I’ve been making these GIFs for about a week, and I have no idea what I’m doing, so I’m sure somebody can find a way to make this much more stunning and gorgeous and less jerky, but honestly, honestly, I don’t know what any of these things on this free GIF maker mean.
That being said, I don’t know that I ever realized the full extent of the desolation on his face when Joan leaves his flat after he gives her money.
I’ve gotten to the point where I actually have these playing in the background while I do laundry. This happened to be on and I turned around just as she was leaving.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look quite so sad without tears. He just looks lost.

Joining the meme finally lol
If I had a nickel for everytime I shipped an anti social but kind hearted detective with a woman whose first name is Joan but he only calls her by her last name I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't alot but it's weird it happened twice!!

Who Takes Care Of You
Tumblr media
Prompt: Who takes care of you?
Fandom: Endeavour
Pairing: Joan/Morse
N/A: This is actually part of my universe where Joan is a witch and Morse is a vampire and together they lead the Guard.
Then
It had been about a month since Susan left Dev, and Joan was slowly but surely worrying herself to death. True, she had spent some time with him on the day she had first learned about their split, but since then, he seemed to withdraw himself from everyone, his aunt and uncle, Joan herself, their mutual friends. And that was not like him at all.
While she was busy with her studies, she was determined to find him, and so, during her lunch break, she went to the Guard House, determined to see her best friend and drag him to have a bit to eat no matter what.
Thankfully, he was in his office; not so thankfully, she didn’t like the sound of his voice when she knocked, and he turned out to look even worse. “Hey, Dev.”
He looked up and she was shocked at how lifeless his eyes looked. “Joan. How can I help?”
Why so formal? They had never needed an excuse to spend time together… “It’s lunch time. Come on.”
“I’m not hungry, thank you.”
Clearly he hadn’t been for a while since he had lost weight; she could only imagine what his aunt would have to say about that.
“Come on” she insisted, and then, rather desperately, “Please?”
Normally, he wasn’t able to resist that tone, and so it proved this time even though he was clearly still reluctant.
They went to the café they had been to quite a few times before, and it was obvious that the waitress was as shocked by the changes in Dev as Joan herself had been since she immediately began pushing for them to order the largest plates of the menu.
She didn’t quite manage that, but at least Dev ordered food.
“How are you?” she asked once that had been deal with. “And don’t say fine.”
For a moment, it seemed like he would regardless but then he simply shrugged.
She sighed. “Dev, I’m worried about you.”
“You don’t have to be. I’ve been doing my work, taking care of things…”
“Who takes care of you?” She had to ask. Dev looked awful, and she knew he hadn’t been back at his aunt’s and uncle’s for a while now…
“Who said I need to be taken care of?”
It was her turn to give him an unimpressed stare.
He shook his head. “Really, I – it’s going to be –“ he swallowed. “I just need time…”
“I know, and that’s normal, but it doesn’t mane you have to be alone” she insisted. “We’re all here for you, Dev. All of us. Your aunt and your uncle and Fanny and all the others… you don’t have to hide yourself from everyone.”
“I’m not hiding…” but it was clear that he knew very well that he had been avoiding them just from how he wouldn’t meet her eyes.
She reached out and took his hand. “Look, Dev, I’m not saying you have to be happy and alright by tomorrow, just… let us help.”
He took a deep breath, then looked up. “I… I’ll go to my aunt’s and uncle’s for dinner tonight. I promise.”
She squeezed his hand.
It was a beginning.
Now
Susan was at the Market – one of the ones even humans without magic frequented because they considered them relatively normal (little did they know, but that was a story for another day) when she heard a surprised. “Oh. Hello, Joan.”
She turned around and faced someone she hadn’t seen in years. “Susan?”
She nodded somewhat shyly at her. Joan quickly thought about it and decided that she didn’t even feel the least twinge of jealousy. Dev hadn’t mentioned Susan in years, and it was her he came home with every night.
“I – how are you doing?”
“Very well” she told her honestly. “And you yourself?”
She brightened up. “Wonderful, actually. Henry and I are expecting.”
“Congratulations!” While she and Dev were determined to wait a while, it was nice to see someone else beam like that.
“I could say the same to you” she said, nodding towards her left hand.
“Thank you”. Even though it had been almost two years since they had –
“Dev, I presume?”
Now she had surprised her.
“I – “ she blinked. “There wasn’t – “ While all of this was old news, she didn’t want her to think –
“Oh I know” she shook her head. “You were just friends back then, but I saw you together on the street sometime later, and I just had the feeling…”
They smiled somewhat awkwardly at one another. Then, Susan announced, “I should really…”
“Yes, yes, of course…” She had something better to do anyway – looking for an anniversary gift for her husband; and so she returned to the task at hand with a smile at her face and very happy about the way things had turned out.

I know there will be lots of fidgeting today, so I thought I would go back to a “Final Scene Friday“.
It was quite a challenge to capture this still because it’s such a fleeting moment on his face, and I didn’t want to use a GIF or a video clip. I just wanted that instantaneous moment of pure rage, one of the only ones we see from him in nine seasons.
He’s drained, exhausted, recently hospitalized, and this call from Joan is more than he can stand. Everything boils up and over and he’s left impotently furious, frustrated and devastated.
It’s another moment of sheer unadulterated acting brilliance from this man.

my headcannon - their vows, their wedding...kiss the bride.
even though it was all in his head, it was a beautiful scene nonetheless and something for us fans to dream about and hold onto. At least we know for a fact that he loved her dearly. It was real love. And she loved him but was also too scared to say, and was obviously waiting for him to say those words for real, "I love you." How tragic.

You know what really hurts...
For years Morse has had all these feelings for Joan and never once put it into words. And when he FINALLY put his feelings into words, those words were *so* beautiful (honestly the combo of Russ' words and Shaun's delivery were 👌).
Joan never heard them. Maybe she had some idea that he liked her, but she never heard how much he felt for her. I think at different points, especially in S8 and S9, she desperately needed him to say it and he never did.

thinking about how Endeavour, which has always been a tragedy and was always going to be a tragedy, left us at the end not with a tragedy of uncontrollable circumstance, but the tragedy of making the right choice.
Morse lived. Joan lived. the event that tore Morse away from those he loved most was not a death, beyond a death to himself. at the end he was forced to reckon with a reality that had been brought about in part by his own choices and by circumstances outside of his control; the reality that the woman he loves and has loved so desperately will now forever be beyond his reach.
and at the end of it all, the tragedy (beauty) was that he chose it.

Morse: You alright? Joan: Yeah. Reverend: Is this the lucky man? Joan: Uh, no, this is Mr. Morse. Morse: I'm the Best Man. Reverend: Ah! Well don't worry. If the Groom doesn't turn up we shan't be calling you to step into the breach.

Particularly heartbreaking way of saying never the right time and place for Joan x Morse.
She is ready for the next phase of her life (or THEIR joint life maybe…). While he just can’t figure out what he is ready for 😢😢😢

I’m really slammed at work, so I’m throwing out a topic that I will return to later, and this doesn’t fall into any of our regular categories, I don’t think, but I’ve always meant to make mention of this curious, very brief moment at the beginning of “Harvest“. There’s a very quick shot of Joan opening the curtains that I missed and missed and missed over many viewings, but picked up on a recent rewatch.
I’d love to hear what everybody thinks about this.
