500 years later... it's done.

i don't even remember what the prompt was i think it was v and rockwell in sophia's eyes so. here it is

word count: 323-ish i was rewording stuff while i did formatting

warnings: none besides chairman rockwell being a huge sap

Sophia hated public displays of affection.

It was highly unnecessary, and at the worst— uncomfortable for everyone else. Such affairs, she thinks, are better behind closed doors, only for you and your partner to see. Still, during events such as these, it looks like it can't be avoided. Like dancing with your spouse as if you were newly. Carefree and happy.

She knew she wasn't the only one who had this sentiment-- James wasn't just her superior, but also her friend. There had been many a time where they'd talk about things that had no relation to their work, and he'd more on one occasion mention his dislike for such public affairs.

But there he was, hypocrite as he was, dancing with his wife in the middle of the hall, uncaring towards the audience they've garnered. Sophia sees the way Rockwell ignores the crowds sharing whispers and stares as the lovesick fool looks at Venus like she'd hung up all the stars in Halcyon. Madame Rockwell looked no different, either. If anything, Sophia's certain she's never seen either of them this happy before— with Venus looking like she's never been more certain of her place in Halcyon. Sophia never asked of her time in Monarch, rumors having spiraled over the chairman almost coming with her.

How horrible that would've been for Halcyon, she had heard one of the Byzantines whisper.

Sophia knows that's the last thing Venus cares about. She had been good at keeping up with appearances, but Sophia's seen overwhelming doubt loom over her behind closed doors. James washes over it all with just mere words. Mere words and maybe a bottle of Spectrum Black.

Or a dance, Sophia thinks. They dance like the world isn't watching, and she can't help but feel melancholic when Venus laughs over something Rockwell whispers to her. This was another party where they had to keep up appearances, and she knows their momentary happiness would quickly fade away once they get back to more important matters. The famine, the employment program. It's as though they've decided to completely drop the issue.

Following in their footsteps, Sophia decides to perish the thought for now. The couple was clearly enjoying themselves in the moment, though they'd never admit it out loud. They can worry about the impending doom of the colony some other time. She cracks a small smile at the thought.

She'd never admit it herself, but she was actually having a good time tonight.

i don't think she believes in love at first sight. i think she wants an equal relationship and someone she can trust
