Universes Away - PT. 13
WandaNat x OC
a/n: Bad slump again! Not in school anymore so that should help :) Masterlist Warnings: blood, broken bones, knives. Word Count: 2.7k Summary: A ghost ruins the soccer game.
The New Jersey summer air is hot and muggy after a night of warm thunderstorms. The soccer field is wet, causing each of the players to get mud all over their uniforms. The heat and rain don’t stop their families from cheering and the teams from playing their best. Adrian and Natasha are sitting in a couple of lawn chairs in a long line of seats along the sidelines. They enjoy popsicles while watching their boys play. Behind them, Wanda talks with Clint, Laura, and Pietro. She thought it would be awkward to connect with them but it felt like falling back into old habits.
As she spoke with them, she began searching their minds to see how much they know about her situation. Ease washed over her when she came to learn that Natasha had explained what had happened and asked that they ask questions as they arise, but be gentle when doing so. The family had experienced many weird things in the past so while they were able to acknowledge the novelty of this situation, they did not let it bother them. She relished in seeing her brother, mostly. Her memory of him was shrouded in his youth since the last time she’d seen him was almost ten years prior, just before his death. She thought she would never see him again. The sight of him brings a host of emotions to the surface, as now, his hair has started to darken and he cut it only for it to be replaced with facial hair. His smile was still the same and she admired every bit of it while he spoke, noticing the smile lines on his forehead and corners of his eyes. She no longer feels like a ghost is before her.
All of their attention is redirected when Tony and Natasha begin loudly cheering. Adrian stands to cheer with them when they realize that little Morgan Stark had made the game changing goal. Billy, Tommy, and Nathan give her congratulatory high fives and the three of them wave to their family on the sidelines. As the cheering decrescendos, Adrian peers past the teams, across the field, and their heart spikes when they catch a glimpse of a familiar ghost.
Like last night, he stands ominously behind a group of parents with the opposing team. A violent chill slithers down Adrian’s spine, their blood running icy. He’s older now - hair graying and scruffy, his knuckles and face bruised. Comparatively, he dawns an all black suit in crisp condition. He sticks out in the crowd and yet no one seems to notice. A pounding begins in Adrian’s head and they quietly leave their family, going around the sidelines of the field. Wanda notices their departure and turns curiously. She decides not to interfere, but cautiously observes where her spouse is going. She glances at Natasha to see if she reacts to their absence. With no reaction from her wife, Wanda’s concern fades but does not disappear.
The Ghost’s eyes follow Adrian as they make their way towards him. His demeanor is unwavering and demanding of submission. Adrian stands next to him, mimicking his stance - hands clasped in front of their torso and legs shoulder width apart. “I thought I killed you.” Their voice is cold, solid ice.
He scoffs. “That was my brother.” He nods his chin towards Wanda, who is facing him but appears to be watching the game intently. “I need to speak with her.”
Adrian’s brows narrow and they turn toward him placing a hand on his chest to push him away. “The fuck do you mean? You need to leave.”
Indifferent, he turns toward them. “I’ve been in contact with her. We have a mutual understanding about a mission at hand.”
“We’ve been out of Hydra for years now,” their heart rate continues to rise and their breaths hasten as they get more confused. “There is no mission anymore. She wouldn’t be taking orders from you, either.”
“I see she must not have spoken to you.” Adrian’s hands drop to their side as they make deafening eye contact with the Prizrak. “Maximoff prevented the theft of the Darkhold on one condition;” his gaze darkened in theirs and his irises turned a familiar purple. “She convince you to kill Werner for me. The experiments were successful and I no longer need his interference in my plans.”
Adrian looks across the field at their wife and makes eye contact, eyes softening with fear. Fear is an untimely guest. Slowly turning back to Prizrak, “There’s no way. E-even…” their breaths are heaving. “Even with the Darkhold. She’d never agree to that.” The floodgates of their memory are leaking at the seams as they recall some of their final experiences with the other Wanda.
He turns his gaze towards Wanda and practically paralyzes her. A wry smile arises as he looks back to Adrian, raising a finger to tilt their chin towards him. “Oh, she would.” They smack his hand away and he slowly drops it. “She agreed. She knows the cost. If she could not convince you then I will have to force you.”
Visions flashed behind their eyes as their irises matched Prizrak’s purple. Wanda’s eyes caged in a crown of darkness as she sits upon a throne. The throne is carefully stabilized on a mound of body parts. Beside her stands the Ghost, holding Natasha in a chokehold. She’s passed out in his grasp. The boys whimper in front of her, on their knees, as the Ghost places a blade to their mother’s throat. Out of Adrian’s control, their hands reach outward to one of the boys and wrings their neck with a violent snap. The other boy cries out as they reach out and do the same to him, abruptly stopping the tears. Outside of their body, they see themselves, eyes bound behind a cage of darkness like their wife’s, a bloody grin on their face.
White light floods their vision and they’re gasping for air as they’re released from the horror in their mind. “You don’t have to agree,” Prizrak states, “but you know the cost of declining the offer.” They feel their eyes rattle in their skull as they watch him closely. He turns his head towards the game and they follow, as though they are the other side of his mirror. As he raises his hand, a commotion begins on the field. Adrian’s eyes go straight to the center of the field where two players are on the ground, roughly 20 feet apart. Their eyes are still adjusting as they realize Natasha is desperately grasping at one of them. Their gaze shifts to the other player to see Wanda attending them. Wanda looks up and behind her, catching Adrian’s gaze.
Adrian turns to assault Prizrak only to find his disappearance jarring. They quickly look through the crowd, unable to see the tall monster in a suit. Their heartbeat stops for a moment as they spin and make their way to the field. Wanda looks back up to them and makes eye contact, then directs them to Natasha. Adrian, feeling their heart begin to tear, collapses to the ground next to Natasha. Tommy’s screams are heard across other fields. The games across the way stop in their tracks and observe the catastrophe.
The disaster is a sight to see; Natasha is trying to keep Tommy calm, lifting his head onto her lap as he screams in pain. Adrian looks over him, from tear stained cheeks downward, and sees a bone emerging from one of his legs. They start to move their hands over it, not noticing the saliva pooling beneath their tongue and the crazed look in their eyes. “Mom, no!’ He shouts at them before they can touch.
They’re shocked from their state and look up at everyone just standing around. “Has anyone called an ambulance?” Their voice is more stern than angry, but it puts a bit of fear in everyone standing nearby. A few people scuttle away. Adrian looks over their shoulder to see Wanda cradling Billy’s whole body in her arms, stroking the hair away from his eyes. As they scan his body they see no signs of blood or injury, but Wanda has tears in her eyes. Adrian starts to do some searching, but is pulled away when a paramedic shouts as he approaches the scene.
Once the boys are each loaded into an ambulance with their respective parents, Adrian makes their way to the family van and begins barreling towards the hospital. They only told Pietro what hospital to go to as they saw him as they were leaving. Their mind drowns in memories, trying to determine when Wanda would have spoken to Prizrak. If she really was working with the Darkhold in her last months, then it isn’t out of the question for her to have made a deal with this monster. The scars on Adrian’s back began to burn and ache. Memories of the knife gliding across their spine riddled them with numbness and a static buzz in their mind.
Upon arriving at the hospital, they make their way towards intake and begin conversing with the desk attendant. With each question answered, another memory arises. In each memory they can see themselves outside of their body, as though watching from afar. A man in black combat gear pushing a child to the floor with a high pitched yelp. He pins them down by their wrists, the pair struggle until he moves to pin their hands with one of his as his other hand moves down to his trousers and begins moving them downward. Mistake. Power surged behind their hazel eyes, turning them stormy gray. They kicked him in the groin with their boot, pushed their hands upwards to release them. They roll away, gripping the hunting knife he’d dropped and plunging it into his side. He calls out in pain as they twist it and push him onto his back. They rip the blade from him and begin plunging it. Over. And over.
The waiting room is cool and the scent of frustration lingers. Their mind still drowns, but the memories are blurred now. Their foot taps restlessly against the floor, everyone’s thoughts are starting to penetrate the waters. Natasha comes around the corner and immediately spots Adrian, who jumps to greet her in a tight embrace.
“Are the boys okay? Where’s Wanda? What happened?” They erupt, the waters bursting through their mouth as they plead to their spouse. Natasha gently grips their shoulders and forces them to look into her eyes.
“They’re okay, follow me. I’ll tell you before we get to Billy’s room.” She smiled, a fake one, and grabbed their hand. They began making their way towards Billy’s room, Adrian could tell Natasha’s thoughts were racing as quickly as their own. Eventually, they made their way to her side.
As they approached his room, Natasha finally spoke. “We think Billy passed out on the field,” she begins and turns her back to the door. Adrian can see through the window in the door, just behind Natasha. Their impatience is apparent to Natasha as she places her hand to their chest, keeping them from going any further. “When he passed out, Tommy had the ball and stopped. None of the players noticed and they trampled him. He broke his leg, which you saw.”
“Why did Billy pass out? Have they looked at him yet? Where’s Tommy -” they attempt to push past Natasha but she blocks them again.
“Ads, stop, look at me.” She demands before reaching out to their chin and directing them to her gaze. She can see gray clouds wash over their eyes, tears start to form in the corners and Nat’s eyes narrow. “Shh, it’s okay. Tommy is in surgery, he’s going to be okay. They said he’ll make a full recovery but they needed to fix it quickly.” She takes a deep breath, trying to calm herself and her spouse. “They’ve looked at Billy and he’s okay too, as far as they know. They can’t tell what happened.” A pregnant pause washed over them as Natasha cupped their face. “Will you try to look…?” They’re still now, eyes shimmering as they glance between Natasha and the window just behind. They nod slowly, “I’ll try,” they whisper. She squeezes their biceps and turns upon release, opening the door, Adrian moves slowly behind her.
“I found them,” Natasha whispers to Wanda who’s sitting on the bed. She looks up at them both and smiles as she brushes Billy’s hair from his closed eyes. Adrian makes their way to Wanda’s side and pulls her into a hug, kissing the top of her head.
When they pull away, they cup her face as she looks up at them. She holds their hands to her face, “Everything is okay, he’s going to be okay.”
They nod, trying to understand. “Can you see anything?”
She glances at their son and shakes her head gently. They look at him as she glances back, “May I?” They ask. She nods and moves away to stand with Natasha, they move towards the head of the bed and lean over their son. Their left hand cups his face and strokes his cheek with their thumb. Their eyes close and begin to wander within his mind, searching for causation. In his mind’s eye, they can see the horror that Prizrak had shown them. Billy sees his brother’s neck snap and runs away, the rest in the scene are still.
Adrian watches him run and makes their way towards him. Running away from the scene, the drop turns white and liminal. They follow him for what feels like forever, time immeasurable in the white surrounding. He eventually runs into the front yard of their home and disappears behind the front door. Adrian finally reaches the door, opening it, and shouting into dead space. They walk into the home cautiously, quiet steps. Upstairs, then peering into the boys’ room. They check a couple of the boys’ typical hiding places before moving to their second favorite room for hide and seek.
At the other end of the hallway is the guest room - rarely used but well kept. They gently push the door open and tilt their head around the edge of the bed. There, in a dark corner, Billy is curled with his knees to his chest and head resting on top of them. “Stink,” they call out, “it’s mom. Are you okay?” They know the answer, but want to give him room to express.
He stays curled up as they approach. They crouch in front of him and extend a hand to his arm. He flinches, his head upright, and scoots back against the wall. Adrian’s eyes soften and they brush a hand against his arm. “Hey, baby, that wasn’t real. I promise,” his eyes are wild and his breaths are quick as he studies his mother’s face. Being within the mind, there’s nowhere for the two to run. They’re left to trust each other as they are.
They draw their hand back and sit down on the floor, resting an arm on their knee. “I saw it too, Billy.” They hold his gaze, “it was really scary. I didn’t like it either.”
“How did you see it?” His voice is timid, but he becomes more comfortable.
They look away, releasing a breath. They turn back to him, their accent coming through in hopes of calming him. They know that he associates it with calmness amongst his parents. “A scary man, that mommy and I used to know, came to your game. He put it in my head. I didn’t know he put it in yours, too.”
“Is he gone?”
They nod, “he’s gone. I promise.” The corner of their lip turns upward, and they stand. With an outstretched hand, they address their son, “come here buddy.”
Still weary, he stands and grabs their hand. Adrian loosens their grip and sits in the rocking chair next to the window, pulling him behind them. They pull him into their lap, his legs draped across one of theirs, a hand on his back and the other on his outer knee. “We can stay here for a bit until you feel better, okay? I won’t leave you.”
He nods quietly and nuzzles into their neck. “I love you,” he whispers.
“I love you, too, Billy.” Their hand slides up his back and into his hair, gently scratching.

Date Night & Murder
Pairing: Villanelle x Reader
Word Count: 691
Summary: What a date night between two assassins looks like
“Oh come on,” you hear your girlfriend, Villanelle, say. Crimson liquid seeps out of your latest victim and onto the floor. It stains her new boots. “I just bought these.”
“I’ll buy you another pair baby,” you say, soothing her over for now. You look around the now dead man’s apartment, making sure you left no evidence.
“Oh please you owe me more than just a pair of boots. I’d like three…and maybe some drinks.”
“Fine,” you agree, not wanting to argue with the blonde woman. You double check everything before making your way to the fire escape. You climb down, making sure Villanelle is right behind you.
“Now come on, we need to go so we can change before the movie. I want to have the best seats,” Villanelle says once the two of you are on the ground.
“Of course you do. You only want the best. The best food, the best clothes, the best wine,” you ramble on, teasing her.
“I think you’re forgetting the most important one baby. I wanted the best girl and now I’ve got her.”
You can feel your heart melt for the woman.
“We’ll I can definitely say you got her and you got her forever.”
The two of you quickly walk back to your shared apartment. After quickly showering and changing, the two of you walk hand in hand out the door and towards the theater.
The walk there is rather peaceful, which surprises you considering who you're walking with.
"Ok you get the snacks and I'll get the tickets," your girlfriend says as you walk through the doors.
"Ok," you agree. You wait in line for the food and decide on a large popcorn and two soft drinks for the two of you. Just as you finish paying, your girlfriend walks up to you with the tickets in her hand. She takes the popcorn and her drink from you and hands you your ticket. You look down at your ticket and a look of confusion sets across your face.
“Oksana. You said this was going to be an action adventure movie. What about Minions: The Rise of Gru screams action?”
“Are you kidding me Y/n? Minions is full of action. And don’t act like you don’t wanna see it. I’ve seen you watching the commercials,” she retorts back.
While she’s not wrong, this isn’t the movie you were expecting to watch during date night. Not to get you wrong but being in a theater with a bunch of children doesn’t exactly scream date. But as long as you’re with V you’re happy.
The two of you walk hand in hand into the theater and take your seats, only after V not so politely asks two children to move. She really was serious about getting the best seats.
The two of you sit down just as the commercials start. You glance over at Villanelle and she is enthralled by the screen. It brings a smile to your face. After the hard life she's had, she deserves a little happiness.
The two of you munch on popcorn as you watch the screen. You laugh at the funny parts and (as ashamed as you are to admit this) you cry at the sad parts too. The movie ends all too soon as the credits start to roll and the lights turn on.
You move to stand up, but your girlfriend pulls you back down.
"That's it?" she questions.
"Yeah it's over baby."
"But I don't want it to be over," she pouts.
"We can always go see it again," you tell her.
"I guess that will work," she says. "But I want to come back and see it first thing tomorrow."
"Whatever you want baby," you say, trying to convince her to leave. She finally gets up and the two of you walk back to your shared apartment.
After you get home and into bed you look at the beautiful blonde next to you.
"What are you staring at baby?"
"You. You know I love you V, right?"
"I know baby. I love you too," she says. She pulls you closer into her and the two of you fall asleep just like that.

Im not gonna argue with anyone about kaia's acting b/c it isnt the best mostly b/c she comes across as lifeless and unnatural. She def benefits from the fact shes a nepo baby and white. However I will defend her in bottoms, b/c its sometimes more about casting then it is acting. Kaias character is supposed to come across as one dimensional, a sterotypical popular high school girl who everyone aspires to be with she doesnt have any substance outside of her looks which is juxtaposed with this idea that a girl like her wouldnt be interested in somethink like bare knuckle fighting. Her role doesnt require dynamic acting and I would argue someone like zendaya wouldnt work b/c shes to dynamic and would go against the one dimensionality of how character was written. Certainly could this role have gonna to a black woman like laura harrier ( who also cant act) yeah totally but I think kaia works as that character, that doesnt mean shes a great actor . She still struggles with basic things such the inability to convey emotion.
Also austin, I like austin hes very dynamic but Im also not 100 convinced. Hes a great character actor evidenced by dune part 2. He was great in elvis fantastic even. He clearly puts the work in and willing to work on his craft. But after watching bike riders early this year and two episodes masters of air, he was very underwhelming dont know if he has the longevity as a lead ( hopefully he changes my mind b/c he seems like a cool dude and I want him to succeed). Hes struggling mightily with accents and in bikeriders he was overshadowed by jodie comer and tom hardy also even mike faist (for his very small role in bikeriders but hes extremely sensitivity and empathetic in portrayal as an interviewer). His latest stuff he comes across as one note and places too much emphasis on a huskier/smoky voice that at times sound more distracting and hinders the character.
(Though for MOTA im still in wait and see mode cause I havent seen the entire series yet)
Re: Kaia...
Sooo... basically, what you're saying is that they gave her a character role that she basically already embodies (dull, lifeless, etc) because that's how her acting already is in real life? Am I understanding this correctly lol? 😅
That's fine if you liked her in the "Bottoms" movie (we all have different tastes). I didn't even see the movie (it just didn't look funny at all to me 👀), but I saw enough clips lol 😅
Re: Austin....
Interesting take on Austin. 🤔 I haven't seen him in Dune Part 2 or The Bikeriders yet, so I can't really speak to those films... yet. 🤷🏾♀️
But I thought he did great in Elvis. 👍🏾
Maybe he IS a character actor? Nothing wrong with that. There are PLENTY of great character actors in Hollywood, and that's where they thrive. ☺️
I honestly haven't seen much of his work post-Elvis to really judge. 🤷🏾♀️ I'm excited to see more of his work in this phase of his career. I've only seen clips of him in OUATIH and I thought he was great in that. He's really good at disappearing in roles, which I like. So far, his characters have been diversely DIFFERENT ever since the play he did with Denzel Washington, and I love that. Sometimes, it's hard to imagine I'm watching the same actor lol 😆 😂
Maybe you're so used to seeing Austin in character roles that when he plays someone quieter and less "out there" you are bored lol 😆
Like I said, I haven't seen him in "The Bikeriders" yet, but it's hard to imagine anyone outshining Tom Hardy, coz Tom is just.... 👌🏾
Prior to "Elvis", I'd only seen Austin in fluff TV shows like "The Carrie Diaries" or "Switched at Birth", etc. So I've seen him in various different roles PRE-Elvis.
So far, I'm enjoying MOTA, and I'm interested in seeing where his career takes him in this era. I'm just glad he's getting to do more of the type of work that he wants to do now in his career. 😊
Re: His voice....
Austin's voice has ALWAYS been deep imo. 🤷🏾♀️ Deep and slightly raspy.
Here are some old clips....
I think when he got older, it just got a bit huskier.
I really don't think he's putting anything on. Don't pelt me with tomatoes but I actually sort of suspect (I only said SUSPECT) that he kinda ruined his voice a little when singing for Elvis all those years. I'm a singer as well, and it can definitely happen. I had vocal nodules that changed my voice (I could barely speak at one point). I had to go through vocal therapy for many months in fact for it.
My voice is fine now, thankfully lol 😆, but if you've developed vocal nodules, they can for sure change the quality of your voice. So, he might just have vocal nodules. I don't suggest getting them surgically removed if anyone has them, but vocal rest, along with changing ways in which you vocalize can help diminish them.

Committed (Walter "Keys" McKey X Millie Rusk)
Summary: Millie panicks about a mishap with her laptop, while Keys jumps in for damage control.
"Shit! No, no, no, NO!" I cried, frantically trying to press the undo button.
Build successful. Code overwritten.
My heart threatened to jump out of my chest. I cupped my mouth with my hands, my eyes widening as much as they possibly could.
We'd spent countless days and sleepless nights working on the code for a new update, which Keys and I had planned out for Free Life.
Through numerous builds, we had almost finished our work on the new update. Keys hadn't had any sleep in the last 40 hours, which is why I shoved him away to bed the minute we were done with the major part of our update. I was supposed to polish up the update with a few minor tweaks but, I got so caught up with the tweaks that I forgot to commit* the last working version of our code. And now, after I'd made these modifications, our code stopped working entirely.
Keys was so excited about this update. The smile on his face, when we were completed our build for the update, was priceless. The kind of mistake I made, is usually made by college freshmen.
How could you be so dumb, Millie?
Or perhaps, this was a result of operating only on three hours' worth of sleep for the past one week. But, that was no excuse.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, shutting my eyes close. It was then that I felt drops of tears roll down the planes of my cheek.
"Millie," Keys called out to me from his room, his voice groggy.
Almost immediately, I sat up straight, running my fingers through my tousled hair and wiping my face.
"Millie, that's enough for tonight. You need to go get some sle- whoa, are you okay?" He walked into the living room, which was where we hung out all day and all night, considering that our systems were all messily set-up in here.
I looked at Keys, biting my lip in attempts to hold back the tears that threatened to roll down my cheek. Keys furrowed his brow, making his way over to me.
"What's wrong?" He squinted at my screen.
"Keys," I started, as I cleaned his glasses with a microfibre before handing them to him, which he quickly slipped on his nose. "I-I..."
He skimmed through the code on my screen, his hand resting on the top of my chair and his body bent forward slightly, to get a better look at the screen.
"The code seems alright to me. But, you'd know better, you built this AI engine after all. What happened, anyway?" He looked at me gently, before hesitantly placing his hand on my cheek.
I took a deep breath, slightly nodding my head sideways.
"I forgot to commit our last working code. I-I made some minor tweaks but it's not working at all now. And, I don't remember how much of code I added after that, how much of it I changed, I can't-can't remember anything." I cried, tears rolling down my cheeks. "I'm such a noob."
He looked at me blankly for a brief moment, before kneeling down in front of me.
"Mills, it's alright. We built it together once, we can build it again. You don't have to freak out about it." He smiled gently, taking my hands in his.
"But we spent countless days and sleepless nights on this, Keys."
"It won't be hard to recover our code from this. We'll figure it out, together."
I smiled lightly, through my tears, before wrapping my arms around him. He reciprocated, embracing me in his arms and nuzzling his face in the crook of my neck.
"I love you, Keys."
"I love you too, Mills."
With that, the two of us settled into our seats and began trying to fix our code. The 'rescue mission' as Keys called it. It didn't take us as long as I feared. We were done with it in about two hours. After that, the code was up and running.
Successfully committed to branch origin/master.
"Well, we did it." Keys beamed.
I smiled and got up from my seat, making my way over to him.
"Thanks for helping me out with this." I croaked as I seated myself on his lap, leaning back into his chest. I took a deep, relaxed breath, before Keys wrapped his arms around my chest, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"You did it all on your own, Mills."
"Shush. Not the right time to be humble."
He chuckled.
"I might not have helped much with the current commit of our code, but I am sure I've committed something, somewhere else."
I smiled, making tiny circles with my finger on his hand.
"And, might I ask, what that may be?"
"Millie Rusk, my version control system has committed my soul to you, the love of my life, forever and always."
My heart melted. I turned around to smile at him, before leaning in to kiss him. Yes, we were kissing at 3:50 AM, but that's not what mattered to me.
Keys was the key to my heart, and he had just committed to making me his lock, forever and always.
That's what mattered to me.
~~~
*commit: committing, in programming, refers to the process of saving different versions of your code, for easy reference and code recovery.
"The Last Duel" Is A Critical Success, But Not A Box Office Hit.
While the Killing Eve/Jodie Comer fandom is passionate, truth is it's not large and certainly not large enough to drive a 2 hour and 30 minute period piece (with some problematic subject matter) to the top of the box office. Not against the first week of yet another damn Halloween installment and the second week of a long-delayed James Bond flick. From Deadline: ...the opening for 20th/Disney’s The Last Duel is low, very low with an estimated $2M-$3M Friday at 3,065 theaters on its way to a $5M-$7M opening. Not the lowest opening for a Ridley Scott-directed movie: Some of his low domestic debuts include A Good Year ($3.7M) and 1492 ($3M). 20th Century Studios/Disney also has Ridley Scott’s French 1300s drama The Last Duel this weekend. The movie isn’t expected to do well, in the mid- to-high-single digits, and that’s already showing in its Thursday night previews which drew $350K starring off of 6 p.m. showtimes.
Even though the movie is from Scott and has a favorable Rotten Tomatoes Score of 86% Certified Fresh, the pic has a polarizing story. Anecdotally, some awards voters we watched the movie with were really turned off by it. Set during the Hundred Years War, The Last Duel follows the rape of a knight’s (Matt Damon) wife (Jodie Comer) by his former friend and fellow knight (Adam Driver). The movie, which runs at 2 hours and 32 minutes, is told from each of their viewpoints. The Last Duel is on a theatrical window, given 20th’s previous pay cable deals.
The Last Duel was always going to be a tough sell. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are better known than Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, but they are not locks for a successful opening week either. The subject of the central conflict rape and rape is both triggering and highly polarizing. The target audience is older and less familiar with Comer than her passionate fandom. They rushed to see Comer in a lightweight, fun piece of fluff like Free Guy, but may not repeat the feat for The Last Duel and director Ridley Scott's unsettling depictions of rape. This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. A testosterone-heavy period piece with 51-year old Damon and 49-year-old Affleck in shitty wigs duking it out over matters of "honor" are not an automatic draw even with a #MeToo nod added by Damon and Affleck by bringing in Nicole Holofcener to co-write the script. A big problem is the demographic for this sort of prestige project remains reluctant about returning to movie theaters. That is why the receipts for Venom: Let There Be Carnage gobbled up Daniel Craig's final turn as James Bond in No Time to Die, (which recruited Killing Eve's Phoebe Waller-Bridge to make the script less of a sausage party) in their respective opening weeks. While the lackluster box office of The Last Duel won't end Comer's award prospects, it doesn't enhance them either. Don't be shocked If Scott's upcoming House of Gucci surpasses The Last Duel and the leading lady who ends up taking home the Best Actress award at the Academy Awards is Lady GaGa while Jodie Comer smiles and looks pretty as she sits back and applauds the winner. The arc of Comer's career is ascendant and it's pretty much universal that it is her performance that is at the heart of The Last Duel. Glory is coming for her. It just might be coming later than sooner.
Universes Away - PT. 10
WandaNat x OC
Masterlist
a/n: I cut out a lot of fluff, thinking of doing some HCs or drabbles for them?? idk we'll see.
Warnings: none that I can think of! Just some subtle cute flirting, Adrian being a bit of a gentleman.
Word Count: 4.3k
Summary: Adrian learns a little bit about Wanda's past.
Their Friday morning moved about at a typical pace. Adrian awoke early working out in the garage for their morning meditation, coming upstairs to shower and then wake the boys. When they entered the bedroom after their shower they were greeted by Natasha sitting up in bed, reading as was part of her morning routine as well. Wanda, still appearing to be asleep, laid her head on Natasha's stomach, her arms wrapped around Natasha's middle. Natasha stroked her hair quietly while she read, turning to Adrian with a smile as they made their way around the bed to deliver a kiss to her lips. Once the kiss had been delivered, they made their way to the closet and began sifting through the clothes, taking in options for the day.
"How did last night go?" Natasha whispered to them, setting her book down quietly on the nightstand, both hands now giving their attention to Wanda.
Adrian had just chosen a plain white t-shirt, black jeans, and a dark gray bomber jacket as the cooler fall weather was beginning to settle in the Asbury air. Once they'd taken the clothes off of the hangers, they gently half-folded them and set them on the arm of the lounge chair in the corner of the room. "It went well," they told her and turned slowly to make eye contact, "date tonight." They gave her a wide natural smile, one that Natasha hadn't seen in so long. Natasha smiled back and Adrian continued to pick the rest of their outfit. They took a pair of white crew socks out of their drawer, a pair of gray boxer briefs and a nude binder as well. Their hair was still dripping and they took the corner of the towel and scrunched the ends of their hair, squeezing out the water.
"I'll get a ride with Clint and pick up all the kids, we'll just spend the night with them," Natasha told them as they started pulling on their clothes, but they paused, stumbling, to look at her.
Their face lit up, "really?" Natasha nodded in affirmation, "I'll run all the errands for the game today while they're at school, promise. And we'll take the van tomorrow and pick everyone up, whatever you need," while relieved, their voice leaked with anxiety. Natasha could tell that they were nervous for the date and didn't want to upset anyone. Adrian finally shimmied their jeans up their legs, not buttoning them, but stumbled and accidentally stomped loudly on the floor, muttering curses as they steadied themselves. It was enough to bring Wanda from her rest as she moved her arm and slowly looked up to Natasha, who welcomed her waking with a gentle smile.
"Good morning. Sleep okay, lovely?" Natasha asked her quietly, no longer whispering. Wanda nodded slowly as she gradually pushed herself off of the bed in an attempt to wake up. It was unsuccessful as she landed back among the pillows. She lies on her back, her arms crossed as they cover her eyes. She bellowed a groan that flowed into a gentle laugh, sighing at the end. Natasha and Adrian's eyes were trained on her, both of them grinning at their partner as she was unaware. Adrian continued slowly pulling on their clothes, quietly struggling to pull their binder over their head. Wanda uncovered her eyes and turned to Natasha immediately.
"Good morning, sorry," she told her, feeling bad that she didn't say anything and was sure her groans came off as rude.
"Don't be sorry," Natasha reassured her, "are you ready for the day?" Natasha's gaze fell on Adrian for just a moment, smiling wide as she caught them staring and admiring Wanda, whose hands were now laced under her head. Their white shirt bundled in their hands, fidgeting as they bite their lip in thought. Their head ached to turn, forcing their eyes away from Wanda only to be met by Natasha's gaze. It snapped them from their trance as they fluttered their eyes and continued getting ready.
"I think so, what are we doing today?" She asked, giggling as her gaze floated to Adrian who had turned around as they pulled on their shirt.
"Well, you can come with me to work today or stay with Adrian today, whichever you prefer." Wanda tried to listen to Natasha but her attention was placed on watching Adrian, seeing how low their scars went for the first time. She wondered what they were wearing under their shirt, seeing that it became flesh with their skin and obviously tighter than what she was used to seeing. Their muscles were subtly defined along their lower back and biceps, her eyes were trained on their movement, staring as they flexed.
As Wanda slowly turned her head back to Natasha she allowed her instincts to make her decision, "I'll go with Adrian today," her tone quiet, still lost in thought. Natasha smiled, nodding in agreement and began making her way out of the bed.
Wanda followed Natasha through their typical morning routine. Adrian woke the boys and went downstairs to start making breakfast. Everyone got ready with ease and joined downstairs for breakfast where they shared domestic conversation about the weekend ahead. It was everything Wanda dreamed of as she beamed at her family for the entirety of the meal.
Eventually, though, their conversations did end and it was time to get the boys to school and Natasha to work. Adrian and Natasha unanimously took the task of taking care of the dishes while Wanda guided the boys in tying their shoes. Everyone finished at about the same time and the boys started to run towards their minivan parked behind the house, in front of the garage, but Adrian halted them.
"Ah-ah-ah, boys," they started and the boys came sulking back. "It's cold, you both will need jackets today, maybe even tomorrow before your game." The boys sighed and trudged back to the front door, grabbing their jackets off of the hooks. Natasha tapped Wanda's arm and tilted her head towards the door, guiding her along to grab a jacket as well. Adrian grinned and followed their family to the front door. As they entered the foyer, sliding their jacket from the hook, they saw Wanda standing quietly behind Natasha, eyes darting around as she wasn't sure what jacket she was supposed to be grabbing.
"Wands, baby," Adrian grabbed her attention and motioned for her to come over. "Here's your jacket, my love," they told her in a whisper as they helped her slide her arms into their jacket. She smiled at them as her cheeks became rosier by the second, her face felt hot as she shyly slid into the jacket. Once it was properly on her shoulders, she turned to Adrian, whose hands were pressed on her shoulders.
"What about your jacket?" She questioned, gently shoving their shoulder. Natasha and the boys stood behind her, ready to defend the question.
"Mom, you have to have a jacket too," Billy warned, his arms crossed as he mirrored his brother who stood next to him with a scowl.
Adrian sighed, "You're right boys, I'll be right back. We're taking the outback today, van tomorrow, okay?" She told them and Natasha nodded, grabbing the keys from their catch-all plate as Adrian bounded up the stairs.
Once everyone made it into the car, Adrian began their journey to drop everyone off. Natasha and Adrian had chosen the music that played in the car - punk songs that they sang loudly in an attempt to annoy the boys. Their attempt was successful and even managed to bring Wanda to a blush that became fire along her skin when Adrian rested their hand on her upper thigh, occasionally squeezing to the beat of the song.
They dropped off the boys first, reminding them that Natasha and Clint would be picking them up that afternoon, which they both remembered very well. Once they were safely inside the school, Adrian continued their journey toward the satellite compound near Tony’s wooded home. Adrian kept their hand on Wanda’s thigh, oblivious to her burning core as she recalled the events of the previous day that had begun with Natasha’s hand on her thigh.
Natasha thought it was funny to see the two of them in the awkward stage of a relationship, something she'd never had the privilege of seeing. When her and Wanda's relationship had become serious, Adrian came into Wanda's life again. When Natasha met Adrian, they clicked with ease and Natasha was able to see how Adrian was a home for Wanda, a home that she thought Wanda never had. Between the three of them everything came with ease, every interaction felt natural. While Natasha still felt natural with this Wanda, she could tell that Wanda and Adrian did not feel entirely natural about the situation. They have an undeniable chemistry, yes, but they don't know each other. Natasha thought to herself that if they have the opportunity to get to know each other then they might acknowledge their chemistry.
"Where are you going for your date tonight?" Natasha piped up from the back as she continued to observe them. Wanda whipped around, expecting Adrian to answer. Adrian glanced up at the rearview mirror to glance at Natasha with wide eyes.
Adrian clicked their tongue, "I don't know, actually." They were hesitant as they realized that they hadn't thought about where they were going to take Wanda on their impromptu date.
Natasha chuckled, she having a feeling that Adrian didn't know how to go about their date. "How about you guys go to Light? That restaurant on the boardwalk?" She knew this restaurant wouldn't be right and that Adrian would pass on it, but she thought it would spark the idea she hopes for.
"I dunno Nat, I don't remember you or Wanda liking it much, it’s a bit too…prissy."
Bingo, Natasha thought. Adrian heard that, making direct eye contact with Natasha in the mirror. "What about Rita's? That's on the boardwalk, too," Adrian figured out what Natasha was going for.
"Oh! That would be nice, that's where Wanda took us after we closed on the house," Natasha reminisced, hoping that the restaurant would rekindle the connection.
Wanda giggled nervously, "I'm sorry, what's Rita's?" she glanced at Adrian, then back at Natasha as her hand unconsciously moved over Adrian's, giving it a light squeeze in hopes of comfort.
Adrian grinned, biting their lip in thought. "It's uh," they scoffed, "it's a restaurant and bar on the boardwalk-"
"A queer restaurant and bar," Natasha interjected. "That's why Wanda had picked it, she normally didn't like bars otherwise."
"I see," Wanda giggled again, feeling a bit lighter now.
"We'll still get dressed up, though." Adrian glanced at Wanda, her face had turned a lighter shade and she sucked on her lip in thought. Adrian could feel her anxiety start to spike as she thought about what to wear and what to eat and how to act. "Not too dressed up," they started, glancing at Wanda, their eyes pulling her to look at them. "We'll walk around the boardwalk for a bit afterwards. Is that okay, Wands?"
Wanda took a deep breath as she felt Adrian in her mind, trying to ease her discomfort. "Yes, I think that sounds lovely." She smiled at them and then looked back to Natasha, "What are your plans for tonight?"
They were approaching the compound now and Wanda looked out the window, seeing different machines fly out from behind it and come back, being tested in small bursts. "Well, after I'm done here, I'm going with Clint to pick up all of the kids and then the boys and I are going to stay the night with them. They all have a game tomorrow morning. Which-" Natasha switched gears as she started gathering her things to get out of the car. "Ads, will you fill and bring the cooler tomorrow morning?"
Adrian put the car in park as they arrived at the front of the building. Bruce had just stepped out of the main door and waved at the trio. "Yes ma'am, I planned on it," they told her with a smile. Natasha smiled back as she unbuckled.
Natasha leaned forward reaching one hand out to cup the side of their face farthest from her. She pulled their face to her lips and gave her a big, loud kiss on the cheek. "You are the best spouse I could've asked for," she tells them as they turn towards her with a beaming smile.
They kiss her on the lips, "I love you," they whisper to her.
"I love you too," she whispers back before turning to Wanda. "And you, my love," she reaches to pull her in to kiss her cheek in the same manner. "You are the best wife I could've ever asked for," Wanda beams at her as well and cups her cheek to kiss her on the lips. Natasha brushes the hair from Wanda's face and kisses her head before muttering "bye," and making her way out of the outback. Wanda looks out the window, watching as Natasha makes her way towards Bruce. She turns and waves to them, they wave back and she continues, patting Bruce on the arm and making their way inside the compound.
Once Natasha was safely inside, Adrian put the car in drive once more and turned around. Wanda looked out the window, her mind spinning as she saw the trees swimming by. "I really like when she called me that," the words fell out of Wanda's mouth as the thought was released from her mind.
"Hmm?" Adrian hadn't heard at first but after a pause they realized what she meant, "you like being called her wife?" Adrian grinned as they clarified, out of their periphery Wanda blushed, beams exploding from her expression.
"I've never really been called that before," Wanda's voice emitted wonder as she replayed Natasha's words in her mind. The word brought a tingle to her chest and rendered it warm as it swelled with love.
"Well, you're our wife, and an amazing one," Adrian started, slyly glancing over their shoulder to see Wanda's reaction before they continued. "You are so amazing with our boys, Nat can't get over how kind and innocent you are, how much you care about everyone." They paused a moment more, looking at Wanda as they approached a stop sign. When they came to a stop their magnet pulsated and Wanda turned to them, her eyes sparkled in the early morning light. Their heart practically leapt to their throat, begging to be let out with more word vomit - anything to make her this happy all the time. "We're happy you're part of our life Wands."
She fought to tear her eyes away, dabbing at the wetness that had pooled in her eyes. "I'm happy to be in your life," she whispered. Her mind spun with visions of her new family. It felt like the first time that she ever actually got to fantasize about her family. It was different than she thought that it would be, but she was grateful for what it was. She could see Natasha pushing the boys on the tire swing in their front yard, Adrian showing them how to play catch when they were smaller, both of them practicing soccer with the boys. She could see herself reading to them at bedtime, and she imagined what it was like when they were smaller - something she didn't get much time with in her world.
"Ads, what was it like when the boys were smaller?" By now, Adrian had turned back to the road and continued heading back towards town. They tilted their head as they recalled the boys in infancy - how they were fun and sweet but also a little terrifying as their powers blossomed.
“It was interesting,” they sighed in thought, watching the road closely. “They were great babies, they slept through the night early on. Probably because we let them sleep with us,” they chuckled at the thought, Wanda giggled as she pictured the scene. “Their powers weren’t obvious when they were babies, but yours got a little out of control, especially when you were pregnant.”
Wanda looked at them, enamored as scenes flooded her mind. "I wish I could've been there." Adrian looked over, starting to remind her that she was but realizing the error. Their eyes softened as they watched her, still smiling, but sadness prying its way behind her eyes.
They pushed air through their nose as they struggled to decide what to say next. "What was it like for you? I mean, I remember hearing Vision mentioned a few times, were you guys close?"
Wanda scoffed, "Hmph, close. He was the boys' father," she explained watching the road as she half expected Adrian to react similarly to Natasha.
Instead, their eyebrows furrowed and eyes squinted as they continued watching the road. "Oh, I see," they let out a nervous laughter, "how did that work exactly?" They were more polite about their curiosity than Natasha but Wanda knew they were just as confused.
"Well," Wanda swallowed as her throat had suddenly become dry, "it was more my magic than typical biology." She glanced at them, still sensing confusion. "I..." she took a sharp breath, "I was grieving Vis, so I, " a chortle as she hesitated, "I created my own world. I brought Vis back and we lived a domestic life in Westview. And, as time went on, I became pregnant with the boys and had them in probably 24 hours or so. In real time, I mean."
Adrian processed the information quietly, popcorn questions exploding into their mind. "Your magic really is something else, Wands. I wondered what our Wanda was capable of, but there was never an opportunity to find out." Wanda smiled at how calmly they responded to her explanation, it eased her concern that they'd be afraid of her powers.
"Well," she began, watching the now rolling treeless hills fly past them. "It's honestly a burden, probably for the best she never got to use her powers to that extent." Adrian could hear her heavy heart in her words, a feeling rising in them that she'd lost so much because of her powers.
Adrian's hand turned over from her thigh and grabbed her hand, squeezing it in reassurance. "Can I ask you a potentially hard question?" Their tone was unsure as though they were ready for an explosion of emotions if the question was too much.
She giggled in anticipation as she threw a side-long glance in their direction. "Sure, should I prepare for this one?"
They chuckled, "I don't know, maybe?" They took a deep breath, realizing that they were exiting the highway and nearing their first destination. "What happened to Vis? To the boys?" A breath left Wanda's lungs and she sank in her seat. They immediately regretted asking the question and wished their impulsivity would just box itself back up in the back of their mind. After a moment of quiet and pulling into the parking lot of their first destination Adrian spoke, "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, I understand if-"
"No," she cut them off, closing her eyes to hide the pain from Adrian as she squeezed their hand tightly. "No, I want to tell you." They pulled into a parking spot at the end of the lot, rain drizzling on the window as the wiper swiped it away with a quiet slowness. With Wanda's free hand, she touched the cold window and held her hand to it, letting it burn her skin. It was then that Adrian began to observe her body language with a close eye, shutting their always listening mind off from hers. "It's a long story, but I lost the boys to Agatha, sort of. The world that I created I also had to destroy which meant losing my boys. And Vision, I lost him to-" she sighed, closing her eyes to block out the tears as she felt the power buzzing in her hands, starting to flare out. She took a deep, shaky breath before continuing, "I h-had to kill him...twice, and both times were seemingly for nothing. So..." she pulled her hand from the window and wiped her tears before they fell, her cold skin piercing her eyes.
Her power was still trying to fire from her hands, willing her to explode but she willed it to stop. Adrian took a quiet breath, taking both of her hands in their own and giving them a gentle and comforting squeeze. Their mind was not in hers but their heart felt the pain radiating from her and hoped to give her some relief. "Thank you for telling me, Wands," they whispered as they watched her face as it had sunk inward with her memories. "I'm here for you," a hand gravitated to Wanda's cheek and cupped it, warming them as her cheeks had chilled with the weather. She turned towards them and found herself wandering into their eyes for comfort. She pulled a hand from theirs and laid it on top of their hand on her cheek. Her power, still emitting, faded as it got closer to their hand and disappeared upon contact.
They let her mind stumble into their eyes and Wanda felt her skin warm when she met their comforting gaze. For a second she saw herself in their mind, laying on their chest. Their arm around her shoulders and stroking her curls, their free hand entangled with hers as they talked - the words were blurred and she felt herself focus in on the feelings. Her ear was pressed to their chest, their skin warm against hers and she heard their heartbeat, felt their chest rise and fall. She felt the gentle tug against her hair as they stroked, their hand gently squeezing hers as their thumb rubbed circles along the back of her hand.
Adrian saw that she'd let herself become immersed in the scene and took shallow, shaky breaths as they took in her feelings. They tried to keep her memories out of their head in an attempt to give her privacy but screams protruded through their blocks. Her screams, her pain, the demons in her chest waded through their mind. They cringed as they tried to push them out, eyes screwed shut, which pulled Wanda from the scene. After a moment of confusion, Wanda realized what they'd done and gave a faint smile, her dreary eyes letting light filter out of them as the weight lifted off of her. She wanted to crawl into their lap and wrap her arms around their neck, forcing herself into their embrace- but she thought against it, instead taking one of their hands in her own and bringing it to her lips, giving it a light kiss.
"You didn't have to do that," she whispered, her eyes withdrawn from theirs. They shook their head softly as they whispered to her mind, 'I wanted to.' Her lips curled upward hearing their voice in her head, she never thought that she'd like someone being able to have access to her mind in that way but the more time she spent with them the more she saw that they were quite respectful when it came to letting themselves into peoples' minds.
Adrian started to hear their electricity buzzing again and stole themselves from the moment by clearing their throat. "We should probably get started on our errands if we want to make our date tonight," they told her coolly and she giggled, they were happy to bring her away from the darkness, even if it meant taking it for themselves.
"You're right," she allowed herself to look them in the eyes for a moment before stealing away. "But, first," she looked around for a moment as she felt confusion rise to their face. She took a deep breath as quiet as she could manage before she adjusted in the seat so she was on her knees and bent over, resting her hands on the center console. Their faces were inches apart and she could feel their breath hitch as they gave her a once over before she moved a hand to their upper thigh. The other went to their face and cupped their cheek, pulling them into a kiss.
The kiss was short lived, she pulled away, "thank you," she whispered as her green bore into their hazel. They nodded, letting their tongue poking past their lips as she sat back in her seat. "Ready?" she asked them with a toothy grin, her hand on the door handle. They closed their eyes as a grin made its way up their cheeks, giving her a curt nod as they opened their door and pulled the keys out of the ignition simultaneously.
As Wanda left the car, pulling a hood over her head, Adrian made their way to her side, grabbing her hand and pulling her inside the grocery store to get out of the rain. Wanda realized that they weren't the type to talk more than they needed to, a person of few words. But with her, they seemed willing to talk about any and everything; pointing out interesting things in the store, things they thought she'd like, explaining their tasks for the day, telling her about their family's routine with the store. She adored it, no one had talked to her like this since Vision died. Their kindness towards her gave Wanda a toothache and butterflies simultaneously.
Rooftop Conversations (Benny Cross x Shy!Reader Pt 4)
On my drive home yesterday, I heard Zach Bryan's Oklahoma Smokeshow for the first time and I realized it's so Benny x Bunny coded :) I'm curious to know what song reminds you of Benny x Bunny! As always, I so so so appreciate all your comments!
Benny x Bunny Masterlist here!
Word Count- 3.1k+ (longest one yet!)
Summary- Another night spent with Benny was sure to be an adventure filled with firsts for both of you.
******
Benny told you he knew a place to eat that had real food. You were about to tell him that Ricardo’s did have good food, but he all but pulled you into the back of his bike in an effortless move that silenced your voice with a soft gasp. The adrenaline surged through you as fresh as the first time he had given you a ride and you wondered if you would always feel this feeling riding on the back of his bike.
He drove you to the other end of town again and you couldn’t hide the surprise on your face as he pulled up to a bar, parking next to a lineup of other motorcycles.
“A bar?” You asked as he helped you off the bike.
“Not exactly what Pete would have picked,” Benny replied coolly as he dismounted. “But the best food ‘round.”
“Well, I’m mad at him so who cares what he’d pick.” You grinned as you followed him to the door.
Inside, the bar was alive with music, voices and bustling bodies. Benny’s hand found the small of your back and gently guided you toward the far tables. Ignoring the rush of butterflies at the contact, you tried to focus on the familiar faces from the picnic who cheered when you entered with Benny but you blushed, looking down at your feet. A couple people clapped Benny on the back as he passed and you felt sort of like a prize and he was the winner. He found an empty table at the back, and you took a seat, facing the room.
“I’ll get you a drink,” he announced before he disappeared into the crowd, moving towards the bar. You glanced about the bar, taking in the rustic setting and colorful characters. Then suddenly, the leader of the Vandals himself was in front of you, sliding into the unoccupied chair.
“You’re Benny’s girl, right?” Johnny asked and before you could correct him – or rather ask exactly what he meant by that – he continued, “It’s nice to see you here again. The boys all really liked your cookies. Sure was sweet of you to bring that.”
You nodded, muttering a soft thanks.
“My wife was wonderin’ if you could give her your recipe – for the cookies, I mean. Maybe you could tell her at another meeting,” he said, tapping his fingers over the tabletop. He’s trying to be friendly, you realized. Trying to include you in the club somehow. Warmth filled your chest at the idea of a club filled with bikers could possibly like you enough to want you around. You wondered if they just aimed to make you the center of every inappropriate joke that would inevitably be thrown out. Regardless, you still felt flattered at the notion.
Charmed, you replied, “I–It's nothing too difficult. I’m sure she could recreate it.”
He hummed. “Well, maybe some of the guys would like to see you ‘round, too. It’s good for ‘em to be ‘round such a civilized lady as yourself. Might even be able to whip ‘em into shape.”
“I don’t know about that,” you grinned sheepishly, rubbing your shoulder. For being the leader of a motorcycle club, he wasn’t as scary as you originally thought. Intimidating, definitely, but not terrifying.
“You whipped our boy Benny into shape! And hell, if you can do that in just the few hours you spent with him, think of all the good you could do for the Vandals. You’d be like a god amongst men here.” The lines around his eyes creased as he bantered.
Heat climbed up your neck at the implication and you broke his eye contact. “I’m sure Benny acts like that with every girl he’s trying to sleep with.”
“I’ve never seen him act the way he does when you’re around. It’s like you’ve hypnotized him.” A mirthful grin overtook his ruggedly handsome face. “You’re not a siren, are ya? Leading him off to his watery demise?”
You giggled, shaking your head.
“Good, can’t have that – it’s bad for business.” He stood, using his foot to slide the chair back in. “Plus, ya know, I kind of like that kid. He’s rough around the edges and damn near feral at times, but he’s a good kid. Has a good heart. I think he’d take care of ya. That’s all he wants, I think. Someone to love ‘em and someone he can show he’s capable of lovin’ too. ”
Bemused, you fell quiet and before you could reply, Benny reappeared, two bottles in hand and he nodded at his friend, “Johnny.”
You glanced between the two as you felt the gravity of their friendship sparking. It was clear that Benny had not heard Johnny’s previous words because if he had, you were sure he wouldn’t appreciate the wingman stunt. And though you didn’t know Benny hardly at all, it was clear in the way he nodded at Johnny that this was an important relationship in his life, possibly one of the only friendships he had. Something heartening stirred in you as you pictured Benny going to him for advice, for brotherly connection.
“Benny,” Johnny returned innocuously and he shot you a secretive smile before disappearing into the crowd again.
“He wasn’t teasin’ you, was he?” Benny asked lightheartedly as his gaze found you again.
“No,” you replied with a small smile, mind still sifting through the information Johnny had left you.
“Good, I’m the only one that can do that,” he stated and your eyes widened slightly at his confidence. “I didn’t figure you were the type to order a beer,” he explained as he slid the coke bottle in your direction. You wrapped your fingers around the cold glass, internally beaming at the thought of him second-guessing himself when it came to ordering you a drink.
“Not usually,” you answered as he sat down in the seat next to you, a fresh beer bottle in his hands. “You must think I’m pretty boring.”
“I think you’re anything but.” He smiled, his eyes seeming to be alight with a playful seductiveness. A dare, you realized. That’s what his mischievous look was; a dare, to be bold, to be adventurous. It stirred something in your gut chest that you didn’t know was dormant until now.
“Well, in that case . . .” You quirked your brow as you slid your coke bottle across the table stopping in front of him and grabbed his beer bottle which he had already opened and took a swig from. You brought it up to your lips, the smell making your stomach flip before you sipped a generous serving. The alcohol burned as it went down and you winced, nearly coughing.
Benny laughed. You were certainly something to keep him on his toes. He opened your soda bottle and moved it forward to cheers with you. The bottles clinked together and you smiled, making his heart flutter. Without breaking eye-contact, he lifted your coke bottle to his mouth and drank from it and nearly lost it when you mirrored him with the beer bottle. You sip was considerably shorter than his and you screwed up your face at the taste afterwards but he was still impressed by your sudden intrepidity. Just as he thought he was starting to figure you out, you’d surprise him with a new and exciting action. And Benny lived for the thrill of it. It was his turn to surprise you.
“What do you want out of life?” he asked abruptly as he set the bottle down.
Your brows rose at the severity of his question. “That’s . . . a deep question.”
“You don’t have an answer?”
“I have an answer, it’s just . . . that’s not something I expect on the first date. First date questions are more like ‘What’s your favorite color? What kind of music do you like? If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?’ Stuff like that.” You explained, voice lowering as you played with the wrapping on the beer bottle. A nervous distraction, he realized as he watched your delicate fingers.
“This is our first date?” he quipped, living for the way your eyes shot back up to his, a blush coating your nose and cheeks. “I thought it was when I gave you a ride home last night.”
“No, that was just a ride home.” You stood your ground, but gaze still fluttering back to the bottle.
“Oh,” he pretended to look down as if he were in deep thought. “Then what’s your favorite color?”
He watched as you tilted your head and fought to hold back a smile. “Yellow, like the sunrise in the early mornings. What’s yours?”
He made a mental note of that. “Red, like that red lipstick you're wearing right now.”
At that, your smile grew and he felt a swell of confidence so he continued, “What kind of music do you like?”
You giggled at the realization that he was playing into your game. “I listen to a lot of The Ronettes . . . and Elvis. Let me guess, you like The Rolling Stones?”
“Are you judgin' me by my cover, Bunny?” He grinned. “I also like Johnny Cash.”
“That makes sense. You seem like a character Johnny Cash would sing about," You said flippantly and brought the beer bottle back up to your lips for another sip and Benny was so enamored by the way your head tipped back, delicate neck exposed that he didn’t even realize you had teased him.
“If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?” he continued after a moment to compose himself as he drank from the coke bottle, wishing it was something stronger.
You seemed to ponder that for a second. “I’m not sure. I’ve always wanted to go to California.”
“Why is that?”
“I’ve never been to the beach and when I was a little girl, my mom had this magazine that dedicated an entire issue to the beaches of California. It looked so fun,” you described, your eyes lighting up.
Benny imagined the sight of you in a swimsuit – one of those new bikinis he’d seen Aubrey Hepburn wear on tv – and he nearly groaned.
“What about you?” you asked innocently, drawing him back to reality.
“The beach in California,” he replied instantly.
“Why?”
“Because you’d be there.”
You blushed, a smile encompassing your beautiful face and you looked down at the glass bottle again.
Benny leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table. “What other first date questions do you have for me, Bunny?”
******
The night was spent with smiles, stories and plenty of teasing (the latter of which was mostly Benny’s doing) and you hadn’t realized how late it was getting, too absorbed in the attention of the ocean blue eyes of the man sitting next to you. You both ate dinner (Benny insisting on the best meal was their burgers and you had to agree) and you had finished the beer but Benny replaced it with another coke afterwards. Hours passed and the rest of the patrons began to leisurely shuffle out, each calling out goodnight as they went. There were only a few left now, you realized as you glanced about the bar. Then, Benny asked if you wanted to see something.
He seized your hand in his and took you through the back of the bar, down the hallway and out the back door. The cool nighttime air was a refreshing change from the cigarette filled clubhouse. He led you around back to a closed in ladder leading to the roof. He opened the cage door and motioned for you first. You shot him an expected look.
“I’m not going up first!” You tried to act serious as you crossed your arms playfully, feeling an funny buzz from the drink.
“Why not?” he grinned, yeilding.
“Because, you just want to look up my skirt as I go.” You quirked a brow at him. “I’m not stupid, you know.”
“No, you definitely aren’t stupid. And I would never. I’m a gentleman.” He held a hand over his heart as if he was hurt by your insinuation.
“Yeah, sure you are,” You said, holding your ground.
He held up his arms in an appeasing way. “Alright, I’ll go up first. Just don’t trip and fall on your way up.”
You laughed as you began making your way up the ladder after him. You climbed up the two stories, the ladder clinking beneath each heel until you made it to the top where Benny offered a hand to help you up. A gentle breeze guided you to the far end of the rooftop where a generous view of the town lights, each twinkling like the stars above. You’d never seen this perspective of your little home town and it almost looked magical.
Benny went forward and lowered himself to sit down. He beckoned you to follow and, though you were scared, you moved to mirror his seat. He held your hand as you took a seat next to him. Your legs, significantly shorter than his, dangled off the edge, bumping lightly against the brick wall. He was close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body, close enough that your shoulders touched slightly.
“Wow, what a view, huh?” you said, voice barely above a whisper as the scent of his cologne wrapped around you.
Benny only nodded and you looked at him with a small smile, falling into a comfortable silence. Your gaze fluttered over his face, taking in the details in this dim lighting. His dilated pupils made his eyes darker and the shadow of his nose blended beautifully onto his lips. The gentle curl of his hair looked so soft and you didn’t even realize that your hand was reaching out. And maybe you tried to tell yourself that it was from the alcohol, but you knew you weren’t drunk. You touched him because you wanted to. Your fingers found the blonde tendrils and a gentle sigh escaped your lips because they were soft. His eyes were locked onto you and he remained unmoving, letting you take the reins.
“Do you actually want to marry me? Or were you just sayin’ that to get a reaction out of me?” you whispered, hand dropping back to your lap, fingers still tingling from the contact.
“Yes, I want to marry you.” His voice was a low rumble disrupting the silence of the rooftop.
You studied his face carefully, unable to look away. “How could you know that so soon?”
“You make really good cookies,” he retorted playfully and you gave him your best unamused look despite the fact that he left you very amused.
“I’m serious,” you said, fighting the smile tugging on your lips.
“I know you are,” he murmured, gaze flickering down to mouth. “I’m serious too – about marrying you and about your cookies.”
Heat filled your core. Like the undeniable pull of a magnet, you felt yourself drifting closer to him. “I bake more than just cookies, ya know.”
Benny groaned, “You’re teasin’ me, Bunny.”
“No, just letting you know what you’d be signing up with if you married me.” You smiled.
“I know exactly what I’m gettin’ myself into with you, Bunny,” he admitted slowly as he dipped his head lower, only a few inches from your face. His thumb and forefinger touched your chin softly. “Why else do you think I ran off Pete?”
You paused, brows furrowed at his words. “Wait, what?”
He didn’t seem to hear you as he continued forward and you lurched back before he could kiss you. “You did what to Pete?”
“I ran him off,” Benny explained as if it were obvious. “Had a talk with him.”
“Oh my god,” you breathed out harshly, a feeling of being drenched in icy water washed over you. “You saw him? Where?” Then it dawned on you. “You saw him at Ricardo’s? He actually showed up?”
He remained quiet, watching as you turned from the ledge, standing and began to pace as you worked through the thoughts hitting you faster than you could process.
“You ran him off? Oh my god, Benny. Is that code for something? Did you kill him?” You squeaked, the possibility of poor Pete being having to fight for his life played out like a complete disaster in your head.
“No.” He shook his head as if annoyed.
“Well what does that mean, then?” Your voice raised an octave as unease gripped your heart. “Did you beat him up?”
“I told you. I had a talk with him.” He said simply as he turned, flipping his legs over the ledge and faced you.
“You intimidated him! You with your loud bike and leather jacket and mean look, it wasn’t just a talk. He doesn’t deserve that. Pete is a good guy.”
Benny lifted his hands up in a placating way but the sarcastic look on his face caused anger to spike through you.
“What makes you think you had the right to do that?” You demanded as you planted your hands on your hip. “Where do you get off from?”
He opened his mouth to say something but thought better and closed it.
“You intimidated my date,” you snapped. “A date I was actually excited for by the way. He was kind and . . . had a nice smile.”
“I don’t see the problem,” he mumbled, narrowing his eyes at the ground in front of you.
“You don’t–” your mouth dropped open in shock, blood boiling at his audacity. You threw your hands up in exasperation as you spun away and made your way back to the ladder.
“Where are you going?” Benny called out as he trailed after you.
“I’m going home so I can call Pete and apologize.” You retorted over your shoulder. And probably check to see if he's not been put in the hospital because of the biker behind you.
Benny laughed. “I thought you said you were mad at him,”
“Well, I’m not anymore. I’m mad at you now,” You fumed as you shot him a look before you descended the ladder.
“Me?” Benny scrambled down the ladder after you but you didn’t slow your pace as you rounded the outside of the bar, heading for the sidewalk. It would be a long walk home, but you had no interest in getting a ride home from him.
He jogged to catch up, grabbing your arm to halt you. “I didn’t hurt ‘em. I swear.”
You spun around to face him. “That’s not the point. You men all think alike, don’t you? Thinkin' you can stake your claim like women are just . . . just objects, toys.”
Benny’s jaw clenched tightly. “I’m not goin’ to apologize for it if that’s what you’re thinking.”
You scoffed as you wrenched your arm free and turned away. You picked up your pace as you made your way down the sidewalk in the direction of you home.
“Can I at least give you a ride home?” He called out.
“Nope, I think it’s a perfect night for a walk, don’t you?” you replied without looking back, leaving Benny standing in the middle of the sidewalk in a stupefied silence.
So, someone wants to write "Villaneve Chef AU in which Eve is an amazing, important food critic and V is the new, young chef who just opened her restaurant and didn't make the critic fall in love instantly like she does with everybody else"? 👀
Kinda enemies to lovers since they don't like each other too much at the beginning but actually they like each other A LOT.
V is so frustrated because she can't get a five stars review while Eve is irritated because she can't believe someone this talented and beautiful and cooky exists so V keeps inviting Eve over and over for new dishes and eventually Eve asks her out but not in a date way to bring V to eat in a place, probably Korean, where she never went, but its kinda of a date and then they eventually cook together beacuse Eve is going to show V what she's missing in her cucine that is that "home" feeling linked to cooking that V doesn't have because her back story and Eve shows her that not everything must be executed perfectly as long there is love AND kitchen sex which is not hygienic I know but humor me. Also sex in other places because why not?
I just want some more slow burn (not that slow), mutual pinning, we hate each other/ actually we don't, smut, fluff, soft villaneve fanfics to survive the hiatus.
Inspired by the astonishing Sandra Oh in glasses and the mesmerising Jodie Comer wearing white like the chef's outfit.
Hi, I've been reading your Killing Eve fics on AO3 lately and I'm a huge fan! "Sidewalks" is a take I have never seen anywhere else - chapeu, you play masterfully with the best bits of S2. I really hope you will find again the drive to finish it, it truly is a dark gem in a fandom increasingly clogged with fluff and smut without thought and context. Besides life happening, was there something more directly related to the direction S3 took/KE-related that snuffed your inspiration, if I may ask?
Thank you. I enjoyed writing it.
When I say life happened, I mean I went through a toxic breakup, left my job for my health bc COVID, and became more active in BLM protests around my city. This series of life is particularly exhausting for a lot of folks, especially with the up coming election, so I admire a lot of artists who continue to produce content; they're gems and should be cherished.
I think a lot of my criticism of the show is simply missing Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the main eye behind the camera. I'm not in love with fandom culture. I don't like how folks are sleeping on Sandra Oh because it feels a little racist. I don't like the invasion of privacy Jodie Comer continues to face. There was a time where she used to interact with the fandom and it feels like a shame that it no longer happens.
Lastly, between fandom stuff and S2 finale buzz kill, I think I mostly lost the flavor for the show because I watched S3 with my ex.
I still have my notes for "Sidewalks" and could see myself returning to it in the future. Please know I have commitment troubles to my creative works and love to start several projects without finishing them, aka everytime I've tried to DM ever.
Take care👋🏽
SO. Before I begin, I’m going to come out and say (and this will be no surprise to anyone who’s read anything I’ve written) that I am in fact a huge Eve + Villanelle shipper, but I’ve found myself thinking about something tricky on several occasions, so here’s an attempt to put it into words. Oh, there are spoilers in here, so skip if you haven’t seen season 1.
A lot of people are wondering whether or not we’re actually going to get something canonically romantic with these two characters, and while I hope to God we do, here’s the issue: Villanelle is a psychopath. Yes, we all know this, and yes, I love her to bits, but no matter how funny she is, no matter how much I want to make her into a real cinnamon bun and just eat her up, she is a psychopath. Now, that’s an obvious issue for many reasons, but here are some things that sort of, at least I think, currently stop V + E from becoming anything on screen.
Villanelle’s personality: she’s a child at heart, a child that gets really mad when she doesn’t get what she wants. She says she wants normal things, wants “someone to watch movies with”, but if the person next to her doesn’t agree to share the popcorn, what will stop V from stabbing that person in the knee with a fork? Nothing, because she’s a psychopath. Her whole “how dare someone hurt me / disagree with me” shines through her character in the series. In episode 1, “Nice Face”, she kills Cesare Greco, and the look on her face is euphoric, like close to orgasmic (kudos to Jodie Comer’s incredible acting), and as Jennings has stated in the novel, Villanelle does get real physical satisfaction from killing. In the book, she nearly hacks off Simon’s head with a big knife with name starts with a c, can’t remember, a chukabongo or something, and she literally “feels something so intense, it nearly brings her to her knees”. Now, if someone can get something like that, something better than sex (again, Jennings, killing gives V something sex never can quite deliver), then why would that person give that up? Love? Ergo, Villanelle, based on what we have so far, will not stop killing. Now, what does that mean?
I think it means, if these two are going to become something, it’s Eve who’s going to have to adapt. She’s going to have to either face her own darkness, which I see as very problematic and complicated, because in episode 8, she did release her own inner demon, she did do exactly what she’d planned to do, and what did she realize? That she wasn’t cut out for it. She stabs Villanelle, feels victorious for a total of two seconds, and then bang, so many flashes of panic and regret on her face (kudos to Sandra Oh, she’s brilliant in this scene), because stabbing someone in reality turned out to be a lot different from stabbing someone in her mind, and at least to me, that tells that Eve’s fascinated with morbid things and the psychology behind the people who do these morbid things, but Eve herself is not a person who wants to be doing the morbid things.
Now, this same woman who went through this process of realizing her mistake, realizing who she isn’t, would have to adapt, would have to accept Villanelle’s violence and the physical satisfaction she gets from her kills, would have to throw her own rules of morality and justice and “what’s right or wrong” out the window. Villanelle is capable of her own version of love, but so far, her version of love was egoistical, self-centered, obsessive, and made her kill Anna’s husband just to get him out of the way. She no doubt knew killing Max would hurt Anna, but did she care? No, because it’s all about what Villanelle wants. She knew, without a doubt, that killing Bill would erect a huge barrier between her and Eve, but did she care? No, she could have got out of that club without being seen, easily, but she killed him anyway, because he upset her by grabbing her arm at the U-Bahn and stopping her from following Eve, plus her whole “you shouldn’t touch a person without their permission” (agreed, btw). If you ask me, her whole “he was following me!” excuse was complete bullshit. And now, there’s a freaking hole in her stomach, and Villanelle no doubt knows exactly why Eve did it, but will she care about her reasoning? No, because Villanelle “really liked her”, as in “how dare she do this to me when I liked her?” So, basically, Eve’s the one who’s going to have to do all the work because there’s nothing to indicate Villanelle hasn’t been like this since she was a kid, and can I see Eve doing it? I don’t know. It’s easy to dream, it’s easy to want things to happen, and I freaking hope the writers will give us what we want (because I swear, if they don’t and they end this show without even a kiss, I will be so mad I’ma freaking fly over there), but if they do, it’s going to take time, it’s going to take so much character development, I doubt we’ll be seeing it in season 2. I don’t see that much development happening inside of Eve over 8 episodes, but who knows, we might get more than 8? Yes, she changed so much during season 1, but to go from “hunting a psychopath who kills people for a living, including her best friend” to “I’m gonna go full on Clarice and hook up with this woman” is just, it would take too much, I think. So, there needs to be a season 3, or a really long season 2.
I don’t know if any of this made any sense, but it’s just something I’ve been thinking about while writing and it’s stopping me from writing all the lovely fluff I’d love to write for these two because they’re dorks. And for some reason, tonight, I had to get my fear of “we’re not going to get our ship in season 2″ into words.
