generic! that's such a good word to describe it now. L&O had a style that stood apart from the other procedurals, in part was the way the real life inspired cases were given their own spin and more layered story premises were created and written, for both the police work and legal aspects but also the characters themselves too in how they did their jobs. cutter did push the limits but he did so in clever ways. when you can predict every. next. scene. there is no fun and inventiveness anymore. writing probs indeed.
This article was doing so well until I got to this part:
“The fact that Price and Cutter are similar personalities makes them great adversaries, because they’ll know each other’s thought processes, strengths and weaknesses from their own experience.”
Similar personalities… SIMILAR PERSONALITIES? WHAT, HOW EVEN, NO, NOT EVEN CLOSE
The revival writers failed to even give Nolan a personality, let alone any depth, so how does this work. also would it really be a fight between these two? because honestly is there even a question about who’d win

that would've been interesting! tbh though, with the state of the shows writing I'm kinda glad Mike's not back, :/

i have to say i was really sceptical when in L&O season 18 they "promoted" jack mccoy to DA and introdced micheal cutter as EADA. jack for me was the heart of the show and no one else could take that job in my opinion! but the moment we met mike on screen i was completely sold!
(i think it was this scene where he started arguing while swinging a beseball bat that i fell in love with him)
the way they did it, mike is not a replacement for jack but rather a good addition to him. he is exactly the type of person jack would hire and a perfect new attack dog for the prosecution, just like jack was when he joined in season 5. though mike is a bit more cold blodded.
they are very similiar but different enough to make their discussions interesting and the fact that connie was there before mike leads to a relationship that is more equal than one being the other's assistant.
the three of them have more of a "siblings and their dad" dynamic that makes the show really fun. and it is very in character for jack to be more involved in the cases than arthur was.
i also have to say that for the first time i feel like ed green has truly great chemistry with a partner and him and lupo are probably the least corrupt cop duo since the beginning of the show.
i never thought i'd ever say this but for the first time i feel like season 5 has stiff competition for best set of characters. the show hasn't felt this fun in seasons!
also: isn't it crazy that both jack and anita are part of both lineups? they've been here since seasons 4 and 5 respectively!

#when i first started S18 i was like no#i'm gonna miss the old seasons and jack as eada#but i soon changed my mind too and agree mike is not a replacement for jack but their dynamic does call upon him being a reflection of jack#in some ways which fits the father/son dynamic and works so well#loved your point about connie being established in her job versus mike being the new kid and how it equalized them#anita and jack the real ogs and ed and lupes too yes#and the baseball bat. and gif choice 👏

#pls don't apologize for the rant#loved it and i love to talk/rant/discuss the show#the court scenes are terrible#and there is absolutely no presence to the adas#and where are the writing consultants? nowhere either
