Musical Monday

So the humorous thing about the 1997 awards season is that the Tony-winning Best Musical, Titanic, is the only one-word titled musical; the other three nominees are all two-worded titles. Is that humorous? Maybe just me? Well, either way, we are in 1997 and it’s Tony time! Four titles are in competition, but only one cruises into victory. This week highlights one of those sore losers. Here we go!

Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Chuck Cooper), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Lillias White)/Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Musical, Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical (Lillias White), Outstanding Music

Other: For the two Tony winners, this would be their first Tony nomination and only Tony win (to date).

Fun Fact: The Life had the longest run of the Best Musical losers of 1997. It’s also a rare title where Cy Coleman was also a Producer.
