Hello Larry - NBC Mid-Season 1979 After McLean Stevenson (The Cat From Outer Space) left M.A.S.H and was replaced by Harry Morgan, he landed his own sitcom. (At least 2.) It’s a thing I have only half remembered for decades.  A clicked on a YouTube video called 36 New Shows of the Hellish Mid-Season TV of 1979 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfGZOmcR-nU) and the second show opening was for Hello Larry. (The third was for the Three's Company Spin-Off The Ropers, after the Ropers left Three’s Company and were replaced by Don Knotts.) Like when Frasier left Boston for Seattle more than a decade later, Larry Alder left Los Angeles for Portland, Oregon to become a radio Psychologist.  The shop also featured Kim Richards (Escape From Witch Mountain, Return To Witch Mountain, No Deposit No Return), Joanna Gleason (Nadine Berkus on Love & War, Atty. Jordon Kendall on The West Wing) and Meadowlark Lemon (The Harlem Globetrotters). The show had three 2-part crossover episodes with Diff'rent Strokes. (The same way The Facts Of Life had 2 crossover episodes later.) The crossover episodes can currently be watched Free on Prime Video in the Seasons 1 & 2 of Diff'rent Strokes. Musical Monday

Hello and welcome back to 1977. Last week brought Happy End to the blog, and this week we dive into the next Best Musical loser. Now, this is a show that may obscure to some and well-known to some. Either way, it deserves its place in the Musical Monday sun, so here we go!

Musical: I Love My Wife

Book, Music, and Lyrics: Michael Stewart, Cy Coleman, and Michael Stewart

Broadway Run: April 17, 1977 - May 20, 1979

Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Lenny Baker), Best Direction of a Musical (Gene Saks)/Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical (Lenny Baker), Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (Michael Mark, Joseph Saulter, John Miller, Ken Bichel), Outstanding Music (Cy Coleman)/Theatre World Award (Joanna Gleason)

Other: The only two actors who did not receive any award for their work in I Love My Wife are Ilene Graff and James Naughton.

Fun Fact: Cy Coleman's first award win was his Drama Desk Award for I Love My Wife. He had been previously nominated for the Tony for Seesaw, Sweet Charity, and Little Me. He would go on to win his first Tony the following season for On The Twentieth Century.

So there you have it! Even if you don't love your wife, you may love this Coleman and Stewart score, which does exist in cast album legacy. And thank the Lord for this musical bringing the wonderful Joanna Gleason to the stage. Next week will be the final 1977 show, a musical that honors another one of Broadway's most loved composers. Now go see a show!
