stapleton. She had announced her decision to leave SIX months prior to her last scheduled show in order to star in &Juliet, a new British musical based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet that will premiere on the West End at Shaftesbury Theatre on November 2; aside from being part of the ensemble, she will also be covering the titular character Juliet as her first cover. Grace’s departure was made even the more heartbreaking with her last Megasix as all the cast members (sans Natalie May Paris, who was on vacation at the time being) including alternates Vicki Manser and Courtney Stapleton all went on the stage to express their love and support for the young star, sharing speeches and tear-filled hugs. The writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the SIX West End queens and the queendom alike all flooded social media with appreciation posts all dedicated to the Swing Queen Grace Mouat, who, as of August 30, has been nominated as Best Understudy for the West-End Wilma Awards along with Maiya Quansah Breed, who was been nominated as Rising Star. + ALTERNATES AND UNDERSTUDIES FILL THE SWINGO CARD - The Queendom is to expect new covers and takes on the 6 wives of Henry VIII as more and more alternates don the crowns. The first one to complete the SWING BINGO ever since Grace Mouat’s departure is Vicki Manser, who has finally portrayed her third covers within the last two weeks; she made her debut as Jane Seymour on August 18th’s matinee performance, and as Catherine of Aragon last 30th of August. Courtney Stapleton surprised everyone with an Anne Boleyn debut last August 24th for both the matinee and the evening performance. To add to that, she has recently announced on her Twitter and Instagram accounts that Coleyn will indeed make a return on the evening performances on the 5th and 12th of September, along with the long-awaited Courtney Howard debut next week, which is scheduled on the 8th and 12th of September. Shekinah McFarlane, SIX’s newest alternate, has made her Cleves debut last August 15th and her Aragon debut last August 24th alongside Courtney Boleyn. Collette Guitart, on the other hand, has made speedy progress on her Swingo Card as SIX’s understudy. In merely a month, she has already portrayed 4 of the 6 queens: she had her debut as a SIX understudy, playing Jane Seymour last July 30th,her Boleyn debut coming shortly thereafter, portrayed Aragon for the first time on August 15th alongside Shekinah McFarlane’s debut, and had her latest debut as Catherine Parr with her own costume last August 30th alongside Vicki Aragon. However, there have been no announced dates so far for the debuts of SIX’s new alternate trio: Hana Stewart, Cherelle Jay and Zara Macintosh. On the SIXcago side of the world, Nicole Kyoung Mi Lambert has recently made her debut as Anna of Cleves last Monday, August 26th. There has been no news of recent debuts for Mallory Maedke however, having only covered Boleyn and Seymour so far. + SIXCAGO’S ARAGON APOLOGIZES FOR LIKING AND FOLLOWING HOMOPHOBIC POSTS AND ACCOUNTS - Adrianna Hicks, who plays Catherine of Aragon in the SIX U.S Tour, has received a tremendous amount of backlash for liking homophobic posts made by many church organizations on Instagram. Fans have also noticed that her account follows the Instagram accounts of said organizations, such as Bethel Church and the Changed Movement, both of which advocate heavily on conversion therapy ideals and generally the idea that ‘homosexuality can be erased’. According to those who have messaged her on Instagram, she has responded with the exact same message to all accounts and has blocked some when asked further about this topic. Ever since then, she has made a post on Instagram apologizing for her actions, stating that she thought the posts were promoting love and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. She ends the post wishing that she’d be forgiven while she continues to learn and grow as an ally for the LGBTQ+ community. She no longer follows the accounts and has removed the likes on their posts. In other news, she briefly left the SIXcago tour productions to star in the Sacramento Music Circus production of “The Wiz” as Dorothy from August 6th-11th, with Nicole Kyoung Mi Lambert playing Catherine of Aragon in her stead. She returned to SIX shortly thereafter. + ROYAL FLASH MOB, ATTENDED BY THE QUEENS AND THE QUEENDOM - Thousands of SIX fans, young and old, flocked together on the 31st of August, excitedly awaiting for official start of the Royal Flash Mob at exactly midday in front of the Tower of London ticket offices, wherein the attendees will perform the choreography of “SIX”. In preparation, the plan for flash mob was announced beforehand on the 24th of August by the queens, along with a tutorial to the choreography of “SIX” featuring SIX’s choreographer Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and SIX alternate Vicki Manser. On the day of the event while everyone was eagerly waiting and singing along to “SIX”, the queens were being paraded on their mini carriages (sans Alexia Mcintosh; Shekinah McFarlane stood in for Cleves) on their way to the venue whilst Courtney Stapleton, Vicki Manser, Collette Guitart, and new alternate Zara Macintosh, who has yet to make her SIX debut, also arrived to the scene. The queens led the flash mob along with some other professional dancers to guide the attendees throughout the whole song. + NO MEGASIXES AT BOSTON THEATER - Complete and utter shock came to the SIXcago fans as the iconic filming of the megasix has been prohibited by the American Repertory Theater. The theater’s ushers had announced either before the show or before the megasix itself that no phones should be out and all photography and filming in the theater is not allowed. One line in particular during the megasix was changed to fit this: from “Get your phones out, you’re gonna wanna hear this!” to “Tag/Text your friends, they’re gonna wanna see this!”. According to the ushers, this was due to some copyright issues within the theater and the Ladies In Waiting’s band union. However, the copyright issue is said to be fixed within the next weeks, therefore the tradition of recording the megasixes will most probably return sooner in September. Week 1 Digital Video Production An introduction to camera shot, angle and movement.

Camera Framing.

Camera framing and motion help us tell a story. Every frame counts, so the correct choice of camera angles, motion and types of shot are vital. Camera framing is used to help draw attention to the subject of an image, while blocking out the other areas in the scene. You as the person shooting the photograph or scene decide what the audience looks at, depending on the focus of the image it will give subtle details to the audience about such things as location or what is potentially going to happen.

In our first week of Digital Video Production we were given an introduction to camera shots, angles and movement. The key thing to remember is that filmmakers and directors give us subliminal messages or signifiers about a person or situation just from the way a shot is framed or the angle it has been shot from. The main types of shot range from extreme long shot (ELS) to extreme close up (ECU), getting to know the various shots and more importantly when to use them is something is feel will develop as this module continues.

Research Task

As a research task we were asked to discover more about the cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.

Emmanuel Lubezki is a Mexican cinematographer. A three time Oscar winner, Lubezki has worked with many acclaimed directors and is one of the most revered cinematographers working today.

Known for his groundbreaking use of natural lighting and continuous uninterrupted shots Lubezki uses a Steadicam and hand held camera to orchestrate fluid, uninterrupted camera movements during particularly significant scenes. His work has been praised by audiences and critics alike.

Notable films he has worked on include Children of Men (2006) Gravity (2013) Birdman (2014) The Revenant (2016). What makes Emmanuel Lubezki a great cinematographer is that he adapts his style to the director and movie he is working on. He employs various techniques and multiple shot types in his work

Types of Shots.

In the opening scene of The Revenant, Lubezki uses a number of different camera methods including tracking forward, high angle shots and medium close up shots.

As we can see above the high angle shot of the stream while tracking forward at a slow walking pace, this then pans up to show the audience where we are. We quickly realise as viewers we are in a forest setting.

After more tracking forward and a close up camera shot we are shown a few characters, we can not see their faces however because of the camera work involved we can establish that we are in a historical setting from some time ago which helps us set the scene in our mind.

Week Two - Depth of Field & Aperture

In photography, the aperture is arguably the most important parameter of the camera. The aperture is the opening in the camera lens that controls the amount of light that passes through the lens to reach the sensor.

Aperture is one of three parts of the exposure triangle (Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO) that helps us produce properly exposed photos.

There is a reason why aperture is regarded as the camera’s most important parameter. It controls how much of the photographic subject is acceptably sharp and in focus, which is otherwise known as the Depth of Field.

Visual representation of the relationship between the Depth of Field (DOF) and the F-Stops. The bigger the aperture the shallower the Depth of Field therefore as the aperture opening gets smaller the Depth of Field gets wider.

The size of the aperture in the F-Stop Chart does not represent the actual size of the aperture accurately. It is here to help you to visualize the relationship between different apertures.

Modern digital cameras allow us to change the aperture in a variety of increments, starting from full stop to one-third stop.

Shown below is a shot from the film Silence of the Lambs, we can see this is an example of large aperture, F/2.8 where little is in focus except for Hannibal Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins. I think this may be to emphasize the menacing nature of Hopkins character and the fact that we are viewing him in the same way as Jodie Foster’s character, Agent Starling.

An example of a small aperture is the shot below from The Dark Knight, the two characters are in focus giving a large depth of field with only the background behind them out of focus. I think this aperture is used to show the confrontation between the two characters, in this case Heath Ledger’s Joker and Rachel Dawes, also as this is the first time they have met in the film they seem to be sizing each other up which this shot does very well.

Lighting Task

As part of our learning we were divided into groups to carry out the task of taking multiple head shots and then using various lighting techniques on them. This gave us experience using the cameras and various other equipment such as the tripod. The images were then transferred to Photoshop where they could be edited. I made my head shot black and white to resemble a Hollywood actors portfolio or a political election poster.

As you can see in the picture above by moving the light before taking the photograph you can cast shadows and create different effects.

Week 3 - Cinematography & Lighting

Introduction to Cinematography.

We were shown a brief PowerPoint presentation on Cinematography. Cinematography is an essential part of film making. It’s about creative visuals that reinforce a narrative and give the audience an emotional experience.

Cinematographers are as much storytellers as directors, the difference is that they direct visuals instead of actors. Cinematographers must understand and modulate camera movement, camera placement, composition, focus, and, most importantly, lighting.

Three Point Lighting.

In our third week we looked at the concept of Three Point Lighting technique which is a standard method used in visual media such as video, film, still photography and computer-generated imagery. It is a simple but versatile system which forms the basis of most lighting.

High key lighting was used to help improve high contrast ratios. It is important to note, however, that the concept key lighting started in the film industry. Cameramen used the term key light whenever they referred to the main light used for a particular scene. Along with the key light, the cameramen would also use back light and fill light to complete the lighting effect that they needed for a particular scene. Obviously in modern film making more sophisticated lighting technology is used, so the three-light technique, while still in use today in different forms has made more complex lighting techniques available.

By using three separate positions, the photographer can illuminate the shot's subject however they desire while also controlling or eliminating the shading and shadows produced by direct lighting. The three main lighting techniques used are called Key Light, Fill Light and Back Light. Naturally you will need three lights to utilize the technique fully, but the principles are still important even if you only use one or two lights.

It is important to remember that even if you only have the one light it becomes the Key Light.

Key Light

As we can see in the image above this is the main light. It is usually the strongest and has the most influence on the look of the scene. It is placed to one side of the camera / subject so that this side is well lit and the other side has some shadow.

Fill Light

This is the secondary light and is placed on the opposite side of the key light. It is used to fill the shadows created by the key. The fill will usually be softer and less bright than the key. To acheive this, you could move the light further away or use some spun. You might also want to set the fill light to more of a flood than the key.

Back Light

The back light is placed behind the subject and lights it from the rear. Rather than providing direct lighting (like the key and fill), its purpose is to provide definition and subtle highlights around the subject's outlines. This helps separate the subject from the background and provide a three-dimensional look.

Practical Task Week 3

In our third week we were placed in teams and asked to create a trailer with shots from an already supplied storyboard. I worked alongside Aaron and Harrison and we all started off by getting hands on with the camera. Personally I had no experience of a proper camera or how one works at all so for myself this task was a challenge. i had never really used aperture or focus before and the camera was fitted with a 50mm lens. Once we all had a feel for the camera we started on our task. We began with a close up shot. After multiple attempts we finally got a better video.

Research for Video Promo

In Week 4 we were given our assignment. We had to begin to research a broad range of video work that would help inform our decisions for the assignment. I had already decided that my client for my video would be a local bar and restaurant called Redz based in Antrim. As I also worked there I thought it would benefit my video as before or after shifts I could re shoot material if need be unlike a business further away where travelling back to retake images would not be the best use of my time. All of my requests to the business were made while I was in work and I found them easy to deal with however I realise that if this was a client where I did not have a connection I would need to approach them accordingly.

In my research, I had to start by analysing a range of relevant product video's which in this case were based on the hospitality industry. It is important to be aware of the approaches of video makers and see what way they employ focus, camera movement, camera shots, depth of field and maintaining consistency with colour.

Using YouTube for inspiration, I began to look for shots, music and effects that would work well and any other features to maybe try and avoid, then try to incorporate some of these ideas into my own video. I had a rough idea of what I was hoping to achieve both for myself and the client, a smooth clean video which promotes Redz and shows my choice of editing.

Firstly I looked for positive features in the videos, things I thought looked well. Below is the link to the promotion video of the recently opened Grand Central Hotel in Belfast. In my opinion a very well shot, clean video which highlights all the features and services offered by the hotel. The opening scene is shot with a drone and it rises over the top of the Belfast, which works very well as the Grand Central towers over the rest of the smaller buildings. While continuing my research I found another video for Bullitt Hotel, Belfast, again another video which was well shot however about 50 seconds in the whole thing goes a bit strange which in my opinion lost the meaning of what they were trying to do. I mentioned this to my tutor Michael which resulted in him watching it also then us having a discussion about do’s and don’ts when shooting something hospitality related which I found beneficial. The final video I discovered was for a whisky bar called Whisky Bar 88. Excellently shot and a decent background track got me thinking about the cocktails I already made in work if possible could I do something similar. The video YouTube link is shown below. These three videos were my main inspiration for my Redz promo video.

Week 6

This week we continued researching and coming up with ideas for our videos similar to week 4. I spent the first part of the lesson looking at various shots from a number of films. Later in that day we were given a task to create a short video, we were told we could take shots from other movies and use them in our videos. Personally I like the use of close up shots in a film, I think we can learn quite a lot from a good close up film.

We compiled a shot list to help us create a video, this consisted of what the shots were, their number, the location, the shot type/angle, and any movement. We then moved on to shooting our footage. I was in a group with Lori and Aaron. The final video is shown below, we added a backing track that we thought sounded spooky for the style of video. We also thought it would look good edited in black and white. We added a preset to the whole video, we also added some cross dissolves to transition switching between clips. As a group project I think it worked well.

Week 7 - Storyboard Stage

During the Halloween break I borrowed one of the cameras from the college along with a lens and a tripod. Having never properly used a camera before I thought this would be a good time to get some practice and took some pictures of my client for my storyboard. These are the storyboards that I created from my recce shots.

Change of client

At this point unfortunately I had to change my client. Having got to this stage this was quite a setback as I had already filmed footage and gathered up a substantial amount of material which was now irrelevant to my assignment.

I needed to find another client and quickly so I chose my local gym, Waites Warehouse in Ballyclare where I am a member. The location was close meaning I could go there whenever I needed and I already had a connection as I knew the owner personally. Once I explained this would be a free promotional video that they could have when I was finished they were more than happy to accommodate me.

Research

Having to start again I took numerous recce shots at the gym. Various angles and various shot types. I then had to create new storyboards.

My video will begin as an opening shot of one of the logos from inside the gym, then it will move onto looking at equipment, then a class showing activity. Next it moves to the class starting and ending with the logo having a glitch effect.

Inspirational Videos

Using YouTube I looked for promotional gym videos and some ideas that I could possibly use in my own production. The best one I came across is shown below. There were a number of reasons I liked this video, it’s well shot, not to long and the video fits the background track perfectly. I loosely based my own video around this.

The video in Figure 21 is another good example of a gym promotional video, however in my opinion it is far too long with a very long build up at the beginning. By 30 seconds into the video nothing in terms of action has started so this is something I was keen to avoid on my own production. This video is where I got the idea to fade the colour to grey or black and white.

Week 8 - Kinetic Typography

During this week we were supposed to finish the pre-production stage and move on to learning kinetic typography. Because I had only changed client this caused some issues for me and unfortunately I was unable to finish the kinetic typography task. We had to pick a quote from a film and make it move.

I chose the line “Are you not entertained!” from the movie ‘Gladiator’. I downloaded the mp3 file and opened it in Adobe After Effects.

After I did the audio research I researched how to create kinetic typography, I found a YouTube video that helped explain the process. The link is shown below.

Week 9 - Continuing Blog Work & Filming

This week I used class time to catch up on my blog as I had fallen behind due to a few disruptions. I also began filming much later than I should have as by this stage I should have been beginning production. The change of client had meant I was probably a week or two behind where I should be.

Once I began I was quickly able to get some really good footage however I also shot a fair amount of very average footage as this was the first time I had properly undertaken a project of this nature. Below are some still shots of video I shot which ended up in my final edit. This was a lengthy process as I had shot over 30 clips, I shot most of the shots more than once to get the best possible results.

I also needed to go back to the gym to get some individual shots as it was a group class I had filmed before. I arranged a day and time with one of the Personal Trainers, Darren, and he kindly let me film while he was doing his own training. This really helped me as I didn’t get some shots I needed the first day because I ran out of time.

Week 10 to 15 - Video Editing and Final Production

During the next five weeks I began the process of creating my final video. In this part of my Tumblr blog I will list how I ended up with my final product. To begin my editing process I created a new Premier Pro document, I did this by starting Premier Pro and and selecting ‘new’.

Once my new file was created I began to import the video clips I wanted to use in my video. I did this by going to ‘file’ ‘import’ and selecting the videos I wanted. Next I trimmed them using the Razor tool getting rid of any unneeded footage and put them into my sequence. I used this tool a lot and trimmed my videos, I double clicked on the video in the bottom left of my screen and found where I wanted it to start and end the clip.

I also downloaded a cinema scope layer to to give the movie effect of black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. I tried my video both with and without these and it definitely looked better keeping those in.

Once I had all my clips in Premier Pro I began the process of putting them into order to make the video the way I wanted it following on from my storyboard. Next I needed to find a background track that fitted my video, I wanted the track sorted early on in production as I could then edit my clips accordingly to fit the beat of the music. Using YouTube I looked for copyright free gym tracks and tried to find one that wasn’t simply a generic dance like track.

I found a track that had a violin section and a crescendo that I planned to use as my video gathered pace. I then converted the file and imported it into Premier Pro. Below I have added a screen shot of what the music file looks like when imported.

At the end of my video I wanted the music to fade out and not just stop dead as I had seen this in other videos and did not like it. By placing points on the sound bar I could make the track volume fade lower until the music was gone as shown below.

Now that I had the order that my video was going to run in and the background track to go with it my next task was to remove the colour and get the desired effect I wanted in the video. To do this I selected ‘Effects’ and then used the colour picker to leave certain colours in as shown below.

By selecting this effect it changed my video to the way you see it in Figure 34 below.

By this stage my video was coming along quite well however the changes between clips was not great and didn't look very pleasing on the eye. At this point I needed to add transitions to my clips. I was googling during my research stage for transitions and how to add them in. Not wanting a fade I decided on a different transition which was more jumpy like a film glitching.

I continued the editing process both in college and at home until I was content that I had produced something that would promote the gym well and look professional at the same time.
